I've had a few mutts, no Double Cut though. Very good looking blade. I've had a few SY knives come and go, but I don't think I could ever let my Original DM go.

Speaking of Bambi, I ran over a previously-ran-over deer in Seabrook Texas on my way home from work this morning and got a bone fragment stuck in my tire. FLAT! Gotta take the tire to get it fixed when I get up.

I've seen them anywhere from $125.00 to $160.00 range.

Sometimes if your patient you can find them in the $110 - $120 range.

How can you tell which one you've got? I bought my DM at Knob Creek this past Saturday at the Busse table. The receipt just says "Dumpster Mutt". It's a plain edge in desert tan. I got it for $69, it seemed like a good deal, especially considering some of the Busse knives were going for +$800.

Also, where's a good place to get a kydex sheath for it? I'd like something off the shelf, in desert tan and is similar to the ESEE/Rat Cutlery RC-4 sheath only as shown upper right here: http://eseeknives.com/rc-4%20instruction%20sheet-B.jpg

Thanks,

Al

Al

maybe you can find a nylon sheath that fits it (off the shelf) otherwise for kydex and "color" it has to be a custom sheath made/fitted for it.

they are not that expensive to have done/made. it depends on what you want. more means "MORE!"

pm any of our fine sheath makers or others and I'm sure they will give you what you want.

Except for the color and based on the price, it sounds as if you may have gotten one of the original DMs . (All the original DMs were Black/Black.) Quick way to find out is to check the grind. If it's sabre ground, it's based on the original DM. If it's flat ground, it's a variant. Post a pic and we'll be able to tell you.

And welcome to The Yard.
It's one like they've had since the Fall 2008 Knob Creek, "new" Res-C handles as opposed to the original recycled Basic handles. At the Fall 2008 show they were priced at $89.95, but then (I think at Blade), they were sold as a $69.95 show special, and that's been the price at all the shows I've seen them at since. I bought the Tanker gray in this picture at KC:

[Linked Image from i202.photobucket.com]

I also scored the middle Vex at KC (it was the only Vex they had); I already had the top green linen Vex from the July 2009 Lardoganza.

Re: DumpsterMutt variations,how many? - 04/13/10 07:32 PM

Albin...I think those pics are SOD (sons of dogfather) and a DFCG (Dogfather Combat Grade)...next to an Regulator LE. Doesn't look like any Dumpster Mutts in the pic.

Is it the same color as those blades in the upper right...tan / tan? What's the length of the blade?
Posted By: md02geist

Re: DumpsterMutt variations,how many? - 04/13/10 07:32 PM

Albin I think the tan/sage blades you have pictured there are not dumpster mutts but son of dogfather blades. Look at the blade length next to what is obviously a regulator LE.

In addition, notice the thumb ramp and choil shape.

If you were just showing that picture to show the color combo then you're right on, that appears to be sage/tan...but if you think one of those knives you bought is pictured in there, and you're SURE you bought a dumpster mutt, you might be mistaken.

I could be wrong here, but looking at
http://scrapyardknives.com/knives.htm

I don't think I am.

Ishikawa,

Ignore the black colored knives, I *believe* this is the only pic I've seen of the Busse knives at KCR that show the two tan Scrapyard DMs. These were the only two Scrapyards that I saw at the Busse table, but I could be wrong about that.

The guy that sold it to me was pretty clear that it was a Dumpster Mutt and it's written that way on the receipt. I've asked for more pics from the Busse guys, if they post more, I'll cross post them here.

Thanks,

Understood...we're all talking about the tan ones in the pic. It looks like there is consensus in the Yard that those are most likely Tan/Tan SOD's, and probably not a Dumpster Mutt.

Could you take a tape measure / ruler to your knife and post the blade length? That would help clear it up pretty quickly. If it is indeed a Mutt variant...I will be very happy

Thanks Albin!

Re: DumpsterMutt variations,how many? - 04/13/10 07:40 PM

But those aren't dumpster mutts in the picture. They're sons of dogfather. Two very different knives. You can tell by the blade length, it's right next to a regulator LE and it's about the same length...the dumpster mutt is a bit shorter than the regulator, noticeably so.

If you purchased one of those knives for the price of a dumpster mutt, you got a hell of a deal (almost half price of RETAIL, not to mention what secondary market sons of dogfather go for).

