Chop Off!! Taking out the Trash...

Chop Off!! Taking out the Trash... - 12/20/15 08:55 PM

Wanted to see what this is capable of...'cause it feels like a beast! The ASH design always reminded me of a cleaver for some reason...let's see if it's chops like one!

I sold my Camp Tramp after I got the awesome sheath for the Battle Rat- I know it's not a good matchup, but something to do!

Look at the tip on the TRASH, what a monster!

First round...11 for the BR.

[Linked Image from i432.photobucket.com]

10 for the Trash?! Say what??!!

[Linked Image from i432.photobucket.com]

Did a bunch more and the BR was ahead almost every time..but not by a lot...usually a few more chops were needed by the Trash.

Played with it for a couple minutes with some finer work. There's a lot of steel behind the edge and it was harder for me to be effective with it. Easily remedied by thinning the edge though...

I mentioned the tip before...wowza- what strength!

[Linked Image from i432.photobucket.com]

The Trash is punching well above it's weight class IMHO. Look at this size difference...

Dan and the Yard for the win!

A few thoughts...I swear the handle is bigger than the BR...and I like it! Wish I had a scale to weigh them both, b/c I may be crazy, but the Trash seems to weigh as much as the BR in hand. Could be the balance being so different, but that's what it feels like to me. Seems like a great blade capable of doing a lot of different tasks. When I get my Survive 7/7 I'll compare that, the Trash and my Esee 6.

Happy Holidays Yard! grin

Great review RN!

My TRASH comes in just under 14oz's. My TRASH was sharpened by Denny and so far I have not had to do anything to it to make it perform the way I want. The handles do feel big and comfy, but I don't have an old Battle Rat to compare it to.

My TRASH is a Keeper! It will be interesting to see how it compares to the 7/7!

Oh and like Andy has stated I would not feel underknifed if it was my one and only

Absolutely, I hope that Renee/Dan can pass along to Denny what a bloody good just he did on so many of the TRASH1s. I imagine sharpening blade after blade wears thin quickly but my Denny sharpened blades out of this lot have been impressive !!!

Denny did mine too and it's one of the sharpest knives I've received from the Yard or Swamp.

A little something Tom.

Was feeling grumpy...a peaceful walk in the woods...smashing old wood as hard as possible- was nice! :-)

Great review and pics thanks for knocking the new off of her for those of us who haven't been able to yet.

Awesome stuff!!! I haven't had a chance to give my Trash a belting yet. Karen has claimed it as a kitchen knife! She loves it!

Mine has bitten me while I was admiring the BG ASH... Was kinda funny, I was looking at BG and saw movement with the corner of my eye... didn't feel a thing!
One more thumb up for Denny's sharpening skills.

Going to be an attention hog and bump my own thread! wink

I've had it out a couple more times and wanted to add some more thoughts and pics.

This knife is just a heavy duty work horse. I don't recall my Camp Tramp feeling like such a beast. I haven't bought a midsized knife from the Yard in awhile and am now sure the handle is bigger than my Battle Rat. I love it! Really fills the hand nicely. Even though I love choils...there is something about this knife that makes me want to lose it. For a bit, I thought the sweet spot was just in front of it, but I don't think so now. That extra inch or so of blade would be welcome IMHO.

Glamor shot with it's little cousin- the venerable Howling Rat.

The Trash is an impressive chopper for it's size. Found a newly fallen tree that was still green an it's just wrecked it. Fine control is easier for me now...whittling a couple stakes...

[Linked Image from i432.photobucket.com]

Cross batoning is no problem..

[Linked Image from i432.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i432.photobucket.com]

Same with regular batoning...the Trash just laughs at getting beat on..

Seems to me a great BOB addition, knife for in the vehicle or get home bag. It doesn't take up much room but is capable of big work. Have a Azwelke sheath ordered so it start getting carried- hope it comes soon!

Just a few further thoughts folks...

Thanks for the review/comparison.

I need to get out and beat some trash. One showed up with coating wear from factory sharpening that makes it look already used, so... that is the one to start with!

I agree! an Elf Choil would be good enough.

If the choil bothers you so much, just ask tinfoil hat timmy (on BF) to reprofile it for you, that should get the edge back about level with choil...

Re: Chop Off!! Taking out the Trash... - 01/17/16 09:38 AM

So far I like my Trash1, but I still wish it was only .187 thick.

Re: Chop Off!! Taking out the Trash... - 01/17/16 04:35 PM

That would be nice too....maybe a future offering?

Re: Chop Off!! Taking out the Trash... - 01/17/16 06:54 PM

I would unfortunately probably have to pass unless someone wanted a BS or a VERY slightly used Trash1. I will probably keep my ASH1 even though that thing would work as a boat anchor!

Re: Chop Off!! Taking out the Trash... - 01/17/16 07:42 PM

Now don't get me wrong, the ASH1 feels nice in the hand and actually I think balances rather nicely, but IT IS HEAVY!

I like my Trash 1's more than I thought I would! smile It is a pretty sweet small knife.

It's growing on my but still wish it was thinner.

Just revived my TRASH from a secondary purchase. I agree about the choil....it seems "stretched out" on this knife.

Both of mine were sharpened by Denny, but one has a VERY high and uneven grind:
