Re: Mud Mutt is up! - 12/18/13 04:49 PM
Or maybe I should just save my dollars for a user DSSF/DSFTM or Boss Jack...those might fill more of a "void." I have several in the 4-5" range. All very useful, but it would be good to know if this one actually fills a niche well enough to justify putting something else out to pasture or out of as frequent a rotation.

Re: Mud Mutt is up! - 12/18/13 04:51 PM
The pics on the website give a better perspective and make me think it would make a better hunting blade than I initially thought. There may be enough of a point on it after all to help effectively gut, while having a good length/thinness to be a good skinner and processing blade....

I would not be worried about stains. Res-C is nearly impervious to most substances. While we have no data on the specifics...if stripper doesn't hurt it, I sure as hell wouldn't be afraid to get it bloody.

I must be the odd man out but a bit underwhelmed on this one. I like the steel and the thickness, but don't need another 5" blade. Unless it had been a muck....Now that I would have ordered a half dozen at 99 bucks ea!
However, whoever orders these will undoubtedly be getting a formidable blade. My pack is full of Scrapper 4's and 5's.

Nah, I'm really wrestling with this too. I have a WD, an RMD, a 4-11, two 5-11s, and a variety of non-Bussekin 4 inchers. Like I said earlier, wish there were some user reviews to go off of before risking it. It will be a great blade, for sure!

Aaaa_cccc I think Greaser. I wish the Mud Mutt was satin, as it is I can't really find a use for one in that thickness.
Posted By: greaser
Re: Mud Mutt is up! - 12/19/13 05:23 AM
Satin is only some stripper and a belt sander away. Lol
I like your attitude!
Well I jumped in and ordered two, one with a sheath, and another Hot Diggity Dagger. But at $60+ shipping it may end up being my last Scrapyard. Postage just seems to be going through the roof at the moment and unfortunately I just lost my job, so...
Still, looking forward to the Mudd Mutt!

Who was the anti choil guy? My memory is [censored] nowadays.
LOL, that would be me.
The Mud Mutt is so close to being perfect for me as an EDC, but the choil is a pretty big turn off for me (duh). No love for full convex grinds either, that would have been nice too.
At least it's good to see things headed in the right direction as far as thickness goes. This knife is about half as thick as it would have been if it came out years ago.
Posted By: rth548
Re: Mud Mutt is up! - 12/19/13 02:19 PM
I still say the 411 in this thickness would be the perfect knife.

It also has half the choil, not saying your view point on choils is wrong AFF I can take them or leave them.

Re: Mud Mutt is up! - 12/20/13 01:28 AM
No worries, grease. I believe many people feel the same way about being indifferent to choils. I just happen to have a very strong preference against them, unfortunately.
I'm thinking about having one of these modded to remove the choil, full convex regrind and full satin finish. It would probably cost at least as much as the knife is selling for though, but I guess it would be worth it to end up with a grail of sorts for me. I hate being poor, LOL.

This. One of the reasons I bought two is so I can immediately strip and satin finish one. Might change it to a trailing point too, depending on overall geometry. Can't wait!!!

It's too expensive to modify the knife. (EDIT - unless you do it yourself).
It really is expensive having knives modded, but in my case I may just have to suck it up and go for it. I would just do it myself, but I know I won't do as good of a job as somebody like norcalblacktail.
Not that I can really afford it either, I'm expecting my first baby girl in April and my money should really be saved for this. But the 1311 and Mud Mutt are SOOO close to being perfect for me that with a little bit of grinding they would be just that.
I got a quote recently for having a 1311 fullly convexed and satined for $175, ouch! I almost thought it was a car repair bill for a minute. I'm sure the Mud Mutt work won't be much cheaper either. I have knife problems......

I would buy two if there is a chance that you or a friend would really like it. You can always sell the extra, give it as a gift - or just have one in a BOB or for travel.
I am pretty sure that you will be able to sell it for about what you paid so the risk is relatively low.
I have a bunch of knives that I don't use but there is safety in numbers - so I just keep them.

Re: Mud Mutt is up! - 12/22/13 01:48 PM
I will have to try to find some -- the website is down.
The problem that I have is that I cut a lot of vegetation when I am in the tropics with mine. Sometimes I get staining/rusting along the cutting edge of a non-coated blade within a few minutes of use. Literally 5 minutes and I have stains starting to show.
I don't have the problem when I am just chopping wood. And I never see anything like it in the upper midwest. Maybe the vegetation is more acidic.
No stripping of the 1311 for me. I love that coating! I have such a time with keeping the blade clean to prevent rust. It would be awful purty though.

Ive been on a Flashlight kick but after getting a knife for Christmas I've been steered back in the right direction. Ordered mine (414) the next day. Can't wait to get my hands on that mudder.

You won't regret it. Best handle I ever held on a knife.
I'd been eyeballing the 411. But the mud mutt looks like a winner.

