A Bright Question For The Yard - 09/03/13 01:03 AM

If I could come up with a hunter orange (Res C) handle which handle should it be???

If I could make it happen, what blade should this type of handle be put on???

I would like your input and thoughts...no promises. Any feedback is well appreciated

Thanks

Dan

Regulator handle on a HUGE chopper! I'm still lobbying for a Magnum Regulator.

Maybe too much orange. How about a .150" War Dog?

Re: A Bright Question For The Yard - 09/03/13 01:07 AM

A typical "Bushcrafter" Blade, mudders of course. That style of blade is good for SO many things. Make it 4.0 inches from tip to grip and no choil, sharp all the way to the plunge line.

Oh and a flat grind would work too.

Re: A Bright Question For The Yard - 09/03/13 09:55 PM

i don't think we have seen a LE blade in a while.

orange mudders one some 154CM or ElMax would be a pretty nice addition to the LE lineup. would make for a pretty handy outdoors and utility blade. while i'm a muk fan and would love to see another muk variant maybe a 411 LE with orange mudders. or a 511 LE with mudders. LE with mudders is what i'm saying...

Re: A Bright Question For The Yard - 09/03/13 10:07 PM

I like the LE idea. Especially since I like my orange handles mostly on satin type finishes. I'm open to whatever offer comes to be though.

For some reason I always forget how thick it is. 3/16" thick(or less) SR101 would be pretty nice. I'm just really digging that blade shape.

3/16" thick is great on mid to large blades. smile

Orange War Dog handle on a black or satin Boss Jack blade.

Or:

Orange basic handle on a black 1111 or 1311

Or:

Orange War Dog handle on a satin Kephart style blade.

I like the idea of a BDLE style blade but a bit thinner, SR101, mudder handles. I think this would be a great fishing blade.

The Wardog HACK (Busse Combat) is the same SPINE thickness, but it has a VERY DEEP hollow grind. almost like a razor. Weighs almost nothing to carry and you would never realize how thick it is unless you needed the "Beef".

Re: A Bright Question For The Yard - 09/05/13 06:47 AM

Lots of good ideas coming out here but I'm finding it hard to make a decision. I missed out on the 'Muk so that might be nice. Oh, and I think DT's idea of orange on big black blades would look really cool. But the the 411's my favourite SYKCo, so I want one with orange Res C. Ah now the Regulator is the knife that I keep Googling pictures of 'cos I need one so bad! Then again, a Scrapyard bushcraft knife with orange handles would be awesome...

How about an Orange Range to follow the 11s: all the Scrapyard Knives with orange handles? laugh

I think it's a good idea to have one knife that's hard to loose. In low light conditions it's not easy to find a knife from the ground even if you just left it there for a second.

Re: A Bright Question For The Yard - 09/05/13 08:28 PM

Also, regarding orange and not being lost I'd just like to point out a couple things.....

First, you should never set a knife down in the field as its far too easy to lose even with bright colors. Always put it back in it's 'home' when you're done with it, even if you'll need it again soon.

Second, Fluorescent colors like orange and such will do you no good if your knife gets covered with debris such as leaves. I've been present when a bright yellow GPS unit was dropped on the way to the deer stand, we will never see that GPS again as Michigan woods are loaded with leaf litter.

Good points AFF, thanks for posting! I've been thinking similar things myself. I know of other GPS units that have been lost on military training areas over here, as well as other bits of gear that have gone missing. It's vital to put your kit where it belongs and make sure that it's secure!

Scrap Kukhri sounds awesome! Though maybe a little expensive...(funds aren't what they used to be frown...)

Been away for a while and very surprised to see this from Dan.

I would have to say something in an orange mudder would be a timeless classic.

Now my personal favorite would be an orange magnum regulator.

I still think a 9"-11" regulator handled knife about 3/16 thick would be hard to beat.

Or a steel shard wrapped in a Twizzler! We're desperate!

Twizzlers offer up sooooooo much more grip than Red Vines.

