How many of you Dogs EDC fixed blades?

How many of you Dogs EDC fixed blades? - 09/24/10 11:45 PM

There is a lot of talk at the Swamp about a folding Bussekin. Personally, I've stopped using folding knives (with the exception of one very old broken down Wenger SAK that just ends up in my pocket due to habit).

I EDC a Swamp Warden when I'm in professional office attire and add a SY Urban Mutt or SR RMD when I'm in street clothes.

Do any of you dogs EDC a fixed blade? Would you EDC a Bussekin folder over a Bussekin fixed blade if it were available?

I just can't understand the interest in a folder, and wanted to see if I'm in the minority.

I don't, but I wish I did... just doesn't seem practical. But when a SHTF scenario happens I will for sure, a big one!

I EDC more than one fixed blade... (what can I say I'm a Knife Nut... )

I would "NEVER" EDC any folder over a fixed blade! I do EDC folders too, and they both have their place, but any folder with moving parts has it's weaknesses, compared a well made fixed blade. That's just an indisputable Fact, IMHO!

Rainwalker,

+1 (I too EDC more than one fixed blade....minimum of one on body and one or two off body. Often two on body and an additional off body).

+1 (I would never choose a folder over fixed)

I have to admit that I'd love a Busse folder though.

It just wouldn't replace my fixed blades.

Gary - I totally agree with you and Jeff. Right now, I have a DSSF on my belt and a C.S. X2 Voyager in my pocket. If I want to go unnoticed in town I just slip a SwampWarden and sheath in my pocket.

Tom - that sound similar to my load out. I'm heading into town to pick up my wife from work, and then we're taking her brother to dinner for his birthday.

My carry gear:

Belt = Glock 19 with night sights, (2) reloads, tac flashlight, SR RMD
Trouser Pockets = Wenger Highlander SAK, SR Swamp Warden, Swedish Firesteel
Get Home Bag = More ammo, Dogfather, etc.

Its only paranoia if you don't ever need it .

For fixed I EDC: Benchmade Activator 211 or Esee Izula

For Folder : Benchmade Mini Griptilian or Spyderco Delica

I have a Swamp Warden, but I need scales on my fixed blade!

If Dan makes a Scrap Warden or Eric sells a Rat Hunter I am in!

Re: How many of you Dogs EDC fixed blades? - 09/25/10 06:57 AM

My edc is a ESEE Izula in the waistband or a Benchmade 943 folder clipped to pocket. I think a good edc must be unobtrusive and comfortable to carry. It's no good if it ain't on you and a folder is most convenient. But as they say, "folder's a toy, fixed blade's a tool."

Don't get me wrong, I use my folding knives more than my fixed blades, because they are convenient to carry. But when the SHTF I want a fixed blade. So for me the ideal EDC is unobtrusive fixed blade with a 3-3.5" edge, a cord wrapped handle, and a slender sheath.

I have to agree with HornDog. Although I carry both a fixed blade and folder, the folder gets used much more often.

I always have a fixed blade and a folder. Usually Swamp Warden or Game Warden. I still need to get a sheath for my mud puppy and that will go in the lineup. I always have an XM-18. I also always have my SAK and a leatherman. I wear Carhartt overalls everyday so I have plenty of pockets.

Re: How many of you Dogs EDC fixed blades? - 09/25/10 09:10 AM

I have yet to have a folder fold on me unintentionally. I started with a Gerber LST and have slowly progressed through Kershaw, Benchmade, Spyderco, Emerson, CRK, Strider and now Hinderer. Anyone can break anything. I am sure someone has busted a dogfather. But at that point you are abusing the "tool" and using it improperly. This folders come broken from the factory stuff is a bunch of crap. I do not consider any knives toys besides switchblades. That is a lock I would not trust if I had to. I do carry a stout fixed blade but the folder gets used 99% of the time. I have to think oh it would cool to use my fixed blade today to even think about it. I dont care what the chore is unless it is chopping. The folder is getting pulled out and used.

Re: How many of you Dogs EDC fixed blades? - 09/25/10 09:24 AM

Ok I Generally EDC a SAK a HAK and a Benchmade. 5 days a week I am in a shirt and tie so I am lucky to get away with a pistol but the fixed blade is out. I never had a problem with a folder until my Emerson folded and almost took my fingers off(multiple times) Hoping the new HACK folder wont have problems.

I do keep multiply fixed blades very close though

Re: How many of you Dogs EDC fixed blades? - 09/25/10 10:28 AM

Seth, you had an Emerson fail on you? Wow. Never had a problem with mine, a cqc7a.