I like it when a Dog mates with a Hog...to yield an res-c handle on an INFI base. Don't get me started with more Wiener jokes

Seriously though...I wanted to state earlier that I'd do backflips for an INFI Dumpster Mutt, but I didn't want to derail this too much. Make it a Competition Finish (ooooh boy, my heart just fluttered a little)...and I'd liken it to the Mad Max Mutt (M^3). I too, am content with my Yard blades, and will always "circle back" to the absolute insane value proposition that these blades maintain. They're amazing...to say the least.

When the DM first came out they were basic, black on black old handles. we were shocked at the 69 dollar price (and luv'd it) but when you want colors and different handles and grinds and pretty satin/finishes the price will go up~!

Dan has given us many of these things and we're lucky but I personally like a great blade at a great price (like the original DM)

I decided to dig out my uber-rare Fall 2008 Knob Creek haul of Mutts and Keepers for a picture. Mutts were priced higher at that show ($89.95), but I've never seen Arctic White or Bama Clay Scrap Yard knives since and the only other Moss was a couple S6s at the Fall 09 show. Fixed it for you. You didn't need the stuff after .jpg

Did you find a sheath maker? Mashed Cat makes ones that look like the ones you posted but I don't know if he has a DMCG to go off of.

I really like this one. My only beef with the original DM was the small handle. It was just a bit too small.

Nice score!

Tanker was new at the time, but has continued to be produced:

Mmmmm.....sabre grind.

It's interesting...the new ones posted by Seth definitely look sabre ground, similar to the original DMCG. However the variants posted by Jim all look to be flat ground, similar to the LE / DC models.

I fondled my heavy DMCG last night for quite some time. I love the blade, the heft, and the versatility of it. For me, it has two choke up points: I can wrap my index finger in the choil to get a little closer...and for the real close up work, my middle finger goes in the choil and index straddles the spine. Here's to hoping I get a desert model soon

Re: DumpsterMutt variations,how many? - 04/14/10 07:38 PM

i posted this in another thread, but do you guys think a used S5 CG for a used Dumpter Mutt would be a fair trade? thinking about trading my S5 for one.
Posted By: Ishikawa

Re: DumpsterMutt variations,how many? - 04/14/10 07:41 PM

From a monetary perspective, no. S5 has more followers, and is an updated design.

From a biased puppy that loves the mutt, yes My Mutt gets carried in the woods, the S5 stays home.

Re: DumpsterMutt variations,how many? - 04/14/10 07:49 PM

tonestar - sell your S5 and buy a DM.

My Urban Mutt should arrive today, and will be the only DM variant I've ever held. I'm curious to see if I like it better than my YKLE (as in - is the extra .5" of blade a good or bad thing).

Either way, I've long said I'd love for another 4.5" to 5" YK or DM variant (or re-release). We all love the big choppers, but I use 5"ish knives for 90% of my needs.

Re: DumpsterMutt variations,how many? - 04/14/10 08:06 PM

As Ishi said, the S5 tends to be worth a bit more monetarily (see my reply in the other post).

Re: DumpsterMutt variations,how many? - 04/15/10 04:55 PM

So, can someone give me which variation I have? One person has said it's a "Combat Grade Variant" and a saber grind. Is this correct? Will this make a difference in making a sheath for it?

Thanks,

Al

Re: DumpsterMutt variations,how many? - 04/15/10 05:10 PM

Yours has a sabre grind, like the original. All others had a full flat grind. The original was .285 inches thick. Not sure what thickness yours is. Best to just send it to one of our many fine sheath makers. There are several that are members of this forum.

Re: DumpsterMutt variations,how many? - 04/16/10 02:54 AM

In answer to your original question, there was:

1) The original Dumpster Mutt -- it was sterile, black, a bit thicker than all that came after at .285-inches thick, and had recycled Busse basic handles.

2) The LE -- it's polished, had a logo, and was a bit thinner, I seem to remember .25-inch thick, and also had recycled Busse basic handles.

3) "Second Generation" CG Dumpster Mutts -- this is what I'd call yours. They're a coated .25-inch blade, making them about .26. They have molded Res-C handles and have come in many different colors. Most have logos, though I think some don't. I'd say that this is the most common Mutt, so finding a sheath isn't an issue.

