Here's The Next Scrap Yard Model To Be Offered!!!! - 10/06/08 08:26 PM

Got It!!! . . . Here's A Pic Of The Next Scrap Yard Model To Be Offered!!!

Coming soon. . . within the week!!!

It's not a Scrapper 7 like most thought it would be. It's much cooler!!!

We've been calling it the SOD (Son of a Dog father)

It has a 7 1/2” long SR-77 blade and is, by far, the coolest design I have ever seen with a Resiprene C handle!

It will be offered in a Limited Edition with satin finish and 2 different combat grade finishes - All Black and all Desert Tan!

Re: Here's The Next Scrap Yard Model To Be Offered - 10/06/08 09:01 PM

SICK!!!! i'm broke!!!!!

Renee, three critical questions.

1) the DFLE differs from the CGDF with respect to the height of the grind and weight. will these combat grades be any different from the LE aside from the crinkle finish? it looks like they do have different grind heights from the picks and the CG's are indeed heavier.

2) will they all include the logo?

3) can we have a comparison photo next to the other great blades of the same class from the clan (hell razor, 'weiler, tramp, sarQ, et cetera)?

Re: Here's The Next Scrap Yard Model To Be Offered - 10/06/08 09:06 PM

I like it. If the price is right, I'll get one.

By the way, my choice would be desert tan without the logo. With due respect to Mike for a very high quality logo: I dislike the logo. I'm a happy-go-lucky nature boy who has some use for cutlery tools when I play outside; I find the angry, fang baring, snarling dog logo not at all to my taste.

Re: Here's The Next Scrap Yard Model To Be Offered - 10/06/08 10:06 PM

While I am excited that there's finally a new knife, I really like the heft of my Yardguard. This new offering, while extremely cool, looks like a Yardguard with a flat grind and no recurve. That makes it hard for me, a "starving college student," to buy on of these unless I sell off my Yardguard to help fund this purchase. Anyway, the tan is very tempting, but I'll have to wait and see if I still want one once the sale date comes along.

One question for [color:"red"] Renee[/color]:

Will the sale of this knife follow the new business plan or will I have to halt any plans and sit by the computer if I want to get one of these? Thanks!

The size I'm looking for! The shape I'm looking for. It's between this blade and the new Bravo 2 depending on what the price and ease of delivery is.

Re: Here's The Next Scrap Yard Model To Be Offered!!!! - 10/06/08 10:41 PM

this is the best blade offering ever I believe. cg for me. I can put a great edge on it for about 10 dollars at the local grinding shop and it will save lots of money. maybe the chopweiler reign will be short. all I need is a s9 now.

Re: Here's The Next Scrap Yard Model To Be Offered - 10/06/08 10:56 PM

As far as the specs, they will be coming soon!

I do believe that the logo will be on the combat grade knives and the only ones that are numbered are the LE's.

I will check and see what we can do about a comparison photo.

As far as ordering these knives the new procedure will be used.

These knives are absolutely GORGEOUS!!!!

Re: Here's The Next Scrap Yard Model To Be Offered!!!! - 10/06/08 10:59 PM

That broad blade says "chopper" to me. And it looks so Scrap Yard. Not a Camp Tramp or a Sarsquatch, but finally a SYKCO camp knife, and well done at that. I'll have to get the LE. That's another good thing: It is available in three flavors. Something for everybody. This is really a much more impressive knife to me than the S7 prototype. Very, very nice.

Has anyone noticed there are three times as many Dogs on the forum than normal right now? This may turn out to be a very popular offering I'll be ordering a black one when the time comes . I think this will give the Dog Father a run as my favorite knife

Get ready Rainwalker. I'll be needing leather again

Having done many stripping and sanding jobs, I will gladly pay the extra for a nice satin finish. It is easy for me to maintain and it looks great. I like the SOD LE. I like the DFLE. I like the DMLE. If I had one, I'd like the S6LE. I am so glad we have a choice in this model.

Wise decision MRpink! When the S-6 was originally offered I was only going to get the CG model. Rooikat helped convince me to get an LE version as well, and I'm glad I did! Folks, this is going to be the SY blade that all others are measured by from this point forward. This is going to be the .30-06, Ford Mustang, well, you get the idea.

Very well done Dan!

Now to decide on how many, which ones, and how to pay for them...

I am going to E-Bay and sell some knives I don't want,,,,Does anyone know if Scrap Yard takes Pay Pal yet?

