Dan, Now Let's Talk About the 611 - 11/07/12 09:07 AM

I'm thinking a Boss Jack profile with a either a War Dog or Regulator handle. Something nice and stabby with a little more reach than the War Dog--I want to take it hunting to finish off deer if the need arises

Re: Dan, Now Let's Talk About the 611 - 11/07/12 09:16 AM

I like that stabby part...

Or how about a 6" Muk...?

Re: Dan, Now Let's Talk About the 611 - 11/07/12 10:02 AM

6" muk isn't as useful, in my opinion...unless you are planning on skinning Bigfoot

That crossed my mind... But my mind is a criss-cross....

I´ve mentioned that a tanto blde knife from SY would be nice, but it would decrease it´s usefulness in hunting.

Re: Dan, Now Let's Talk About the 611 - 11/07/12 10:18 AM

Boss Jack style would be nice but I´d like it to have partly sharpened spine.

In overall I think, like I said before, the 611 should be something special.

Re: Dan, Now Let's Talk About the 611 - 11/07/12 11:30 AM

I have a good feeling Dan will finish the '11 series on a grand note.

I hope for basic-handle and an ASH-1 like blade. As to thickness, I am leaning towards 3/16". We have been around this one in one of Pitmans earlier threads.

Pitmans skinny ScrapASH or Scrap Forces Natural Outlaw

MM

also a DSF with Res-C would be cool, call it the 6+2=8-11

I've been think about this one alot lately......

I'd really like to see something along the lines of a choilless Boss Jack with a mudder or War Dog handle.

[Linked Image from i1152.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i1152.photobucket.com]

I've had a Scrapper 5 SE pass through my hands, and probably would have kept it if it had 6" blade and no choil.

I'd like it to be as narrow as possible while still providing a good geometry, with a thinner stock.

Otherwise, you'll never feel like carrying them on your person.

Anything over 6" is too much for me to carry on me, and would be relegated to finding it's home in a pack.

And did I mention no choil????

Wow I can't believe this thread.....Just this past weekend I was on the blade forums considering a DSSF for a new blade. And I found myself thinking about the War Dog handle on a nice narrow width piece of SR101 OR SR77 from 6 to 8 inches long.. I am starting to wonder if DogTired can read minds....Dan Please read this thread!

How about a 3/16" ever so slightly smaller SR101 basic handled SARsquatch... the 6squatch.
The blade design of the SARsquatch is perfect as is with the swedge for digging roots, including the choil if necessary, but the handle is where it could use help.
No choil would be nice especially since there is no talon hole requirement.
Here is my crude photoshop attempt of what I think would be sweet.
I used the 1311 to replace the choil on purpose.
REMOVED BY ME TO COMPLY WITH RULE #10 Sorry, I am not used to this rule, but now I know.

These are the originals together.

Maybe bring the edge just a little lower than the handle for a wider blade like the SARsquatch has?

I vote for the mudder handles. I think they are the best there is for small and mid size knives. 411 is GREAT! I think you could handle even 7"-8" blade with mudders!

6" Boss Jack with mudder handles would be good. Or with the War Dog handle...or something else....it's all good.

Re: Dan, Now Let's Talk About the 611 - 11/10/12 12:54 AM

Yeah, a six inch mudder would be pretty sweet too, either way, BJ style or squatch style. I do think a thin wide blade that drops down way below the handle would be really sweet for food prep slicing & chopping as well as no slouch for skinning, kind of like a straightened out muk.

No choil, if this blade we're to have a choil I would have zero interest in it no matter how well it is designed in other regards.

While it is awesome that Dan listened to us and came out with the 1311, I believe it's time for those of us who have a strong preference for no choils be considered.....

Virtually every Busse & Kin released to this date has had a choil featured on it!

I know the percentage of us that are against choils are small compared to those in favor, but at least give throw us a bone every so often.....

Re: Dan, Now Let's Talk About the 611 - 11/11/12 03:11 AM

These percentages have been excerpted from Pitmans thread "Choils.....Love em or hate em"

23% voted - No, "A choiled knife is a spoiled knife"
50% voted - Yes, but only on knives with a 6" blade or over
16% voted - Yes, but only on knives with a 6" blade or less
11% voted - Yes Choils every time

Take this for whatever it's worth, but there are plenty of us out there who want no choils....

