S5 preferred use? - 04/26/09 02:02 AM

To those of you whom use their prized knives... what tasks will you be using your S5?
Posted By: MustardMan

Re: S5 preferred use? - 04/26/09 02:02 AM

ALL OF THEM!

Re: S5 preferred use? - 04/26/09 02:04 AM

I plan on buying 2 or 3 so 1 will see use and the others will probably not. I plan to use it as my hiking/camping knife. I'll take it along on hikes, etc. I may also use it around the house for yard-type stuff.

The real question for me is if I buy 2 or 3 color combos - which do I use and which do I not?

Re: S5 preferred use? - 04/26/09 02:19 AM

I see the S5 as an all-around field knife. It would do well for skinning, preparing kindling, meal preparation, and just general cutting chores. I have always preferred the 5" to the 4" in a hunting knife. For years I carried a Schrade Old Timer Deerslayer or else my trusty Air Force Pilots knife. That size is handy and not as bulky as the 7" blades, but big enough to do a lot.

This will be my new, all purpose camp knife to accompany my FFBM.

The NMSFNO still nails it though, if I can only have one.

It's going to see a lot use for hiking/camping. I graduate this semester so I finally get to go outdoors for longer periods of time.

From college?

I'm trying to decide on a knife to take with me while hiking along the WA pacific coast... any suggestions?

Re: S5 preferred use? - 04/26/09 04:13 AM

The S5 will also be my all purpose knife (camping/hiking) and will compliment my SOD.

Yes.

S5? Depends on the terrain and what you plan to do.

Please! I doubt it's worse than Sr77 as far as rust goes. They both are not the best.

That's what INFI is for. It is straight up a freaking miracle steel.

Between this and the SR mini mojo, I'm gonna be well outfitted on my hiking trips. Can put some of those other brand knives I've been carrying in tool boxes and car trunks and keep these as the ones I carry with me. Sweet!

I'll just be adding mine to my current armada of blades i already carry. Thats why i hike in a truck! to carry my blades!

May put the Mutt to guard the safe , and the Scrapper5 to the EDC position.

Re: S5 preferred use? - 04/26/09 09:50 PM

It will go into the edc rotation. We know it will be tough enough for whatever it called upon to do.

Re: S5 preferred use? - 04/26/09 09:57 PM

Ill take mine along on desert runs in the Jeep or out shooting and it looks like it's going to make a nice camp utility blade for my purposes.

It wasn't that long ago. I remember carrying a swiss army knife to school in 5th grade - I was in scouts, and we all carried knives everywhere we went.

Now, in today's world of "zero tolerance" policies and paranoid parents who don't do any actual parenting, kids get expelled for carrying nail clippers or strip searched because they are suspected of carrying aspirin.

Re: S5 preferred use? - 04/26/09 11:58 PM

Luckily I live in a place now that is fairly knife tolerant. But I just moved from Chicago, where I think any blade of 3 inches was illegal.
Posted By: MustardMan

Re: S5 preferred use? - 04/27/09 12:04 AM

Atlanta has some screwy laws - I usually carry a spyderco folder that's technically illegal, but I don't wave it around in front of people, and if anyone ever gives me crap I'll say I carry it for work, and won't mind if they confiscate it because I have a couple more at home

What is your preferred method of carry Mustard?
Posted By: MustardMan

Re: S5 preferred use? - 04/27/09 12:54 PM

Depends on the knife and the location - I'll often keep a largerknife inside my pack to avoid freaking people out, and a folder in my pocket. When hiking, I rarely have anything on my belt, because it interferes with the waist strap of my backpack. I've been known to attach a knife to the left shoulder strap of my pack, handle-down, or sometimes I'll lash my knife to the back of the pack. Not easily accessible, but I'm most likely not pulling my large knife unless I'm getting ready to make a camp.

Basically, I rarely end up carrying a fixed blade unless I'm in the woods, and so my EDC option is a simple folder in the pocket.
Posted By: Poi Dog

Re: S5 preferred use? - 04/27/09 01:01 PM

Thats cool...I was thinking of adding an Izula to my arsenal for a fixed blade EDC.
Posted By: MustardMan

Re: S5 preferred use? - 04/27/09 01:08 PM

I'd definitely like to have an izula. I have a becker necker, and it's a nice fixed blade size for EDC. A good little work and chores knife. Sometimes I'll just throw the becker in my pocket with the kydex sheath on it - it's barely any more bulk than the Spyderco folder I usually carry.
Posted By: Private Klink

Re: S5 preferred use? - 04/27/09 02:00 PM

I like my Becker Necker as well, but I keep it in the side pocket of my truck.

Re: S5 preferred use? - 04/27/09 02:19 PM

There are times and situations that a folder is the better choice. Given an option , I'll take a fixed blade anyday. I believe in the Blade Trinity...Folder(BM Grptilian) , small FB(BM Snody Resistor) and either my DMDC or Scapper6. On my person, I carry the folder or small FB ,my pack(maxpedition) carry the other. This is my EDC....If going to the field , I'll through on the DF. People say "why so much stuff"?? I live like a scout...be prepared. Hopefully things go good...but ,I'll be the one making it through to the next round...and of course help those who didn't prepare.

I like to add a small folding saw to that mix too, especially when going into the backcountry in places not as well traveled as popular trails.

Re: S5 preferred use? - 04/27/09 04:42 PM

P-Easy you are incorrect about the rusting of sr77 and sr101.

sr101 WILL RUST much quicker than sr77 will. while sr77 is not as rust resistant as INFI, it is much better regarding rust resistance than sr101.

Re: S5 preferred use? - 04/27/09 07:23 PM

Wisconsin and Illinois are the only two states that have a NO CCW law still on the books. Don't know about IL.,but the Governor Of WI. says as long as he is in office it will never happen.

Sooo I am forced by law to wear mine on my hip, belt, neck as long as it is in plain sight of anyone approaching me I am in compliance with the state and local laws. All that in mind I will wear mine a couple days a week in a revolving EDC dress. When I have been EDC'ing The CGDM I find I don't draw it against a slimmer EDC.."I EDC 4 knives" like The Bird or Muk.

So mine will allow the CGDM to be a weekend gardening, farming, prying splitting tool and the Scrapper Five being a scant 3/16 will be a much more versatile EDC for my rotation.

Sandwiches, cutting meat, roasts, vegetables, carpet, picking bugs from baseboards while cleaning, and a myriad of other daily chores.

The added length of the 5 inch over the 4 inch opens avenues of EDC new to me,so all in all I welcome this new slimmer Mutt with my favorite color choices and the best handle the Scrap Yard Knife Company has made to date, the Mudder!

Bring it!

Peace.