4) MOD, "Military Overrun Dog" or MOD-7 -- it was a special offering from the 12/2007 Razorganza (it was item #7, so that's why MOD-7), limited to less than 50 available to the civilian market -- there was a bet, Dan won it, do a search for details if you're interested. It was basically a double-cut .25-inch logoed Dumpster Mutt, half-serrated and having the last of the Busse basic handles. They came with a kydex sheath, but not up to the standards of anything you'd get from a custom maker.

5) I think ColdOne owns a one-off fully serrated prototype Dumpster Mutt.

6) There was the "Run DMDC!!!... Dumpster Mutt Blow Out!!!" release -- they were Double Cut Dumpster Mutts, logoed, having molded Res-C handles. They were the last knife sold from Texas, before Dan and Patti moved to Ohio so that he could be closer to the production facilities.

That's the huge advantage of going to one of the shows -- you can pick knives up, check the balance and see how the handles fit your hand. It's a lot more money if you have to travel and stay at a motel (I'm fortunate that Knob Creek is local, but I've considered going to Blade a couple times), but there are sometimes show special discounts, you'll get knives that aren't in the company stores, and you get to see/touch before pulling the trigger, so there are some offsetting advantages. Oh, and there's also the social aspect, if you're into that sort of thing.

DM handles are a little smaller than S6+ handles (and, of course, mudders), but they're pretty good for most folks.

Thanks,

Al

Re: DumpsterMutt variations,how many? - 05/16/10 01:32 AM

Bruce, I'm not sure that they understand there are three different Busse Companies, which make different models (although often quite similar in design) using different steel formulations. I do not disagree with your assertion that $69.95 was an outstanding price (I bought one at that price myself), but the comparison of a DM CG with one of the $800 offerings may indicate that they're not familiar with the differences between brands and Combat Grade vs Custom Shop knives.

Scrap Yard is the best value to performance ratio of the three. While they have made some models in SR101 ("Swamp Rat's steel") and a couple in INFI ("Busse Combat's steel"), as well as 154CM, their bread-and-butter has been a steel named SR77 (based on a tool steel, S7, commonly used for high impact applications, such as jackhammer bits). Scrap Yard models average around $100 in price, and have topped out (thus far) with the S5LE, made of INFI, for $200.

As with all three Bussekin companies, Scrap Yard knives have a 100% money-back (release price, not secondary market) or replacement (if available) guarantee. All three companies also use proprietary cryogenic heat treatment processes. So, while Scrap Yard knives are not as expensive, that does not mean they're not as "good". Scrap Yard is run by Jerry's brother, Dan.

Swamp Rat is run by Jerry's wife, Jennifer. Its primary steel is SR101, which is a customized 52100 (ball bearing) steel; SR101 has a reputation for holding a shaving-sharp edge longer than SR77. However, while both SR77 and SR101 are high carbon steels that will rust, SR77 tends to surface rust, while SR101 will pit deeply if not cared for. Other than that, the biggest difference is that Scrap Yard uses a synthetic rubber material called Respirene C for their handles.

Busse Combat began using Res C, then discontinued it in favor of Micarta/G10 as their handle material. When Swamp Rat began making knives in 2002, they used Res C, until they also decided to switch to Micarta/G10 for their their handles -- some of the Rats still lament that decision. Scrap Yard was the last company formed (I believe in 2006, this appears to be the first Knives Forum thread: Hi Gang...), and they continue to use Res C.

Busse Combat is the original Busse knife company, run by Jerry; they've used various steels over the years, but the current is a proprietary formula called INFI -- Here's a link to the page where its discussed over on the Busse Combat site: INFI page. Busse Combat knives are the highest priced of the three companies. A "Custom Shop" model that has been produced in fairly good numbers is named the MOAB; they start at $2197.00 each. That's on the extreme end of their prices, but it's common to spend between $250 and $450 for a non-Custom Shop, non-LE Busse Combat knife.

Thanks for the detailed post JIM!

I have at least come to realize what you have posted over the last few months but it would have saved me a lot of time if I had just had your post explaining it so nicely from the start!

It is quite difficult to get an general overview of what exactly is going on with regards to Busse, Swamp rats and Scrap yard knives. The information is of course there, but you have to sift through everything to get the just of it.

I would LOVE a scrapper 6 and have been looking on bladeforums, but as with everything on the secondary market it now comes at a "price"
