Sip & Talk....Lets get this party started

I have a "Not Your Fathers Root Beer" in hand and I'm almost juiced so to speak. For newer Dogs to the Sip & Talk it is really more of a Sip and Type/write. Any questions is allowed as long as it is polite. I will answer if I can. We do not care about spelling and or grammer since the sipping can effect that ...at least in my case.

We will start off talking about the best summer vacation we ever had.

I'll start, My Mom and Dad used to take us to the Smokey Mountains, some times twice a year. The best and most amzing time is when Jerry and were 16 and 18 or close to that. We were having breakfast at the Elkmont camping and picnic area. Jerry spotted a black bear and took off running after it and I took off running after him. We ran 300 yards and the bear jumped off a 20 foot cliff and went under water in a mountain stream. He then surfaced and went up the other side that had to be almost vertical and he ran up that mountain faster than he did on flat ground. After Jerry and I looked on in amazement I asked Jerry what he was going to do if he caught that bear...He replied that he hadn't thought that far. We still laugh about it to this day

Probably my best vacation was when my folks took us to the Ozarks. We stayed in a cabin near the lake for swimming and fishing, but made several side trips. The diamond mine in Arkansas, Silver Do9llar City, a trip to Texarkana to visit my my Mom's Grandfather, etc.

I guess it planted the seed for my moving to the Ozarks many years later!

The best Summer I ever had was taking a trip with my family to Santa Cruz. It was a cheap trip but it was fun. Summer of 1977 and hippies all over the place...our Mom warned us to stay close to her

That's an awesome story, I'm really sorry to say it but I can't even remember anything that really stands out to me as far as summer vacations go.

My long term memory is absolutely terrible, I guess having a concussion not too long ago doesn't help with that, LOL.

This reminds me of the best trout fishing experience I had ever had.

I was about 25 years old and my Dad and I had been fishing since daybreak on a particularly cold April morning. We had each caught one shy of our limit and we're planning on having a great fish dinner that night.

We wandered into a narrow part of the stream about 8 feet wide and only 3 feet deep. Directly in front of us was a beautiful brook trout. The water was crystal clear and you could make out the fire orange of his belly and fins.

We were only 6 feet in front of him but because of our positioning, we were in his blind spot.

We threw minnow after minnow at him and he would strip the bait every single time. It was miraculous to watch that we haven't hooked him.

My Dad and I laughed and laughed after we fed him about a dozen minnows. We decided he has earned every bite and left him alone to return home.

When I think of what heaven would be like, I always remember that moment and how perfect that day was.

I lived up there in Novi and was a sales rep in Detroit...I can survive or how ever that song goes

Hiking down in the smokies is one of my favorite things to do with my dad.
We try to go once a year. We went to the U.P. Of MI last weekend.

I took a few days last weekend and went to the Smokeys with Patti and my 2 youngest (18 & 20). Theresa had to work so she missed out. The funniest part was listening to Mary and Mike in the back of the car. They laughed and giggled like when they were little...wow the memories were so cool

I made a few float with some sort of chocolate red wine and vanilla ice cream recently. Very surprising delicious!

that rootbeer is hard to find in southern Ohio.

Its brewed in Chicago and every place in Toledo tends to be sold out

I have literally never seen it in Southern Michigan anywhere and I would have if they sold it here, LOL.

Homemade lemonade here made with fresh lemon and brown sugar. Put it in the freezer until the ice forms on the inside of the glass. Then add Grey Goose... And all is well in the world.

The rootbeer float suggestion has to be good for a shop credit!!! haha

Every "booze and Dessert" combo I have every made usually ended up with me "donating" back to the earth rather quickly...and that doesn't include flavored schnapps

Real root beer is in the glass bottles.

I would have expected the same not having had one until trying the wine float, but I was amazed that it actually went down pretty smooth and didn't leave me sick oddly enough. Try it….

Worth every hour in the hunt. 4 weeks ago I was working outside, it got hotter than heck and I slugged down three of them since they were ice cold...I then took the best nap in a long time on a Sunday afternoon

My best summer vacation was with my grandfather in the deep South when I was 12. We spent the months working on the huge farm, eating watermelon from the patch and shooting cans down in the Gulley.

One time my cousin decided to ride a bull and his brother hit its rump with a switch. We chased that bull across a bean field with my cousin on his back. The bull headed for the pond, bucked and turned. My cousin was pitched about 15 feet into that pond with plenty of hang time.

Can I preorder about a dozen of them right now, Dan???

58-60 Rc provides the best edge. The heat treatment provides amazing results where others are unable to achieve. BY the way the protocol involves unstated amounts of pixy dust and those pixy aren't talking

That was the summer that I fell of the back of the pick up coming back from town, too. Luckily, I was a fan of "Manix" and we were going pretty slow. My grandad was driving but my cousins didn't tell him that I fell off. I ran a good half mile before he spotted me in the mirror.

