got around to reprofiling and sharpening my DM

got around to reprofiling and sharpening my DM - 07/14/08 04:07 AM

I got this DM about a year ago to take on a deployment due to it's heft, I was pretty sure I would be able to pry alot of stuff open with this baby, and did I ever! Ammo crates, car doors, hajji hut doors etc.
I was very pleased with this knife throughout my time there.

However, the edge on mine was about like a factory hatchet, very thick, and very coarse.
So, I spent a couple hours today thinning and sharpening the edge on this bad boy.
Now, keep in mind that this is my first attempt at a reprofile with convex edge. First try. And I am happy

sorry for the random post, but I was so happy with my results, I have never been able to sharpen a knife this well before.
I'm a convex convert

Awesome DM edge! My DMCG is one of my favorite knives. And I thinned and convexed the edge on mine as well.

Glad to hear you put it to work. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

nice work, Its always good to see people using a DM as it was intended. What method did you use to reprofile it?

Re: got around to re profilin and sharpening my DM - 07/14/08 06:22 AM

I am stoked about reprofiling my Hairycarry as well.
I think most knives need to have their edges reprofiled and Scrapyards are no different. It simply is to expensive to have a guy go over each edge for long enough to make them perfect. I have noticed the edges on Rats and Dogs were really straight and even but quite obtuse and rough like they were done with a 40 or 60 grit belt.

Those were great photos. Any time I try to get close they get blurry.

Welcome to the Yard.

+1!

Let us know how you reprofiled the edge because it looks great.

The DMCG takes an awesome convex edge, check out Tiny's DMCG reprofiled by Ban (mine is in the background).

WOW!!! Ban does some incredible work!!! I've got a AD in black and tigethide waiting to get to him. . .
Thanks for the welcome guys, I flaked and didn't put an intro in, I have been looking here and posting at Swamp Rat and bladeforums for awhile now, so sorry for the flake.

All I did was got a large paint stirrer from walmart, I actually took and old beer cozy and glued it on top, used general purpose wet or dry paper, 600 grit, spent a long time here shaping the edge, getting rid of the heel and making it a true convex, I DEFINATELY recomend the sharpie method it helped me out alot.
Next up was 800 grit, on to 1000 and then 2000, after that it was my knivesshipfree.com leather strop with grey and green BRKT compounds.
I forget to mention that it took a large strip of hair off my arm too!!!

and for anybody wanting to get themselves into sharpening or reprofiling, I didn't buy any books, no expensive equipment, total cost of what I used was about 40$ and I spent a good while reading posts and how to tips on this and other forums, look around and ask, there is a ton of information here.
thanks again for the kind words

Welcome to the yard, grunt. Nice job on that DM. The DM was designed as a compact combat/utility knife. Glad to see some of our soldiers are using them. Now you truly do have a sharpened prybar!

thanks again guys! After this I am regretting selling my SS4!!!!!

Re: got around to re profilin and sharpening my DM - 07/14/08 08:54 PM

NOOOOOO! man you should of kept the SS4 that was one sweet chunk of INFI. Im sure you had your reasons tho.

Re: got around to re profilin and sharpening my DM - 07/15/08 02:09 AM

I can understand selling the SS4 even though I would never sell mine. Once a knife gets to a certain point over what you paid in value it gets awfully hard not to see a pile of 20$ bills instead of a knife. I sell all the knives I don't absolutely love. Right now I have
DFLE
SS4
YKCG
Muppy
SH-E
HairyCarry
Swarden
SAR5
The only ones I would never sell are the DFLE and SS4 with the HC looking very likely to become a keeper. The YKCG is going for sure and the rest are probably going unless I fall in love with one. I may keep the Swarden as well simply because it is such a handy little knife with the neck sheath.
