Scrapper 5 vs. RMD. - 04/07/09 04:43 AM

Well is the S5 gonna skyrocket to superstardom the way that the Ratmandu has?In my opinion it's already reaching that status and we don't even have a nice clear pic!Everyone is so pumped up including myself.I've never held a mudder grip but around here they are quite popular,so I am looking forward to trying it out. Also the S5 has a beautiful blade shape.I guess the thing is do you prefer the Res-c or micarta slab handle? This is even more exciting to hear that SR-101 will grace the CG! I hope the S5 is 3/16" thick.Do you guys think this is a legend even before release or concrete specs and pics?

Check the store and you will see mudder grips on the Muk, BDLE, MPLE, and the Scrapper 4.

Gah, I just love the looks of the mudder handles. So we should have a CG photo in less that 26 hours.

The Scrapper 5 is doing something right to generate this much pre-release buzz. If the LE does come out in Infi you will see things rise to an even higher pitch.

When the LE is released in INFI.

Unless you have a line on a secondary market RMD from someone attending Blade, I don't think you'll find one there. RatManDus haven't been in production for quite a while; looking back in my email archive, the last ones I bought retail were on 8/14/2007. The last one I saw at Knob Creek was a year ago. You can still find them on the BladeForums Exchange occasionally, but most folks who have RMDs hold onto them, and when they do come up, they sell fairly quickly -- good hunting -- if successful, you'll likely agree that they're worth the quest.

Hey thanks for the heads up Jim! The RMD was actually the first blade I ever saw that was Bussekin. It started it all, so-to-speak!

The mudder grips feel really good in your hands.

Re: Scrapper 5 vs. RMD. - 04/07/09 03:47 PM

My only concern about the S5 (well, not exactly my only concern, since steel type and price are still up in the air, so more accurately, a concern) is how it'll balance; it looks great and I suppose the specs will be similar to the Bog Dog (which had a 4 1/2-inch blade). However, I'd prefer it be neutrally balanced as opposed to blade heavy.

I was looking at picking up a RMD but I think the S5 will be better for me since it will have the mudder grips. JMHO

I look forward to getting the opportunity to make the comparison, I really like the RMD, but the S5 with Mudders is really gunna be something special!

I've never held a RMD, but it's doesn't have mudders.. So i'm gonna put my money on the S5!

Re: Scrapper 5 vs. RMD. - 04/07/09 07:54 PM

Snotpig, the lighting for your pic gives the mudder handles a browner tinge when it is really more on the gray side.

Bruce, I agree that the full tang and micarta slabs give my RMD a hefty feel to the handle. Still, it's a mighty useful/beautiful blade!

Does this mean I need to get a RMD if I can find one? I can tell my wife it is for t/e or comparison reasons!

Good point, Jim. That brings up a question. I assume you have both Micarta and G10 RMDs. Is there any difference in the balance points based on the handle material used? I seem to remember that the G10-handled version was a full ounce heavier than the Micarta-handled version and my G10 RMD seems to be a little handle heavy to me.
I only bought Micarta; G10 RMDs were always sold out when I looked. I've heard that about G10 before though, so you're not alone in that opinion.

Re: Scrapper 5 vs. RMD. - 04/08/09 02:54 AM

I have both, and the G10 version is more handle heavy.

Re: Scrapper 5 vs. RMD. - 04/08/09 03:00 AM

RMD in G10 - 10.6oz or 300g
RMD in Micarta - 10.0oz or 283g

Balance point on the G10 is ever so slightly further back than the micarta. The difference is about 1/8" with both being approximately at the back of the first tube fastener.

Re: Scrapper 5 vs. RMD. - 04/08/09 03:01 AM

I go back and forth on whether to keep the black/black G10 or the sage/tan micarta as my user. I might just keep both.

On a fun note, I laid out my entire collection and let my 7 yr old daughter pick he favorite. She picked the sage/tan RMD.

The RMD unseated even the Busse BATAC for me. But this new Scrapper 5 is going to be sweet. Tough call which one I'll like more. As comfortable as the RMD handle is, the mudder fits me even better.

Well, I guess I will start selling guns so I can feed the new addiction of steel. Not so much getting the new steel, but the older steel for comparison LOL.

I asked Eric at Swamp Rat if they were called Mudder Grips because of their resemblance to on off-road vehicle’s tires?

He said yes, that’s where the name came from.

Re: Scrapper 5 vs. RMD. - 04/08/09 02:44 PM

I don't think the CGS5 will unseat the RMD as the RMD with full tang construction and useable pommel has certain advantages with these features....

Handle comfort wise it is'nt as if the RMD is uncomfortable....far from it really...but mudder grips are highly rated...

The S5 LE if in INFI is a different matter....that may be the INFI RMD which has been awaited for a long time....but in a 5 inch knife the benefits of INFI are not as dominant as they are in larger "chopping" application blade...although none the less the oppertunity to have INFI in such a size intrigues me...it would be an ideal chance to compare SR101 to INFI in blades which are pretty much a "perfect design"....

You gotta love that we are thinking this is going to compete with the perfect blade.

I can't wait...

Re: Scrapper 5 vs. RMD. - 04/09/09 07:31 AM

I’m very excited about this Scrapper 5. What a great design!! I can’t wait!

As far as comparing it with the RMD without having an S5 in hand:

One of the things that I like best about the RMD is how the knife fits the hand in the choke-up position (finger in the choil and thumb on the spine) is just about perfect for whittling and fine knife work. We’ll see how the Scrapper 5 works out. I’m a little bit leery of that thumb brace on the spine for the above reasons.
