So what do you dogs think the new blade will be?

So what do you dogs think the new blade will be? - 03/07/15 10:35 PM

I'm thinking a Scrap-a-rucki or a Golok. Long and thin. Some great blades are made in 5160 and it will be interesting to see how the Busse heat treat raises the bar.

Thanks for S&P Dan

Now the waiting begins

Klink, is 5160 more corrosion resistant than sr101?

And no one is taking a guess? Then a ruck or golok it is!

M/M, 52100 should hold an edge slightly better, but 5160 is considered tougher according to what I Googled. The heat-treating protocol is important, where Bussekin excels. They both will rust, but supposedly the 5160 will rust more evenly. I'm not afraid of 5160; it's a good spring-steel used by a lot of swordmakers. wink

Re: So what do you dogs think the new blade will be? - 03/08/15 06:08 AM

5160 is a medium carbon spring steel. People make knives and swords of that steel. Choosing this steel indicates in my opinion that the next knife is going to be long. Though I was hoping it would be 6-7" and thin... laugh Good blade steel and in the hands of Dan.... Well, I know I´m excited!

Just Spitballing. But with the Busse's History with the Walking Dead and Zombie flicks (resident evil) I'm going to say a replacement for Michonnes blade.

The Zombie Whacker 15.

I dream of a ResC handle Zilla Kuk of some type. But would love to see a katana type blade. Just excited for a new model.

A 22 inch Scrapytana! All for under $300.00. OK, $350.00 with Horse stall rubber mats for bolt on handles! 3/16 inch thick and NO Americanized Tanto tip. This will be a Zombiepocalypse blade for cutting everything soft, except for the bones.

Council tools uses 5160 for their Velvicut premium axes. As far as a guess on what the next yard knife will be, Muttchette has an awesome name, golok style would be sweet.

I'm thinking this from Dan's vague description. A Scrap-a-Rucki would be a GREAT pig sticker!

I'm liking small neck knives for summer more and more. Right now it's an izula 2 with a para wrap. I'd love it if it was sr101. Maybe a variation on the scrapivore with a little more handle? That's more of a wish though. wink

Agreed!!! I think we're finally going to get a Res-c Khukri! Old design that is known for 5160 steel. Hopefully a Regulator handle. cool

Re: So what do you dogs think the new blade will be? - 04/01/15 01:43 AM

Bill Siegle makes very fine camp knives and choppers from 5160 steel, and nobody ever complains about his knives. Add in the magic of the Busse Heat Treat expertise, and this should be a great blade.

How about a Res-C machete, 16 - 18" blade at 1/8" thick?

Re: So what do you dogs think the new blade will be? - 04/01/15 04:16 AM

I would love to beat on DogZilla. Put the regulator handle on a 12-14" recurve like the Zilla or slightly straighter like the MOABolo to keep cost down by using a little narrower stock.

Re: So what do you dogs think the new blade will be? - 04/01/15 07:50 AM

Maybe there's enough magic to take some of that 5160 and fill in the choil on any 411's left lying around smile

I realize it doesn't work like that, but a guy can dream. I think the 411's just about a magic slicer but I don't typically like choils on smaller knives.

Re: So what do you dogs think the new blade will be? - 04/01/15 07:52 AM

That being said.. a beefy chopper would be awesome with the 5160. Any shop that turns out beasts like the 1111 and 1311 knows their choppas.

I think the Winkler axes are 5160. I wonder how it compares to S7 in edge holding. A 1-hand rucki pig sticker sounds good to me

They were 5160. Daniel now uses 80CrV2 for almost all his blades. Although I think some of the breaching / rescue axes may be S7 or H13 still, and there are some smaller knives in 3V and CPM 154.

5160, with a non botched heat treat, should perform very similarly to S7. Both are lower to mid carbon steels tha t reach the upper 50's in RC and have a lot of toughness / ductility.
