Sallie is Sick...

Sallie is Sick... - 10/09/08 05:34 AM

Hey guys, we’re having some problems with Sallie. Could you please pray for her & my family & that everything will be alright? For the past several days, she’s been eating very little, and vomiting several times a day. (3x two days ago) Even though we couldn’t afford it, we took her to the vet yesterday. Mom was hoping the cost wouldn’t be more then $50-$100, but it ended up being around $400. She ended up getting 3 X-rays, a shot to calm her stomach, an antibiotic, and a blood test. She’s still not eating very much, and is pretty lethargic.

Looking at the X-rays, the doctor said her intestines should be evenly distributed around, but they’re shoved to the rear. She said she can’t tell why from the X-ray. Also her spleen is enlarged. She said that could be from age, a tick bite, diabetes or cancer. She said her intestines also looked inflamed, and gave us an antibiotic for her. Here are the X-rays:

She’ll be 5 this Thanksgiving. I think she’s pretty young to have this trouble. The blood test results haven’t come back yet. Next we’re gonna have to get a urine sample, and that’s another $50 or so. The next step if that doesn’t help is a MRI, which costs $300. The vet said if she needs a surgery, it would be another $600-$1000. If something is wrong with her spleen, it could be removed and she’d be ok. If not removed, she’d eventually bleed to death internally. If it is cancer, if it’s early enough it could be removed, otherwise it would eventually kill her.

My Mom wanted a Weimer her whole life, and finally got one with Sallie. Sallie is the first dog I’ve had since I was a little kid. My Dad and brother are saying we can’t afford those kinds of costs, and let nature take its course. Mom and I are very attached to her and want to do whatever we can to make her well. The situation is causing a lot of stress and anxiety. Please keep us all in your prayers, & that she’ll be ok with minimal expense. Thanks guys.

Re: Sallie is Sick... - 10/09/08 05:54 AM

Prayers and smoke sent. I know the pain, I lost a good friend a few years back. Of all the family members in the house, she tended to follow me around the most. Always stuck by me for some reason. Very, very hard I tell you. Now we have another and wouldn't you know it? Of all the family members in the house, she tends to follow me around the most. My sister says it is because I smell funny. Anyways, great pics .

Re: Sallie is Sick... - 10/10/08 07:30 PM

Sallie didn't eat anything yesterday, so Mom decided we should bring her in to the vet today as soon as they open. She thought we should go ahead with the surgery before she got any weaker.

The vet called us a little before noon. He said she had cancer. The largest tumor was 6-8" long, and that's what was pushing on her guts so she couldn't eat. He said it was everywhere inside, so thick he couldn't find the source, and she was beyond anything he could do. He said she would only grow weaker, starve to death, and have the combined pain from the surgery, so Mom had them put her to sleep. We'll be picking up her body to bury in a few hours. We still don't know what they'll charge us for the surgery, but we're hoping it's on the lower end of the quote.

My Mom has been crying all day. She has high blood pressure and is diabetic, and I'm worried about her from the stress. This was very fast and unexpected. Mom was crying and saying she didn't even hug her goodbye before we left, because she thought this would be routine. Then when Mom left her, she said she was barking at her not wanting her to leave.

We called Dad at work and told him. He's going to start digging her grave when he gets home. Myself, I am still in shock and feel disconnected. And of course I feel very sad and depressed. I see reminders of her everywhere I look. She was my best friend and daily companion.

Please keep my family in your prayers as we deal with the sudden unexpected loss of Sallie. Thanks guys.

Re: Sallie is Sick... - 10/10/08 07:41 PM

Andy,

I just finished showing the x-rays to one of the veterinary pathologists I work with.

From the x-ray she concluded the same thing as your vet. The intestines were pushed too far to Sallie's rear, spleen enlarged, intestines inflamed/puffed up.

She said the spleen enlargement could be caused by any number of things, that a tumor/cancer in such a young dog was rare, but certainly possible.

I just wanted to let you know, because sometimes a second opinion can be a little comforting.

You guys did the right thing by putting Sallie down. Sallie is in a better place.

I am very sorry for your loss.

Re: Sallie is Sick... - 10/11/08 01:50 AM

Thanks guys. The vet gave us a bit of a break. The bill for today was only $600 something. Besides this, I didn’t mention it, but my Mom’s canary also died this week. She also had to spend $100 taking it to the vet (different vet, bird specialist) because it was sick. So, that’s $1,100 in vet bills in one week, and two dead pets. My Mom is really down.

When we got home, Dad had dug her grave. He buried her with one of her bones. We all held each other and cried. She was the best dog I ever had. She will be greatly missed.

Re: Sallie is Sick... - 10/11/08 05:13 PM

Dear Andy,

We are so sorry to hear that Sallie had to be put down. We cried too as we looked at her smiling face in your pictures. She was a beautiful dog and you can see from her photos she was loads of fun too.

I have had that sad opportunity six times in my life. Always had dogs. They always die. Seems their life clock runs so much faster than ours and they age at a high rate. Sadly you always end up saying goodbye to your beloved pet.

We grieve with you this day Andy as you start a new chapter in life without Sallie. Be comforted that she is in no pain and waits for you at The Rainbow Bridge. God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow Andy. And God bless Sallie too.

They ask for so little and give so much.

Peace.

Re: Sallie is Sick... - 10/12/08 03:02 AM

I'm so sorry for your loss. A couple years ago, just after Christmas we had to have my Mom's dog, Buck, put to sleep due to a hemangiosarcoma. I was visiting and noted that something was wrong; he'd stand up, take a few steps, then collapse and pant. When we got him to the animal hospital's 24-hour emergency care center over in Louisville, they did tests and told us that the cancer had ruptured his spleen and that the reason he was so weak was that he didn't have enough blood circulating to carry oxygen. They ran blood tests and said it had spread to his liver, and was terminal. He was unlikely to survive surgery and if he did, he wouldn't live long enough to recover from it.

We cried and decided to have him euthanized -- then we sat with him as he went under. I still mourn his loss even though he wasn't my dog. Insensitive people have told me, "It's only a dog." They don't understand how big a part of our lives a pet can be. So, I know exactly what you're talking about and going through. It's OK to mourn, even though some people won't understand; Sallie will hold a permanent place in your heart as a beloved lost companion and family member, and that's OK too.

Andy,

Very sorry to hear about your loss of Sallie. I have seen you mention her in many of your posts over the years and can appreciate how important she was to your life. My pets also become a huge love of my life and I too have had to put down some of my best friends and favorite family members. A couple in particular were exceptionally hard and painful as they were such a huge part of the joy in my life. I feel your pain.

Best wishes to you and your family to help cope.

Andy,

I'm sorry to hear what happened. Like POP and Klink, I've lost my share of pets over the years, and it's never easy. After a while though, you forget the pain of the loss, and just remember the joy they brought and shared with you.

They are family, and will always be thought of as such. Peace be to you and yours.

Andy,

Saw that you put your Battle Rat on the auction site to help
pay the bills. Wish I had that kind of ready cash to help you
out my friend but I don't.
What I do have is some extra bucks kicking around in my PayPal
account that aren't doing much at this time.

Post your PayPal address or pm me with it and I'll send something
your way to help out.
