Scrapyards Elmax knives for bushcraft?

Scrapyards Elmax knives for bushcraft? - 03/23/13 09:26 AM

I have a few of these and think there are great slicers. I've sliced from peaches to salmon with mine. These knives take a sharp edge, they have great ergo's and weigh next to nothing. I have yet to put one through its paces out in the woods. I wouldn't baton anything large with it as that not what is is made for, but other than that has anyone use one in the field as there primary knife?

Which one you have? I am trying to get the 460.
I am always late on the exchange.

Hows the sharpening? Pretty easy? I want it as a edc in my Maxpedition Jumbo. Wanted a Wardog but finding that is harder!

I have all three. I like the 340 (the smallest one) the best. Its wider and shorter blade is a little stiffer. All the ones I got came with a so so edge. After I sharpen them on a sharpmaker and then stropped them they are scary sharp. They seem to hold an well (elmax). The 340 has the game warden shape blade with a better handle. I think they are new and unknown what a great value they are. With these you get a great handle, the thin stock high performance steel in an uncoated stainless blade that weighs nothing. I would love to see a larger slightly thicker 10" kitchen knife from the yard made in elmax.

I completely missed out on the Elmax knives. I hadn't heard of the steel before the Scrapyard used it and now Elmax seems to be everywhere. It sounds like good steel too.

Does anybody know if Elmax is going to be used by the Scrapyard again?

I have the 340 and the 460.

I think of them as perfect food prep and game prep knives.

Excellent handles.

I used the 340 on one camp out to make a fuzz stick it did a good job

I've used my 360 for some feathersticks / notching of sticks. Never worried about them failing...even though I batoned a bit with it (full disclaimer...thin, relatively green material). I like the Elmax blades...I am confident they will do much more than "slice"; however, that's where the warranty ends.

ZT's Elmax on the 0561 has been getting a lot of crap reviews for edge retention. Not sure if that's down to bad HT or what.

But I'm curious to see how Scrapyard's Elmax stacks up against it.

I think with the excellent Scrapyard heat-treat any steel they use will make a great bushcraft blade. The only thing preventing the knives being good for bushcraft are the use of choils.

I'd love to see a choil-less bushcraft knife from Dan. I know Jerry hates knives without choils, but perhaps Dan can pull one off...

Yes. Does that ever work? Is Dan swayed by the opinion of his dogs?

My MO 511 doesn't have a choil.

Well, it has a flat spot that essentially functions as a choil. It forces the edge to be further away from the index finger. If you want the edge to be closer you must choke up on the flat, which IMO is not a very safe place to put your index finger. Not to mention it would not be comfortable using in this manner for very long.

I suppose, but I don't find my index finger being THAT far away from the edge. I'd say the handle design keeps my finger further away from the edge than that little choil-like flat spot.

I think choils have their place, but in any blade over 5" the choil seems to be a waste. Bussekin's use of choils seems to be a design element more than for actual use.

Personal preference. Since they seem to sell I'd guess there's enough that like them OR don't dislike them enough to pass on them. Could also be that it's cheaper to produce them that way and it helps keep costs down.

Smart, successful businessmen always listen to their customers. And I would classify the Busse clan as both smart and successful.

I think choils have their place, just not on every knife or blade.
