Andy Wayne's Photo Thread - 07/03/09 06:58 AM

Hi guys. Sometimes I only have a few pics that I don't think are worthy of a dedicated thread, so I thought I'd just make this one and add to it in those situations.

Here's a few pics I took today. I thought I'd take an hour to go picking some wild black raspberries for my Mom. I don't like them myself, & she's legally blind & can't really pick them, so I do it for her every year.

My batteries went dead, or I'd of taken more pics. I think I went picking a little late in the season, because there weren't very many berries.

Here's a cornflower AKA Chicory. The dried roasted roots of this plant can be used as a coffee substitute.
[Linked Image from i6.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i6.photobucket.com]

This is an assassin bug that was on the raspberry plants. They use their needle like probe to hunt bugs, stab them, inject them with venom, then suck out their juices. And yes, they can bite people too.
[Linked Image from i6.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i6.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i6.photobucket.com]

Sallie went with me. She's our youngest Weim (< 1 year old) and our only blue.
[Linked Image from i6.photobucket.com]

Wild yellow flowers. I believe it's wood strawberry. The leaves look like weed, don't think it is though.
[Linked Image from i6.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i6.photobucket.com]

This is all I found after an hour of picking.
[Linked Image from i6.photobucket.com]

I used my DFLE (look, it has freckles!) & SS4 to clear weeds and brush out of the way.
[Linked Image from i6.photobucket.com]

I had a much better haul last year...

I don’t believe I ever posted the pics from my Memorial Day cookout, so I’ll go ahead and post them here too.

It had been raining, and the yard was soaking wet. The wood was also soaked, and sitting it wet grass waist high behind the barn. Can I start a fire using only a firesteel & natural materials with wet wood? Let’s find out.

Here you can see my shoes wet from gathering the wood.

Re: Andy Wayne's Photo Thread - 07/03/09 08:14 AM

There should be a Scrap Yard law about teasing us with so many burger shots!

I do not know a living soul who doesn't love a burger from the grill in the backyard. THOSE look fantastic!

God gift to the sences... the Peony! What a wonderful smell and a beautiful flower too! The Iris are gorgeous when early but they wither too soon and become a gooey mass of muck on the stem.

Ten burgers for three people... I must have missed the phone.

Thanks again my dear friend for sharing all these great shots!!!

Peace.

[Linked Image from farm3.static.flickr.com]

I dunno what kind of bird this is, (anyone?) but they’re really tame. It let me get like 2 feet away to take this pic. This is in our garage BTW.
[Linked Image from farm3.static.flickr.com]

This hawk landed in our yard. I know it’s not a great pic, but this is as close as I could get before he flew away. I needed a tripod, it’s a little blurry. I took this pic in the rain while holding an umbrella, hard to hold everything.

GREAT pics! we call those stag beatles 'June Bugs'. Cause they show up every June, and before August is over, one flies into you and knocks you off your bike while youre doing 45 down the road. Those things hit like bullets.

Hmmm...you sure that's the same bug? From what I read, stag beetles are pretty rare to find. I've only come across a couple in my life. Here's a pic of what we call a June Bug here. (not my pic) It's smaller than a stag beetle, and doesn't have the pincers. We have June bugs all over the place here too starting in May or so.

On a related note, have you read of this use for them?

Where on earth did you get a tritium glow tube? I went looking for one a while back, and nobody sold them anymore because they were considered radioactive materials.

(Tritium is a radioactive material in much the same way that a box of matches is bomb-making supplies, IMHO)

Nice picks Andy thanks for sharing. I wish we would get falls like that over here in Texas.

Yeah, I missed that when I went to school in Abilene.

eBay. There's someone that sells them on candlepowerforums too. I bought a glass tritium rod on eBay that's like 4" long. Gotta be careful not to drop it, no plastic coating. I recently saw a tritium exit sign on eBay, some big rods in there.

Is/was yours fairly bright? I know they get darker as they get old and the tritium decays.

Pretty good for as small as they are. My oldest one I've had for nearly 10 years, and it still glows fine. I can almost read in the dark with one if I hold it really close.

If you look at the full size pic, you can even see the little hairs on his leg. My camera is a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W1. It's 5.1 MP & It has a 2.5" LCD screen.

Here's what it looks like:

Here's a couple reviews on this camera:

It films video too. Here's a video I made with it a couple days ago:

Just goes to show you don't need a super expensive camera to take really impressive shots. Great shots!

Thanks. A friend recently said "Wow, good shots, you must have an expensive camera." I said, "That's like telling a cook, "Good meal, you must have expensive pots and pans.""

That is a huge yard. By the time you finish mowing, you have to start again.

Andy, beautiful pics. The trees are starting to turn here too. I am going to try and make it out tomorrow and do a little walk about and see if I can catch some beauty too. Thanks for sharing!

Good so far. Similar to the VG-10. Haven't tried to sharpen it yet though.

Re: Andy Wayne's Photo Thread - 02/05/10 10:56 AM

I took Sallie for a walk to the graveyard near my house. I came across this huge limb that had fallen on a couple 100-150+ year old graves. I thought it was sad that they didn't have any descendants that visited to clear it. I thought their graves looked unloved and forgotten.

I had my Chopweiler with me, so I decided to clear what brush I could, since no one else it seemed cared to.

Not perfect, but better than it was. I would need a chainsaw or something to get the rest. Several hours later now, my arms are still sore from all the chopping.

That’s my house you see in the background in the center.

View of the entrance to the graveyard. Where I was chopping was to the right off the frame.

View up the hill at the graveyard. After chopping I headed up the hill and fixed a few American flags that had fallen into the mud. The ground was pretty frozen, so it was hard to do.

Frozen creek.

View of the edge after all that choppin'. Not bad. A few strops on a ceramic stick and it was razor sharp again.

Good job cleaning up the grave site.Back in NC in the 80s I used to hunt some farm land across from where I lived and I came across a small family grave site. There was only 4or 5 graves.A couple dated in the 1780s.I usually stoped by and checked them out when wandering through.
Thanks for the memories and pics.