To me, it is exactly in the mid range blades, 4-6", that I find the choil most usefull.
But this is the never ending debate... Each to ones own!

A wide, 3/16" thick, blade will be something new from the Yard. At least in the 6" range...

I too am starting to feel depressed about this choil discussion. I´ve said it so many times before and I say it again: handles are for gripping and blades are for cutting. When the cutting edge starts right from the point that the handle ends you don´t need a choil - do ya?!?

This really is a never ending debate. I´ve never understood your opinion about the choils in mid sized blades and I think I never will. Excellent point, GD! This also applies to any knives that may be potentially used for self defense.

The 411, SS4 and Scrapper 5 SE would have made great fighters if they had no choil, but sadly they all came with a choil.

A choil simply has no place on a fighting knife as anything that could potentially hang up on clothing will likely do so. This is along the same lines as carrying a gun for self defense that has been proven to have a high rate of malfunctions......

IF Dan designed a 611 which featured a choilless Boss Jack type blade on a mudder handle, it would likely be the best fighter released to date by any of the Busse Group.

Especially if it featured the same grind and thickness as the Scrapper 5 LE.....

Never been in one and hope to never, but there is a place for knives in self defense.....

Mainly at belly to belly ranges where a gun may not be as effective.

I also know that I always have a knife on me so the potential is always there.

It won't do you much good if it snags on some heavy clothing and you lose control of it.....

I was simply further defining one of the many reasons why a choil should not be desired in a knife....

I believe there's far more reasons against them then there are for them.

Re: Dan, Now Let's Talk About the 611 - 11/12/12 05:05 AM

I can never understand the whole knife fight stuff, if you are wanting a knife for fighting then you might as well get something nice cheap, pointy and made in China from someone such as Cold Steel. In fact you might as well go to your nearest hardware store and get a long screwdriver. Stabbing through skin and fat doesn't require a very strong blade and edge retention definitely isn't an issue. For me the only reason I purchase quality knives such as Busse-Kin is because they keep a great edge when Bushcrafting, hunting etc..........Sorry for getting off topic, I will now step down from my soap box !

No need to convert me buddy, I can't think of one single example of where a choil could be more usefull than a well designed blade with no choil !

the MO511 would be a good fighting knife. full flat grind special choil and tan and camo

I regret trading my MO 511, it's really the only Bussekin I can think of that I whole-heartedly regret letting go......

It was most definitely a cutter, probably the best Scrap Yard I've ever had in that regard.

While I had mine, I accidentally banged the edge right into a thick drinking glass which I didn't see sitting on the carpet.

I was pleasantly surprised that there were only a couple of microchips in the edge after that impact.

I have not seen one on the exchange since I traded mine off a couple months ago....

The more I think about the 611, the more I start to think that this one is not up for debate....

I have a strong feeling that the 611 will be exactly what was debuted at Blade 2011 with the rest of the 11' line.

Only time will tell on this one, so I'm not going to get my hopes up just yet.

I agree with you. but if i was in a fight I would wan a kin blade. why carry a hipoint into a fight when you can carry glock

Well, the boot HD Dagger is up for grabs right now... Throw some paracord round it, and you got your self a fighter worth more than any kitchenknife.

I too think Dan will bring the Reg. handle on the 611.
The majority of the '11 had the generic basic handles, which I love.
But I believe Dan will throw a bone to all those in to the Reg. handles.
Heck I may even go for it, and find out I like it...

That's better. "Boss Jack," while a knife I REALLY want to own someday, has a most unfortunate acronym....

I think you might be missing out not having a Boss Jack..... it's by far my favorite mid-sized blade at this point.

Anything Dan could whip up that resembles a Boss Jack crossed with a War Dog would be AWESOME!!

Six months is fine by me too. Just want it to not die.

And yes, I DO know what I'm missing. Had one once. Needed to sell and haven't been able to get one since. There's some nice G10 models floating around out there....sadly, mine is one of them...

Mud Jack or War Jack. Either way. Just thinking if we aren't united in our pleas then Dan won't hear us.
