Interesting choil on the SOD

Interesting choil on the SOD - 01/05/09 07:29 PM

I love my new SOD LE. I was wondering why the choil was designed the way it was. It seems widened for some reason. I know that some were put off by it as taking more of the cutting edge than was necessary. I dont find it to be an issue though given my perception of the purpose of the knife.

I like it too, I compare it to the CT choil and I actually have more to hold on to with the SOD compare to the CT.

glad a thread was started cause there does seem to be a bit o talk about the SOD choil.

i havent gotten mine yet so i cant say exactly, but from the looks of it id say i feel pretty neutral about it.

i always have a small knife for fine work so choking up on a big knife isnt something id normally do.

as far as loosing 3/4" of edge, i guess if you really NEED to baton a certain size of wood youd be out of luck but im sure if you keep turning the log youll find a piece you can split off.

Re: Interesting choil on the SOD - 01/05/09 09:38 PM

Actually, I find having the choil a very useful thing.

With the SOD being a bit blade heavy, if I need to do
something that requires more of a balanced blade, the
ability to move my hand further up the blade for better
balance is nice.

Of course I do like mcjh does and have a secondary knife
with me at all times, that is smaller and better able to
accomplish tasks suited to a small blade. However, in
the event that I find myself with only one blade available
to me, I do like the option of being able to choke up on
the blade in case I only have the one knife available to me.

Just my opinion tho.

Cheers

Ah yes . . . the perennial choil thread.

This is an oft discussed topic. Some people like choils, some people hate choils. I'm pretty neutral when it comes to choils. But I can tell you why the SoD has a large choil. The answer is that the choil (as well as the blade shape and the thumb ramp) were patterned after the Dog Father. Hence the name, Son of Dogfather.

I've made an observation about the thumb ramp.

When I'm handling the knife by the handle, as opposed to choking up on the blade,
I don't use for the thumb ramp. When I'm choking up on the blade using the choil,
it appears to me that the thumb ramp is too far back to be of much use.

Anyone else see this, or am I just off in my little world

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love this knife

Cheers

Shhhh. Don't tell anybody. But the first thing I'd do if I had a SoD is grind off the thumb ramp.

Re: Interesting choil on the SOD - 01/05/09 11:02 PM

I heard that!!

I don't particularly care for the ramp, but I don't hate it either. If you hate it, mod the blade. I read a while back on the Himalayan Imports subforum of BladeForums where several guys were giving grief to another for moding the grips of his khuk. Granted, it had been decoratively carved, but it was too thick for him so he sanded it. Folks said that he defaced the kami's art, but I felt that since he bought it and it didn't feel comfortable to him, then he should feel free to mod it -- if they don't like it, tough, it's not theirs. That mod was one reason I got a good deal on the D-guard when he sold it, and I agree that as thick as the handle still is, it would have been uncomfortable for me too.

Don't forget to complete the Tramp-transformation by rounding out the choil.

+1 I have been fondling mine as well and I agree about the bigger hands as mine would not be able to choke up as well with a smaller choil. I give it a 10 in the looks department, I like clean lines and a simple but refined look which I think this Son of a Dogfather pulls off well.

Actually, so do I. But "pretty" is the last thing I'd be thinking about if I found myself in the unfortunate position of having to cut my way out of an overturned jeep.
The SoD is a great knife, no doubt. Whether it becomes a legend remains to be seen.

I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of my "new to me" Camp Tramp.
It should be here any day now.

Then I'll be able to compare the SOD and CT side by side

The Camp Tramp looks like a giant DM to me. Certainly not a bad looking knife, Vance, but I can't see grinding up a SOD just to make it look like a CT. I love the CT. It's a great knife and worthy of all the praise it gets. I like the more pointed SOD even better.

hey how big is that CT choil gap? it looks very similar to the SOD.

Re: Interesting choil on the SOD - 01/06/09 07:26 AM

Lay them on top of one another and they are indeed very similar.

Re: Interesting choil on the SOD - 01/06/09 07:34 AM

Both are great knives I would say. The CT having better edge retention while the SOD is a bit tougher and easier to sharpen I am told. As for performance ? Sounds like they BOTH perform QUITE well. I will soon find out. Great thread here

After fondling my SOD's(no thats not a euphemism)for the last few hours i can say that i absolutely love everything about this knife.Fits my hand as good as if not better than any knife i have ever held. The squarer choil actually feels very comfortable.

Re: Interesting choil on the SOD - 01/06/09 04:21 PM

I like the choil, for the small bit of blade sacrifices, there is a lot of utility gained. Long live the choil. (same goes for the thumbramp)

I noticed that too but again I think given the fact that I will also have a secondary cutter on me I dont feel I will be using the SOD in the manner necessitating the ramp too much.

Re: Interesting choil on the SOD - 01/06/09 06:39 PM

If the thumb ramp were moved forward of the choil, the blade would look wierd and it would require a very wide sheath. I can use the forward slope of the thumb rest if using the choil with my trigger finger, since using the knife choked up is likely doing draw cuts anyway.

Made that observation myself. I wonder how it would affect
the balance of the blade?

it would require a very wide sheath.
Sheath design would have to be a bit radical in that regard.
It would make for an interesting sheath design though I think.

Very good points!
Thanks for giving food for thought.
