My Gun Shop?

My Gun Shop? - 01/25/13 06:18 AM

I went by one of my favorite gun shops today. It's an old, well established shop. All the guns were gone. He had sold them all. Ammo was gone too. I have seen panic buying before, but this is the worst. You can't even find a box of 22LR in this town.

Is this political? Just kidding.....but things are only going to get crazier I'm afraid......

Re: My Gun Shop? - 01/25/13 06:29 AM

Umm....I guess it is related to politics. It was just an observation. I had no idea the panic buying was so intense. Is this typical or is my town just more paranoid?

Re: My Gun Shop? - 01/25/13 06:36 AM

Yeah, lots of gun stores are totally depleted of ammo and especially evil black rifles.

Which reminds me, I should try and find some 12ga this weekend. There has to be more of that out there at least.

Re: My Gun Shop? - 01/25/13 06:46 AM

I think people are buying for a few reasons. Some are stockpiling because they are afraid Guns and Ammo will be taken away. Some are buying because they don't want to pay inflated prices down the road. Some are buying to resale in an inflated market. If I had the cash I would probably pick up a few things I have wanted/needed for awhile. I remember the cost of black rifles in the nineties and would rather not pay those prices again (I sold my colt ar15 to by a car back then).

I think it is a little rediculous the run that is going on right now.

Re: My Gun Shop? - 01/25/13 06:49 AM

I think its for resale, BUT a bunch of different gun shows are now under attack in SoCal. Places that have been hosting Gun Shows for decades without incident are now being pushed to stop hosting the shows.

Remember, knives don't run out of ammo.

Luckily its probably all decent honest people buying up the product

Supply and demand, like it or not.....it is what it is I guess.

BTW, you can barely find 9mm and .223/5.56 ammo online these days. It used to be quite plentiful only a year ago.....

Re: My Gun Shop? - 01/25/13 08:51 AM

One of my favorite guns shops has shut down because they have nothing to sell. They sold out fast and have nothing literally nothing to sell as far as guns or ammo.

Re: My Gun Shop? - 01/25/13 09:33 AM

Yes, the market is CRAZY right now! I managed to pick up some ammo from a couple of sources just before they ran out. I make it a habit to check the Sporting Goods section of stores when I'm out....don't forget to check out the farm supply stores. They will be priced a little higher but still have some ammo in stock.

Re: My Gun Shop? - 01/25/13 11:31 AM

Not too bad here. Most AR types and home defense shotguns are sold out, but there are higher end ARs and hunting shotguns a plenty. Some ammo is sold out at some stores, but a few are fully stocked. Gallenson's in downtown actually has a ton of ammo and the prices are the same as a month ago.

Re: My Gun Shop? - 01/25/13 11:33 AM

I am guessing it is because most of the people here already had a small armory. Gotta give it to the Mormons, they are prepared. Not to mention the silos and warehouses across this area packed with food.

Re: My Gun Shop? - 01/25/13 11:48 AM

was a line outside and around the parking lot at the guns show here a few week ago. $100 AK mags and $5K for a Colt AR15. The ammo was slower to go but .22Lr and .223 got wiped out pretty early on. 9mm was next and now pretty everything except the more expensive hunting stuff is gone.

was in a shop that had a six for section usually about 4 rifles deep. They had 6 M1A's and various out semi auto mag feed rifles. Some of that stuff would be there over a year or two. Everything was gone a few weeks later.

I think there are a lot of folks buying because it's the thing to do. Bumped into a couple guys who could even say exactly what they had bought. Soundedlike they just bought it "because". Then there's a few "I'll get it one day" folks who are buying in case that day doesnt come.

There's a lot of guns with crazy prices since this is a sellers market. Its makes for a good laugh when I hear the asking prices. I guess I cant really blame the guys but it's pretty crazy to see.

I really wish I could find even some of the higher end ammo.

Especially Hornady 75gr TAP .223. I wouldn't mind a couple hundred rounds of that for home defense. But no luck, not even online (at least from sellers I would deal with.)

Been wanting some boxes of that since before this whole thing happened, should have bought then. Hindsight is 20/20 I guess

Went to Shooters today. They had some revolvers......but no ammo for them. I was looking for some 38SPL HP. Oh well, guess I'll have to defend with the evil Glock I bought last year. I had never fired it until today. I have plenty of 9mm. It worked. Ugly gun, but it shot well.

Not one round of 22 lr or 223 there though...

