EDC knives - 05/10/07 08:21 PM

On the search for the perfect EDC fixed. Been at it since 1971 and maybe a street scrapper 4, a rat hunter or a mean street could be the holy trinity of EDC. Hope so, I've been lookin a long time. Any comments from those blessed ones who aready have one or even more of these on how they carry and conceal?

Welcome Hatch, while I like the SS4, the handle is a bit large for EDC, the mean street thinner, and shorter. I had an IWC sheath for my MS and it was perfectly comfortable. The SS4 has a more rounded belly and I find it is a better small camp/utility blade.

Welcome to the yard Hatch. I have to agree with GF, the SS4 is a little big and bulcky for me to EDC I like to carry a fixed blade EDC in my front pocket and the SS4 just don't fit. It is a great knife though, just can't EDC it on my daily routine.

I liked Vance's idea of a SYKCO Game Warden style and size knife called the Dog Catcher, I'd be all over that!!

Hi, Hatch! Welcome to the yard!

I don't have a MS ( ), but I've been EDC'ing my SS4 at work since I got it about 4 months ago. I wear khaki slacks and carry it concealed in my right front pocket. Here are a couple of pics of it and the kydex sheath I made for it.

The knife stands straight up and the sheath makes it tilt toward the front so it doesn't peek out. Luckily, the pockets are just deep enough. The pants are also pleated, which helps conceal it, and the knife itself is very light for it's size.

I can't vote on those choices, because I do not yet have a SS4. Usually I carry a folder for EDC, but sometimes I carry my Swamp Rat HRLM. I just love that little knife. On occasion, I have carried the Dumpster Mutt.

+1

i carry a small custom "Boartooth" made by Gossman knives for my fixed blade EDC

Folders are my normal method but I have been carrying it ina pocket sheath for a couple weeks and love it!

Re: EDC knives - 05/10/07 10:10 PM

The size of the mudder handle makes the SS4 both longer and wider than the DM. I have my sheath ideas sketched out, and used my Ranger TFI (nearly the same size as the DM - Micarta slabs make it wider as well)as a test for sizing. It should come out cool.

I have some sheaths on order for my SS4 and DM so I am going to try EDCing them when they get here.

Re: EDC knives - 05/10/07 11:36 PM

Either would be good, the SS4 has a very comfy handle but the Busse Combat would be a lot stronger in extreme use! (Not to say the SS4 is a wimp!)

When I get my SS4, I want one. I wear hiking pants or shorts. They have deep pockets. I could carry it in my pocket with that sheath.

yup

and the one I came up with, combined with that one is going to be in my sheath rotation for smaller knives

Re: EDC knives - 05/11/07 02:40 AM

I've been carrying my bm 710, but for a fixed, I do like the DM for an edc, I like the size, the things it can do, maybe it's a little more weight than I'd like for an edc but I know I can trust it.

Re: EDC knives - 05/11/07 07:22 AM

I carry two fixed blades (plus a Leatherman Ti Charge) every day. One is my 3/16” Shaker, and the other is either my HRLM, SS4, or DM. Mostly I’ve been carrying the HRLM since I got my nice Leatherman sheath from Vance. On Sunday morning when I go to church, I take it off my belt and put the SS4 in my pocket instead. I don’t wanna freak out anyone at church carrying a sheath knife. So, I carry 2 fixed blades every day (even to Sunday morning church) cause you never know when you might need ‘em.

Re: EDC knives - 05/11/07 09:04 PM

Thanks to one and all for the warm welcome and the sage advice. I appreciate it. Doing more research on the issue I find I like the blade form on the scrap 4 and the rat hunter better than the mean street and I def want INFI. I got a street scrap off e-bay and Im gonna commit (gasp) knife desecration. Ill try first to cut some off the tang and if that does'nt work Ill remove the handle and replace it with a (spidy mean streets perrin design) in carbon fiber at about 4" in the handle. Thanks to everyone and may you find your perfect EDC.

I still carry my Cold Steel X-2 Voyager, small Schrade, and small Case folders. Lately when I go out in the fields I have been carrying my YardGuard on my pistol belt.

A manly choice! I like those Voyagers, too. The X-2 is the big six incher, right? What a beast.

Re: EDC knives - 05/13/07 06:24 PM

Right on Vic! My son was surprised at just how fast I can pull the X-2 and open the blade, faster than he with his Balisong butterfly.

Once when I stopped for gas in Kansas City, a BIG guy was making a bee-line towards me while I was filling my tank. The look of ill-intent was on his face, so I pulled my X-2 about an inch out of my pocket and returned the same look. He immediately changed his direction of travel! I really like my X-2!! Tom

Welcome to the Yard Hatch, I EDC my SS4 in a BuyBrown kydex sheath with tecloc, horizontal style on my week side opposite of my handgun for the last few months & it works great this way!
& I also carry a couple other folders like Strider folders & a spyderco folder for utility.
