Rodent 9... To keep or not to keep?

Rodent 9... To keep or not to keep? - 07/26/12 08:58 AM

So I have a Rodent 9 which looks awesome but I can't get over the wierd finger indents. So I'm trying to decide if I should sell it. The problem is it doesn't feel great so I don't want to take it out and scuff it up in case I hate it. But I also want to use it to see if the wierdness goes away. I have large hands and wear XL gloves. So maybe it just sits wierd in my hands and that will go away after I get used to it?

Well gang any thoughts?

Even if I decide I want to keep mine. I think I'm going to order a Sage and Black Canvas one from the Custom Shop. Just so I can be different.

I've had two and sold two. Just couldn't get used to the weird finger thingy either. In my personal view, I can't afford all of the great knives out there so I'm only going to find and keep the ones that fit me best.

Re: Rodent 9... To keep or not to keep? - 07/26/12 07:21 PM

My experience with the R9 was much the same as the OP. I have short fingers on a medium palm and the handle felt a little too big for my hands. I never got to actually use it before I passed it on. It's a brilliant design, it just may not work for everybody. I'm a huge fan of the Rodent series, especially the R4 which feels great to me. I think between the 911 and R9 everybody should be happy though.

Re: Rodent 9... To keep or not to keep? - 07/27/12 03:46 AM

Mine is a keeper. I've read multiple reports of people being "less than enthusiastic" about the handle design. I have medium/chubby hands and the handle design inspires confidence. That being said, I got a terrific deal on mine because its previous owner did not like the handles. To me, the Rodent 9 and 911 look like the same blade with different handles.
Either way, you get a huge piece of SR 101 steel to beat up for a lifetime. Try to hold the Rodent 9 before you buy as it may take a while to resell. The 911 has the res-c, which I dont recall people not liking the way it felt in thier hand. YMMV

Well, you missed my birthday by a few days, but I will not hold that against you if you mail it to me today!

Seriously, give it a go. If you use it for some light tasks you shouldn't mark it too much and should get a feeling for how it works for you. And then make a decision.

Hey BLD, do what you got to do brother, life is to short to hold onto an uncomfy blade You know how Res C feels and the 911 is in the shop

I held Magoo's and that was enough to convince me that Swamp series with the funky grip was not for me. Probably a good thing as I am probably $1.5K better off as a result.

Can you grind that handle bump off? Someone on BF did it to his Rodent 4.

also Busse Kin have too many cool knives coming out to not get something you love.

I happen to like my Rodent 9 a lot. In fact, with what I've been reading here I would like to let everyone know that I'm starting a Rodent 9 rescue for all those unwanted 9's. Anyone unhappy with their R9 can send it to me and I will make sure it is well cared for. (sheaths are welcome too)

I love the Rodent 9 blade, still trying to come around on the handle. But the blade is awesome. In my very limited use so far it bites deep and cuts well.

Re: Rodent 9... To keep or not to keep? - 07/28/12 11:35 AM

I was not enthusiastic about the R9 handle on first grip, but after trying it out a bit, especially choking back, it grew on me and seems fine now. I think I still prefer the Res C handles on the 911 and Dogfather, but need to handle them all some more to confirm.

I thought the R9 handle was sort of strange, but a lot of users have said that it is actually very comfortable.

I wasn't sure about the R9 when I saw the picture of it but decided to take a chance on it. Personally I happen to like the way it feels and fits my hand. Granted this handle is not for everyone so you will have to decide for yourself if you like it or not.

The R9's a great knife, although I'm finding I like the new 911, Battle Rat, and Basic 9 just a tad better due to those comfy Res-C handles.

i cant help but fell the R9 is a bigger knife thant the 911. when they are side by side the R9 is bigger and it just feels bigger in the hand. the B10 also feels alittle bigger but also lighter and faster in the hand than the 911. i cant help but want a third user b10 since my other two are safe queens

Make one a user. There is only one thing better then a good knife. . And that is useing that knife. Get out and bet on one of them safe queens are for rich kings.

Re: Rodent 9... To keep or not to keep? - 07/31/12 06:20 PM

While i am new to the whole Bussekin thing (just ordered a 911 a few weeks ago), i have to say that i looked at a Rodent 9 and a 911 and just couldn't get past the handle. That was what ended up being the deciding factor in ordering a 911 instead of a Rodent 9.

I read enough people on either side of the fence to make me feel like i would be happier with the 911 instead of taking the risk on not liking the way the handle felt. I will probably pick one up at some point, but it will likely be after a 311, 711 and several INFI blades i have my eyes on.
