Regulator News - 12/07/09 06:54 PM

Dogs; I will be providing an update on the status of the Regulator in the very near future. The test team has done an amazing job of providing feedback and I would like to thank them for their unrelenting work to help us reach this point.

The announcement will provide a unique offer that should more than please the Yard.

Re: Regulator News - 12/09/09 01:32 AM

I'm new to the Yard so please explain, when the knife is offered is it limited to a specific number of knives in the production run or, is the production based on the orders received? What I am trying to understand is there going to be a rush for the knives and some will and some won't get knives or will all who want a knife be able to purchase it?

Re: Regulator News - 12/09/09 02:33 AM

If you aren't sure where you will be living when the knives ship, it's best to use the "print and call" option, and put other possible ways to contact you in the "special instructions" box. That way, when your knife is ready to ship, they will contact you first, and you can update your mailing address, etc.

This might actually suck. I'll be moving twice in the next 3 months for business.
Might have to get someone to hold them for me if the come out before March.
You could do as MM suggested or you could sent to a friend for holding and shipping when you are ready. I have done that for a friend before--sure was nice having a couple of the blades in my possession but hurt when I had to send him his <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" />

Could someone help give me some reasons why I need to buy this knife so I can pass it on to my wife. I don't know if I will be convincing saying....I have to have it....or I can knock down trees with the massive chunk of premium steel. What will this industrial duty beast excel at?

It's an amazing piece of craftsmanship that will be able to perform a wide variety of tasks, and will last not only your lifetime, but can be passed down for generations to come. You're buying a family heirloom..

Try my approach......."cause I will love you even more honey,if that is possible, if i can just get this one knife"

... it may not work for you but it is better than..."cause I needs it" <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Good ideas fellas! I can have it....I do need it....I will have what I need. You married fellas know we get what we want, but it does not hurt the "peace" in the household if the little woman goes along with it without a bunch of grumbling and hastles. I like the heirloom idea, the collectors value/appreciation, and "I love you more and more baby, you are so understanding and supportive of my knife collecting". It's all good!

I'm expecting both the Regulator and Sar-8 announcements to be made next week. Eric has hinted that Swamp Rat has an upcoming model planned, but I'd be shocked to see any real announcements about that before 2010.

If Eric has a bushwacker type knife, I'm going to be upset having already ordered a Bushwaker from Busse. Other than the Bushwacker Mistress, I have preferred the recent Swamp Rats to the Busses. I especially prefer the prices. As much as I like Scrappers, I think I have as many Swamp Rats. Now if Dan releases some awesome thin machete-like chopper, you know I'm in for that. As for the Regulator, I see that more as a fighter than a chopper.
Posted By: MustardMan

Re: Regulator News - 12/12/09 08:57 PM

I wouldn't worry too much - I expect the bushwacker to be in high demand after the orders close. You shouldn't have too much trouble selling it off.

I doubt it'll suffer from the same issues the zilla has, as far as resale.

Re: Regulator News - 12/12/09 09:15 PM

Not only that, there were quite a few people who stocked up on zillas with the intent of re-selling them at a profit, and who are now stuck with them because no one wants them.

I wish I could get rid of mine, since I actually used it and decided it wasn't for me, but with such a glut of them on the market due to all the flippers, I'm thinking of sending it in to Garth to get some mods done, the blade thinned out, and who knows what else. If I'm stuck with the blade, might as well make it useful.

What I'd like to know is whether Boss Dog uses "soon" and "very near future" the same way at home as he does here in The Yard. If he does, Patti has to be a real study in patience! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif" alt="" />

An anorexic, no-choil BOSS street would be just about the perfect do-most-things knife.

Of course, this is Busse, so the choil is gonna stay, and anorexic is doubtful.

The taper on the surface grind is excellent. The Regulator is a surprisingly fast blade for as thick as it is.

Quote
the specs and what people say about them don't jibe in my mind..so thick and everyone says it handles and cuts so well...interestingly designed blade!

I am generally a fan of thinner knives, as I've stated many times in the past, and yet I love the regulator, which is the second fattest blade I own. Why? Because the regulator is a fat knife done right. Just a few reasons...

-Full flat grind. When I see a big convex primary grind on a thick blade (think killa zilla), I facepalm. The knife is thick enough already, no need to push more material near the edge to ruin cutting performance. The same goes for saber grinds too, to a lesser extent. Full flat saves you weight and makes the blade a better slicer for its thickness. Unlike something like a hollow grind, however, the full flat grind is still a capable chopper and is great for batoning to split wood.