Glock 17 generation 4 or some such. It came with 3 17 rd magazines. That's a lot of firepower. It has the light rail so I have a light on it. If something goes bump in the night, the Glock is what I grab.

You might want to pick up an Apex Tactical extractor for that, Glock is now using metal injected molded extractors in all their pistols. Many people have experienced brass to face issues because of this, but even if you are not it could result in malfunctions.

I've got one in my Gen 4 and I can highly recommend it..... Apex just got the Gen 3 9mm extractors in stock, but the Gen 4 version will be back in stock soon according to their newsletter.

I was talking to the guys at my gun shop. They were telling me that they have been getting calls from the U.S. asking if we have ammo and how to get it back across the border! Its not crazy up here, the shelves are still full of handguns rifles and shotguns, lots of ammo too. But they warned me that we are going to start running out because of U.S. demand!

Hoffmans. I went around 11 am yesturday and almost couldn't park. Could have knocked me over with a feather when I saw the Mini 14s there...they were almost $200 more than last month though..about $850 and up. Glock prices were same and they had a lot of 9mm ammo...not a lot of variety though.

I did see an AK and few black guns at BMGs a week or so ago, but the prices were sky high.

I'm a little torn on what to do/buy. I got in an order for a kel tec sub 2000 glock 17 model that will come in for a little over $300..but got no mags! I was waiting to buy them and waited too long. Can't imagine CT won't pass a 10 round mag max and reason I ordered the subbie was to have some fun with higher capacity! And I'm more interested in a glock 19 than the 17 but wouldn't have mag compatability!

I'll tell ya, I'm not the smartest buyer sometimes...

Re: My Gun Shop? - 01/27/13 01:21 AM

I just went to my LGS, they had a handful of black rifles on the wall still, and I got some (overpriced) glock mags in there too.

Their pistol counter was pretty full as well.

All their prices seemed pretty usual. Its an expensive store in general, but they are in the middle of a large city.

To get an idea of their prices, they had an FDE SCAR 17s with an ACOG on it for $4k recently (which was gone today.)

Hoffmans.

I tried my luck with them not long ago when they had the sale of the S&W AR with a few mags/ammo combo. They had about 100 of them and it was sold out long before I got in. All these panic buys are not helping us
Posted By: monsterdog

Re: My Gun Shop? - 01/27/13 02:02 AM

I think the panic buying is helping in the sense that legislators are seeing exactly how many people want to buy and own guns.

When I went to my LGS earlier today it was packed in there, a bunch of first time gun buyers were being shown various pistols by the staff and how to use them for self defense.

I saw more young (20-something) women in there today than I ever have before, and they all had their IDs out and were buying.
Posted By: KENKEN

Re: My Gun Shop? - 01/27/13 05:18 AM

You might be right in that sense. The issue is people can't find stuff that they want in stock anymore. No mags, no guns, no ammo....
Posted By: lazi

Re: My Gun Shop? - 01/27/13 07:05 PM

well I didn't think it would happen so fast but the pistol cases are pretty much empty here. bass pro has a pretty long pistol counter and all but the top shelf of the center was completely empty. and whats crazy is that 10 minutes away there's a pawn shop that sells guns and they looked fully stocked. my guess is that nobody outside of the city is really familiar with this shop since it's pretty close to downtown. but they actually had some pretty decent prices that are much better than bp on the handguns and so far they had only doubled the prices on hicap rifles. even saw a large keltec box there and you don't really see any of the hicap keltec capable stuff anywhere right now. didn't see much even before all lf this...

Re: My Gun Shop? - 01/27/13 10:09 PM

From all this talk I have deduced that if you have not purchased your ammo by now...you are totally out of luck. I doubt things will get back to normal. When was the last time you saw a local Wal Mart that had shelves devoid of ammo?
This is new, ugly territory.

Re: My Gun Shop? - 01/28/13 12:09 AM

They are still making guns too. It's that nothing is coming down the line to the shops. What's the bottleneck? Any idea?
Posted By: lazi

Re: My Gun Shop? - 01/28/13 02:04 AM

my advice is to watch slickguns.com. there was some 7.62x39 up for a fair price.

but yes for the most part the ammo and most of the handguns and longuns will be the exact same. I can undestand the magazine rush and even people wanting the modern sporting rifles they been putting off getting. but why everything is selling out right now is simply just what people do when they panic. temporaily good for economy I guess...

this isn't by any means teotwawki so all this does make a good case for being more of a prepper. all it takes is some type of panic.