I carry folder(s) every day, and SOMETIMES a fixed blade as edc. Now I carry my little Sebbie (sebbie 2000 classic) and Uncle Um (Umnamzan). The only small Kin blade I have is an assault shaker gen II, but it is smaller than I want for an EDC. IF I ever get a warden or something in that size range, my EDC may change. Nevertheless I will still continue to carry Little Sebbie as to many Sheeple panic at the sight of even a SMALL fixed blade whereas the folder does not get them all that stirred up. Stupid Sheeple.

On my person, I EDC a RAT Izula and a Kershaw Blur. In my bag, I carry an ESEE-4 or my Weiner Dog. I don't carry anything on my belt, sitting for 12 hours at a time I'll catch my belt knife on the chair arm and such. When not working, usually my Izula isn't far away no matter what I'm wearing, even if it's just sweats to the gym.

Re: How many of you Dogs EDC fixed blades? - 09/26/10 02:38 AM

I used to EDC an Izula, with a better sheath I might have continued. At the time I was pretty strapped for cash and it was the most suitable knife I had for day in day out stuff.

Now I'm carrying an Emerson that I am just as confident in as the Izula. It carries easier and holds an edge better.

Re: How many of you Dogs EDC fixed blades? - 09/26/10 03:24 AM

I tried EDC-ing a Swamp Warden for a short time, but my (previous) boss told me that she received a report that I was carrying a weapon at work, so to leave it at home from now on.

I EDC a Kershaw G10/S30v Leek, and chose "I would NOT EDC a Bussekin Folder over a Bussekin fixed blade." because I don't believe that I would EDC a Bussekin folder over that Leek. Why, you might ask; because I need my EDC to be lightweight, not too big or too small, to have a thin, but reasonably strong blade (I don't pry with a folder, but it needs to hold up to normal use). I want it to deploy fast, have excellent edge-holding characteristics, and finally -- I want to be able to replace it for less than $100. I do not believe a Bussekin folder would meet all those requirements.

I've carried literally dozens of different folders, and nothing has worked better for me than the Leek model 1660G10. I've misplaced one (in my house of all places; I haven't seen it in a year, but still expect it to turn up eventually), which is the main reason for my < $100 requirement -- I own a few more expensive damascus folders with exotic handles, but get so paranoid about keeping track of them that I don't enjoy carrying them. I bought several of those leeks for around $75/each on closeout, so I have a ready supply of backups. I suspect that's what will be in my pocket when I die, because I just don't think I'll ever find anything that fits my needs better.

BTW: I own a Rat Trap; it's a nice knife -- nothing magical mind you, but nice. It's bigger than I want to carry, so it's put away and still in the packaging from Knob Creek. I had three at one time; I sold one (at cost) and traded another, but kept the last one for bragging rights. I don't have the extensive Rat Trap collections that some folks do, but I do have one of 'em.

Re: How many of you Dogs EDC fixed blades? - 09/27/10 02:00 AM

On the weekends I carry a Becker Necker or Esee HEST plus a folder.
During the week at work I only carry a folder, usually my spyderco endura with zdp 189 blade. At work I will cycle in as my edc; military, mini-cyclone, buck (can't remember model)or crkt m1.
In edition each of my key rings has a small folder on it.
Work keys - sak officers model
car keys - small gerber
truck keys - mini buck
jeep keys - small gerber

Car emergency kit - original dumpster mutt and cold steel trail hawk
Truck emergency kit - regulator TT and fiskar hatchet

I don't own any Bussekin steel other then from the yard.
Two kids in university so expensive steel is a no go
And I love what the yard does

My EDC at work is a HRLM concealed under a untucked shirt. When I feel a need to have a tucked in shirt I generally carry a CRKT M16-14D. Outside of work it is usually a Benchmade Autospike or a cheap CRKT M16-13Z to supplement the Pistol. When I'm feeling froggy I may add a Bud Nealy Kinzhal. The HRLM has been a usefull tool at work and gives me confidence when working out in public, but still get some looks when I need to pull it out. Considering getting a trimmer Bussekin under 4 inches. Would like a Vex or HCLE, or better yet Dan needs to make us a good user rendition of a SAR3.

Re: How many of you Dogs EDC fixed blades? - 09/28/10 01:35 AM

If I could EDC a fixed blade I would. My understanding is that fixed blades of any size must be unconcealed in the Commonwealth of Virginia, neighboring DC, and Maryland. A belt knife just doesn't go with office attire if I want to stay out of management's office.

The swamp warden with my new azwelke sheath would be first on my EDC list. I work in an environment where my 3" Spyderco Centofante (Wharncliffe blade) has people question me.