-Narrow blade profile. The blade isn't super broad (compare to, say, the Steel Heart series from Busse), and so again that cuts down on the weight significantly. In one sense, this detracts from the cutting ability, since it forces you to have a steeper grind to maintain the thickness at the spine, where a broader blade would be able to have a more shallow grind. However, on a knife this length, saving the weight is important too, so this is a good compromise IMHO. The narrow profile combined with the full flat grind also makes an outstanding splitting wedge for batoning, because it has less surface area to create friction with the logs, but lots of wedging action to force them apart.

- long clip with a tapered point. This might be the least appreciated but most beneficial part of the regulator's design. Not only doe the clip start about halfway down the blade, much earlier than many bowies, but this leads to what is effectively a taper as you approach the tip. That means that the area of the blade near the tip is quite a bit thinner than the spine at the ricasso, creating a knife that is a surprisingly good slicer when using the tip, and is also phenomenal for detailed tip work. Still, this long taper doesn't take the knife to a crazy level of thinness, so the point remains very robust, and effective for prying, drilling, and other aggressive tip work.

-Large handle with a hidden tang. This further reduces weight, and when combined with the weight dropped at the long clip point, leads to a well balanced knife. Since the handle is slightly more than a hand long, you can grab closer to the butt for chopping, to get an effectively blade heavy balance, or you can put your hand right up against the guard for detail work, ending up with a much more neutral balance. The choil isn't the most comfortable one in the world, but you can gain even further control by choking up on it for really detailed work.

The regulator has gotten such praise for good reason - it is a phenomenal hard-use all around knife. While some would disagree, I would say the Regulator is one of the most capable camp / woods / survival blades ever put out by the Yard. It is nearly the equal of the Son of Dogfather in terms of chopping and batoning, and FAR EXCEEDS the performance of the SoD in versatility for tip work and similar needs.

It looks like a fighter, it feels like a fighter, but don't let that fool you. The Regulator is a supremely well crafted survival knife that takes on all the usual survival tasks easily, while also having a few more tricks up its sleeve.

Re: Regulator News - 01/08/10 06:42 PM

At first I didn't like the look of the Regulator but the more I look at it, the more it grows on me.

I don't tend to clip points or Bowie blades because the tip is often upswept too much for me. Looking at this, the tip is really not anymore upswept than a S5 or many other non-Bowie blades. I like a point fairly centered. I am not skinning any deer so I don't need a skinning blade.

I think I like it. There is a reason this basic design has been around as long as America has been around, it is a good design. It is the most American of knife designs as well so I guess everyone should own one.

I wish I could handle it before I decided. I have learned that many knife look perfect on paper but once you pick them up, something comes to light that you didn't expect. Knives are very personal items and they should fit you like they were made for you. Scrapyard has done an amazing job with it's handles. Every SY knife I have picked up had a good handle. Some didn't do it for me for various reasons but they all had great handles. This looks like another good handle. Basic and comfortable in all grips and tasks.

I am hoping for SR-77 myself (SR-77 has always seemed to me the essential "yard" steel). All of my favorite SYKCO blades before the Reg (namely the Dogfather LE, Yardhook, Dumpstermutt (LE&CG), and Yardkeeper (LE&CG)) have all been made of SR-77... Add that to the fact that some of my favorite non-Bussekin blades are also made of S7, and i have a strong preference in that direction. Besides, i just wanted to be the first to represent the SR-77 contingent - it was just a matter of time since INFI and "...a differential and sub-zero treated..." steel have already been tossed into the wishing well. Although i think most would agree they won't be disappointed so long as it doesn't turn out to be made of marsmallow nougat... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/barf.gif" alt="" />