That was my next point. Yes, 550 cord is great emergency cordage. But twizzlers are great emergency FOOD! Which would YOU rather have?

Might take some thought to figure out how to reuse it, though.

Wanted to clarify my thoughts on mudders. I would anticipate that this shouldn't take any extensive new work for SYKCO (from a color / mold perspective), as you made an orange res-c mudder that was put on a Scrapper 5 SE variant for a Ganzaa way back when. Along with purple, and a few other unique colors. So...they exist laugh

Re: A Bright Question For The Yard - 10/09/13 03:42 AM

I would absolutely love to see an orange handled War Dog. SR101 is good to keep price down. Only make it 3/16th inch. Satin or black for the blade or maybe comp finish. Much as I LOVE the WD, it's thickness makes it harder to hold an edge as long as I'd like--no more than 3 deer before it needs sharpening. But the shape is great for that job. Poor man's Pork Shank. grin

Re: A Bright Question For The Yard - 10/09/13 03:44 AM

War dog first. Mudder second, preferably on a 411 or other more narrow blade.

Re: A Bright Question For The Yard - 10/20/13 02:24 AM

Really hoping we get an orange handled 411. I've had a black handled one sitting around in my knife drawer with no pants--unused and unloved. I keep thinking it would be a PERFECT hunting knife (is there such a thing as a perfect knife?), but would much rather have an orange handled one for the practicality of being able to find it again once I set it down in the field at night. That would definitely inspire me to get some pants and get it out into the field.
Posted By: Ishikawa

Re: A Bright Question For The Yard - 10/20/13 11:22 AM

You don't find the 4-11 a tad "thick" for hunting? No doubt it can function...just a bit heavy the way I usually process aminals laugh Curious as to your preferences.

If you're going that thick, the SS4 gives better control of the tip...an important interest of mine while gutting.

I wonder if the custom shop would throw an orange handle on my bog dog? laugh
Posted By: DogTired

Re: A Bright Question For The Yard - 10/20/13 11:28 AM

I'm using the War Dog for hunting. It's thicker than the 411. SS4 is not readily available or affordable wink
Posted By: DogTired

Re: A Bright Question For The Yard - 10/20/13 11:31 AM

Or do you mean wide? I'm also using the RMD. both seem to do a fantastic job. of course this is gutting, skinning, and quartering. Final butchering is done mostly with an elmax.
Posted By: DogTired

Re: A Bright Question For The Yard - 10/20/13 11:32 AM

An anorexic War Dog with a slightly shorter blade and mudder grips would be better still grin
Posted By: Ishikawa

Re: A Bright Question For The Yard - 10/20/13 11:34 AM

Right, understood....I'm just speaking about "field work" as well. Gutting, Skinning, and Meat Retrieval.

Maybe I'm spoiled with my Gene Ingram's. DT, have you ever tried a thin, 3-3.5" blade? FFG?

An RMD would seem like a BEAST for me to work with...

The beauty of a 5" blade is in how fast it skins and--in the case of the RMD and the WD--how easily it takes apart joints. I've used 3-3.5" blades. Used to be all I used. Now I have a hard time with anything under 4". who knows how I'll feel in another few years though wink
Posted By: Ishikawa

Re: A Bright Question For The Yard - 10/22/13 12:21 PM

Gotcha. I've seen different ways people process deer....like popping joints, etc. I use a bit more finese than some techniques I've seen (not clear exactly how you do it)...but I get up in the joint and literally cut out the tendons / surrounding connective tissue, thus allowing it to just fall apart.

I guess the shorter knife just feels like a natural extension of my forefinger. Maybe it's just a matter of what you learn on....but you didn't learn on big knives, so I dunno.

I've tried an S5 before...just felt "clumsy" to me....I was cutting meat all over the place. Not like a surgeon, more like Jason laugh
Posted By: DogTired

Re: A Bright Question For The Yard - 10/22/13 12:31 PM

I'll admit it's not the prettiest, bit it's faster amd easier to me. Processing upwards of 15 or 20 deer a season, I've seen finesse go out the window. wink