Re: How many of you Dogs EDC fixed blades? - 09/28/10 03:17 AM

I've been EDC'ing an S5LE for about a year now, and am very happy with it. Yes, it's uncomfortable when I sit at my desk sometimes. Yes, it freaks some of my co-workers out. No, I wouldn't go back to a folder for primary chores.

When I'm playing contractor on the evenings and weekends, I carry and use extensively either a Busse Tank Buster or the Dan's recently released Regulator. Both make fine prying/chopping/cutting tools that I use constantly. And I've NEVER had a client complain about my big fixed blades, perhaps since they are so clearly being used as 'tools' in the sense of any screwdriver or hammer.

In addition to those two, I also EDC a SuperKnife (little folding utility knife) and a Leatherman. I use the crap out of the superknife, probably more than anything else, and really like them. They wear out soon enough, but they're also cheap enough to toss and replace. The leatherman is great for the little pliers and screwdrivers. Never replace the 'real' pliers and screwdrivers, but nice to have when the real stuff is back in the truck. I bought mine at Costco, so it's also at the price point that when it wears out or breaks, it won't be a crisis to toss and replace.

Jrod - sweet!

A coworker of mine recently saw me pull out my Swamp Warden (worn necker style under a dress shirt and tie or in a small kydex for pocket carry) to cut up an apple and thought it was "cool". That particular day I was pocket carrying the SW.

The situation might have been different had I pulled it out from under my shirt . People are too conditioned. They all seem to think that normal people are abnormal if they want to belt-wear a decent sized fixed blade (like a S5 or RMD) to the office!

HD's Facebook experience is proof positive that sheeple are afraid of the sheep dogs.

Re: How many of you Dogs EDC fixed blades? - 09/29/10 10:19 PM

I was actually told by a middle-management type that carrying the S5 at work could be "limiting my career-advancement potential". Being in the happy place where my little contracting business could actually support me if it had to, I told him "Gee, I thought it was talking a lot of smack about lousy management that was limiting my career advancement potential"...

He hasn't talked to me again!

Re: How many of you Dogs EDC fixed blades? - 09/30/10 01:01 AM

HD - that's sad but true.

My EDC medium fixed blade is always concealed under an untucked shirt for the same reason. Its totally legal (concealed and open), but for the average person it makes me a terrorist.

The same applies to Indiana Handgun Licenses. I have a lifetime license, and can carry open or concealed but choose to keep my kit hidden. Don't want to scare the soccer moms at Wal-Mart.

Its pathetic really. Those same people what television shows with all sorts of horrendous violence, but then freak out when a normal / productive citizen is armed / equipped.

Well said my dear friend. I too carry more than one fixed blade daily.
Also I carry a ZT-0301 and a "Backbone" by Randy Douchette, then I pick a couple of pocket knives for my front pockets. Sometimes I have more knives in my way to get to a different knife!

All real Dogs,Rats, and most of all Hogs would own and EDC a Busse foder for way too many reasons. Least of all because they finally made one!!!

They would have to do a run of several thousands of folders to put one in the hands of every one who wants, needs,or just have to have one...right?

When I stopped in London on my 2006 European tour, I went to go on the London Eye and the security guards tried to take my Benchmade 940. I was furious. I refused to get on the thing and demanded my money back, but they told me if I didn't give them the knife and kept causing trouble they'd call the cops and they would arrest me.

I noticed that they had a whole box full of confiscated SAKs. What exactly is the rule over there? A [censored] shame and I just couldn't believe it. What is the world coming to?

You and me both Tom, you and me both. It amazes me how people can believe all this stuff when the truth is out there and told by numerous folks, and "They" still won't believe. Guess I may have to be like that one lady and go back to eating beans and hotdogs (round about these hear parts we just call them beanie wennies)!

Or eat like the Hogs -- pork-flavored Ramen noodles!

They make a great lightweight meal for a pack as well, along with being good emergency food.

Didn't mean to sidetrack this thread, only SMALL fixed blade I've got is an Assault Shaker. But somehow the 2 1/5 inch blade seems about 1/2 inch to small. Sure wish it had a 3 inch blade.

I lived on Ramen Noodles in college...and try to avoid them now as a result .

I've had debates with people who look at evidence I provide, and then agree that its factual, but then turn around and REFUSE to believe it.

Its much easier for the sheeple to stay asleep, and take the blue pill daily. The red pill is harder to swallow, and most people would rather hope for the best than prepare for the worst.

As for me and mine.......

BUY IT CHEAP AND STACK IT DEEP

And you know what I'm referring to

I'd like to add the following to your list (which is a good start btw):

Police State
New World Order

Now you know why I live in Costa Rica...although its tough to get guns here, bummer. But knives are good to go!