Re: Regulator News - 01/23/10 07:29 PM

That's phenominal - It sounds like this will be quite a few people's first Scrapyard knife! What a fantastic introduction to SYKCO. Talk about baptism by fire! I can't wait to hear reactions to what has become my favorite knife i have ever owned, up there with other Scrapyard monuments like the S6LE, Yardhook, Yardkeeper (both Le & CG), and the unfortunately named Dumpster Mutt, a knife that is ever close at hand. What great, great knives. No doubt the Regulator will vastly exceed everyones' loftiest expectations. Welcome to all who do not yet own Scrapyards - may the Reg be your first of many. I wish i could look ahead a couple hundred years to see SY knives still in use, to see whether they required rehandling, or if Res-C proves to have as much longevity as is does strength and comfort... By then they may have Reseprine-H, Handle material made of metals found on the moons of Saturn that are stronger than Titanium and feel like flower petals and are lighter than air...
Anyway, a hearty welcome. Let us all know everything about your first reactions to your first Scrapyards. Why, it reminds me when i was just a wee one, back in ought-six, when the old Scrapper6LE first hit - well, i was so eager for a production knife make of (modified) S7 i bought one from someone who had bought one at the Blade show, lacking the patience to wait until their actual release (at which time i bought another one to give to my best friend...) Yep, i still have that S6 with its zero edge -- it came with a sort of a convex edge, a nice, thick "working" edge, just shrp enough to call an edge but thick enough to take any kind of beating -- well, i thinned it out some, being as i had no plans to use it as a jack-hammer blade (although i'm sure it could handle it in a pinch!)...

As DeNiro said in Raging Bull "I got hands like a little girl". Not quite, but my hands are smaller than average for a guy, and they seem about equal to the above-average female hands that i have had the pleasure of holding. And before the jokes start i have size 13 shoes, just to avert any adult comedy. Not that it would be allowed on this forum anyway... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/footinmouth.gif" alt="" />

Before i dig myself any deeper, let me just say that the Regulator handle fits my hands PERFECTLY, and my glove size is "small", sometimes "medium" depending on the type. It's absolutely my favorite handle on any knife i own, which previously would have been the Cold Steel Recon Scout and Trailmaster handles, as well as the Busse Basic and the other Res-C handles from Bussekin knives (i think there's a smaller and a larger size Res-C, but i don't notice the dfference between the two during use).
And i do find some handles too large for me, such as the Becker handles (which is unfortunate - i like the knives), KaBar Heavy Bowie handles (way too big for me) and a custom Ranger where the original owner requested 3/8" thick slabs (i mean scales - no, i mean slabs). I can hold those fat handles, but they are not as comfortable and secure as most knives are for me.
The thing about the Regulator handle is that its hour-glass shape is kind of like the aforementioned Cold Steel handles, which come to think of it are sort of the opposite of most coke-bottle shaped handles. Instead of the status quo, the Reg handle is thinnest where the hand naturally fits, and the flared ends seem to "lock" the hand in. Add to that the naturally grippy texture of Res-C making for a very, VERY secure grip. And very intuitive and sensible, even though it's very unusual. This kind of thing is what i love most about Bussekin knives is that they don't seem to have any problem completely changing things, taking design risks to improve function.
So there's just one opinion from a small-handed dude. I hope that helps some. Enjoy...

Re: Regulator News - 01/24/10 07:17 AM

If anyone has ever felt that the handle on a baseball bat was too fat then a Regulator is not for you.

My point is, anyone can handle a baseball bat. The handle size on a bat stays the same, only the weight changes (for adults). I have fairly small but robust hands (sausage fingers) and the Regulator fits me perfectly no matter how I hold it.

Even the Magilla Gorilla types and anyone just short of a small child should have no problem handling a Regulator. Don't miss out on this one.

I seriously check this topic 20x a day. I have never owned a bussekin knife before. My old roommate is a Busse addict and told me to check out the yard. Can't wait to get my hands on my first of many.

Your old roommate was a Busse addict? I hate to say it, but it sounds like the first step is admitting you have a problem yourself mate! lol

I just hope it's sharper than the last of the S5le's.
Quite a few dogs commented on the dull edges on the last couple of batches.
It's not worth it to ship it back like some suggested.
A little elbow grease on the diamond blocks got it sharp.
Shouldn't have to diy though ya know what I mean Vern.
I mean # 86?

Agree - it looks out of balance from a purely aesthetic perspective. However, seems most of the test team really like the way it performs and feels - and that is what counts.

I like the way it looks too. I LOVE the way it performs! The only negative thing I have to say about the Regulator is that the handle seems to be disproportionately large in comparison to the blade. If Dan makes the handle smaller then it would make it less comfortable and the knife would not perform as well.

The only solution I can see is to make the blade about 2 inches longer. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crossfingers.gif" alt="" />

Re: Regulator News - 01/28/10 11:47 PM

I can't say I'm as passionate as Bruce on the subject, I will say that I'd feel bad taking advantage of some "perk" when I didn't use the Reg I bought.

