Scrap Yard Company Question(s) - 09/09/06 02:42 AM

OK, so Scrap Yard is using material left over by Busse Combat and Swamp Rat. I got that. However, the address shown on this web site is in Texas. So here is the question: Where is the shop? Is all of this left over material being shipped from Ohio to a shop in Texas, or is Texas the location of the office and the shop is in Ohio? Or maybe the shop and the office are in Ohio and the Texas address is just a mail drop?

It is not really important, I am just curious.

Another question, if Scrap Yard is using material left over from Busse Combat and Swamp Rat why are the blades made of SR-77? When did Jerry and Jennifer use SR-77? Will we see Scrap Yard blades made from INFI and SR101? I'm confused....

Re: Scrap Yard Company Question(s) - 09/09/06 03:49 AM

I heard that Scrap Yard is actually using steel from the hoods of Buicks manufactured between June of 1967 and March of 1974. Utilizing special processes and secret treatments they are able to turn out an exceptionaly strong knife steel at an incredible savings. Futhermore, seeing as no one would believe it they concocted some [censored] and bull story about "SR77" jack hammer tool steel. Personaly I dunno...it's just a story I heard from some Rat Bastid.

Re: Scrap Yard Company Question(s) - 09/09/06 03:51 AM

They are using the metal from the hulls of crashed UFO's!!

Or are they?

Good question Rich...I was wondering the same thing

Re: Scrap Yard Company Question(s) - 09/09/06 03:54 AM

Maybe SR-77 is just cans of CBL that have been crushed up and heat treated?

Re: Scrap Yard Company Question(s) - 09/09/06 05:08 AM

Considering that Swamp Rat Knifes is having a hard time making knifes on schedule ostensibly because it uses the same milling tools as Busse ( according to the SWK web site) and can only use it at night (so as not to tick off Busse Knife), what kind of delivery/production issues might we expect if Busse and SWK decide that their "garbage" is creating too much competition and therfore decide that the "garbage" is a "trade secret".

Could not Busse and SWK legally issue a "cease-and-desist" on Scrapyard Knifes causing a complete stopage in knife production untill resolved?

Technically garbage is not public domain until it has been physically removed from the owners premises and placed into a public area (landfill). The inital trash is still the legal property of the original owner. ( Based on my own business issues I know this )

My guess is that it is a more inexpensive steel that is used to keep costs down to be able to make the knives more affordable. That is why Res-C is being used, because it is cheaper than Micarta.

Many good questions here. I'll try to answer as many as I can.

Here are a few answers to your questions. Busse Knife Co. has used many steels in the past including D-2, A-2, 0-1, 440C, ATS-34, BG-42, 5160, etc. Pretty much every tool and cutlery grade steel out there. Jerry has always been a bit of a pack rat when it comes to steel and he has stockpiled quite a bit of it over the past 25 years. The SR-77 is just part of that stockpile.

Yes, you will be seeing SYKCO blades made from many different grades of steels from the Busse and Swamp Rat shops. We will be using most of the left over "drops" and other unused grades that are available from this stockpile.

Where are the knives made? Some of the work is done in Ohio and some of the work is done here in Texas.

Will we have regular stock? I doubt it. Releases of new models will be sporadic. Military orders will be given top priority as they are the primary focus of our line.

Now I'm thoroughly confused. I thought the Scrapyard's would be identical to the new line of Swamp Rats except with SR77 steel and Res-C handles instead of SR101 steel and micarta handles.

No. I wish we did, but the fact is that receiving an authorization number still does not guarantee that the monies will be deposited. That typically takes 3-5 business days. Gotta love the credit card companies.

Re: Scrap Yard Company Question(s) - 09/10/06 09:13 PM

This is really breaking my morale,
I was hoping that with the Scrapyard, the Busse family would get a little bit away from the one knife at a time custom shop type of operation and run a line of maybe three or four knive that people could choose from based on needs and results of other knives owned not just the opportunity to buy and the desire to own a Busse family knife.