From what I heard, there is a large production backlog from distributors, so if one distributor is waiting for 2000 guns from one manufacturer, the 250 shops they supply won't see them until the order is complete.

As for reloading supplies and cheap ammo, apparently the govt isn't selling their spent brass to the open market like they are supposed to by law, and destroys it instead. If they don't feed at least the alloy back into the market to make new virgin brass, manufacturers could have a hard time even finding raw materials.

I think right now is a great time to start some more firearms and ammo companies. If you can get a loan from a bank that isn't against those kinds of companies. Come to think of it, might be a grand time to start a bank specifically for that purpose

Re: My Gun Shop? - 01/28/13 03:50 AM

This was a lesson to me that supply can get wiped out incredibly fast. If there was a truly hairy situation brewing, the same would happen. Don't need too many days to really clear out stock...

Re: My Gun Shop? - 01/28/13 04:44 AM

I still just want a ruger 10/22, but can't find one anywhere and I'm just not paying the $75 transfer at my LGS. Plus they make me go through all kinds of bs and hoops when filling out the 4473 when transferring that I really don't need to.

So guess I'll wait and see if they are still legal when supply comes back in.
Posted By: lazi

Re: My Gun Shop? - 01/28/13 07:54 AM

most 10/22s should still be legal regardless of a ban. a stock 10/22 doesn't have a pistol grip, threaded barrel, or muzzle device, or anything evil does it? since they only ship with 10 round mags it's the magazines you would have to be after. and i've seen the hotlips mags listed at a few places for about $10 more than usual.

when the first ban came about there wasnt near as many conversion stocks and parts available. please correct me if I'm wrong but if I'm understanding things you can still build you own firearms with all the "evil" parts if you want to. so if you buy a AR lower and build your own gun then it can be as evil as you want it to be. or am I missing something?

you guys probably know more about this stuff that me. so is it that you a company can't make evil guns and we wont be allowed to go into a store and buy one. but if you want to you can build one?

Think about it, surgical strikes with drones, aircraft carrier, jets or helicopters would make having guns a moot point in my eyes. Middle easterners have guns, but it didn't work out very well for them when our troops invaded.....

Well, the only reason I want to buy one is to convert it into something that would be considered evil after a hypothetical ban. So unless it is specifically allowed in any configuration, the one I want would still be banned.

Also I think there is some language in the proposed ban which would ban any semi auto rifle capable of accepting magazines with more than 10 rounds. That would be an evil feature, which a 10/22 clearly falls under. The devil is in the details.

No, I was not suggesting that American civilians could stand against the full might of the military. On the other hand, want to bet on who is left standing in Afghanistan in a few years? A few million patriots with rifles can create a lot of mischief. Judging by the empty shelves here in my area, somebody bought a lot of ammo, pistols, and rifles lately. Why did they do that?

military might doesnt always prevail. there are plenty of examples of that throughout history.

whatever worst case scenario you can think of, it won't work out with a clear cut military vs. civilian conflict. the people aren't just gonna lay down. i reckon there would be plenty of organized groups and military separatism. which may be the reason why this UN arms treaty has been created.

I have a stronger weapon than all the bullets or rifles ever made.

I have a vote. I, along with like minded people, can shape the future of these Great United States of America.

We just proved it in Illinois by blasting our lawmakers with phone calls and email on two gun issues a bit ago.

We need to rouse the sleeping majority to the dangers anytime the govermnet threatens to limit our freedoms/rights "for our own good."

It sucks when you just want to go out and have some trigger fun in the woods, you cant find anything anymore. Not even steel cased 223, and I know our local AR shooters are afraid of the stuff

Re: My Gun Shop? - 02/27/13 08:17 PM

I hear that. I'm down to my home-d loads on my 5.56 and a handful of 66 grainers. It really sucks because I have a new rail on my AK and I need to zero the buis that's built into it, but I don't have any ammo to do so. Haven't shot my .308 in over a year either.

Re: My Gun Shop? - 02/27/13 10:40 PM

I hate to think of replacing any ammo that I shoot too. The thing i I need to sight in a rifle, try out a shotgun, and do a little practice too. The anti-gunners will love it that I have to give the amount of money for replacement ammo but what is the worth of having it and not using it? That is what they want.

The Wal-Mart near us says that they receive ammo in regularly, but it sells out immediately. You have to be right there when they put it in the ammo case.

just watching those sites I posted it seems prices are getting closer to normal. .22 ammo shows up but still goes quickly. and the prices and back down to under $4 a box. not sure what shipping does to the price. don't want to add to the panic buying mindset but with all thats pending I suspect there will be another wave of panic buying before its all over.

