Blade West pics! - 09/11/09 10:11 PM

So I just got back to the office here are some pics I snapped.

There were a lot of nice offerings and SYKCO had some great varients, and they went quick!

I saw this when I parked:

lots of sweet stuff on that table!

Re: Blade West pics! - 09/12/09 12:17 AM

Did they do offerings like they do at BLADE Atlanta, or was everything just on the table?
Posted By: Sethrotull

Re: Blade West pics! - 09/12/09 12:26 AM

Everything was on the table except the BOSS Street. It didn't sound like they were bringing out new stuff each day, what was there is what they had. But I will be back tommorow to see. I might be able to afford a Scrap Yard knife still.

More questions - I'm going nuts here!!!

Any idea what the three knives are, with the rounded butts, near the top left hand of this picture, where all you can see is their handles?

Re: Blade West pics! - 09/12/09 12:43 AM

Not sure, but they were $287

Those appear to be SARsquatches.

They look either like the Tank Buster with the rounded butt:

Or the SARsquatch:

I'm guessing they're SARsquatches

Either $272 or $212 I think $212

Posted By: Sethrotull

Re: Blade West pics! - 09/12/09 02:04 AM

Oh I thought about many of the blades there but so many are very similar and I don't have the money to double up. Every knife I picked up I compared to what I have then compared all of them to the Regulator I had on my hip. Scrap Yard had a few I really wanted and the prices were great but the S5 and S5LE fill so many niches I passed. In the end I got two small blades.

Sweet selection of knives. Looks like a lot more variety than at Blade Atlanta.
Posted By: MustardMan

Re: Blade West pics! - 09/12/09 03:29 AM

Blade Atlanta had a great variety of the Custom Shop type offerings - but they were pricey. They had a pretty good number of more standard stuff too, but it was mostly more recent stuff. I didn't see near as much of the really cool old school stuff there.

Re: Blade West pics! - 09/12/09 04:17 AM

yeah, a CG Sar8 would be cool.

Looks like they had CG M9's at blade west, so maybe that will happen.

It sucks you can only get rare stuff like that at the shows.

The little ones were "bear cub" hacks; I recall that Jerry calls those "railroad spikes". I think they're more like a scalpel, and quite comfortable in my hand -- if they'd had Busse Combat rather than HACK on the blade, I think I'd have picked up at least one at the last Knob Creek. However, they had SAR-5s for only slightly more, so I bought another of them instead.

I'm jealous M.M. yes I am. I told myself i wanna gonna go last year to blade west, and thing come up and here i still am, still wanting
Posted By: MustardMan

Re: Blade West pics! - 09/13/09 02:06 AM

I thought the HACKS at Blade Atlanta were pretty overpriced for what they were. Stuff like the High Street was a better value. They were pretty neat little shapes, but for a couple bucks more I could get a lot more substantial knives.
Posted By: fastcamo

Re: Blade West pics! - 09/13/09 02:08 AM

Well the 4th one over from the skinner, if that's a hack, that's the one i WANT quite badly, quite very badly, and then the pork belly just badly...

Re: Blade West pics! - 09/13/09 04:42 PM

The big news to me is the M9CG. A heavier saber ground M9 should make one heck of a chopper.
Posted By: fastcamo

Re: Blade West pics! - 09/13/09 04:49 PM

Yea but that LE does cut pretty sweet, of course I've only hit pine with it, did you catch how much the CG was going for?
Posted By: MustardMan

Re: Blade West pics! - 09/13/09 04:50 PM

Yeah the m9cg was a big surprise to me. I wonder if they will do a production run soon. I don't think I'd go for it - too close to the m9le, and I've got the DDF for a saber ground chopper, with the bonus of res-c handles.

Still, the m9cg is a fine looking blade, and for someone without any SR-101 in that size, it's a no brainer. I wonder if it's differentially tempered. I would assume it is.
Posted By: Horn Dog

Re: Blade West pics! - 09/13/09 04:57 PM

Well I certainly have no need for any of them. But if the price is right, I could go for a CG. The recent Busse Combats have just gotten out of the price range of this old man. $400 for a 4" knife? Gimme a break.

Fair arguement. I have the M9LE, DFLE, Battle Rat, NMSFNO, NMFBM, FSH, Chopweiler, Camp Tramp, Yard Guard, etc. so I am personally pretty well covered for choppers. But, those who don't have the M9LE....

I would assume the M9CG is differentially tempered.

I will have to wait and see on the M9CG. Right now I would have to pass. So, I hope I don't have to decide soon. But, I don't "need" it.

If they beef the tip up a bit and offer micarta (I would bet micarta is an option on CG), then "IF" finances are available, I might have to consider.
The saber grind might offer more power, but the full height grind sure feels and balances VERY nicely. Tough call.

But, BIG +1 on certain recent Busse pricings. Satin knives are what I "WANT" and Busse satin blades are just WAY too high. I can buy satin from most every other knife maker for WAY less.

Coated CG blades are NOT cheap either and if I have to do SO MUCH work to make them satin, it is hard for me to buy Busse CG's either. So, like you, the knife design has to be VERY special and a good price even for a CG for me to justify the work and time to make a CG into a "nice" and worthy knife.

Re: Blade West pics! - 09/14/09 01:25 AM

I just checked the moss DF I got. It is full flat and it is thinner to start with. Much lighter knife than my original CGDF.
Someone said the CG saber M9 was also thinner, but I am not sure. I held an M9CG for about an hour but I have never held an M9LE.

I wouldn't be surprised if they tweaked the dimensions a bit - the saber grind on the DDF is seems lower than the one on the original DFCG, for example.

from my experience, saber grinds all vary slightly, my 3 SODs had different heights for saber grinds.

I can understand that. But would it be possible for two full flat ground knives with exactly the same blade width, blade length, blade thickness and blade shape to be different dimensionally? That doesn't make sense to me.

I'm saying that there's no reason to automatically believe they have the same blade thickness. At least one person has reported that his seemed thinner, although that's just anecdotal at this point.

I don't think it's all that likely that they actually ARE thinner, but it would sure be cool if they were. It's not all that difficult to stick a different thickness of stock into a CNC machine.

Re: Blade West pics! - 09/14/09 03:32 AM

The last ganza , I had one DDF almost identical to my grey, and the other mic'd in at .277 with a different grind, and noticablely heavier in the hand

Re: Blade West pics! - 09/14/09 03:41 AM

I'm hoping the CGM9 will have micarta just to keep the price down some. I'm a g10 fan but I kinda feel like micarta wouldn't have slipped out of my hand he way the g10 did. Either way I really liking the M9 for the way it feels like a smaller and faster knife than it's size.
