Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 03/18/15 02:21 PM

Dogs

As we discussed at the last Sip-N-Talk, the next offering is going to be a knife with a popular handle, .150" to .200" thick and made of 5160 steel.

Led with the crescent and hung as needed. The hunter should enjoy this blade as well as the person who needs to clear that which impedes their path.

The knife will be offered on the Scrap Yard Shopping Cart and a special price will be offered to any Dog that is in good standing on the Scrap Yard Forum

Lead time to offer...2 Weeks

More to come

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 03/18/15 04:11 PM

Hanging crescent reminds me of the shriners. Surely it isn't a scimitar.

As for the handle, my guess is its the mudder handle. It is very popular here.
Posted By: GeneralDelivery

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 03/18/15 04:31 PM

I was thinking Regulator handle.
Posted By: Spider-Pig

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 03/18/15 04:41 PM

Really? I love the Regulator handle, but it seems to me that it doesn't get as much love as it deserves. I hope I'm wrong!

It actually makes more sense on a blade used for clearing brush.
Posted By: Hooker

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 03/18/15 04:51 PM

I would bet on a DeRegulator handle on this unnamed beast. But I would like to see a Magnum Mudder created. But that sort of investment is unlikely for limited models.

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 03/18/15 04:52 PM

I was thinking the mudder handle, but I´m not too picky about the handles. It´s good to hear that the blade is not going to be too thick. I´m really excited about this one!

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 03/18/15 05:28 PM

I'm going to guess a regulator handle. Maybe a Golok style blade.

You shouldn't tease us like that Renee, SOME of us are old and feeble and can't stand stress. You should just tell us so we don't have a stroke or something. wink

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 03/19/15 12:38 PM

Alas, I may have to set this one out. What with just buying a B8 and getting a new rifle the "Fun Funds" are sorely lacking.

Now if Dan wants to take a Kidney as collateral we might be able to work something out. I've always made good on it and have been able to get it back each time. I can prove it if he wants to see the scars.

I would use something else but the Kidneys are about the only thing that's working pretty good. smile

While I appreciate your position....I appreciate the fact that DOGS are coming out from hiding due to all of this excitement. This board has seen a steady decline in activity for the last 12 months or so...and now we're seeing a bit of rejuvenation. Don't kill it!

PS - To be clear, I don't think you are intending to slow participation on the board....but I don't want anything to slow down right now laugh

You have to be very methodical in solving Busse riddles.

a popular handle: Res. C

.150" to .200" thick: Skinny

made of 5160 steel: ?

Led with the crescent: Has a choil

hung as needed: comes with a sheath

for the hunter: not too long

for clearing a path: not too short

My guess is a skinny 811 with choil and sheath.
although I never guess correctly so maybe its a Kukri.

Does anyone have a guess to what the hint means?

"Under The New Old Model"
Posted By: SkunkHunter

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 03/21/15 06:45 AM

It probably refers to the "Old" Business model. Meaning that Dan will announce a "New" knife up for sale for a period of time, taking orders and then after a while stating that it is now closed for ordering and then later on bringing out a different model and repeat.

This would be awesome! shocked If its an 8-11 I hope its .200" thick> Dan said between .15 and .20, .15 ago is OK on the smaller blades

Hahaha! So much for "I've got time to get another 411 and maybe a Safety Mutt" grin

Who am I kidding? Let's see what the next blade is! Can someone say...sMUTTchet? The Yard's Smatchet!

As Major W.E. Fairbairn described it in the classic 1942 educational pamphlet "Get Tough":

"The psychological reaction of any man, when he first takes the smatchet in his hand, is full justification for its recommendation as a fighting weapon. He will immediately register all the essential qualities of a good soldier-confidence, determination, and aggressiveness.

Its balance, weight, and killing power, with the point, edge, or pommel, combined with the extremely simple training necessary to become efficient in its use, make it the ideal personal weapon for all those not armed with a rifle and bayonet."

The knife I regret not buying is the 1111 but with two new 1311's on the shelf at home, it was really hard to hit the "buy" button.