It was my choice, and the honest answer is that it had nothing to do with wanting to keep it nice. I could go into detail, but I'll say that I took the Reg on several outings with other people who weren't keen on waiting around for me to beat it up. It was my bad, I know it, but when winter rolled around it made it harder to go out. Plus, I live in a condo, which made it tough to even go in my backyard and hack up some trees.

Anyway, no excuses, I didn't use it and here we are. Like I said, if Dan offer's a discount for the Test Team I'll congratulate those that put in the effort and hard work, with no hard feelings. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Re: Regulator News - 01/29/10 12:06 AM

The few suggestions that I made were all based on using it as an EDC at work during commercial renovations and general campsite use. I can't say as I did anything too over the top with it or anything that would really damage it. For my purposes, that was test enough since that is what the final version that I buy will be used for.
Posted By: Joe Fowler

Re: Regulator News - 01/29/10 01:25 AM

So, I guess I did test it then, to a certain extent.

Wait, I didn't email Dan with my findings though.

Perhaps a discount percentage determined by the amount of damage done to the As thick as my Reg. sheath is, it may qualify as a safe.

There are no hard feelings, no need for an excuse or an apology of any sort. The offer to sell a knife is my business. Those that bought knives...THANK YOU. This simple act allowed us to do something with a knife design that we would not have been able to do...THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU...I hope I'm clear on this...PM me if you are not

Second, for those Dogs who handled, worked over, beat or just looked at their knives and sent in feedback...equally THANK You.

Obviously I could not incorporate all the requested changes but through careful evaluation and maintaining the Performance to Price Ratio I think the new version of the knife is going to be a hit. By the way I did incorporate a huge amount of the feedback in design and production as well...very cool stuff

If it is coming from the Scrap Yard, it HAS to be cool! As amazing as the TT Reg. is, this has got to be the best field knife ever.

I'm anxious to see the revamped regulator. I really need a good usable field knife. That can take some abuse. From what I have seen from the test model if this one is improved it should fit the bill.

That's great - your EDC is a Regulator! I wish i didn't live in a big city (or that i lived in AZ - it's like the old west, people go grocery shopping with a .45 on their hip...). If i walked around town with a Regulator the popo would beat me to a pulp with tonfas and throw me in the bing for being a terrorist... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
It would be a fantastic EDC though - not too big to carry comfortably, but big enough for most tasks... I carry either the Dumpstermutt or the Yardkeeper LE - I find i can carry them inconspicuously with the right sheath - but it's a compromise - i'd rather carry a Reg - it has become my favorite knife.
Which brings me to the realization - i have always ducked the whole "favorite knife" issue, because there are SO many great knives -- but i can say now with authority, the Regulator is my favorite blade. And of course i just have a TT Version that i bought from one of the original test team members - I can only guess what the production design will do to me - probably ruin me for any other knife. Bussekin blades have already ruined my appreciation for all but the best hand-made and mid-tech blades out there...

For what it's worth, I am diametrically opposed to rewarding test team members who did not test their Regulators. The fact that they were able to buy their safe queens for $129.95 is reward enough for them. Only test team members who actually provided feedback to you should be rewarded.
Come on, man! Just because I couldn't come up with anything to improve upon for feedback doesn't mean mine is a safe queen. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Italy has rules about what is acceptable to be imported. Weapons are forbidden. A shipper can fill out the paperwork deceptively, but risks losing the item, if confiscated at customs. The buyer, who generally prepays for the item, is also unhappy if the item is seized. E-bay sellers generally refuse to ship knives to Italy.

You're right about weapons inportation, BUT knives are not considered weapons here in Italy, EXCEPT if the double edges (as a dagger i.e.). So, not a problem to buy knives in USA, in fact I buyed a lot of my knives in USA without any problems.

No hard feelings here. From what I figured out is that some bought more than one to mess with and safe queen. I know I saw some being sold on the secondary market and figured that none of them were tested out--just the way it is.

Re: Regulator News - 01/30/10 06:19 AM

I tested the heck out of one, and then let a spare go on the secondary market, primarily to pay some unexpected bills. Now that I've seen the new version, I am sort of wishing I'd held onto the second one - I liked the full flat grind on the test team version A LOT.