Scrapyard has always taken Paypal. That was one of my secrets to always being in the top 5 orders. All you had to do was select Paypal and your order number was generated. Then you could take your time to fill out the PP page.

oh no,now i have color options.

i want satin & tan but only need one.hell, when it comes to sharpened steel i dont really NEED anything.

i think this blows the S7 out of the water completely.i wasnt looking forward to the S7 at all but am totally in love with this design.

everyone swore up and down that they knew the S7 was next and dan really through the yard for a loop.good job dan.

this knife is sure to be a scrapyard and busse kin legend to be revered.the SFNO and any other 7in blade about to rear its head in the near future is gonna have its work cut out for it.

absolute grand slam with the knife itself, then you add 3 color scheme selections and this is legendary.

this is only a difficult choice if the CG is heavier than the LE, as was the case for the 10" DF. if they're all the same, it's LE for me. otherwise, i may opt for the heavier CG in black.

may have to get both.

Thank you Bruce, and I'm sure Renee thanks you too with so many people concerned that this one won't be part of the new business plan.

This will be my first Scrapyard, and as I said before, I almost gave up on the hope of ever getting one.

(I know I could have gotten one on the secondary market, but it was very frustrating to know that many were buying straight from SY at half the secondary market price. I couldn't do it.)

I'll be honest, I would have gotten whatever they released... but I can't be more thrilled with this one, it's exactly what I've been looking for!

I already had Jeff put me down for some kydex pants!

Re: Here's The Next Scrap Yard Model To Be Offered - 10/07/08 04:00 AM

The only reason I would get a LE version is because I do not have anything that size in a satin finish, but the Tan sure looks great.

From the photos it appears that maybe the CGs are high saber grinds. The LE is clearly a full flat grind. In that case, the LE is likely slightly thinner at the spine and a bit lighter. We will know soon when the specs are posted. They may be the same. It is hard to tell from the pics, but that's how it looks to me. I'm going for the LE, myself. I think it is beautiful.

I like the logo better than Busse COMBAT etched on my blade. It makes it hard to explain to the nice officer that it's a camping tool, not a weapon when it says combat right on the blade.

For what its worth, The LE is just flat out "Fine" its hard to say more...The Tan is absolutely amazing in looks and is probably the coolest looking knife that we have made (in my humble opinion)... the black has that military presence pouring from it. You will also not believe the feel once you handle them...it is as if I built the knife in your hand while you waited.

is this the first tan scrapper not being called a "military over run"??........
not that it matters.just an observation.

something for thought.i really like the tan and i really like the satin too and i think a tan res-c handle on a satin LE blade would be really cool and a scrapyard first.

i think swamprat may have done it with a BR or something, not sure.

i might just sell my S6 now, seriously and its not because i have too either.i just know this one will replace it a lot of the time.

good lord, someone created something that could replace my CW also.

and not to be negative but any thoughts of getting a bravo 2 are out the window for me although it would've been a bravo 2 over an S7 interestingly enough.

way to go scrapyard,again.

i've probably never been so excited about any of the releases since i came along and i got here just in time for the YH & YG

Feels good.

...

Ok, here's one question, and it's a dumb one but I gotta ask...

If the CG versions need the coating to protect the blades, what's protecting the blade of the LE? Why doesn't the LE (with the same steel) need the coating?

Anyone?

Re: Here's The Next Scrap Yard Model To Be Offered!!!! - 10/07/08 04:15 PM

Any SR77 can rust. A lot of the Dogs have learned to prevent that problem with proper blade care. Others like myself just like the looks of the coated blade and the extra rust prtection it offers. Also some Dogs prefer the full height grind of the LE models to the sabre grind of the CG models.

I have a DMDC and keeping rust off of it hasn't been a problem.

The coating is put on the blades for those who want it as something to prevent over-excessive wear and tear on the blade, as well as assisting in rust and corrosion of the blade. Eventually, the coating will "thin" in areas and show the steel of the blade. The satin finish is there for those of us who like "shiny" blades; this of course means more care must taken to oil the blade to help prevent any degradation of the steel.

Of course, I've had the DMLE absolutely soaked for an entire weekend in the woods (miserable rain!), and only noticed a vague hint of brownish rust on the blade edge. Dans' steel seems to deflect rust better than most on the market today, and it's not even a stainless! Very good steel!

Re: Here's The Next Scrap Yard Model To Be Offered!!!! - 10/07/08 04:29 PM

Besides those advantages, SY doesn't need to spend as much time making the steel under the coating nice = less labor = less money for us.

Jackel, you're a champ!

That's a sweet review.

So basically, when the coating rubs off, I'm going to have to take the same care as with the LE model?

Sounds like the coating puts off more attentive maintenance for a time.

Cool.