I agree adnj, the 1/4" stock on the 1111 seems like it would make a sweet chopper, but after aquiring a 1311, I put those funds to other uses.

Crossing my fingers for a kukri!!! I really lost interest in the yard when it went to "standard models". The limited availability is what drew me in, sure not every knife might be the knife for you. But who knows what s coming next! Glad to hear its back to the old ways..

The knife will be offered on the Scrap Yard Shopping Cart and a special price will be offered to any Dog that is in good standing on the Scrap Yard Forum

Lead time to offer...2 Weeks

More to come

Go check the Busse forum on BF right now. Got a feeling those are the new blades we've been waiting for!! Oh yeah, look for page four of the Knob Creek pics-

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 04/07/15 08:10 PM

Looks like several variations so who knows which one it might be or if it might be them all!! Or who knows, I guess none is possible

Sorry guys, I might have blown the horn a little to early. Looks like mosttly micarta on those blades.

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 04/07/15 08:32 PM

I take it the "popular handle" could be micarta.

If all those blades on the new Busse wall pic are SYKCO 5160 micarta handled goodness I am in.

If not I still want them and whatever Dan has planned for us!!!!

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 04/07/15 09:00 PM

I would be horrified if SY went away from ResC. Nothing better for a knife you use.

Cannot wait for the new release. Bring on the picture Dan

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 04/07/15 09:25 PM

Those handles look to be Ratmandu scales, no Talon hole. So either a swamp variation or a new beast from the fertile mind of Dan, digging through the scraps?!!

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 04/07/15 09:26 PM

The handle shape reminds me of the Rodent 6 handle.

Waning crescent
10 to go
Leads to black

The waning crescent might just be the crescent moon. The crescent moon is on April 15th. The new moon is the the 18th. A place to hang may be the closest tree that I'll have to hang myself from after I pay Uncle Sam his taxes. wink

Look at the first 3 columns.

with the comment about a popular handle I wonder if Dan didn't snag a boatload of RMD handles and made some choppers.

well that looks to be a 10inch blade and the RMD handle is popular but I would have a hard time believing Scrapyard would move away from Res C handles, especially since the other 2 branches of Busse are using standard micarta/g10 handles but who knows.

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 04/08/15 03:08 PM

I agree Res C is a Yard staple. But I'm also looking at Blade Style. That has Dan written all over it.

Maybe just a thing for KC.

yeah it is definitely something new thats for sure and its not like the other 2 companies haven't used Res C recently so there is, I suppose, no reason Dan couldn't use Micarta

Clearly we are missing something and Dan won't say any more until we crack this code.

"Led with the crescent and hung needed. The hunter should enjoy this blade as well as the person who needs to clear that which impedes their path."

Some sort of crescent halberd that can be hung on a pole for spear hunting or used to clear brush...

Maybe it's a scimitar!

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 04/15/15 11:25 PM

Or since its a knife, a karambit?

The karambit has the crescent shape, is a knife, and many have a hole opposite of the blade which could allow it to "hang when needed"

Did you see how long that moustache spined crescent blade is on legaleagle's post over on the Busse forum? Next to the B11 it looks almost 4 inches longer! I hope it is a teaser of what is coming, especially if it got a deregulator handle.

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 04/16/15 07:37 AM

Good for hunting AND brush clearing and can be hung in multiple ways..

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 04/16/15 07:40 AM

It's gonna be something new to the Yard not a variation on an old model. But with a tried and true handle.

What ever it is, come on and bring it Dan!

Off topic from the thread, but do you have any GB Axes now?

I have the GB Jaeger Axe, which is pretty similar to the Small forest Axe, and I am less that impressed. I always have a lot of denting and rolling to fix, after using it.

Back that bad boy up with a homemade wind turbine. It's a cheap (kind of) addition that will add to your battery charge at night. With the wind in Missouri, you should see pretty good performance.

Corrosion resistance terrible same as SR101,1095 etc.
Edge holding can be great if heat treated correctly, someone once described SR101 as 5160 on steroids......I'd say that's quite fair, most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference through normal use.