I agree. The Mudder handle seems to work well with large or small hands. Soon I will take my Mud Mutt out for a walk in the woods. Maybe it will fit the Ratmandu sheath.

Dan hasn't changed the price from $99 in the store yet, although the description notes that "This pricing is only good on orders received by 12/31/13. All orders received after this date will be priced at $119.95", so I'm unsure what they'd do if you placed an order today.
I passed on the Mud Mutt -- it looks to be a very good knife, but I have more than enough steel for multiple lifetimes already, so I've been saving my $$ due to uncertain times. I still have a pretty good paying job, but there's been much restructuring and my department keeps getting smaller; IT is down to 1/3 of the people we used to have.

Hi everybody first time posting over here in the Yard :-) I'm usually over on BF, but I'm also on Busse and signed up at the Swamp.
Quick question, first time ordering on SYKCO went for two Mudd Mutt's and came back for a third :-) Think I'm gonna really enjoy MM !! Only have an Urban Regulator so far that I scored from a friend. Well anywho I checked my order and it show's my shipping charges for two MM being $58.95 and single MM $54.95 Anyone else have this happen ? When I selected shipping it showed $14.95 and then became $1.00 both times. I sent two emails in so, i'm sure it will be corrected soon. P.S. I'm only shipping To CT.

Re: Mud Mutt is up! - 01/01/14 11:21 PM
I'm sure it will be fixed when they actually charge your card before shipment. If you e-mailed Renee she'll respond, but maybe not right away due to the holidays.
Welcome to the Yard!

Re: Mud Mutt is up! - 01/01/14 11:28 PM
Ok I think I know what happened but don't know why or how. After reviewing my emails and seeing listed shipping charges. I figure somehow I got charged international shipping charges they seem to match what charges I'm showing. So hopefully it's an easy fix, since SYKCO only dings the C/C and doesn't fully charge until just before shipping.
On another note does anyone know if any Mudd Mutts shipped :-) :-)
Luck,
Thanks for the welcome !!! As I gather more SYKCO blades I'm sure I'll be around here more :-) yeah I figure the holidays will slow a response. But I know the customer service is top notch !! so I'm not worried. Very thankful for the generous deal they offered :-) scored a sheath too !!

Welcome to the Yard!
It's possibly tied to IP address. The webstore software stores your IP and may set your shipping after the interrogation returns an IP outside of the USA.

I had originally thought I would pass on this blade but after thinking about it, I am going to pick up a few to play with. I have always wanted a SY Kephart and I think this might be an interesting blade shape tp play with.

So is it safe to say the Mud Mutt has the same handle as the 411 ? Cause I hope so, because I scored two 411's in recent Ganza :-) at least I will know what the handle is like.

Hey Private!
Congrats on getting your knife. I'm a little confused on a couple of things, though.
I thought the Mud Mutt wasn't available with a black handle, only the sage. I would have preferred black, but there wasn't (and isn't) an option to change it on the order page.
Also, the sheath doesn't look
anything like the one on the order page.
Any reason for these differences?
Thanks and Happy New Year to all!
The black handle was only available to the Mods; the knives for sale will have the tan/grey handles. The sheath in the picture is one that I'm working on; it hasn't even been stitched yet.

Wow that black on black looks killer. I ordered an MM and am looking forward to having it in my grubby paws BUT, I have to admit...I'm not keen on the sage-colored handle.
As someone who has ordered many knives from Dan and the crew, IMHO, the black-on-black color scheme is THE defining look of a Scrap Yard knife and I wished the MM had followed suit.

Re: Mud Mutt is up! - 01/26/14 08:18 AM
It depends on how you use a knife. If you like to "Choke up" with your thumb and index finger are directly one above the other it will add to the usefulness. If you don't choke up like that it won't matter.

Question? will blood stain the lighter colored res-c handles?

From what I understand (and being an UNwilling test subject) the Res-C is VERY stain resistant. Matter of fact I don't remember anyone saying that it has stained on them.

I have a SW Battle Guard in a saddle tan leather sheath. The tan Res-C
does take on some of the color from the dyed leather after a LONG while, but it always scrubs off with Dawn dish soap.
Good info S/P!

Re: Mud Mutt is up! - 02/13/14 10:08 PM
That was also mentioned over in the Busse s/f on BladeForums, and I noticed too. I would attribute it to manufacturing tolerance.
All you would need to get that kind of difference per side is a change in the direction perpindicular to the blade of about 0.015" while making the cuts for the primary grind. That's not much, and I can see that easily being the case.
Say, for example, they have 500 blade blanks to grind. They chuck all of them up in the CNC machine and cut one side. They then change the tooling in the machine to cut the other side, and proceed. Say the bit moves slightly, is changed, or dulls down a bit, etc. There's your 0.015" difference. It's really something more along the lines of +/- 0.007". Even smaller.
Of the pair that I received, one is asymmetric like this, while the other is not. On the symmetric one, there is about 0.55" of flat to the edge of the primary grind, so it about splits the difference.