After every outside use, I clean and oil my knive, and put some mineral oil on the micarta handle, I also tried it on the G-10 handles, not the same, but still put a shine on it. I'm going to buy some of those Tuff Cloth and see how they do.

this is going to be a tough decission for me, I have always wanted a Tan Scrapyard, however I plan on using this one so the LE is the logical choice. Hopefully the price is low enough I can get both, if not I will end up getting the Tan one.

We won't know for sure until the actual specs are posted. It's almost impossible to tell from the pictures. Myself and some others have speculated that the CG models are sabre grinds based on past offerings.

I don't think anyone will be disappointed if all three models are full height flat grinds

Re: Here's The Next Scrap Yard Model To Be Offered - 10/07/08 09:02 PM

satin finishes don't rust too easy, and they last longer and cut better!
I say go for it.
I think the coating will prevent rust (though the edge is still exposed) for a short time, and a coating may look more "cool" but I personally would go with a satin finish!

I think it would be great if they are all full flat goodness. but looking at the pics, and specifically the "grind line" it's easy to trace the le model all the way to the spine, but the cg's fade out 2/3 - 3/4 of the way up. i'm thinking it's a high sabre grind.

They never said it would take 4 weeks, or that it wouldn't. They said they would have a model or two available to order for 4-6 weeks before they will stop orders on that knife. That way, say you don't order one the second they put it up (like I and a hundred others will I'm sure!) you can place your order in the next couple weeks and still get one.

As far as how long it will take to get it to your house, that isn't known yet (by us at least) and there very well may be a bunch of them ready to go for the first several orders with the remaining orders being filled as the knives are produced.

Basically, until more info is given we shouldn't assume it will take 4-6 weeks or longer to get a knife, and we shouldn't assume that it won't.

I seriously don't think, though, that SY is going to wait until the 4 weeks is up and then say, "Welp, lets get the total. Ok, so that's 10,000? Ok, fire up the grinders!"

But I could be wrong.

I believe you are wrong, that is how Swamp Rat did it, and I would be willing to bet that is how the yard will do it. They need to know how many knives to produce of each color scheme before fabricating them. I hope I am wrong but highly doubt it. Either way that is fine, just to know I will have it before Christmas makes me happy and gives me more time to save up the cash

I tend to agree; I figure they've already started making some, knowing they'll sell at least that amount, and as more orders come in, they'll make more. Say, every time they get 20 orders (or 50, or whatever number they decide), they start making them; next group of orders and so on and so forth.

With this group of hungry dogs, I'm betting Dan has got about 50 to 100 of each already made, knowing they'll sell here or at one of the knife conventions he goes to; it's the way I'd plan it with a fine product like he has, and a faithful and eager customer base just waiting for it.

Hmmmm yes you see well . But realistically for me ATM, I'm in for 2. One for the boy & myself. Ad's took one look at these SOD's, looked at me with that look kids give their parents. And said, "MUMMA". But that's going to happen after your 10 year old cuts his teeth on Scrap Yard knives . His collection(YKCG & DMDC) is yearning for an SOD

If only I lived in the US, man I would buy up big. Six, yeah I like that

Now to work out how to pre-order off ScrapYard Co, once these go up. I've never "PRE-ORDERED" before . Hope the different time zone doesn't screw me

They have a large machine. They pour a mixture of iron and carbon and some trace metals in one hopper, and recycled Schwinn handle bar grips in another hopper, and five minutes later a new Scrap Yard knife comes out. All they need to do is count them and turn the machine on and off. And shovel the coal. A huge coal-fired mechanical computer with lots of wheels and gears does all the rest. I hope that helps.

Re: Scrapper 7 and a bit more!!! - 10/08/08 04:10 AM

The wife saw what I was looking at and just laughed. She then reminded me that I have my trip to Alabama (Bama v. Ole Miss) coming in November, followed by Xmas and then a skiing trip to Jays Peak.

She thinks she is funny. Little does she know that I created a slush fund, one even the sleaziest politician would be proud of, to provide for my "Doggish Needs." We'll see who laughs last! Of course, then I have to hide them .... I need a bigger safe.

The only real question is, can I pull off one of each?

Can't decide, I might have to pick up all three. I like the sabre on the CG and the full flat on the LE equally well. Good times ahead .