I've got several swords and a spear made of 5160. It does have a tendency to rust if not satin finished, you have to keep it protected and wipe off the fingerprints. It's pretty darn tough with a good HT, and I think it would be great for a big 'ole SYKCO chopper!

What kind of spears do you have? I'm a big fan of them.

Always thought it would be great to have a nice knife with a good method of attaching and disconnecting from a walking stick (chinese white wax) to make a spear.
I'm familiar with the Cold Steel bushcraft version, but am thinking something a little more "knife" like that could stand alone and look and perform decent without looking like it's a spearhead without the shaft.

Right now I only have one spear. It's a one off from Jeff Hedgecock long before he started Historic Enterprises. It's a small leaf style blade. I'll see if I can dig it out and get a picture.

A lot of the SCA folk use screw pins so you can take the spear head off quickly and easily.

Congratulations! Very nice puukko! I´m sure you´ll love it. I too got my self a new puukko. It´s factory made and not comparable to your puukko. I just wanted to get back to basics and to me the choise was obvious.

I´m still anxious to see the next knife from Dan!

How will this affect the Swamp? Or will they use SR7 or 5160 now? Also I have always hoped to get a Busse at lower cost but have been completely satisfied with the Yard and the Swamp so I never pulled the trigger, but...soon...

I would be more concerned that SR101 would not be used in the Scrap Yard knives any more and they would start making all of them for 5160 and 1095.

Part of the reason I jumped on the Regulator when I did is I always wanted SR101 and if they go up to only Busse (low end) Swamp Rat (high end) prices then it will be a little sad.

I hope not. Those steels are nice and all but I'm here for SR101.

This is why I dislike the old model. I check back here every couple of days but over time I check in less and less. Eventually missing the good stuff. I'd have 4 or 5 SYKCo's by now if I didn't have to babysit the forums.

This is well understood. I'm hopeful (is anyone listening) that the old model will be implemented using new tools. IE: you can still have limited releases, just notify people via email / twitter / facebook...whatever, BEFORE the release. It's simple.

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 05/01/15 08:06 PM

Shotgun is right. I like the old model, but having to babysit the forum every day is not cool. This coming from a loyal SYKCO customer, I have spent a lot of $$$ from this place (and Swamp). Dan created this thread on March 18. That was 44 days ago.

And now Busse is doing knives in SR101 and SKYCO using 5160. What alien Twilight Zone parallel universe have I beamed into?

Number Three REALLY has me concerned.

THIS IS HOW IT'S GONNA BE.

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 05/03/15 06:20 PM

Dan has used other steels before. I love his knives with 154cm.

Think it's premature to think of some monumental shift in which steels get used. Dan with one in 5160 doesn't mean adios to sr101 just yet.

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 05/03/15 06:23 PM

I wouldn't mind seeing some D2. I love the swamp rat D2 knives.

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 05/03/15 06:30 PM

You have to admit its odd that Busse uses Sr101, The Swamp releases a SR-77 and and Now Dan is planning a release with 5160. All around the same time.

That's as good a fodder for a conspiracy as any.
Posted By: evltcat

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 05/03/15 06:52 PM

Jerry did say they "greatly increased production capacity" so maybe the shift in steels is to reach a larger portion of the knife-knut community with a more affordable entry level product in 5160 and SR-77. Maybe also to allow more flexibility for the Busse high end in INFI and SR-101.

Posted By: SkunkHunter

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 05/03/15 07:56 PM

It is probably a ploy led by Al Sharpton. He told Jerry he wouldn't protest the Busse Compound if they would use a more diversified mix of steel and agreed to increase everyone's salary. On and also pledged to get the IRS to extend them a "Non Profit" status if they would just offer on a more limited basis thereby NOT flooding the market with products superior to what folks he normally deals with puts out.