He said that he didn't think that city boys could run that fast.

Years ago my Dad would take the family for a Sunday drive, and as a treat we would go to an A&W drive-up and get root beer floats for all of us.

When I was in high school i worked in a restaurant, the Holiday Inn. In the summer my boss would special order Sarsaparilla (root beer), he was have the waitress push selling that to the customers. We would also put a few six packs in the walk in freezer till it got super ice cold and when our boss would leave in the evening we would drink it and make root beer floats. It would sell for around $2.00 a bottle back then (late 80s). If he only knew he would be pissed off, because we would drink more root beer than they sold.

Now THAT'S a cold one!

The best float, gentlemen, Is not root beer but the elusive Vernors float. Fresh from the counter on the corner of Woodward an Grand Blvd in Detroit, Michigan. They tasted so good that they would make you......... (fill in the blank.)

How about another shop credit and a tuff question at that... When we were kids my Mom and Dad stopped at a small picnic area just past Elkmount in the Smokeys right on a mountain stream. Jerry and I used to wade that stream looking for stones that looked like marble. In later years it was ripped out and allowed to over grow...it is now back with a small parking lot but no picnic area. If you can come up with the original name of this spot it is worth a $100 shop credit. One winner and the first response. If no one gets it I come up with another question.

There was a Woolworth store on Woodward and Grand Blvd that I visited when I was just a wee lad. My mom would take me there.

Years later, I started my career working in the General Motors head quarters on the next block. I would sometimes stroll down that way and give change to the blind Street guitar player that sat near the front.

One fine summer day, a particularly shapely woman turned out from an office building right in front of me and headed to the Woolworth store. As we approached the front door, the woman stoped and gracefully bent down to give the blind man some change.

The blind man immediately stopped playing the guitar, turned his head toward the woman and lifted his dark sunglasses.

I stood there and the guy turned his head back toward me, winked at me and said, "Mm mm."

I never gave that guy any change after that.

A good friend of mine from college owns the best darn ice cream shop I've ever been to. It's called The Franklin Fountain, located in Philly.

Everything there is handmade. He even started making his own candy for his shop a few years back.

His floats are just amazing. Google his shop and check out his creations if the mood strikes

Well it is now a new day, and I have read all 13 pages of the S&T. Great stuff. Sure wish I could have chimed in, but someone has to make the Donuts, and that means sleeping while others are awake. Such is my life, At least for another 3 1/2 years!

Vacation? I've been to the Smoky Mountains now 3 times total and the Rockies about the same. Which ones I like best? It's kinda a toss up, the Rockies are of course more Majestic, but the Smoky Mts are probably my fav, Specially since the last two times I've seen them was with Patty.

One year when I was a wee lad of about 10 or 11 We were visiting Yellowstone Park. Now this mind you, was when you could virtually drive up to Old Faithful (less than 100 yards).

Ok, so we had camped out in one of the many campgrounds and It just so happened that there was a bear across the road. Well Dad grabbed the ever popular Bell and Howell 8mm movie camera and begin to film said bear after crossing the road to the "Bear side" . He was of course zoomed in to get the "Best" shots of the bear and all of a sudden noticed that the bear appeared VERY close. When he lowered the camera from his eye the bear was about 10 feet away. He of course got quite concerned and looked around for me as I had been standing beside him.

Well I, being the observant child that I was, had seen the bear coming toward us and whispered to Dad (so as not to startle the bear) that the bear was headed toward us had quietly (once again so as to not startle the bear) ran to the other side of the road and was observing the whole situation from about 50 or 60 feet away.

Dad, at the time, apparently not appearing to appetizing (he was about 5ft 9in tall and weighing about 135 pounds)safely made it to MY side of the road without incident after dodging several cars that were SLOWLY going by.

Dad then went on to explain to me the importance of telling him LOUDLY that a bear was about to eat him.

Oh and Did I say that we had a snowball fight that year IN JULY!

It's a shame we have to grow up.

Great story. You tried to tell him but those old super 8 cameras are pretty loud while in use.

We had a similar encounter with bears and Dad with a camera in the Smokies when I was quite young. I suspect it happens more often than one would think.

... And not many may live to tell the story. I recently read about people taking photos at Yosemite next to the bison. After that bull story that I posted, I can guarantee that I have a great respect for anything big that has horns - especially on four big tires.

I got car sick driving up to Cades Cove. That windy road is horrible if your a passenger and I never get car sick, but I sure did driving up that road.

We loved the windy twisty road from Gatlinburg to Cades Cove, and Patty DOES get car sick. Strangely enough though she didn't get sick one single time.

We have never been to Cades Cove, but some of the roads here in Missouri are enough to make you sick!

Yeah, I felt very nauseous. If I ever go up to Cades Cove again I'm going to take some dramamine.

banana-clip, go out wears valley road through townsend and then turn back to cades cove. The road isn't quite as bad that way.