Well my brother and I had a discussion about BP firearms. I posted in the other forum about my thoughts on BP and being prepared. I think the ammo situation will finally smooth out and a supply chain restored again when the A** Bill falls flat on its butt and Frakenstien has to eat dirt. Hopefully, with continued pressure on Congress and the support of the Supreme Court this will pass and we can wake up from this nightmare we call life-----why can't people love the Constitution and follow it instead of making everything about government control?

Some people are so insecure, they cannot do any speaking without artificial help. They are also so insecure that the only way they can feel average is to become a tyrant, a dictator. Narcissism is a disease. Unfortunately it usually manifests itself in those who claim to serve others.

Re: My Gun Shop? - 03/03/13 11:39 PM

i've been thinking about that very point for a while skunk. i wonder what the prevalence of psychopathic or narcissistic personality types fill these jobs/career paths. you have to figure people like that are attracted to positions of power, as they have the most motivation to attain them. there should be tests for this.

Ever meet those who join all the right clubs, churches, and civic groups? They love attention. They love telling everyone else how to live and give each other various awards. Always the same people. The problem with electing our overlords is that the type of person who seeks such power is the last person you would want to have it. Maybe it should be more like jury duty rather than voting.

Re: My Gun Shop? - 03/04/13 12:57 AM

i've thought about that as well. an interesting system would have those that are willing take the psychological qualification tests, then be entered into a lottery where they win a chance to help out with the country.

and they wouldn't be able to make a career out of it

I saw at the last gun show, 223 going for just over a buck a round. Re: My Gun Shop? - 03/04/13 05:03 AM

I think it is a load of crap that the gov't is ordering so many rds for agencies within the borders of the US. Why?

Not seeing anything around here but then again I have not been looking real hard. I know most people are buying up what they can--some are storing, some are shooting, and others are flipping it for major money. It is a free-market but I am sure those who are flipping for a large amount really don't care about their fellow shooters or the Constitution of the US.

Re: My Gun Shop? - 03/04/13 08:08 AM

Who are the bullets for? According to the latest terrorism report taught at West Point, the gov't now fears the "Right Wing".

It says anti-federalists “espouse strong convictions regarding the federal government, believing it to be corrupt and tyrannical, with a natural tendency to intrude on individuals’ civil and constitutional rights. Finally, they support civil activism, individual freedoms, and self government. Extremists in the anti-federalist movement direct most their violence against the federal government and its proxies in law enforcement.”

Thing is, I can't recall any major news stories about such violence from libertarians. But they are included in the laundry list of potential terrorists. What about Lord Obama's buddy, Bill Ayers? Left wing terrorists aren't even mentioned in the report. But DHS is stocking up on ammo for some reason to use on SOMEbody.

the cia/dhs released a report a long while back that stated once they had their business in gulf in the bag, they would turn their attention toward so called homegrown terrorism.

there is also potential hyperinflation on the horizon. if so, its not much of a coincidence. along with the ndaa and chipping away at the 2nd amendment.

I have the same fears, WW. They are definitely gearing up for civil unrest of some sort. The way Bernanke is pumping out dollars with QE Infinite (85 billion per month), we may see the death of the dollar. That would be catastrophic for all of us.

What I really need as a prepper is one of my old M60A1 tanks, complete with armaments and ammo. They took off the turrets and dumped a bunch of them off shore here a few years ago to make artificial reefs for fish. Broke my heart. Why couldn't they give an old ex-tanker one for a keepsake? Now that DHS is buying armored cars (they call them tanks in this article), I need to upgrade to heavy armor.

they couldnt keep .22lr bricks in the walmarts here even before the panic. it would be nice to get some 9mm. I also wouldn mind finding a box of .308 that's not $35-$40.

i managed to pick up a box of tula 7.62x39 jhp for $6 a box at academy. it a box per caliber limit and they had a good bit left so i may drop by and get another box when i pass there again in the morning. don't think I'll be in line when the doors open for one box though.

I click on the site, one left in stock. Bam put it cart! Pow with credit card. Kapowie confirm buy! Then...I start reading more...CA is mentioned and bullet button. Wha? I run off to bath the kids. Since I buy the last one, I lose the screen they were on. I send in an email question and planned on calling from work- I get slammed and can't call. Come home to an email your gun shipped and why yes there is a bullet button! What a bullet button has to do with AR legality in CT, MA or NJ I do not know!