Now this is just from putting together all the pieces from a multitude of sources. What they DON'T understand is that it just means more affordable knifes for us!
Posted By: Rat Finkenstein

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 05/03/15 08:38 PM

Busse made the Taliwacker of SR101 way back when. So it will just be a return to form for them to use the steel. Swamp Rat has used a variety of steel also, I think a mixed bag will be in our future as it has always been in the past.

I'm wondering what is going on at the compound. What with Jerry's announcement about expanded capacity I wonder if they got in a bunch of new equipment and are on a steep learning curve?
Posted By: Ray Settanta

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 05/07/15 11:31 AM

Maybe the "expanded capicity" is in China or Rwanda and that's why it takes so long for the knives to show up in the U.S.

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 05/07/15 05:56 PM

Dan's announcement was on 3/18 with the standard "two weeks" qualifier. It is now 5/7 and no further information. It would appear I log in here just about often enough to keep up with what's happening wink .

I did notice all of the knives in the Web Store are marked "SOLD OUT". Hopefully this means there will be new designs forthcoming. As you may remember, I wasn't overly fond of the "11" series (excluding the 411 and Spiderpig's 511MO No Choil...likely the best SYKCO I've tested).

Here's to hoping some practical and useful design will be available soon....you know....in two weeks.

Hey Adam - good to hear from you. I was thinking about you the other day while I was evaluating my gear. I'm in the process of a complete gear revamp, and part of this is a new Belt Order knife. Your 511MO greatly impressed me.

I did not like my 511 at all, the handle was just way to small for a full feature size knife. the Izulla 2 is something different, the mudder is the smallest handle for a knife with real use i.m.o.
Posted By: coyotebc

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 05/10/15 08:24 PM

That is my one complaint with Yard knives is their small handles.
I like proper sized handles even on small bladed knives
Some people prefer small handles on small blades because of looks or symmetry
I don't, I prefer a handle that fits my hands

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 05/10/15 10:36 PM

That is my only gripe with the 511. If it bothers me enough I can easily remove some material from the protrusion on the end of the handle in order to flatten it a bit. That would make it much more roomy. I've just been hesitant to do it.

Well, the Ed Brown was a big disappointment. It wouldn't reliably cycle. Ed Brown's solution was to sell me replacement magazines and recoil springs. With $100 worth of replacement parts in my $2,800 handgun (and it still not going one mag without 2 stoppages) I called it quits.

I'm totally out of the 1911 game now. No Les Baers (even though they always worked) or Ed Browns. I'm an all Glock and HK guy again (for serious work anyway).

My major compliant about Busse Combat is the oversized handles. I agree that the "basic" Scrapyard handle is too small. The mudder is securely textured, but the angle makes me feel cramped. The Reg handle was HUGE but comfortable.

The hint sounds like an Ax of some sort, the crescent is the curved blade, they work to clear paths of trees that impede your way, hang on a peg, or a belt.

Now release the beast!

Well, one could look at the three dots in front of Dan's "Lead time to offer...2 Weeks" as an indication there could be up to four digits in the number of weeks before the offering. On the bright side 19 years could be a really long wait, so I should have no problem completing my porch run by then. smile

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 05/23/15 01:24 AM

Well, I don't know about that. Since Dan's announcement of a new knife, Jerry has announced 5 Ganzaas, 3 new Busse Combat knives and two new Swamp Rats. And the Blade Show isn't even here yet. mad
Posted By: banana-clip

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 05/23/15 04:20 AM

Since I've been around, the ratio of new released Busse knives to new Scrapyard knives has always been much higher. Busse and Scrapyard knives are made in the exact same factory, just different handles and different steel. Busse is a business and if they can make a $500.00 knife or $110.00 I'm sure they will make more of the $500.00 knives since there is much more of a profit for them to make.

I've thought about the assegai spear for a long time.

OK I guess. Plugging along. You take the Storm out to the range as yet Randy? That gun looks like too much fun!

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 05/30/15 01:39 AM

RN, Skunk I got one of the MAA European Spears. It came dull as butter. I put and edge on it and worked on the tip.

I would not want to be on the business end of this thing. Very Strong tip and healthy blade. I can understand why spears have been a part of warfare for so long.

