Pumpkin Carving Contest?

Pumpkin Carving Contest? - 10/20/06 12:47 PM

Well Halloween is right around the corner. And since they won't let me take my scrapper 6 out to go trick or treating and have some fun, I propose something a little different.

Anybody up for an online Pumpkin Carving Contest. The rules are simple:

You must use your Scrapper 6, and only your Scrapper 6 to carve your pumpkin.

What you carve must be a pumpkin.

Post a photo of your Pumpkin, and what ever else you carved with your Scrapper 6 and the rest of the board judges.

The grand prize winner gets crowned the "Pumpkin King" until next Haloween, unless we can somehow scrape together a prize worthy of such a valiant challenge.

So what say you? Do you think you can handle the intense pressure? Or will you crack under the strain?

Peace
Jerry

Clear is my favorite color.

Why not? It's dressed up in its sheath as a belt-mummy, isn't it?

Too cool Jason! That’s a really good job. I was planning on using my Coot this year to carve my pumpkin. Since they always rot so quick anyway, I like to wait until the week of Halloween, and get my pumpkin on clearance. Last year I got mine for $1 at Walmart. They also make cool shooting targets when they’re cheap too. Shotgun! *BOOM* Splat! I’m not a very good artist, I usually make the regular type of pumpkin.

Just a reminder – I remember Warren mentioning that you could use pumpkin (or potato) to give a blade a grey patina. The acids in the veggies do this to the steel. So, if you don’t want a grey patina on your blade, don’t forget to wash it really well when you’re done.

Here’s some pics from my last pumpkin from 2005.

Here he is all lit up.

Added a few flames aorund the Head and refined the "Scrap Yard" Hope it is allright....lost a few layers of skin holding the blade like a pencil. Only used the Scrapper for this project.....the pumpkin leaves some interesting stains on the blade....gonna try something with it.

Re: Pumpkin Carving Contest? - 10/23/06 07:03 PM

You know I find it ironic that I carve a pumpkin with my Scrapper LE for the better part of an hour and had no blood loss, but one careless jesture while digging in my dresser resulted in a brush with it and I end almost losing the cushion on the end of my most important finger! Now how does it look when I show it to folks with a band-aid on it?!

Yeah, that's pretty ironic. So...were they stored lose in your dresser? That's why I store mine in the sheaths. Mine are so sharp it's dangerous to leave the edge uncovered.

A couple days ago I was sharpening my M6. To test the sharpness, I was grabbing lose cat hairs off my sweater. I held the M6 between my legs and grabbed each end of the hair with my hands. Without "sawing" it, I put just the slightest pressure on each end of the hair against the blade. I barely touched it and it cut it. Then I tried shaving and shaved a bare spot. That was sharp enough for me.

I had an accident a while back with my Howler, but I never took pics or told you guys about it. It was a couple cookouts ago, in late summer. I was waiting for the wood to burn down to coals in the grill. I was whacking at some wood with my Rats out of boredom. My Howler was a bit dull from hitting the wood with it. It wasn’t DULL, but it didn’t have its usual razor edge. I had a armsize piece of wood on its end like I was going to baton it. I was holding it on top with my right hand, and swinging my Howler at the top of it with my left. Where I was impacting was like 5 inches or so away from my hand. I had a thought…uh oh…what if my Essential Tremors cause my hand to move wrong, and I come down on my other hand with the Howler? Then I thought, nah, I’m far enough away I think it’ll be ok.

Well, I was wrong. See, another thing about essential tremors is that physical activity makes them worse. All that chopping, sawing, and carrying wood made it worse than usual. I ended up whacking my right thumb, right on the thumbnail. I was afraid to look. I cut pretty much all the way through the thumbnail, but I don’t think I cut the skin underneath. The skin under the nail where it hit was all bruised from the impact. Where it cut the nail was all jagged, so I used some sandpaper to smooth it all out so it wouldn’t catch on things and flip it backwards. Where I hit was near the end of the nail, and after a couple weeks it healed and that section of nail grew out. It’s all normal now.

I told my parents that it’s a good thing I hadn’t sharpened it first, or I would have lost the end of my thumb. I later sharpened it and let them inspect it. They both said “oh $h!t” when they felt the edge. I said, “That’s what we call “scary” sharp.” “Now you know what I mean when I said good thing it wasn’t sharp.” After that experience, I learned to keep my hands FAR AWAY from the edge while in use.

So Jason, be glad you at least didn’t whack your finger with the edge like I did.

Re: Pumpkin Carving Contest? - 10/24/06 06:02 PM

Andy, now I'm beginning to worry about you ! Be careful!!!

When I was 13, we were visiting my Uncle who always kept his little Case pocketknife razor sharp. One of his sons was being a PIA, so he told his other son to go cut a switch from a willow tree and for me to go with him. After he cut a switch, my cousin went to hand it to me for approval. As I reached for it, he decided to trim the leaves off the switch and slid the blade down the branch, slicing two of my fingers. We snuck into the house where I went to wash off the cut and get some band-aids, not realizing that I was dripping blood on the floors. When my Mom noticed the "spotted floors" she immediately realized somebody got cut (she really was wise to me ). She took one look at my hand, wrapped it in a cold-soaked washcloth, and off to the hospital we went. My middle finger was just deeply cut, but my index finger had the tendon severed and just wouldn't work right! After it was deadened, I watched the surgeon sew the tendon, then the rest of the fingers via the reflector. It took quite a while for them to heal, and I graduated 8th grade with a large splint on my finger. Lesson learned!!!

Bottom line - BE CAREFUL WITH KNIVES !!!

Re: Pumpkin Carving Contest? - 10/24/06 11:57 PM

Compared to you guys I have no real horror stories to compare... I did cut a finger down to the bone (on a knuckle) when I was running a whetstone down a real vintage Chinese war-sword (my grandad shot it's owner around 1936/7...) that bugger of a sword could bite! Fortunately no lasting effect other than a healthy respect of sharp steel!
Posted By: Private Klink

Re: Pumpkin Carving Contest? - 10/25/06 01:22 AM

Paul - That's quite a souvenir you have; an authentic Chinese war sword handed down from your Grandfather!

Re: Pumpkin Carving Contest? - 10/26/06 12:03 AM

Sadly the old codger found out I'd cut myself down to the bone and the sword went to live with a relative... It was pretty similar looking to the Cold Steel Chinese warsword but with a simpler S shaped brass guard. Said relative collects swords so no hope of getting my mucky paws on it again...

Not that we've seen. I looked today at Walmart, and they still haven't marked the pumpkins down. They're STILL like $3 or whatever. Most are starting to get soft spots and rot too. My Mom reminded me about the pumpkin shortage that they mentioned on the news, maybe that's why they didn't mark them down. Maybe I'll get one anyway and just pay full price. Mine won't look as nice as Jason's though.

However, I would like to point out that we helped each other by having a "running conversation" on this forum. We realized that we would reach the "ultimate status" working together, and did so.
