Re: SOD Pricing - 10/08/08 02:23 AM

Dan, do the CG and LE models have the same grind and weight?

the 10" CGDF is heavier than the LE, just wondering if the same goes for the new model.

Re: SOD Pricing - 10/08/08 02:23 AM

Well hell, if that ain't a good deal there's just not one to be had! I'll be buying at least one of each, and maybe even a couple of each of the CGs at that price.

That's a very nice price. I'll still need to sell something to buy it, but the inexpensive pricing makes it easier.

Cheers.

I prefer the satin. It is easy for me to maintain with a scotchbrite buffing wheel. I don't care for a mirror polish. It shows every scratch and fingerprint. The painted ones are easier to maintain than a mirror finish. I have noticed that the paint is getting better all the time. It is quite durable. You can scrub it pretty hard to clean it and the coating stays intact. If I was in the military, I'd get a coated one. Mostly, I just like the look of the satin finish. Ooooh, bright and shiny.

[censored] those look good ,I am going to get a LE as a little brother for my DFLE and
a CG to strip and thinn out the edge as a user. I love my DFLE but I have even thought of selling it because I just can't bring myself to scar her up.
I probably could if I did not have a user SH-E though.

The LE in the photo ,#24 has my JYD number.

Re: SOD Pricing - 10/08/08 04:30 AM

I use my DFLE more than my other choppers. It still looks pretty good to me. If anything, the LEs show less wear than the coated blades.

Re: SOD Pricing - 10/08/08 05:40 AM

I am having a hard time deciding between the SODLE or the back one or both.
Money is tight and I already have a custom bowie on the way so I may just get the one SODle to match my DFLE.

I usually agree with HornDog on the LE but this is a bit harder with the SOD because they are both full flat grinds unlike the Dogfather. Also like a lot of people money is tight recently. I may not even get one at all though I am sure I will kick myself later if I don't just like I do with the S6LE. The thing is I have a nice 8 inch flat ground Steel heart Ergo and a Rosarms SN Bayonet which is a great 7,1/2 inch do everything bowie knife.

Money is tight for me as well. But I still have to serrate the Nuke EDC and send the NMFBM CG to Ban for some work. I have dropped all hobbies and pleasures. What? Take my wife to a dinner and a movie? Not until I get my fill of steel! Recurves are nice, but the YH just doesn't chop as I thought it would. Outside of a fighter, no recurves for me...

Re: SOD Pricing - 10/08/08 02:02 PM

So what is wrong with a full flat grind? I love a full flat grind. Put a nice little convex edge on it and you are good to go. With a full 1/4" spine thickness, the blade is plenty strong. Unless you just want a bit more weight with the saber grind.

Hmmm not sure whether it will better my S6, that's tough. I suppose it's how you use it. But my son sure will try . This SOD is his. Freakin' alternator AND the starter both! Talk about the opposite of 4 leaf clover luck! Aaaargghh!

I'm having my buddy tow it to my home tomorrow, I'm gonna buy the parts refurbished (better warranty on refurbished anyway), and he an I are gonna install them in the truck ourselves. We're both fairly decent with repair work, and worse comes to worse, I've got the Haynes manual as a reference just in case. Fortunately, I own one of the Chev 2000 model S10s with the 4x4 lift, so there's plenty of room to get at the gear underneath. It'll be an interesting Thanksgiving weekend, to say the least!

All in all, I'l probably have to wait til next pay to get just ONE of the two SODs that I wanted to get, either the LE or the Tan.
Posted By: Shaolin

Re: SOD Pricing - 10/09/08 11:14 PM

You know you have about 6 weeks to pay for it, right? You can order now, if you can have all the money then.
Posted By: tyger75

Re: SOD Pricing - 10/09/08 11:58 PM

Yeah, true.... let's see a Tan, an LE, and S&H is $24.95 to Canada, convert that to Canadian funds, plus add at least $60 in duty to pay at the post office.... that's roughly $411 at todayss exchange rate.

Alright, if they don't pull the money out for 6 weeks, and provided the repairs to the truck don't cost too much, I should hopefully be able to squeeze myself the purchase. I'll know for sure once I've got the truck up and running after this weekend. Fingers crossed!

LOL, my truck died as well. The clutch finally went after 250,000 miles and took a few things with it. I parked it in the garage and I'm either riding my bike to work or walking. It's only 5 miles or so. I haven't felt this good in years and I know if I fix the truck I'll stop walking/riding. I may not fix it for awhile, esp. if the Busse family keeps coming out with new knives.

Sadly, I live over 60 kilometers from work, and getting up at say 3 in the morning to bike to work, to do an hour of exercise on top of that at the base, just isn't very appealing right now.... especially with the first signs of winter starting to show.

Plus, deer season is here, and kinda need the truck to get out to the hunting area and also to bring my catch back.

Re: SOD Pricing - 10/16/08 10:57 AM

[Linked Image from img.photobucket.com]

Saber grind is #3 and full height grind is #2.

The bevel for a saber grind knife starts around the middle and tapers down to the edge, giving it a more obtuse angle.

Full Height grind tapers from the spine down to the edge.

There's both advantages and disadvantages for both grinds. Saber grinds are generally heavier due to have more steel in the middle, therefore it is tougher; and full height grinds are lighter and cut better due to the more acute angle.

For me, I don't mind the extra weight of saber grind and the extra bit of toughness, plus it's a better base if I ever plan to fully convex it, #6.

Hahah, it's called a hollow grind, think of it as the opposite of a convex grind, it concaves (hollow) in.

Check out the first picture. Hollow and convex grind in one knife.

Re: SOD Pricing - 10/20/08 02:16 AM

a saber grind that starts half way down the blade is often more obtuse. the busse saber grind is a very high saber grind. my choppweiler has a saber grind that starts a quarter way down the spine. I think the edges could be made to be very close in thickness. a lot of blades that are full flat grinds are more narrowa, so with the wide design of the sod it will be as sharp or could be as sharp as another full flat grind like the dmdc or maybe the S6. I would have to know blade width to be sure. not thickness but width of the blade.the choppweiler is incredible and has a saber grind. the sarsquatch is the same length with a full flat grind. in the sod I want the saber. S7 is not cutlery steel and is a poor choice for a slicer. don't kill me but S7 is tool steel. I love the cgyk but for slicing I go cpm154, 154cm, other stainless, 52100, 1095 and others, not in that order.

Not to be a critical or technical but 3 is actually a scandi grind because it is a dual single bevel or simply a simple bevel but not to be confused with 4 which is a single bevel (meaning only one grind on one side) chisel grind.

Number 5 is the saber and most grind these days include a second bevel which is very different from a scandi. Also, I think Pink did state that the saber grinds can vary from knife type to knife type. 3/4, 7/8, 1/2, etc., etc..

Yeah you're right. The picture isn't really accurate, most full flat grind (2) have a bevel too but they didn't show it. It's just a very simplified diagram, but thanks for pointing that out.

Looks like I can unstick this thread.