Now that I have put my .02 in I have a question to ask on this question thread, is there any estimate as to when we would be able to get a sub 4" blade from the yard, folding would be a bonus, but I have room for a fixed also(it's a really small safe you see).

Thanks,
ps I almost fell out of my chair when I saw how affordable the knives currently being offered are, looks to me like the Scrapyard will empty out quick.

Re: Scrap Yard Company Question(s) - 09/10/06 09:24 PM

Hi Nate,

It is my understanding that the Scrap Yard and the Swamp will build up their offerings so that they have a choice of knives in inventory. The Scrapper 6 and M6 just being the first blades to be in stock. As far as what's next? I hope it's the Howler. OOH! or a Dog Shaker (Tail Wagger?)

Re: Scrap Yard Company Question(s) - 09/10/06 09:54 PM

That sounds good, being able to get a replacement for a knife allows for different uses, and mods. I know that if I am fond of a knife and there are no more available I would be more restrained as to how I use it than I would if I knew I could put an order in and get it replaced in a couple of weeks. It will also allow for a lot more gift giving, I also don't like to give a gift that I do not have first hand knowledge of, so after I try a couple out I may buy some for the guys in my family that are need of a blade.

Re: Scrap Yard Company Question(s) - 09/12/06 04:36 AM

Shouldn't it be pronounced like S-Ya-N-Co? If you pronounce the letters as they are spoken in the words they stand for:

S sound = Scrap
Ya sound = Y as it is pronounced in yard
N sound = Knife
Co sound = Company

Personally, I think "psycho" fits right in with a scrap yard dog's personality !

Dogg, I am waiting for that email! This is the stressful part of it...other than paying for it all!.....I sure could use another knife! But at what point is it toooooo many? I actually would like to start making some of my own..might try to get some basic equipment for that. I am thinking of asking her to just let me go to KNob Creek for my birthday.....the shoot is the weekend after so it may work out!

Re: Scrap Yard Company Question(s) - 09/18/06 11:28 PM

GF -- I would love to do that as well -- make some stock-removal pieces. that would be insane -- i'm actually trying to find a deal on a bader BIII or an old burr-king that i can go in on with a few friends -- i'd prolly make some crazy thing out of 1/2" thick S5 and have Paul Bos do the heat treat -- hey it would be cheaper than having an artist make one custom... what kind of blades would you make?
Posted By: Gravelface

Re: Scrap Yard Company Question(s) - 09/18/06 11:45 PM

I like drop point choppers....I contacted Bos after I bought some steel...only to find out he doesn't HT that particular one.....His prices are VERY good especially if you have about 15-20 going in at 1 time.

Oh the trouble I am in........If I could stop getting new knives...I could get some decent equipment! SKs Howling Rats, FBM, crash axe......it doesn't stop! Thats it! I am gonna sell 40% of my knives to fund equipment cost. And get to Knob Creek...and maybe 1 of them new smogs...>>ARRGGHH!!!! I can't help myself!

The worst thing that could happen is for infi to get ensconced as the default steel here, just to fill a demand that the other company can't meet, at the expense of innovation -- To promise S7 in the mission statement and go back to infi after one model would definitely be seen as selling out. Then someone else will put out a big chopper in S7 and it will outperform everything else on the market and the Scrap Yard will have missed the window of opportunity to put itself on the map (a window that gets smaller every day that passes without a new model)...

Re: Scrap Yard Company Question(s) - 10/01/06 01:06 PM

The bowie should be the priority here, *IF* the INFI shorty can be done too great.. My interest in INFI is due to its alledged corrosion and abrasion resistance, add a dog price tag to a medium sized INFI knife and stand by to conquer the world.. Meantime big SR77 please Dan!

Team SYKCO

Now I'm thoroughly confused. I thought the Scrapyard's would be identical to the new line of Swamp Rats except with SR77 steel and Res-C handles instead of SR101 steel and micarta handles.

Many if not most will be identical in blade shape but the materials used will vary.