D'oh!! Oh, I hope my FFL sells on gun broker!

I was close! So close!!

I had a couple confusing t/c's with the place I ordered it from, but ran the model number and what I came up with was a regular mp 15 sport, just having the pinned stock for CT. I hope that's correct! It will all be more of a surprise than I like come next week!

DT sent me a link for Midway on .22 for sale. Got me 1 bulk box of 500. You really need to hit Wallmart and Dick's SG every day and eraly AM. I have really been doing well on the .22, 45, and 38 special. The ammo is there but you need to be the early bird. Ammo requires work now a days.

Re: My Gun Shop? - 03/31/13 07:25 AM

Just picked up 3 boxes of 45 at my local gun shop today. THey were out of 22 and 9. Had some 223, but I wasn't gonna pay $.90 a round for regular FMJ ammo.... 45 was $26/box for PMC. Not too bad a price. Stopped by Walmart later...bare shelves galore....

Re: My Gun Shop? - 03/31/13 06:24 PM

Picked up a DPMS lower at the normal price yesterday. Seems like the supply is picking up. When I got there in the afternoon they still had about a dozen AR's left. Ammo is still in short supply but they said the supply line is starting to open up.

Re: My Gun Shop? - 03/31/13 10:39 PM

I'm not sure how true that is. Still no ammo anywhere around here and I've been looking. Keeping a stockpile isn't a bad idea anymore. Orders from Midway and Brownells is still up in the air. I'm only shooting .22LR only because I have a few bricks of 'em left.

I hope so. A lot of money is being spent buying firearm related items that might be banned because of this and a lot of tax revenue is being generated. This has got to hurt other industries because people are too busy buying firearms and ammo.

Re: My Gun Shop? - 04/01/13 09:43 PM

oh boy here it comes for Connecticut...

"Under the legislative leaders' grandfather clause for high-capacity magazines, owners would have to submit to what lawmakers believe may be the first state registration procedure ever imposed on magazines, an informed source said Monday. The way it would work, owners would have to declare officially how many magazines they possess with a capacity greater than 10 bullets.

Under the new system, the high-capacity magazines – for example, a 30-round magazine – could never be loaded with more than 10 bullets outside the home, with one exception: The large-capacity magazine could be fully loaded at a licensed shooting range, the source said."

Re: My Gun Shop? - 04/01/13 11:22 PM

Limit mags to 10 rounds and less? Ok, let's go this route.

Talk the criminals into it, convince all the mayors/govenors that their mutiple bodyguards can split those 10 rounds amounst themselves any way they want (only protecting one guy after all), and make sure all law enforcement officers follow these new rules, and I'll be all for it.

The newspapers where making all kinds of noise about the polls this and the polls that. Now that the fever has died down and level headed thinking has taken over, they aren't quoting the polls anymore.

Re: My Gun Shop? - 04/01/13 11:24 PM

If law enforcement officers are allowed to carry 10+ round magazines for self protection, shouldn't average Joe citizen be offered that same level of protection?
Posted By: Mastiff

Re: My Gun Shop? - 04/01/13 11:28 PM

Even better, get rid of Bloomburgermeister's protection detail and let him protect himself with low capacity magazines. Same with Gov. Cuomo and Mayor Emamuel.

Give them the same protection as they offer me, a 911 call.

Pull all of the Capitol Hill police and make it all a gun free zone. That way no criminals will be allowed to have firearms. A since it's a declared gun free zone, the can issue batons to the police or just pull them all out and put them on the streets where the crime occurs. Then the Govenors, Mayors, Congressman/Congresswomen and Senate members can use 9111 like the rest of us.

If it wasn't for the fact that the capitol police are a good bunch, I like this idea. All gun ban politicians should forgo any armed security. By their logic more guns near them, means there's a greater chance they'll get shot.

"Excuse me Officer but I noticed that you're carring a Glock 17. May I check your weapon to insure you don't have more that 10 rounds in the magazine?"

We need to vote these lawmakers out of office and bring in people who will honor the Bill of Rights. I served 22 years protecting this great contry from enemies "foreign and domestic". It's looking more and more likely that we have more to fear for the "domestic" enemies than the "foreign" enemies.

And yes, I classify anyone that does not uphold the Constitution and the Bill of Rights as domestic enemies.

Wild right!?!?!?! A high ranking army reserve general had also issued a similar letter to those under him.

