SAR sheath/pouch - 02/01/09 02:58 AM

Howdy folks.
I am looking for a knife sheath/pouch combo.
There was a guy who is a SAR medic, jumps out of helo's or something
on the forums (this forum and BF).He posted a few pictures of his
setup. I was looking and looking and cant seem to find that post.
Anyone remember him or what he was using? It was a muddy sheath
mounted on some kind of mil pouch.Inside he had some basic
supplies,compass,fire starting equip etc...
Any of you carry a similar setup?
Thanks.

River8 is a cool guy. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
It was one of his pictures on the riverside-graphics
site that got me interested in looking at Camp Tramps. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

My dad and I have wanted to make something like that. joules 360 (Troy) had an amazing one for his old style Ratwiler, it was same style and design as the riverside graphics-guys.

Look at the one on the bottom:
HSGI knife and sheath slides inside and you can attach molle pouches to the outside. Google "drop leg panel" and "web gear" or try Blackhawk, Eagle Industries, Tactical Tailor, Spec Ops Tech (not the same as "brand"), Specter to name few. Probably looking at $100 by the time you're done and that doesn't include the sheath. The upside is once you start collecting molle you move it around - turn the above leg panel into a magazine subload, move pouches you might purchase for the above to a belt/pack/etc.
This guy usually has good prices(he's selling the HSGI for $3 less than HSGI), I'm always checking to see what he has on sale: OP Tactical (pretty good list of manufacturers on this page)

Like I mentioned above, starting out in molle is pricey but the upside is if you're buying durable products (not swap meet tacticool knockoffs) it lasts a long time.

Nice links Terrorbl ,thanks!
That looks like a great way to build a
sheath system.A Plain Jane kydex sheath mounted behind
that drop leg system would e great.
You could even make it so you could change
sheaths for different knives! Cool... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Now to choose which knife to start with...
SOD?
DFLE?
Maybe the Skinny Ash!
Man,I feel like a kid looking through the Sears WishBook Catalog!

I met Troy (360joules) at the Eugene knife show last year.
Really nice guy. Hope I get to run into him at Blade West this year
if I can get down there.
I think he mentioned that he was in SAR as well.

Had an idea, still working on it, will post pics in a few hours.

If sheathmakers follow a general rule of placing a rivet/eyelet every inch then....

more to come

Re: SAR sheath/pouch - 02/03/09 12:20 AM

360joules, and River-8's sheathes are very nice indeed. River-8 is making one for my tan SOD. As far as I know, Troy has passed on all the sheath making supplies to John(River-8). John mashes the kydex and sews the pouches, and does all the webbing. John is very handy when it comes to making gear. Just send him a PM on BF or e-mail him from his site (riverside-graphics).

Here is link to John's site showing the "SAR Pest" that he designed.

And here is a link to the company selling his design.
