Two Knives, but which two

Two Knives, but which two - 02/04/09 06:56 PM

I'm trying to get together a small kit for outdoor wandering etc. I was going to include 2 knives. One bigger, one smaller. I was looking for some input. My current choices for the larger are the NMSFNO, SOD, and Chopweiler. For the smaller one i was trying to choose between the SS4, or my Bark River Bravo-1. Any thoughts?

I generally have three to 4 knives with me when I am out in the woods. They include a larger one for chopping, a shorter and smaller blade for general tasks, a fillet knife, and a folder clipped to a pocket--not to mention my multi-tool. One of these days I am going to add a hatchet too.

SOD & Mud Puppy might be a good option.

Man, that's a tough choice choosing between those 3 choppers..

Quite the conundrum.

Wiggity take them all in a backpack and take plenty of pictures. If the SOD is that #1 I would have to think long and hard about it!

no the sod #1 will not be seing duty in the field. i'm leaning towards the nmsfno as the larger knife.

Like this:
DFLE
SODLE
S6LE
SS4
You could replace maybe SODLE with DFLE and SS4 with MPLE ? I am really starting to like my LE stuff for field carry. They just FEEL better and the larger chop better. I am still working on buying a DFLE- as I only have the DFCG ( tank) . Just my thoughts

Since you'll have a big knife, the NMSFNO, you won't need much blade for the small knife. I'd go with the SS4. Believe it or not, the Bravo-1 can actually do light chopping.

Re: Two Knives, but which two - 02/04/09 07:59 PM

I dont have an SS4, but I do have the Bravo-1. The Bravo-1 is a great knife, mine has lost it's edge and I have not bought the materials needed to strop it back to life.....I haven't done this before. Anyway as i am not use to convex edges it should be fun, but Bravo -1 has a great feel and it's got a nice feel to it.

That Bravo-1 will snap right back into shape with no problem! Get you a strop and get after it. If it's too far gone for the strop, do the old mouse pad and sandpaper trick. Bark River has a good tutorial right Here .

As for the subject of this thread, any of the big knives are excellent choices, and then pair one of them up with an SS4 and you're good to go. You could also throw a One-Hand Trekker in your pack somewhere and you'd really be prepared!

I love the Bravo-1. Once you get the hang of it, keeping the convex edge sharp is easy.

I always have a CQC-7 folder on me and would have it when out wandering, to that I would add my sod and my yard keeper. Those two are the only scrap yard I have but I would carry a scrapper 6(next on the list) if I had it over the sod just because it fits my hand better(had one) . I do have a gryphon m35 that I would not hesitate to carry because it is also a great knife(my opinion) and of course my leathermen super tool to round out my kit. Opinions offered are solely my own stupid thoughts.

I hate when I type and hold other thoughts and or conversations and this happens ......."Anyway as i am not use to convex edges it should be fun, but Bravo -1 has a great feel and it's got a nice feel to it" ---duh

Re: Two Knives, but which two - 02/04/09 10:24 PM

i love the feel of the bravo, but was wondering if the SS4 would be a better choice only b/c of the mudder handles. wonder how slippery the bravo would be if it was wet

Re: Two Knives, but which two - 02/04/09 10:32 PM

those blades are all capable. i'd go with whatever you paid the least for.

that's the military way. cheapest that can still do the job.

I have two combo’s as my choice for bush trips,
One is the SFNO with the Active Duty

[Linked Image from i7.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i7.photobucket.com]

The other is the Chopweiler and a Howler LM
It would be very hard to pick a favorite out of the two of them, they are both great choices for bush work.

That Chopweiler HRLM combo is a beast Trumby!

For me, in a two fixed blades contest the decision is simple. It would be the SOD and Busse AD.

If I was really going to take off...and weight was somewhat of an issue. Hmm, the SOD as the largest, the AD, Kobalt multi-tool and a SAK.

Re: Two Knives, but which two - 02/04/09 11:12 PM

the AD is a good thought for the smaller knife. I do have an AD that needs more love.

Re: Two Knives, but which two - 02/04/09 11:22 PM

I think the AD and the NMSFNO is a great idea too!!!

Second choice... SOD and SS4...

Third... Chopweiler and Swamp Warden... or HCLE.

Just to add some confusion to the mix
Here are a couple of older combo’s that are good for bush work.

The Camp Tramp and gen 1 Howler.

Also the Gen 1 Howler with an AS

Trumby has some great combos I have seen over at the swamp. The Merkel? combo I saw once was pretty great.

Re: Two Knives, but which two - 02/05/09 01:50 AM

I usuallycarry a Cold Steel bolo machete with my Camp Tramp or more recently the Ratmandu, the simple machete is thin and I think will outchop any of my other knives.I also always have an Old Timer folder thats always in my jeans pocket(made in the USA,not Taiwan).Sometimes when hiking I would carry the CT and a SOG Seal Pup or HR gen2 as a smaller knife.

Re: Two Knives, but which two - 02/05/09 03:54 AM

I either take my S6 or Bravo-1 + SAK Farmer.

Re: Two Knives, but which two - 02/05/09 04:46 AM

SFNO because its the best steel and i would take a CW over a SOD any day of the week.

between the SS4 and BRAVO is a tough one.

Re: Two Knives, but which two - 02/05/09 04:56 AM

I would have have to say SOD and SS4. Boy i wish i could find one...

Re: Two Knives, but which two - 02/05/09 05:25 AM

For me, its DFLE and SAK OHT.

Re: Two Knives, but which two - 02/05/09 05:37 AM

I gotta admit... the DFLE plus an SAK and/or multi-tool would probably really be my first choice too.

That DFLE is just great!!!

I have a very hard time not carrying a complete knife manufacturing plant
with me
You want 2 knives, and I'm having a difficult time getting it down to 4
Don't think I would feel comfortable with anything less than 3 at a very
minimum.
Oh well.

Re: Two Knives, but which two - 02/06/09 05:29 AM

That had to be a hard loss for Trumby. I know that Stan is missed.

On the combo front, my favorite combos right now:
2 knife: Battle Rat (or Dogfather) + SS4
1 knife: SFNO (or Camp Tramp or SoD)

For a total package add...
Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe
Silky PocketBoy 170
MultiTool (Vic Swiss Spirit) or SAK (OHT or Farmer)

Re: Two Knives, but which two - 02/06/09 10:49 PM

You have some nice options there.....my preference would be the NMSFNO and the SS4....but they are all good. I personally don't like the thumb ramp on the Bravo-1 but if it was removed I would like it. The NMSFNO if similar to the FSH or SFNO LE will be great....I love mine....the SS4 though has to be close to perfect for a small combo...great for food prep and game work.