Re: Here's The Next Scrap Yard Model To Be Offered!!!! - 10/08/08 06:47 AM

Hmm, seems like a reasonable design, but I wouldn't buy it with use in mind. Its pretty, and the design is nice looking, but I wouldn't rate its functionality nearly as high as the Camp Trap or Chopweiler. For one thing, thumb ramps like that just get in the way, especially if you're doing bushcraft. All of the knives I have to include that feature are seriously limited in their functionality because of it. The exception is the RMD, but it's ramp is not nearly as severe as this one. There's a ton of wasted space in the ricasso, I'm not really sure why... I guess that kinda a signature of the SY line. I'm also not sure why the choil is so large and squared. I know this is to show its linage relating back to the DF, so I guess I would have the same questions about that knife's design. On the plus side, it would be better for slashing (lighter than a CW) and also better at chopping through concrete blocks (being S7). If machete work or concrete management is your thing, this knife looks perfect. For woodland bushcraft, I'm glad I got my CW when I did.

Just my reflections based on using such knives in practical, wilderness settings. Take it or leave it. After all, a lot of wild opinions do exist. Just look at the people who think partially serrated knives are better for survival

Well C&D, to each their own! I have a LOT of knives of different designs and manufacturers, and each one appealed to me for one reason or another. And bushcraft KNOWLEDGE is more important to me than the search for the "perfect" bushcraft knife. Imagine a Chopweiler with a Resiprene-C handle - much like KnifeGuy's concept "Scrapweiler". THAT would be sweet!

keep it clean, guys (with the politics)

Anyway, yes Pvt. Klink you're absolutely right. Getting it perfect is only important for your number one tool: your brain. There's a lot more wiggle room for your number two tool: the knife

I don't mean to bash the yard, and the SOD seems like one of the best camp knives out there. Enjoy them, and give them lots of use for me!

Having just raked in a load of full-sized Dogfathers, I don't know if I'm going to order SODs. I'm still considering it. However, Steel Fan and I spoke about how he likes to carry a knife, horizontal along the small of the back, and it seems that the SOD would be better-sized for that style of carry. I believe a full-sized DF might stick out on the sides.

Re: Here's The Next Scrap Yard Model To Be Offered - 10/15/08 04:18 AM

Hello everyone, I am considering getting my first good fixed blade and I have a question.

Does anyone know if the edge is 7 1/2” or is that just the blade size? It seems like there's a good inch or more of blade without an edge on it so I'm curious as to what the usable edge length is.

Thanks!

Re: Here's The Next Scrap Yard Model To Be Offered - 10/15/08 07:11 AM

Welcome blan. If you are talking about the SOD, Blade: 7.5", OAL: 12.5".
Posted By: MRpink

Re: Here's The Next Scrap Yard Model To Be Offered - 10/15/08 07:28 AM

What he meant was cutting edge. We won't know for sure until it gets into our hands, but the DMCG is stated 5" blade, but actual cutting edge is close to 4.25". So I'd imagine the SOD with a 7.50" blade has about a 6.75" cutting edge. Hope that helps.

Re: Here's The Next Scrap Yard Model To Be Offered - 10/15/08 01:49 PM

Thank you MRpink, that is what I meant.

Does anyone know the cutting edge length for the dog father?

It seems that the SOD has the same choil length so we could just subtract the Dog Father's choil length from the SOD's overall length to get a good estimate of what the SOD's cutting edge will be.

Nope, not scrapyard knives, Sr-77 don't need to like most Sr-101 knives.

Man I love that convexed Mutt. I recently stripped my DMCG of it's blackness and will be sending it off to Bark River for the Barkie Spa Treatment. I have a Harbor Freight sander but I just don't have the skills yet to put an edge like that on it. In fact, before I stripped it, I messed up the tip on my Mutt but managed to fix it with a file. It's very dull now but I've seen what Bark River can do and have faith that it will be a fine slicer when I get it back.

Hey the SOD is the first Scrapyard knife i've owned. i've been lurking around this site for some time and finally decided to register. after seeing some of the modifications that some members have done to their other knives, im intrested in finding out what, if any, modification that any of you have planned for your SOD? I ordered a Black/Black and i plan on stripping the blade, convexing the edge, and grinding down the thumb choil on the spine to make it a bit more streamlined. i also may reprofile the clip point like horn dog did with his Sarsquach(sp?)

Yeah, on the secondary market. Seriously though, They probably will be releasing a date soon of when sales will no longer be available on this model.

This will be the perfect blade for campers, hikers, whatever

Not too short to be a decent chopper, not too long/too heavy to carry on a long hike. And the price is just right! (for the CG)

There is really one word for this, nerdgasm. (nerdgasm:When someone has experienced just too much nerdiness at one time, they are saidto have a nerdgasm. The person usually goes into a state of shock and can't speak for up to 1 hour. Never distured a someone who as recently nerdgasmed because the person is prone to just spurt out random nerdy things that regular people could never comprehend.:) This is shocking in a good way.
