Scrap Yard Regulator-Bayonet Mod - 08/12/10 04:04 PM

[Linked Image from i1008.photobucket.com]

SO, my impatience led me to put a wrap on the handle and complete the project before the camo pattern cord arrived. So, this is not what it will look like when the new cord arrives. I guess I was just to eager to show off my mod.

[Linked Image from i1008.photobucket.com]

Here are some "in the works" images.

I started with a Regulator and an M7 Bayonet.
[Linked Image from i1008.photobucket.com]

Handles removed and paint stripped.

[Linked Image from i1008.photobucket.com]

The muzzle ring in he process of having the hole widened to fit the tang of the Regulator. I did the majority of the work with a Dremel and then did the final bits with small hand held files. There isn't a bit of wiggle once I hammered the muzzle ring onto the Regulator's tang.

[Linked Image from i1008.photobucket.com]

This shows how I had to cut spacers out of flat steel bar to make the tang of the M7 Bayonet, which was a little bigger than 4mm, as thick as the 8mm thick tang of the Regulator.

[Linked Image from i1008.photobucket.com]
[Linked Image from i1008.photobucket.com]

A close up of the muzzle ring to show the military issue stamps I made sure to leave visible.

[Linked Image from i1008.photobucket.com]
[Linked Image from i1008.photobucket.com]

This image shows the wooden insert I carved to give the handle its shape.

[img]http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af208/mediaperture/SY-Baynoet-5.jpg[/img]

Here is a very rough illustration to give you an idea of how it is held together. The light gray shape is the Regulator's tang and the dark gray is the M7 Bayonet tang and flat bar I used to sandwich it all together. The Regulator's tang doesn't budge a bit once put in place even if I didn't screw the fasteners down. I also made sure not to alter the piece of steel I bought from Dan, so I could replace the Res C handle in case the project failed. The Res C handle came off in one piece unharmed by the way.

[img]http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af208/mediaperture/bayonetidea.jpg[/img]

I stuck it in some wood.

[img]http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af208/mediaperture/SY-Bayonet-7.jpg[/img]

I used Dupli Color 1200 degree silicon bsed paint for the black coating,a suggestion I got from one of the Dogs in these forums. Your name escapes me at the moment, but thanks. A lot of design was done by bouncing ideas off of forum members, so thank you all.

I put it on an M-16 training rifle (Plastic and metal non-functioning) used for martial arts training and it fit perfectly. Felt heavier than the issued bayonets, but I didn't notice it after a few minutes of going through some combat techniques with it fixed to the barrel.

This thing feels great in hand too. It is heavier, obviously, than the stock Regulator, but not enough to make it feel like I couldn't split open a rib cage with lightning speed. I'm not the biggest fan of the Res C handles, they are great shock absorbers, but I tend to feel like I am going to get blisters after heavy use. I wrap most of my handles with cord. I guess I am addicted to the look, process and feel of 550 cord wraps.

I plan to do some thrusting test on a piece of plywood to see how it penetrates. This is a pain though, since here in Germany they have very strict rules about having rifles out of the armory without good reason. So, it'll have to be next time I cover a story at the ranges. And yes I know, nothing really exist or took place unless it was photographically documented. There will be more pics coming soon.

Hope you enjoy the pics as much as I enjoyed the process.

Wow, I am absolutely blown away by that mod!!!!!

Love it.

How is the piece of shaped wood attached on the bottom of the handle?

I would even look into getting a piece of Micarta to put there and shape. Super strong stuff for impact and torsion etc.

Thanks a ton for making this post, I am glad I ran into it over on the bladeforums area.

JJ, That IS awsome!!! You really did some fine work. Now IF you could just talk Dan into making a couple three thousand more you would have a fine side job!

Re: Scrap Yard Regulator-Bayonet Mod - 08/13/10 09:53 AM

Thanks all.

And, thank you, Sumo. I did some scratch testing on the non visible parts of the tang and that stuff seems pretty tough. The best part about was how thin it went on. Unlike regular spray paint it covered well without a heavy build up of paint. That allowed me to paint the smaller parts in the pommel separately and still have them fit back into the pommel. The move without any increased friction.