+1. I like the grind on my DFLE WAYmore than the DFCG, and that's coming from someone who generally prefers heavier, saber-ground blades (e.g. I prefer my first-run Ranger RD6 saber-grind to the later full flat ground version)...
But on big blades, i LOVE the FBMLE (full flat), but found the saber-ground FFBM too blade-heavy, clumsy even. On smaller knives like the Dumpstermutt i find the saber-grind perfection itself, but still love the flat-ground LE and DC versions. Do you Doggs think that geometry becomes more critical as blade-size increases? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

With a blade long enough to become blade heavy in a full flat, a saber grind shifts even more weight to the blade end. Usually that makes more of a dedicated chopper, and less of a well-balanced all-around knife. I'm not a fan of saber grinds on large knives. Furthermore, saber grinds aren't very good for batoning - the harsh corner at the transition from flat to saber grind is more likely to bind up in the wood, and that's also the first place your coating will wear. If you want to beef up a large knife, a convex primary grind is the way to go, IMHO - shifts the weight out like a saber grind, but no harsh corner to bind up. Of course, convex grinds are labor intensive to do, which is why you see lots of them on Busse's and few of them on Scrap Yards.

In smaller knives, I'm still not in love with the saber, but it does have its benefits, especially on thin knives that could use some beefing up, or knives short enough that the saber grind helps improve the balance. That is ESPECIALLY true for Busse blades, with their full tangs and micarta/g10 handles, which can tend to be blade heavy. It works on other blades too - the Scrapper 5's saber grind gives it a very slightly blade heavy balance, which is far superior to a handle heavy balance for an actual user knife, IMO.

On mid-sized knives, like a Dumpster Mutt or SJTAC, a saber grind can make the difference between an all-arounder that can chop a bit and one that you really wouldn't want to use for chopping. Given the choice, I'd probably prefer my smooth bolt SJTAC to have a full flat grind, since it's already a pretty heavy knife, but the saber grind does make it a pretty respectable chopper for the length.

In general, I dislike saber grinds, but there are some knives that I own and like despite their saber grinds. On the flip side, I got rid of my Desert Dogfather very quickly, because I didn't like the saber grind on that one at all.

Re: Regulator News - 01/30/10 06:13 PM

If you have thinner stock and use a saber grind, then you can still end up with the same grind angle. The blade will be lighter but the overall thickness of the blade will make it a less effective log splitter.

Re: Regulator News - 01/30/10 06:20 PM

I see your point. It shouldn't be an issue. It should make for a great all around user.

I don't see the Reg as a log splitter either. I was just pointing out the only major drawback of a saber grind to a full flat grind, that's all.

Please forgive me, I'm not trying to insult anyone's intelligence.

Re: Regulator News - 01/30/10 06:41 PM

Seems that if the knife was designed for poking and prying, it would be made out of sr77 instead of sr101...

Even when the 101 differentially tempered, I'd still hand lateral strength to 77.

IMO
Posted By: Spider-Pig

Re: Regulator News - 01/30/10 06:45 PM

I'm no longer in the line of work where I can properly field my Regulator as a fighter (not saying that I would have actually fought with it, but I'm far less likely to now), but I have found that it makes an excellent log splitter. It's only shortcoming as a log splitter is it's blade length. I only have one knife that's better at splitting logs and that's my DF.

Re: Regulator News - 01/30/10 07:12 PM

I really like the way the release Reg looks too, and if I didn't already have the TT version I would be sure to get the new one. I really have one, maybe two knives for each respective purpose. I find that if I end up with more than one chopper or utility knife then I usually get rid of the one that gets less use. I just give it to family member, that way I still get to see it.

I can see how collecting can get addicting, though. I'm a fan of Scrap Yard knives, but I can't call myself a collector. And thank God for that, I can't afford it and my wife would take one of my knives and kill me with it, then sell them all.

