Okay, not sure if this has been posted before or not but there are lots of new SY users here so I thought I would ask....
What do you consider your most useful SY knife?
For me its either my S5 or my DM (scrap Muk would be close behind these). Lets here it.

For me the SS4 would be 1st with the S5LE a close second.
It's still my DFLE for me!

BDLE with the Muk right in there behind it . I even carry the BDLE as a protection blade- is a nasty lil cutter/slicer - great knife

my most often used is the BDLE.

Re: Most useful SY - 10/14/09 04:38 PM
first my DumpsterMutt because it's so tough and easy to carry (I think I trust it for just about anything!)
then my DogfatherCG because it's just tough! (and my buddy Tom named it! )
their are lots of great beater/user blades out there but pair that with res-c handles to absorb the shock and you've got a winner!

well, i only own two SY, but i would say my most useful is my S5

Re: Most useful SY - 10/14/09 04:51 PM
I think the SS4 and BD are quite useful for most cutting chores. The S5 is seeing a lot of use lately, too.

By far my Scrap Muk is my most used knife. I use it the kitchen daily. Last night it cut chicken and then was a ice cream scoop for some hard rockyroad.

The Regulator...but then I'm a test teamer! Here in the Florida outback (my 1.5 acres) I use my DogFatherCG A LOT!

Re: Most useful SY - 10/14/09 07:00 PM
Excellent responses so far and about what I expected. I know the DM is a tough little knife - I used it to baton through some hard oak on my trip to the Smokies and it did it nicely. I definitely think, for me, that a small to medium sized blade is what I will get the most use out of. So far, the DM is serving that role perfectly. Not too big and not too small and tough as heck.
Lazi- I hope you washed the muk blade well between the chicken and the ice cream

Chicken ice cream, hmmm... an al la king sort of dish in whipped soft-serve frozen cream... that might actually work.
I like all of my Scrap Yards, but don't live/work in an environment conducive to fixed-blade carry, so haven't actually used them.

The Scrap Muk is my most used knife, especially for cutting meat and veggies. Though that may change once I start bringing the S5 LE on some hikes.

Original Dumpster Mutt and DFCG are my two most used blades.

yup... my muk is also the most washed item in my kitchen. This is also why I wanted a sheath that coould easily be flushed out.

Re: Most useful SY - 10/15/09 01:13 AM
The S5 is rapidly catching up to the Regulator for me. Just easier to carry. If not carried, my Regulator is always at least accompanying me in the car, just in case.
But, my favorite is my desert DF!!!!

Original Dumpster Mutt and DFCG are my two most used blades.
Both classics and heavy users of mine too, I find myself picking up the 5
a lot more but I tend to reach for anything near by
Dan
I'm going to say the S5. Perhaps I'm still infatuated with it, but it really is the knife I've been using the most. After that I'll say my Muk, then BDLE
Although with colder weather upon us, I'll probably be doing more batoning and chopping of firewood, so my DFGC will be out of the sheath more in the next few months.
these questions drive me nuts though....it's like asking me what my favorite beer is. A: The one I'm drinking at the moment

I will have to go with one I do not yet own, though have ordered, a S5 Le. I have a S5 Cg, had two, sold one so I could purchase an Le. I hope INFI is worth it. From the stellar reports, I believe it will be.

although i didn't call it the most useful, it's definitely my favorite scrapper and i don't see how dan can top it.
yes, that is a challenge. prove me wrong.

Dogfather(s)...
my newest is the desert DF and I expect a lot of use. My CG has the most use because I've had it the longest. Although, the LE has gotten a bunch too. I really love the lighter weight of the LE but I really appreciate the extra punch of the CG and desert. I don't have any smaller scrapyards but I would imagine if I had a SOD I would use that even more. With the great finger choil on the DF I use it a lot as a small knife too.

Where's the love for the S6CG? It's still my favorite and gets used the most. I did finally get my S5LE in yesterday though, so we'll see if the S6 stays #1.

Re: Most useful SY - 10/16/09 07:01 PM
I like the S6 but I find it too large for some tasks and too small for others...
The S5, DM, Muk and other smaller knives work better for me. And if I need something bigger then I would go with the SOD - But i DO love the S6 still.

Re: Most useful SY - 10/17/09 12:04 AM
I'm really liking the S5LE. Just light enough to carry for ED needs, but just big enough to do some heavier survival tasks. In a pinch I think that blade could handle anything thrown at it, maybe not perfectly, but very well. An exceptionally versatile design.

Dumpster Mutt!
I find myself grabbing more the the S5LE however.
I love all my Scrap Yard knives

this is a no brainer for me! my SOD! its been seeing more andmore belt time at work! i use it to put a spike on our tree stakes, trim palms, cut cordage,de-spike pokey palm fronds, and keep fussy clients at bay!

Re: Most useful SY - 10/17/09 05:09 PM
I received my s5 Le yesterday. Its nice looking and seems plenty thick enough to do whatever I might ever call upon it to do. I owned a DF Cg for about a week and sold it off, that knife is really a bit too big for my house or anything I might use it for in my suburban lawn. I think the only thing I might use more often would be a Scrap Yard folder (lol) or possibly the skelescrappper if it gets made.

Re: Most useful SY - 10/18/09 05:28 PM
I have my S5LE in my "bum bag" which I use on short runs and walks...I keep it and a gortex bivi bag in there incase I broke an ankle or whatever and needed to sit and wait for help...Heather cut for a kip mat works well as insulation from the ground...whistle/torch/first aid kit etc...
Longer walks I carry a Rucksack with better equipment to stay out...the Bumb Bag though works well enough and is light enough to carry when fell running.
So the S5LE gets carried a lot...
My DFLE suffers from it's Infi big brother...my NMFBM...this claims the Lion's share of chopping work in my garden or going in my Bergan when off with the Army...the main thing with the NMFBM is it fit's in an "issue" Golok sheath and never gets "noticed" for what it is...plus it is just that bit more effective. My Ghetto Satin/worn off D/C finish has little "envious" looks...I just say it is a "cheapo" machete if asked which holds an edge better than the Golok...easily believed when you see some of the other guys Goloks LOL...sharpening is still a black art to most Soldiers....this saves it getting pinched or reported as "the wrong image" type of kit...and you grow attached to something which simply works so well. To be fair those two knives are all I really need.
Right now I am going through a "minimalist" phase...have been for a while...I think I just have too much money tied up in kit which is'nt getting used...but what does get picked up get's used a fair bit. The S5LE though is a great knife and will at least enable me to say I prize a SY knife over all other Busse comparables...and I do love the DFLE...it's just that my NMFBM has become my "work horse"...BUT ...so has the S5LE. It is a wonderful little knife

Re: Most useful SY - 10/19/09 03:06 PM
I'd say the SOD is pretty high on my list too. Fire building this weekend with some very wet, still green wood was made a lot easier with the SOD. Long enough to baton, short enough for detail work and fuzz sticks, and with the res-c handle a lot easier to carry than any of my equivalently sized busse knives.
I almost sold the SOD but this weekend has convinced me to hang onto it - at least until a bama clay version makes an appearance at one of the shows

I vote S5cg, it got a bit of belt time while i was downrange. Though i dont really have anything to compare it to as far as long term use goes, it handily did everything asked of it.