Re: My Gun Shop? - 04/03/13 12:29 AM

It is ridiculous how the minds of law makers work. I can not fathom the stupidity, or self-empowered, ideas of these people--make them responsible just like the rest of us. If it is good enough for me, then it is good enough for them is the way I see it. I teach in a deprived and low-income district and we do it without being armed and only one armed security officer a day but we have many violent offenders walking around us everyday so they need to loose their security details too!

As to the ammo, I doubt that we will see anything on the shelves at a reasonable price for some time. Like Klink says, the idea of the US destroying itself is upon us and our enemies only had to invest in our government, take our skilled labor jobs, and send idiotic ideas here like we are seeing on a unprecedented level.

May the Lord keep vigilance over the US and hopefully we won't have to worry about a war with DHS, or any other group.

I'm hit on mags though...came with a 10 rd one and I grabbed a 30 round this weekend. After manana, only 10 rounders will be legal to buy here. Took an hour extra than normal to process the ppwk...the store was crazed and people are blowing up the state registry buying guns today.

Glad I got the firearm though! Its the Smith an Wesson MP 15 Sport. Seems like a well built firearm and I won't be using it a great deal, so it's a good fit for me.

Nice find. Hopefully one day people will regain their senses and gun rights will return to your state.

I really hope some of the pro-grun NE folks make there way down to VA before we get overwhelmed by the influx of MD/DC residents into Northern VA and start to lose our rights as well. Ironically, they are leaving crime ridden, economically struggling areas for a better place to live and work and then want to support the same policies that ruined their previous area.

I read where DHS was taking delivery of some 2700 MRAP armored trucks. These big trucks are mine resistant and can stop a .50 cal round. They even have firing ports, like some old Soviet BRDM or BMP. Scary stuff. I hope the Marines and National Guard are on our side. I don't have any anti-armor capability.

Yep and they have more than a thousand on order. Plus they now have enough ammo to shoot every American citizen 6 times!!!! I hope the DHS agents wake up and don't go against the people who they serve.

The new Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agents are using them. Sure doesn't look like "investigations" to me. I guess they got tired of asking FBI for agents and decided to have their own.

Well, I just picked up one of the last legal ARs in CT! I made it in by a hair. Happy to say no bullet button like I worried about- got the correct model!

Next..ammo!

Good for you, RN. The M&P 15 Sport is a nice bare bones model. Mine was $699 out the door 18 months ago. No forward assist or dust cover, but it shoots as well as my more expensive ARs. It should serve you well.

Thanks Vic- plenty of gun for me I think. You don't here a bad word about them from folks who own them. Good to hear a good word from an owner here too!

Fixed the video link. It is the same one from the article.

I found out about HSI because I met a young guy hinting that he was an agent at a friend's party (not sure if he was or just another contractor at DHS). I hope he wasn't because naive and arrogant is not what you want in someone with that kind of authority.

Looks like ammo is finally starting to make it way back on the shelves. Picked up some 5.56, 7.62 x .39 and .38 yesterday - limit 2 each. Funny thing is there was no limit on .357. The shop got a whole skid of that and you could buy as much as you want.

My gun shops have little ammo, but it goes fast. LEOs visited me yesterday to shop for guns and ammo. They are short, too. They have known me for years. We are a brotherhood. Yes, I accumulated a fair number of "Personal defense weapons. There was much alcohol and tobacco consumed. As of now, I can still do cauaual sales in my state. We had a little ATF party. I did what I could to help these honoable men. We all go back over 20 years. Mostly ammo, pistols, amd self dense rifles were in demand.

Vic, I am glad that you take care of your guys because someday they may have to take care of you. Personally, I would let loose only if I had an ample supply for myself and family. If officers have to wait on ammo it is a shame, but then again we are having to wait too. I understand where the guys in NY and other places that are limited feel that the LEO group should feel the impact like the rest of us.

Re: My Gun Shop? - 04/11/13 05:46 PM

Hopefully the ammo producers will continue cranking it out. Eventually the panic will end, or people will realize they have no more room in their house/places to store it, and we can get back to shooting. It is a shame that the ammo manufacturers would not sell to the public first, then fill the DHS order. I wonder how the stock holders would feel if they knew that more money could have been made supplying the private sector instead of a bulk discount price to a despised government agency?

Re: My Gun Shop? - 04/20/13 02:32 AM

A letter I sent to my Senator:

Senator Warner,

I am writing to express my disapproval of your vote to allow the latest gun control legislation to the floor. While heartened that you voted against the so-called "assault weapons" ban, I am nevertheless disappointed with your decision to vote in favor of strengthened background checks.