Everybody is different and at different places in their life. Most of you guys know way more about knives than I can ever dream of. I do this for pleasure and have made great friends on this board and a couple of others <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />. I have a decent knife budget that is probably subatancial to some- but I am 58 yaers old- own a business and am semi retired. I am now building a collection of sharpening tools- sander- wheels- stones etc and am thinking of having a shop added to my home just to mess about when I a here <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />. This is what makes this place so great. We have guys from all walks of life that have a common interest. No matter how much $$$- age or otherwise. We all love knives and really enjoy discussing. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> It is a pure pleasure to share with you guys whether you have one knife- or a thousand <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. Re: Regulator News - 01/30/10 08:58 PM

This is one of the best discussions i have ever seen on any knife forum anywhere. I for one never really thought about what a complex relationship there is (given something simple like a knife) between strength of material (especially if it's zone-hardened), weight, thickness, & width of the blade, saber vs. full flat vs. convex grinds, cost, and function performing simple tasks like prying, penetrating, splitting, etc. Remarkable how different these two very similar knives are turning out to be, and the strength of everyone's preferences so far as each attribute of the knife is concerned... I wouldn't want to be Dan, lol. But seriously, there's a helluvalot more that goes into knife design (that has major effects on performance & purpose) than i ever really considered. And i think about knives all the time! Crazy. Thanks everyone for all the simple yet astute observations from experience - very, very interesting!!! The only thing that is clear is that i have to have one of each - a fatter, flat TT for slicing and splitting, etc, and a saber, through-hardened one for prying & slashing, etc...

I still find myself hoping for 1/3" Thickness on the new model - it seems like a little more blade weight would be a good thing (it seems it would assist chopping, where you are creating a notch, and binding is less of an issue). Without making the blade wider or thicker (3/8"???), the saber-grind should enhance chopping power, right? And it still won't be a wrist-breaker, by any means. Plus enhanced lateral strength? I'm thinking the saber grind might be a smart move! The only drawback seems to be that it would bind more splitting or slicing hard materials, with the added loss of blade-coating (which many people remove). Does that seem accurate? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

I've been monitoring the BF Exchange, but haven't seen many bargains lately. Perhaps I'm just being too critical, but I'm seeing things in the $500+ range that I don't like better than a BWM. I'm on a new credit card billing cycle, so ready for new knives, but my second order of three more BWMs last month will drain most of my checking account reserves. I don't know whether to be excited or not about the news that undisclosed steel will be coming out of BC -- I need to see it to know. The RMD, HRLM, RS(II?) news has perked my ears, and of course Dan's due to make an announcement too, so I expect there'll be plenty of product to choose from all too soon.

Does make you wonder, doesn't it? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Someone suggested that Dan might have posted a pic and only part of the specs to elicit feedback before finalizing the design. If Dan incorporates some of changes that have been recommended here such as reinforcing the guard, for instance, the Regulator may have to go back to the drawing board before it gets released. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

That would be fiendishly clever... And probably - worth the wait. Blech. The thought of waiting is almost more than i can bear... and with all the different opinions, it would have to be a knife with a grind that could be switched from saber to flat, with a removable steel guard, and a blade that could slide a couple inches into the handle to expose a choil or have the blade go all the way to the guard, and that way it could have a 7"-9" blade (maybe on a spring, so that the blade gets longer and more tip-heavy when chopping (i get a % if anyone actually perfects that)... I guess i'm wondering, have we really given him any further useful suggestions beyond what the Test Team gave? Not saying we haven't, just wondering "aloud"... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

I'd much rather wait and get a knife with a fixed guard, than have the current version released. Unless there's metal hidden inside that guard, which I doubt....

The other specs are less important to me, even though I strongly dislike the saber grind, but the weak guard is just terrible. Not at all what I want out of knives that are marketed as hard use.

My concern is how much the reinforced guard would cost to incorporate. Lord knows the Battle Guard was far more expensive than the Battle Rat. It would certainly be easier and far less costly to simply remove the top quillion. If it's not there, it can't get damaged. Case in point . . .

Re: Regulator News - 02/04/10 11:16 PM

There has to be a base percentage set for profit. I'm sure Dan is working hard to ensure that the final numbers will satisfy his people as well as the hard use knife community. If the knife in the pic is the new Regulator in its final form then I for one would love to own it. I may favor my TT Edition for a camp knife but from what I can tell, there hasn't been a Yard knife yet that hasn't had 1,000&1 uses. If batonning is limited, fine by me. I own choppers.
I can go either way on the choil issue. I like some with it and some without it. Either way we ALL know it will be one BADA## knife. It doesn't have to be everyone's ideal (noone has made that knife yet) but [censored] if it isn't close. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Where all the Regulators at?

I have not forgotten about the Regulator...in fact that is all I think of and work everyday. I ran into a challenge that I needed to address in order to hit the price point I wanted for you Dogs. Sometime this week I should have it covered (keep your fingers crossed) and bring you the offer.