It is simply held on by the wrap. No wiggle of any kind. I am confident the ash I used for it will hold up, but if it doesn't for some reason, I will look into mircata. Thanks for the suggestion.

That has to be the single coolest modification I have seen to a Scrapyard knife yet. I love when people put nice wood scales on these res-C handled knives but your mod is completely in a different category. Would there be any benefit to sharpening the swedge?

LOL, too bad I don't have a bit more money to throw at another Reg, I'd be terribly tempted to make one myself, with permission of course. How does it shift the POI on your rifle? a heavy piece of steel hanging off the end of the barrel can't be good for accuracy, I'd imagine.

Looks amazing, can't wait to see it with the Camo wrap!

I'm curious, where did you learn to wrap 550 Cord like that? And is there a reference somewhere that I could consult so I could learn too, I think some para cord would look sweet on a couple of my other knives, and I have 2 rolls (big, military rolls) of dummy cord to find a place for around the apartment.

Re: Scrap Yard Regulator-Bayonet Mod - 08/19/10 09:18 AM

ECF, I picked that technique up from a friend in the Corps. It really isn't hard. Just wrap the cord around the handle with a piece of shorter cord on both sides hanging over the long "wrapping cord. Then, just weave it. over one, under one, over one under one...................

L4D, that's an awesome idea. I didn't realize it before, but now I feel like I can't live without a Dog Father bayonet on my Benelli 12 gauge.

Re: Scrap Yard Regulator-Bayonet Mod - 08/20/10 08:23 AM

I just looked at the trench guns of WWI to see what the two old-timers were talking about. Holy cow!!! That makes my bayonet look like a toy! It really is like strapping a Scrapizashi to a shotty.
Posted By: El CacaFuego

Re: Scrap Yard Regulator-Bayonet Mod - 08/21/10 07:36 PM

Those old bayonets are a hoot, especially on a long rifle like a Mosin Nagant M1933 sniper rifle. Mine is almost as long as I am tall with the bayo mounted.
Posted By: SkunkHunter

Re: Scrap Yard Regulator-Bayonet Mod - 08/22/10 07:24 AM

I have my Grandfathers bayonet from WWI I can't believe they hung a blade that long on a firearm! Guess they were still operating on the Civil War mentality where swords still were used more than most folks think.
Posted By: Legion Prime

Re: Scrap Yard Regulator-Bayonet Mod - 08/23/10 02:41 AM

Nah, actually they were designed that way for a reason. When a trench was rushed what they would do is just stick the stock into the bottom of the trench bracing it with their foot and wait for the enemy to hop down and impale themselves. You really did want a good long spike (not so much a blade, my Mosin bayonet is more like a big screwdriver) long enough to ensure it can reach vitals the long way and a good solid mount and "blade" as there is soon to be a full body hanging off it. The bayonets would actually affect accuracy as their weight attached to the barrel would alter the barrel harmonics. The Russians never even made sheaths for theirs, if it wasn't on the end of their rifle or opening a can of borscht they'd just stick them in their belt.
Posted By: Legion Prime

Re: Scrap Yard Regulator-Bayonet Mod - 08/23/10 02:43 AM

Oh yeah, almost forgot. That bayo is pretty sweet looking JJ . . . Can I have it? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Scrap Yard Regulator-Bayonet Mod - 08/23/10 08:25 AM

Thanks, Legion Prime and no you can't.

However, U.S. bayonets, which Skunk was referring to, were like swords. You are talking about foreign bayonets. I am not sure, but I don't think the U.S. ever issued many if any "spike" bayonets.

Here's the trench gun from WWI that started the old school bayonet conversation.

Here's another WWI gun with waki size bayonet.

Re: Scrap Yard Regulator-Bayonet Mod - 08/24/10 12:07 AM

Ahhh, ok. Gotcha. Those bayonets actually don't look a whole lot different from my great great grandfathers bayonet he had from the civil war. although in a trench a bayonet able to be used as a short sword doesn't seem like such a bad idea.