In an email response to me when I voiced my hope you would vote against the measure, you stated that you believed strengthened background checks were the best way to keep guns out of the hands of those that should not have them.

Unfortunately for those that support this position, there is no evidence that this bill would have any impact on gun violence. It is an empty gesture designed to showcase that concerned politicians are doing SOMETHING to demonstrate how concerned they are on the issue. Moreover, it is unclear precisely HOW this bill would have "strengthened" background checks. It is already a crime to purchase a gun for someone not allowed to have one. The VAST majority of all guns sold already go through a background check. Moreover, I am deeply concerned over provisions calling for increased federal databases of any sort--particularly those involving people's mental health records (what about HIPA privacy guarantees?).

I find this legislation distasteful and I deeply resent laws passed simply to allow politicians to be seen as "doing something."

You talked about how you support the Second Amendment. I would appreciate it if your actions reflected that support.

Violence IS a problem. The underlying problems in our society need to be addressed. Increased background checks are not the way to curb violence. That is simply a feel-good band aid. This law will not prevent the next school shooting. Nor will the next law, or the one after that. You and I both know that. This is a slippery slope--addressing the tool rather than cause--where the public is continually promised this law will solve our problems. When it inevitably doesn't we are led to believe that it was because it didn't go far enough; the next law (further restricting rights and/or imposing greater burdens on law-abiding citizens) will be stronger and more restrictive. Where does it end?

Criminals will not purchase guns legally. Those intent on ill-will will always find ways to circumvent the system, or they will find other weapons with which to vent their anger--like pressure cooker bombs. What about the man in Texas who slashed 14 people with a knife? Will we need background checks on knives? Will that curb knife violence?

Senator, the problem is not guns. It is not the law-abiding citizens who use the background check system. It will not be solved by treating the law-abiding gun owners like criminals.

Focus on violence in the media--tv, movies, music, and the internet. Focus on the breakdown of the family unit and the impact of divorce on children. Focus on understanding the root causes of bullying in the schools. Focus on the root causes of why our society is producing more violent people. Do not focus on the tools those violent people are using to carry out their attacks. That is misfocused, misdirected, and mistaken.

Do not unite with politicians seeking to appease the public with temporary, ill-advised, superficial approaches. Be better than that.

Regards

Re: My Gun Shop? - 04/30/13 11:11 PM

A response from "my" Senator Tim Kaine. If he's yours too, you might consider this response:

Dear Mr. Harman:

Thank you for contacting me to share your views on proposals to reduce gun violence. I would like to provide some additional information on this important issue.

No one can deny that gun violence is a serious problem in this country today. We owe it to the victims of the growing number of mass shootings to vigorously debate specific and comprehensive proposals that can keep our communities safer. The right approach focuses on many issues - improvements to the mental health system, better security protocols and common sense rules about gun use, including keeping firearms out of the hands of dangerous individuals.

On the sixth anniversary of the horrible shootings at Virginia Tech, I took to the Senate floor to remember the 32 Hokies who lost their lives. The tragedy happened after a dangerous young man illegally purchased weapons due to flaws in the background records check system. I was pleased to cast my vote on April 17, 2013, in support of S. 649, the Safe Communities, Safe Schools Act legislation, which included tougher laws on gun trafficking and straw purchases, and ways to improve safety in schools. I also voted in support of a bipartisan proposal to expand background checks on gun laws, but unfortunately a filibuster of this measure prevented it from passing. I also voted for a ban on large-capacity magazines, and for a proposal to ban combat-style weapons. I am disappointed a minority of the Senate chose to use the filibuster to block common-sense reforms.

As your U.S. Senator, I will continue to work to bring that kind of comprehensive approach that will strengthen the safety of our communities, while protecting our Second Amendment rights. As a gun owner who worked with others to constitutionally guarantee Virginians the right to hunt, I know that you can be a strong supporter of the Second Amendment without tolerating the gun tragedies that are too often a part of our daily lives.

Thank you once again for contacting me.

Quote
Thank you for contacting me to share your thoughts on legislative efforts to reduce gun violence in the United States.

On December 14, 2012, 20 innocent children and six adults lost their lives in one of the worst, most tragic shootings to ever occur in the United States. As a parent of three daughters, this was the ultimate nightmare. Like the Virginia Tech and Columbine shootings, this tragedy unfolded in what was once regarded as a safe haven free of crime and violence: a school.

