My first Bussekin blade - SR Mini Uncle Mojo

My first Bussekin blade - SR Mini Uncle Mojo - 04/17/09 07:23 PM

Picked this one up on the bladeforums exchange. I like the feel of the knife, but it is definitely heavy for the length. Weighs around the same as my Ka-Bar Heavy Bowie, which is a couple inches longer and the same thickness. The SR is also more handle-heavy than the Ka-Bar, which is to be expected with the full tang construction.

Anxious to get out and use this one, but you don't care about what I WANT to do - you care about pics, so here goes (CLICK ON PICTURES TO SEE LARGER):

And some comparison shots with some other larger knives I have and like - a Cold Steel LTC Kukri, and a Ka-Bar Heavy Bowie.

Re: My first Bussekin blade - SR Mini Uncle Mojo - 04/17/09 09:17 PM

Well, I went outside and put it to some use, and I've gotta admit I have mixed feelings. I was batoning in some pretty hard birch, and the edge is pretty nicked up. I purposely picked out a wicked knotty nasty piece to put the blade to the test, and I'm not crazy about the results. The edge took a fair bit of damage, and it's gonna take a lot of work to fix this up. Looks like a lot of rolling and perhaps some chipping too - I will have to clean it up a bit and see what I find.

I didn't mess with the factory edge at all before putting it to work, and it wasn't crazy sharp, but could slice paper.

The knife performed admirably for its size - certainly not as good a batoner as the full flat grind of the ka-bar, but pretty decent. Of course this isn't really a bushcraft-designed knife, but that's how I like to put all my knives through the paces.

Now for the good - the geometry is great for slicing, slashing type motions. I cleared out some thick stands of dead bamboo and it made quick work of them. I also really like the feel of the handle - it was easy to grab the tip of the handle up on for some light chopping, and the choked up position for detail work shaving curls off some birch sticks was very comfortable too. The thumb ramp fits my hand well and doesn't get in the way while choked up.

Apart from the way the edge was damaged, I like this knife a lot so far. We'll see how easily the edge cleans up, and that will have a lot of influence on what I think of the knife in the long run

So I cleaned up the knife a little bit, and ran it over an old unloaded strop to at least get some of the gunk and tar out of the damaged bit of the blade so I could snap some pictures of the damage. Here goes:

I honestly didn't think I abused it THAT hard - unless there was a nail in the birch that I didn't see or something? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> The damage looks to be mostly chipping, so it will take some work to get rid of it.

Great introduction to a new knife, eh? Had it less than a day and I'm already breaking chunks off <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" />

Just confirmed it - not only did some idiot drive a nail deep into the tree who knows how long ago, but they used a hardened tapered shank masonry nail. Now I don't feel nearly as bad about the performance of the edge - I was pounding the hell out of that thing to get it through there, thinking it was just a big knot. Guest that'll teach me to check out the wood a bit more carefully if I am having problems batoning it.

I knew it had to be something, the edge damage is pretty bad, but still fixable.

Well congrats! I'm going to have to pick up a SR mini mojo/uncle mojo one of these days.

I was a little shocked that the edge looked like that after batoning!Had to be a nail or something,my Camp Tramp has taken its fair share of batoning and it never looked like that,in fact the only telltale signs were the scuffs on the coating.Atleast it's broken in now.

Re: My first Bussekin blade - SR Mini Uncle Mojo - 04/18/09 02:17 AM

Yeah, it's definitely BROKEN in, now.

I won't feel bad about anything else I put it through, that's for sure.

I was really surprised to find a nail in there - I cut the tree down in my own backyard, and there was never anything hung from it as long as I've owned the place. There was no sign of a nail on the outside, either. The nail must have been driven in a looong time ago, because the tree was completely grown over it by at least a half an inch.

Similar deal with me. I cut down a Linden in my backyard last year. Went through two chainsaw blades wonder what the heck I was doing wrong or what kind of insane knot was a the bottom of this thing. Finally I gave in, brought in a tree crew to turn the stump into mulch, and the found a massive nail it is as well. I guess the owners from about 20 years ago had a huge nail or spike put in the tree to save it from splitting. Crazy how trees can recover and mask their wounds.

That will buff right out! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> Seriously a little work on the edge and she'll be good as new.

Congrats on the new blade. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

I wondered what was up. No bussekin I've had looks like that after a little wood encounter.

I love the look of that the recurve...just not enough to spend the limited $!

Great looking sheath. Do you know the maker? It resembles Rainwalkers.

If you like the recurve then you should like the YardGuard or YardHook! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Re: My first Bussekin blade - SR Mini Uncle Mojo - 04/19/09 03:11 PM

The sheath was made by David Brown, who is also the guy who sold me the knife. Great guy to do business with - class act all the way!

I am glad I kept reading.

I read your first concerns about SR-101 edge holding up and was dubious. Then I saw those pics and was thinking WHAT THE HECK. I have seen SR-101 look better after chopping cinder blocks.

I am very glad you discovered the hardened nails and posted as much. SR-101 really has amazing edge properties and holds up VERY well.

On the other hand, I do have to agree about the weight and balance of certain recent Swamp Rat knives. I never had the Mojo. I might have considered picking one up, but I had picked up an M6 first. To me, the M6's handle is just too heavy for a blade that size for my preferences. I think the handle needs to be skeletonized or otherwise trimmed down in weight or something. The Scrap Yard S6 just had WAY better balance and feel in the hand to me than the M6. For those who like the feel of just a heavy chunk of steel and don't care for balance, the M6 might be a great? To me, the M6 had more of a chunky sharpened pry-bar with scales feel to it. And while that might be great for some, it just isn't what I look for in a 6" knife.

I might have preferred it with a .20" thick blade or so????

The handle shape, size and feel was O.K. to me, but I felt it could have been trimmed down in size a bit (and weight as mentioned).

Luckily, the RMD is trimmed down in size. The RMD's handle feels "Right" for the size of the knife.

Since the Mojos had the same handle as the M6 and not much more blade, I wasn't so interested. I still have my Yard Guard though. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> But, my Camp Tramp and RMD still rule. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif" alt="" />

The new S5 won't be replacing the Camp Tramp. But, it might very well make the RMD a bit nervous. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I would just call the blade partially serrated now...

Congrats on a great knife.

I suspect that a LOT of RMD's will be getting nervous! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
