INFI Chef - Pheasant Challenge - 05/16/08 09:26 AM

In preparation for a 4 day/3 night camping & fishing trip down Oregon's Deschutes River next week, I thought I'd test out the SAR5 in a kitchen setting. I decided to whip up a batch of pheasant chili to feed 4 guys.

Let's start with the main ingredient - a couple birds remaining from a stellar season in the field:

The SAR5 performed very well taking the meat off the birds and cubing. Precision was great, tendons and joints were effortless. The factory sharpening wasn't quite as good up toward the tip, but that's nothing a bit of quick attention won't fix.

Next came the green pepper, onion, and garlic:

The onion was a challenge due to the blade's thickness. Not as fine a chop as I'd like, but this is camp food so coarse chop it was!

Knifeless shot of the intermediate result. The combination of steam and no flash made the shot a little blurry:

The final result. Notice a couple key ingredients required for preparation... 4 ounces for the pot & 20 ounces for 'creativity'. Don't forget the Worcestershire sauce:

Of course I had to sample it along the way. Tasted great as usual - virtually fat free. The wife was extraordinarily upset that I didn't set aside any for her. Pheasant chili is right up there with my special dove preparation in her book of favorite game meals.

Great looking chili, an awesome meal for camping and fishing. Chili is one of my favorites. Unfortunately I haven't had any real home made chili, just canned stuff from the grocery store and $1 chili from Wendy's (I actually live near the one where that lady "found" a finger in her chili, if anybody recalls the story).

Sounds good. Next time you do a beef chili, try adding A-1 to the mix as well. Does not go as nicely with the birds. I tried it with turkey with mixed results. Nice INFI by the way. It is a shame the next offering (black and tan) is not in INFI.

That chili looks fantastic. I am very jealous of your upcoming trip down the Deschutes. The Deschutes is one of my favorite rivers to float. A buddy with a drift boat and I used to do a trip or two a year. The Deschutes red side trout are incredible fun and the salmon fly hatch is downright insane. I'm not a particularly squeemish person but those big ole salmon flies give me the heebie jeebies when they fall down my shirt. What amazing fishing during the hatch though.

I caught my all time largest steelhead on a fly on the Deschutes...definitely a day to be remembered. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />