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 05/30/15 10:05 PM

Some day when I've slowed down a bit on knives, I'm going to FINALLY get a real English Bill and a German or Swiss Halberd.

Cool. I did Kung Fu for years and loved the spear. A serious combat weapon for sure.

I'm just going to swing back thru here in 2016 to check on page 903 of this thread....to find out there still aren't any knives for sale.

In the mean time I'm going to spend the money that would go here on ammo for my new LWRC M6IC...

I think we first started talking about the boar and assegai spears about 50 pages back or so....

I hope this announcement doesn't have a birthday before we hear something.

I just looked this up. Didn't realize Cold Steel made this spear. What made you choose this one over the assegai and boar that they offer? I'm thinking to pick up the boar but don't have any first hand experience with these.

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 06/01/15 03:21 PM

I have an assegai, and it is one deadly weapon! I touched up the edge so that it could be used as a knife if the shaft got broken; it would serve the purpose well. wink

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 06/01/15 03:45 PM

Warder. This is a fully enclosed spear. It isn't a one side spear.

It is actually a very solid spear. The price I paid was substantially cheaper than most places sell them for. About 40 to 50 dollars under MSRP.

I have been hearing about the MAA lineup even though Cold Steel doesn't really tout them much and I found out about them in a round about way.

They make several styles of spears in this line including a boar spear.

That's the main reason I went with this as opposed to the boar spear or assagi. It's a tank of a spear.

LOL...I couldn't see anything happening to the forum if there is no new Scrapyard knife offered at blade this year. The regulars are still going to post on here and I doubt Dan would drop this forum. Waiting forever for a scrapyard knife is pretty standard procedure around here.

Idk what kind it was, it had 2 buttons on the front left side of it, i guess it was a new innovative design. I only had it in my hands about a minute and I didn't even think to ask Jerry what kind it was (not frame or liner lock). No one got any pics of it that I know of, Jerry was pretty secretive of it and I only seen a few people get the chance to handle it.

It was a good time there even though I was pretty disappointed that scrapyard didn't have a new knife out. There was a few scrapyards on the table like a camo 911, tan 511 and a couple 311's. I didn't make it on Friday so who knows what was there on Friday.

They did have some new cerakote knives there. I got 4 total knives, the two Im keeping are a bronze cerakote FBM with CBT blade and a bronze cerakote SFNO which are pretty cool. Garth told me that the cerakote finish is much stronger than the combat grade finish.

I don't think anyone got a pick of it. From what I seen Jerry only showed it to a few people and they didn't have it long. I may have played with it for a minute flicking it open a few times. I seen another Busse folder Jerry had at Blade a few years ago and this model is different than that model.

I bought another rifle today. Between the two LWRC Individual Carbines and preban Sterling M6 ... That's $5650 that could have went into the Busse coffers, but went someplace with product to sell.

I know that sounds bitter, but seriously....if they're going to stop making SY & SR knives .... Post it here so their loyal customers can move on.

Otherwise, enough of the "two weeks" meme. It's tired. Be honest. I have a distinct feeling their well on their way to losing their fan base.

I think that Jerry Busse owns all three companies. His wife runs Swamp Rat and his brother runs Scrap Yard. This is speculation on my part, but I think that all the knives for Busse Combat, Swamp Rat, and Scrap Yard are made in the same shop by the same people. If there are more orders for Busse Combat knives, that takes away production from the other two companies. Because Scrap Yard is not a stand-alone company, lack of sales would not cause any problems. A limited number of Scrap Yard knives would work out because, although there would not be enough to sell on a store website, they can still be sold at a Ganzaa or at shows.

Ah now that makes sense. If all the production capacity is shared too, then it works if nothing comes out of the Yard for extended periods. Thanks Ray!

