Scrapyard Puukko !

Scrapyard Puukko ! - 12/22/12 07:26 AM

The recent post about some people wanting some different designs got me to thinking, how many people would be interested in a Scrapyard version of a Puukko ?

Puukko's are generally hidden tang knives which would fit well with the Scrapyard hidden tangs.

I think a blade similar to the one below but with say a Mudder handle would be awesome and take care of all the cries of those wanting a Scrapper Bushcraft blade !

Very similar to the BD or the WD or a war dog

No choil and different grind, probably a similar size though.

If there will be a real puukko made by Scrap Yard, I´m in but if it´s something like puukko, I´m not. In my opinion War Dog is quite close to puukko, so there already exists something like puukko.

I´ll say it again: puukko.

Re: Scrapyard Puukko ! - 12/22/12 09:53 PM

This is the definition of a Puukko, I think the blade/grind is of more importance in defining it as a Puukko rather than the handle.

The basic components of a puukko are a hilt and a blade along with a sheath, which can be attached to a belt. The blade is short, typically less than 100 mm.
The flat back allows the user to place a thumb or his other hand on it to concentrate the force. Puukkos are used both as a tool for all kinds of carving, especially to work wood, and to clean the catches of anglers and hunters. Some puukko designs have a slightly upwards or downwards curved point, depending on what purpose the knife has. A hunting puukko's tip is often curved downwards to make skinning and opening the animal easier and less messy. The blade is relatively short, usually about the same length as the handle. Fisherman's puukkos sometimes have a small dovetail on point to ease scraping off the innards of a fish.

Most puukkos have a slight shoulder but No choil , since the point where the edge ends and the handle begins is also the point where most power can be applied. A puukko often has no guard to stop the hand from slipping onto the edge, but this is of no great importance, since it is primarily considered a cutting tool, not a stabbing weapon. In cases where the knife and the hand are expected to get wet, like if the puukko is meant for gutting fish or game, some form of guards are carved into the handle. The traditional length of the puukko blade is the same as one's palm width, usually 90–120 mm. Carvers, huntsmen and leatherworkers favour shorter blades; woodworkers, carpenters and constructors longer.

I'm not too familiar with the Elmax, would that be more prone to chipping than SR101 if it was a Scandi grind, I struggle to get over my nervousness of stainless steels !

Re: Scrapyard Scandi-Dog! - 12/28/12 04:52 AM

It's supposed to be a really good steel. BUT if it would make you feel better, Dan or Jerry's secret mix would be fine with me.

I just said elmax cause it does well in the kitchen, which doesn't mean it will do good in wilds. Maybe Dan needs to make a couple sample blades in different steels and divvy them for a few dogs to try.

Sort of a TTSD!

Re: Scrapyard Scandi-Dog! - 12/28/12 10:39 AM

I must say that I've never really been a fan of the traditional Scandinavian grind. But as long as its a high grind, like in your drawing, then I'd be in. My steel preference would be SR77, for ease of sharpening. Just my $.02, which really isn't worth even that much since this isn't my thread.

Re: Scrapyard Puukko ! - 01/02/13 10:27 AM

It has the one advantage of being cheap to manufacture.

they do cut well, due to the thin stock.

Re: Scrapyard Puukko ! - 01/06/13 01:09 AM

I've noticed Dan hasn't commented, I'm wondering if that's because it is too much work to set the machines up to do a Scandi grind or maybe just because he hates the idea, LOL !

Anyway I got to thinking today that if it's the first reason then how about a version out of 0.150" SR101 with a full height flat grind, this is the same stock thickness and grind as the Scrapivore which is described as a "cutter of the highest order "......sounds good enough to work as a Puukko eh !!!

Re: Scrapyard Puukko ! - 01/06/13 02:36 AM

Maybe it has something to do with the mudder grips. I see the 411 was only on the website for order for a short time, and some of the others have been on for months.

I still think the design is a winner.

I was rereading this and wondering if anyone has a Spyderco Bushcraft? My only experience with the scandi grind was a mora I had for about 10 minutes. I found it harder to do finer work with...seemed to bite the wood very deeply very quickly. That spydie keeps catching my eye- that handle looks super comfy.

I like how the Spyderco Puukko's bevel is larger than your typical Scandi, on their description they don't describe it as a Scandi grind instead saying it has a single straight bevel. Their Bushcrafter however is described as having a Scandi grind.

A Puukko can also be flat ground though as in the case of this one:

I can't see the Spyderco being any more comfy than a Yard version with Mudders !

Re: Scrapyard Puukko ! - 01/29/13 10:47 PM

Traditionally puukko was made with a blade that was flat ground - it´s very easy to sharpen because the angle is always the same when you place the blade on the stone.

Familiar looking logo on that puukko...

Re: Scrapyard Puukko ! - 02/24/13 02:45 AM

Sorry for the late chime in. But it looks to me basically like a Scandi-ground choilless 411. I would definitely be interested especially if it was in SR101. I was looking for a bushcrafter type blade to accompany my 911 and something like this would fit the bill perfectly. The other option I was looking at was the TOPS B.O.B. knife which is basically a woodlore type design. If Scrap Yard came out with something like that in SR-101 I would be on it like flies on crap. I think that would make an awesome bushcraft set a 911 and either the knife above or a woodlore type blade. I would definitely want the smaller blade to be a scandi-grind. Take it for what it is that being just my 2 cents.

regards,
Joe

I also love pukko/puukko blade style, but the thin edge seems more likely to roll on harder materials. However, the Bussekin super heat treat (magical fairy dust additive, etc) may not have this problem. I'd be interested to see that style offered.
