Regulator Testing

Regulator Testing - 01/20/10 09:08 PM

My six months is up for keeping quiet on the Regulator now it is time to share some thoughts and photos.

The Regulator carried very well in a SpecOps sheath, I was carrying my daughter and about 25lbs of gear along with my .357 it was nice not having even more weight from a knife.

[Linked Image from s873.photobucket.com]

Along the trail I hunted for Fat Wood, the Regulator was great at chopping through stumps and prying away wood. I had no fear about the knife bending from my prying, I even gave it some kicks. No pics of this but it is a beast!

After a nice hike we got to a beautiful lake but it was cold. Time to make a fire. The Regulator worked limbing branches and chopped through smaller limbs easily. I really liked the handle design, it allowed you to move your hand back and have more momentum with your swing. I was the only person in my party who does anything with knives but everyone wanted to cut some trees with the Regulator. One girl was 5ft 105lbs and did a great job chopping.

My nephew thought it was pretty cool

[Linked Image from s873.photobucket.com]

I was amazed how well the edge held up and with a little stropping came back to being very sharp. I don’t know what it was but the edge was way better than my S5CG.

I did a little cabin camping later this summer. There weren’t many small downed limbs around our cabin but I did find some that were 5 – 6 inches across. Did a little chopping which worked but was a lot of work. Now on to batoning, I first went through the wood as I would if chopping and it was much easier then trying to chop. I had a large Baton.

[Linked Image from s873.photobucket.com]
[Linked Image from s873.photobucket.com]
[Linked Image from s873.photobucket.com]

Then on to splitting my god what a way to go, the thick Regulator was like using a splitting maul. Even with not much point sticking out the other side I made short work of the trees. Again everyone in my group was telling me I was going to ruin my knife, but it came out still sharp.

[img]http://s873.photobucket.com/albums/ab293/ralphrotull/CIMG2561.jpg[/img]

I made a few marshmallow sticks afterword. After a little stropping I went for some fine work carving my walking stick. Although it was not the ideal size for fine work I was able to cut numbers and letters into the wood, along with some other decorations.

No pics of this trip but I went to the In-laws house and needed to make a fire. I went out to the wood pile to gather wood and they had no small stuff. I gathered the big stumps and the hatched and went to work. Like all their blades this on was dull too, so out came the Regulator. I set it on those logs and beat the heck out of it with the hatchet. It made quite a racket but went through it like butter.

As has been stated before, the Regulator is a thick blade done right! It is easy to slice, do fine work, and chop with. The handles are great, the most comfortable yet from SYKCO, and they give you plenty of holding options. While batoning I did do some minor damage to the handle but nothing major. The tip did work great for digging and making holes. But I did have a small part of the tip roll back, not big enough to show in the pictures but big enough to notice.

I love this knife and I can’t wait to see what Dan does with it.

Great photos and write up. You all certainly have a lot of love for this blade. Visually, I kind of struggle with it, but a great user is a great user.

Seems to sound like another classic blade in the making...

Re: Regulator Testing - 01/21/10 01:12 AM

Another Thanks for the great review... The hilt-part of the handle getting munched-up seems to be (maybe the only) damage that has occured to several peoples' knives... Do you think a conventional metal guard the same size and shape as the "hilt" face, between the handle and the blade, would protect the handle from damage? That seems to be the knife's only weak spot is the large guard. I wouldn't want to see the guard go away, though, because it's such a great handle design. Maybe it just needs some reinforcing? of course now that the release is impending, it's a little late to be making design suggestions... But i might consider making a guard of G10 or whatnot and affixing onto the front face of the handle - has anyone done anything in the direction of reinforcing the hilt/guard area of the Res-c? Just wondering... Thanks again, Sethro -- makes me long for its release that much more...

Re: Regulator Testing - 01/21/10 02:00 AM

I actually like this knife just the way it is . When I first saw it- I thought it looked useless . Then the time came to pick some up and I ordered. The thing is a BEAST-plus it can purely chop and you can easily make it scary sharp .It is a joy to sharpen and with a little stropping the 101 lays down a great edge . Thanks for the review and pictures.