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 06/08/15 09:02 PM

Somebody else who knows the exact story may chime in. This is what I can deduct from conversation, Dan's time and efforts are currently with contracts...not sure if military or other. Garth runs Busse Custom Shop. Josh has been running Swamp Rat for a while. Beef is now in charge of Swamp Rat Custom shop. Dan is still the man in the Yard, but is busy with additional stuff. Pokey was recognized as one of the top grinders. This is just a guess here but Jennifer(Jerry' wife) is now in charge of a bunch of little ones.

Like I said, take it with a grain of Salt, but that is what I learned at blade...and most of it was passed on from others

Makes sense to me. But it WOULD be nice if Dan was to tell us "Sorry guys but I am up to my butt working on government contracts of one sort or another".

I don't think that anyone would really complain to much if we knew that Dan was "takin care of our Boys and Girls".

Just my 2 cents, which won't even buy you a piece Bazooka these days.

I agree. In fact, I believe when the Regulator was being sold the Dogs had to wait a couple months due to a Military order...no one complained. I think it could be more "Hollywood" oriented, that's where the money is

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 06/09/15 10:28 AM

I guess I could have stepped in and told you guys.

My Marine Corps public affairs shop placed a custom order for 1 million Scrap Yard staple removers. Apparently it has taken Dan's complete attention to fulfill this order as we need the staple removers ASAP. The inspector general is coming soon and we must remove some "questionable" gear purchases from our records. Tearing out a page may leave evidence, so we need specialized gear to make clean removals.

That said, sorry to make you all wait for a new knife.

Semper fi,

Soooo.......this is just not happening?

I think this is the first time one of these has gone from "I can't stop checking the forum" to "I have stopped checking the forum".

Usually I reach the point where I can't stand it and then the knife comes out.

I am sure I will be stoked when it comes out but I am burnt out on this waiting business.

Yep, this isn't all out of the norm.

Lots of excitement, pleasant chatter, doubts set in, anger, feeling it will never happen, desperation, doom and gloom...then a new knife is released and we all ask for what's next 2 days later and start the whole cycle again. Stages of bussekin addiction I think!

I say take the long view, enjoy knives you have, pick up another knife to kill time, relax and it will all work out well in the end!

For me it's more about having funds available when a new knife is released. Under the "New Old Model" the knives will only be available for a very short time and I don't want to miss out because I have no idea when they will be released and don't have money.

I know they're wont' be Busse release prices but, it's not like these are $10 Jarbenza's either... Just sayin... wink

I just don't get the angst guys, I don't, how many here NEED another knife (lets remove want from the picture)?? I do think a messgae from Dan would go a long way to helping calm things but I just don't understand getting all wound up about it. No one has any $$s in the game and the reality is that once a new blade is announced half the folks here will not like it in the configuration offered, too thick, too thin, too long, too short, I want it in hot pink but not before I get a lime green one. We had a situation where knives were offered in a "shop environment" and the relaity is that has probably not worked for Busse. If it had, the status quo would have remained, and the reality is that if it is not sustainable for the company it is not going to continue.

It's Marketing 101 Andy. Managing customer expectations... When you set customers' expectations about a product, then fail to deliver (or give status updates), they get upset, and sometimes completely irrationally upset!

And yes, you're right, I don't need this new knife from the Yard, but I do WANT to know what it is and when it will be available! wink

I don't have any angst or upset at all. If I need a blade and there is none here, my money goes elsewhere. I am sure I will buy more SY knives in the future. I still just don't understand the business model. Definitely a big fan, and will buy more.

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 06/20/15 04:05 PM

I think the problem is that the whole profile created by the Busse Knife Company groups is that the customers are "family and friends". They encourage a sense of group, loyalty, and camaraderie that goes far beyond the rationality of a purchase, and again borders on associating the companies with your personal life (as friend / family).

In that sense it is very much so understandable the frustration of many people as they feel "betrayed". It's not exactly fair to ask people to be your best friend part of the time and then treat you as just another company with who you do business when convenient. I mean, in reality, the lynch pin of the company's success is people purchasing not out of need, but out of want.

Heck, if the customers did that Busse would in no way, shape or form be as successful as it is today.