Please hang in there and be careful of the wild speculation since you really do not have all the facts. There are newer Dogs sending me PM's with some very strange questions tied to the speculations. Once I have the manufacturing process completed I will share the details <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/2weeks.gif" alt="" />

I know there's a time vortex at the SYKCO manufacturing plant that causes a two week delay on outgoing messages so that the time-line is not inadvertantly altered - but why do i have to quit shaving until the Regulator is released? I tried to explain the whole thing to my wife and now she's staying with her sister. I LOVE the Regulator as-is by the way - the high-saber grind and 1/3" spine is just what the doctor ordered... Peace!

P.s. I have heard that the order of the Hog, Rat, and Dog are actually three intergalactic alien forces that have come to earth to supply the world with knives which correspond to whichever branch of the holy trinity a person is most closely aligned so that on the day of the apocalypse, we will have the survival tool that best suits our needs. Can you guys really see the future?
Thanks for the SWEET knives, especially the Regulator, my favorite one yet (seriously)...
Also, just out of curiosity, what did you mean about receiving strange questions? Just between you and me, i think there's some people on here without all ten toes in the dirt, if you know what i'm sayin'! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

Re: Regulator News - 02/17/10 03:43 AM

I do believe that Dan is having the time of his life, what with all this angst over the release of the Reg. I alternate between believing he is seriously trying to design a knife based on the feedback from us dogs and believing he is doing whatever the hell he wants to do with the Reg. He probably should have done the latter from the start.
Posted By: Recon422

Re: Regulator News - 02/17/10 04:01 AM

Considering the basic knife needs of anyone currently serving in the sandbox, 1S1K folks included, the new design is just about ideal. It seems that most of the negativity has come from everyone's assumption that this knife was designed for the backwoodsman and hiker / camper when it is clearly meant to reach its full potential as a combat / field blade. Beating it lengthwise into a log should be at the absolute bottom of the Regulator's to-do list. This is going to be a great all around knife and IMHO Dan has just about nailed it.

I agree entirely. Were I still in the service (I hon discharged like three years ago) I would absolutely LOVE to have a knife like this. When I was in, I carried a sog seal pup (which was lost due to kydex sheath failure...sigh). Something like the regulator would've been great.

Off they go, into the wild blue yonder,
What to do, they will guess and ponder.
They don't care just what things cost,
Unlimited funding, all restraint is lost.
So let's all hail the BOYS in blue,
Smile Randy, you know it's true! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Hey Tom, You're a poet (and maybe know it) GOOD ONE!!
You're MOSTLY right. I have seen those mega buck wrenches, toilet seats etc. Heck, I could have made them for about $49.95. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> But wait, If they would order in the next 10 minutes, I'd double their order! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Military Unit Ordering Question - 02/18/10 06:08 PM

Pvt. Klink/Dan:

Sounds as though the Yard has large orders or contracts with military units / individual personnel.

I'm an Army officer in a combat engineer unit that is set to deploy in the next 7-12 months. I know there are Soldiers in the unit who would be very interested in adding a Regulator bowie to their battle rattle.

How are military contracts set up? -- is it by unit, per individual, or in another fashion? How far in advance do orders need to be placed? If you'd prefer to discuss this offline, I'm interested in doing so. Any input is appreciated.

Re: Regulator News - 02/19/10 10:40 PM

I need some news! I don't want to give into temptation and buy another TT Reg off the secondary market. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

Please give me something to stay strong and resist. I want to spend money at SYKCO. Please I don't know how long I can hold out. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif" alt="" />

Re: Military Unit Ordering Question - 02/20/10 12:29 AM

Thanks BLD522,

I'll try Renee. Klink doesn't seem to have an answer. Scrapyard puts out a good product, but the time delay between ordering and receiving seems as though it could be a problem--the waiting/guessing game is fun for the forum, but when equipment is expected to be delivered for deployment--it needs to be there at the right place at the right time.

Re: Military Unit Ordering Question - 02/20/10 01:16 AM

Crawdad - sorry I didn't get back to you. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> Dan or Renee are the people you need to contact - the Moderators have nothing to do with orders, contracts, etc. We are simply volunteers doing a job that Dan asked us to do. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Re: Military Unit Ordering Question - 02/20/10 02:25 AM

I sure as hell hope that SYKCO responds quicker to military orders (assuming they are in response to Request for Bids) than they do to the public or else the military is operating with a handicap without the Fighter!
