body on side of the road

body on side of the road - 08/27/08 01:32 PM

so i get out of work a little after 3:00AM.

i'm about to pull into my street in a suburban housing development but their is something on the radio i want to hear...{bubba the love sponge show}...so i decide to drive for a minuet to hear the rest of it.

so on i go past my street.after that it turns into country roads.i'm coming to the end of a country road where it ends and makes a "T" with another road where i plan to swing the car around and head home.

while coming to the end of the road i notice a bicycle on the side of the road at the corner and subconsciously think it must be garbage and that is why its at the road side in someones front yard.the bike is on my right hand, passenger side.

i turn the car around at the intersection and now the bike is on my side so i can see it better.my heart drops as i see a human body lying next to the bike in the grass.

i drive up 40 yards and get out of my car remembering i have my cell phone in my trunk.i call 911 and tell them the situation and where i am.they ask me if the individual is breathing so i walk over to him and i really cant see any breathing movements.

mind you it is in the 40's and the grass this kid is lying in is wet.at this point i dont know if he's been hit by a car, intoxicated or if it some type of medical condition.

while i'm waiting for rescue i do see him move so now i know he's alive.a few minuets later he wakes up,looks up at me in my car and seems really confused.

i ask him if he's alright and he say "I'M FREEZING TO DEATH".i ask him if he's been drinking and his answer is "I'M F%$#*&@ TRASHED DUDE".i giggled and said to him that i was worried about him and didnt know what had happened to him so i called 911.

he tells me "thanks",hops on his bike and takes off but just then 2 cops,1 ambulance and 3 volunteer firemen come around the corner.

i took off, went home and had a few of my own, except i plan on sleeping in my own bed tonight as opposed to the side of bear springs rd......lol.the [censored] kids head was lying in the road on the white line.it looked like somebody put him out front for the trash pick up.

i saw him talking with the cops and was obviously O.K. but could've easily fallen to hypothermia had he been out their much longer, although i have no idea how long he had been their.he was only wearing a t-shirt and jeans and had to be very wet due the condensation on the grass.

one of my co-worker's brother died this last winter.he was walking home drunk from a bar, took a shortcut where he had to walk over a wooden plank that made a make-shift bridge across a ditch with a couple feet of ice water in it.he fell off the plank into the ice water, was knocked unconscious and died of hypothermia

i thought for a few moments their tonight i was looking at a dead body.something startling about seeing a body lying on the side of the road at 3:30AM.

Live bodies are less unnerving than dead bodies.

At least under most circumstances.

You may have saved his life, northern1. Good for you for being a good Samaritan.

N1 - I applaud your concern for a fellow human being, and your attempt to help. However, in the future you might consider the possibility of a "staged" accident, making you vulnerable to robbery, theft, or worse. A call from the safety of your car, along with your pistol at hand would be a little safer bet for you. Re: body on side of the road - 08/27/08 05:36 PM

northern1, you realize what you've done?

you could have just saved the life of an anti knife, anti gun, anti freedom rally leader who'll rise to power through cunning political tactics and ruin our lives with the propaganda he feeds to the american (and i use that term loosely) sheepulation (and i use that term strictly) who grow in number and sheepishness by the day, exponentially!!! more run on sentences!!!

but really, good man.

Which is kind of weird if you really start to think about it. Dead bodies can be complicated, but they're just a fact. A pile of protein, fat, calcium, water, etc. They just sit there providing food to all the recyclers of the chain. It's the live bodies that you gotta watch out for, because they re the ones who do irrational, inconvenient, possibly dangerous things. Similar to the way in which a volcano is more exciting than a hill.

Good looking out man. Not many people would have stopped and that really reveals a lot about who you are. thanks for being that guy.

Re: body on side of the road - 08/28/08 02:07 AM

Thank god he was on the side of the road and not in the middle of it. That would have been something to explain to the police. Personally I would have pulled up in the driveway and finished listening to the radio there. Good job.

i've lived enough of my life in those neighborhoods and while it can happen anywhere this isnt that type of area.

while unfortunate,i've seen it all...{not to sound like a tough guy}...and think i'm pretty street smart.

i have had a gun to me once in a home invasion.it wasnt a robbery thing, more like a bad blood thing and while no one got shot my friend did get stabbed numerous times.

my friend had someone put a revolver to his head at the pay phone across the street from my house and took his wallet.

then their was the drive by at kentucky fried chicken but thats for another day.

needless to say i am naturally very cautious.i'm really good with vibes and can tell when things arent right.

Northern1,
A good friend and work associate lost his 19 year son when he got drunk at college (frat party) fell asleep under a tree and died of hypothermia (around 40 def F. w/ rain). The loss eventually contributed to splitting the family. To bad there wasn't someone like you there to save him. Some people might not have wanted to get involved. Good work.

Good Samaritan deeds are awesome nice to see you will stop for someone in need.
The -50 winters here mean you can freeze to death if the bus is a bit late much less if you pass out so every spring thaw we find a few.

Nice work northern1

wow thats something and i'm sorry to hear that.

thats also the same conditions here except no rain although i know he was wet.the ground was frosted.

and dont get me wrong,i was pretty spooked out.i didnt try to wake him up because if he was alive i figured he was on something and i didnt know how he would react to a stranger standing over him.

i was also spooked at the thought of staring at a dead body before i knew if he was alive or not.

i've only seen one dead body and didnt even know thats what i was looking at until the cops came and knocked on my door and asked me if i had heard anything.
17 yrs old with a single stab wound to the chest.

at first i thought this kid was the victim of a hit and run.

i wonder what the police did to him.probably just took him home,if that.

The scary part is, that picture isn't too far off the truth for winter in the East Coast of Canada, especially Newfoundland Island!

I'll have to do some searching and see if I can find those old pics. I spent one new years with some buddies on the isand, and we woke up after a heavy snowstorm to find we were trapped in the house! We had to carefully dig our way out through one of the windows, taking the snow we removed and dumping it into the bathtub. We got outside, and all you could see of the surrounding neighborhood was some chimneys! It took over a week to get everyone cleared, and get power up and going again... good thing people on the rock think ahead and have wood stoves in their homes.

Re: body on side of the road - 08/29/08 03:41 AM

Something similar happened to me once. I was taking a friend out to dinner. There was this guy lying in the middle of the parking lot, right in my path. I sent her to call 911, and hoped I could remember my first aid training. I left the headlights on him, and got out. When I approached him he opened his eyes and said, “I’m sorry.” Then he wobbled to his feet and staggered into the night.

Overindulgence in some recreational chemical would be my best guess. I was glad I didn’t have to diagnose and treat some injury or collapse under those conditions. Dealing with the paramedics after the fact was more hassle than dealing with the “victim.”

I actually see a white sheeted, or yellow bagged body once every three months, or so along the shoulders of Los Angeles freeways. Lots of people, lots of cars, lots of accidents. Plenty of transients and working folk doing what they do along offramps too.

Similar story here, heading down in Massachusetts. When you're near the big cities with lots of fast moving traffic merging everywhere, it seems like there's a cross every half mile on the side of the road. The people drive like maniacs and their transport infrastructure is almost Escher-esque...

Ever see blood by way of a car accident by the side of the road? I have only caught glimpses of red three, maybe four times tops.