What bothers me is the "two weeks". I get it, its a joke. I build custom live edge tables. I don't tell people 2 weeks, I tell them I will have it ready when it meets my expectations and there requirements. If there was a hint months ago then there is a idea or prototype. What is the harm in letting us know what it is so we can decide if we want it or if we are waiting until the next release. Especially in my situation, I live about 4.5 hours drive from the yard, but since there is a border in the way I pay $50usd for shipping. So I have to factor that with the exchange rate into my purchase. I for one would like a heads up about putting some extra cash aside. I send build photos to buyers to let them know how things are going. It helps with the wait. But hey I am just a polite Canadian...

The timing between unveiling a product and making it available is a big deal. Spyderco used to show prototypes at many different stages, but recently they've stopped showing products that aren't in the final pre-production phase because waiting a year or more between announcing a product and releasing it takes a lot of wind out of the sales.
People get much, much more excited for something when it's fresh in their mind, and not just fresh off the shelf.
The Busse sales strategy hinges almost solely on word of mouth, when they have something to sell they want everyone and their dog to be talking about it. Mindshare at that specific point in time is critical.

A run of knives made for a Military Contract that have knives left over after making enough to fill the contract. Busse usually offers them to us at a nice discount.

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 06/25/15 11:51 PM

Thinking about how great the 13-11 is, maybe that should be the platform for the Magnum Regulator.
My initial thought for a large Regulator was just a 12" .33" thick spike, basically ignoring practicality, but the 13-11 is a proven piece and could fill multiple roles with a little tweaking.

What if they just put the Regulator handle and a clip point on the 13-11?

If we're gonna dream... how about a DHT 1311 with the regulator handle set at an angle just slightly steeper than the current handle hanging off of the back of a wider blade so as to make the blank cutout all fit on one straight piece. It doesn't even need to be longer (though an inch or two would be fine), the weight increase of wider (but not thicker) stock and larger tang for the reg handle should make for one heck of a chopper!

I don't want to get cut for saying this but that ganza thing.. I just dunno that I want to sit by my computer and mash F5 so maybe I can get a chance to hopefully buy a knife. I'm looking for a good, tough tool, not a wall ornament.

I realize this has pretty much nothing to do with what this thread is about but...

Grog, I am sure you already have, but you can go here:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/804-Busse-Swamprat-Scrapyard-Knives-For-Sale

and find all sorts of good NON Wall hangers. (I don't care for wall hangers either). My blades may not all get used, but they have got to be able of being used, ie user grade.

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 07/08/15 08:54 AM

Yep, I cruise that just about every day, I appreciate it though. I think I was spoiled for choice, I didn't start looking at the Yard until the store was fully stocked so I didn't worry much about checking for updates and whatnot so often.

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 07/08/15 08:58 AM

Ya know.. maybe the next model is a lightsaber with Res C? Think about it, as cool as I thought the lightsabers were they couldn't really be that comfortable to use with all the metal and doodads on the handle. Carving a spoon with one of those would be a nightmare.

Put that lightsaber on some mudder grips though and I'd trim my toenails with that!

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 07/08/15 08:58 AM

I have been looking for an SS4 for like forever. I have found a few, but it was always at a low time in the monetary department (we only get paid once a month). I still want one, but not as badly as I once did.
Posted By: Grog

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 07/08/15 09:11 AM

That SS4 looks like it'd be extremely useful. The choil could go away entirely (just my preference) and the edge could run right back to the handle.. Yeah, that'd be nice!
Posted By: SkunkHunter

Re: Next Offering Hint, Under The New Old Model - 07/08/15 09:18 AM

That is not my point. What I meant is that someone from ANOTHER forum received a communication from SYKCO and we do not even get THAT! All we get is silence. I can understand a lack of product because of other pressing business, illness, family problems, an Act of God or whatever. But we still have not had any official word from the company pertaining to the current situation. This is what is not palatable and is more galling than the lack of product.

I understand your frustration, but it looks like mastiffhound initiated the contact with a general email question about ordering a knife and got a pretty boiler plate response from Renee, so it doesn't look like an official communication went out on the other forum.