Great review Seth!

I was a bit in dislike of the Regulator until I got ahold of it at Blade West!! It is now on the list!!

Re: Regulator Testing - 01/21/10 02:11 AM

See what I've been saying? This thing even outclasses the SoD as a camp blade, IMHO. Great review Seth.

Re: Regulator Testing - 01/21/10 02:54 AM

It is a "go to" blade. I am having a Double sheath made for my SODLE AND S5LE because at one time I thought that would be a great camp setup, and I am sure they will get used. But for the most part I really want to just use the Regulator! "It does it all"

Believe it or not that sheath came with a Muk I got off the Exchange. Didn't fit the Muk at all. It is a Combat Master but I don't know if it is long or short. I had to stretch the kydex a bit now the Regulator fits great.

Re: Regulator Testing - 01/26/10 06:59 AM

Those are some great pics and a great review. I did some of the same testing out in the woods and came up with the same results. I liked the blade durability and edge retention and the grip provided great retention and shock absorbsion. I didn't get any pics from being out in the woods,

but I did get some while at the junk yard...

[Linked Image from i628.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i628.photobucket.com]

It took a couple of hard stabs to get it to penetrate the windshield but it finally went through. It did roll the tip on the Regulator in the process though.

[Linked Image from i628.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i628.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i628.photobucket.com]

Now, stabbing into the hood was not only easy but it was also fun and a great stress reliever. It was almost like cutting through paper and the knife still had a usable edge on it too.

Note the damage on the end of the handle from pounding it into logs out in the woods from the previous weekend.

[Linked Image from i628.photobucket.com]

This pic is the of the outer front edge of the hood. First, I stabbed the Regulator into the hood, penetrating both the outer shell and the underlying sheet metal support. I then proceeded to pound on the spine of the knife with a three pound sledge cutting out through the front edge of the hood. Very impressive!

[Linked Image from i628.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i628.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i628.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i628.photobucket.com]

The next test was cutting through the thicker bumper support, with the aid of the three pound sledge of course. As you can see from the pics, the Regulator cut through the outer edge of the steel until it reached the inner and much thicker part of the bumper support. It started to bite into it then...

[img]http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu4/MAJORSDAD13/Knives/IMG_0441.jpg[/img]

This happened!

Overall, I was very impressed with the performance of the Regulator. Now, I know that this test was overkill for what the practical purpose of the knife is for, but Renee requested that I use and abuse it. So I did. I would definately recommend it to anyone looking for a sharped prybar under the appearance of a knife. You won't be disappointed!

And by the way, Scrap Yard did replace the knife.

Afraid I didn't really get to test my Reg like I wantet to. I used it some but I would have loved to have able to spend a good hour or two regulating my surroundings. I love destructive testing, because it's really the only way to know when and how the knife will fail - plus it gives that sick satisfaction of seeing something sad (the knife being destroyed) and exciting (the knife being destroyed) at the same time... sort of tragic fun... But i'm glad i have an idea how far i can push my Reg now...

Thanks MD for a GREAT test, and thanks Dan, for replacing his test knife -- It's for moments like this that I love Scrapyard Knives.

I've never liked the look of the regulator handles, visually, they are the ugliest if seen from scrap yard, but i've never held one, and they do look like they have very functional features. So, They seem to follow Dan's POU for a knife

Re: Regulator Testing - 05/05/11 06:34 AM

I find the handle to be very comfortable.
The only thing I would change on the regulator is to add a couple of inches in blade length.
Ten inch blade would be nutty.

The grip of the Regulator is one of the most comfortable handles of any model. I love the Regulator.

Re: Regulator Testing - 05/06/11 05:04 AM

Love my Dereg, When I twirl the knife, the thumb ramp sort of catches my palm, and the knife excute a 180` roll as it rotates to a backhand grip. I catch it and 90% of the time it is facing edge out, ready to bite! The handle shape is amazing, feels really good in the hand too.