During the Senate's recent consideration of the Safe Communities, Safe Schools Act of 2013 (S. 649), I was very disappointed that we could not reach the necessary 60 votes for passage of a reasonable, bipartisan amendment to strengthen background checks. This compromise legislation put forward by Senators Manchin and Toomey would have closed the gun show loophole and prohibited the commercial sale of guns to those who are seriously mentally ill or have a criminal record while also upholding Second Amendment rights. Furthermore, its failure, which occurred one day after the sixth anniversary of the Virginia Tech tragedy, jeopardizes passage of the underlying gun safety bill, which includes our bipartisan CAMPUS Safety Act.

There was also significant debate over proposals to ban certain types of weapons and magazines. I voted against these bans because, after talking to numerous experts, I believe the most effective thing we can do to reduce gun-related violence and keep guns out of the hands of those prohibited by law from possessing them is to pass a strong background check law.

Moving forward, I believe that the Senate should continue to work to pass effective measures that will help to keep our children and communities safe. These include broadening background checks for gun purchases, making improvements to our mental health system so we can provide help to those with dangerous mental illnesses before it is too late, as well as measures to prevent gun trafficking, ensure all appropriate records are submitted into the background check database, and improve school and campus safety.

Warner is at least still opposing bans and his history prior to this has been good. I think with the right encouragement he would vote to uphold gun rights.

Re: My Gun Shop? - 05/01/13 01:44 PM

Libs poo-poo the NRA proposal to put armed guards or allowing armed teachers in our schools. But they think nothing of armed bank guards, armed guards and metal detectors in all federal/state buildings, and paying for a host of personal armed guards details for government officials.

Should I deduce that they value their money, judges and politicians more that their own kids?

Don’t those same politicians see the run on ammo and firearms from the American people? Does that seem like behavior of a society that is in favor of more gun control or less?

They didn’t listen to the vast majority of Americans that said “NO” to bank and auto bail-outs. Apparently we were too stupid to understand the ramifications of not giving billions to financially irresponsible institutions with little to no oversight. Turns out we knew better than they did.

Now, apparently we Americans are also too stupid to believe that the Constitution of the United States is the true law of this great country. These idiots that can’t even come up with a budget in what is it now, 3 or 4 years, now feel that they are responsible to protect us from criminal by passing laws that restrict our Constitutionally guaranteed rights. Criminals aren’t shaking in there sneakers (if they are, it’s from laughter), but knowledgeable law abiding citizens better tighten their laces before their boots come off.

We need to vote these bums out.

havent shot any in mine. i see mixed reviews on various forums. some guys say they would never do it. but this is lacquer coated steel... will probably only run a couple mags worth. if it shoots fine then I'll get a couple boxes to keep in the ammo case.

Just got in several hundred brass cased 223 I had on back order at Cabelas for several months with more on the way. I'll be unloading some of it since I wasn't expecting it in right now and I need to pay off the bill wink

not seeing any handgun ammo. i may hit a few shops today just to see whats new.

Re: My Gun Shop? - 06/08/13 02:33 PM

Been having good luck with 223 around here and via mail-order. 22 is still rough. Been ordering 50 rounds at a pop here and there with Cabelas...but ooosh- I want some bulk federal! And some 9mm I can use at my range.

Although I have to say, I've been shooting better even though I'm shooting less.

Re: My Gun Shop? - 06/08/13 03:14 PM

We shoot lots of 22lr with the kids - I think it's the best introductory round (after BB guns). Luckily, I can shoot in the back of the property here down by the creek. Just has to be 100ft from the house here out in the county.

Re: My Gun Shop? - 07/11/13 09:28 PM

Oh happy day! Was just able to order 200 rounds of nylon jacketed 9mm I can use at my indoor range!! Finally!!!!!! I've shot a grand total of 50 rounds of 9 in the last 2-3 months...

Been also chipping away at 22lr with a local Cabelas...50 rounds at a time online, but I've gotten a good 1000
+ rounds that way. Although I was surprised to see my CZ rifle didn't shoot cci segmented 22lr well at all...I thought I could put a rock in that rifle and it would shoot straight!

.303 Savage is a decent hunting round if you reload.

Klink, what model 1895 are you waiting for?

As to knowing what is out there I have messed up royally. During the lack of ammo I started shooting BP firearms again. Since then I have hardly fired a center-fire or rimfire but have been to the range several times. I don't even look much at the stuff at a store anymore unless it is a single shot, antique or BP. Sad but I am having a lot of fun with the smell of sulpher smelling guns.
