(This post is also at the Swamp)

In a previous thread I mentioned testing one of my new Rodent Solutions. Today the testing began in the kitchen.

This morning I decided to make a pot of delicious Spicy Taco Soup....

INGREDIENTS

[Linked Image from i56.tinypic.com]

(4 Cans) Hot Rotel
(1 Can) Mexican Diced Tomatoes
(1 Can) Pinto Beans
(1 Can) Red Kidney Beans
(1 Can) White Corn - DRAINED
(1 Can) Black Beans - DRAINED & THOROUGHLY RINSED
(1 Pouch) Ranch Mix
(1/4 Cup) Taco Seasoning
(2 to 3 Pounds) Chicken

If you don't like really spicy...substitute the "Regular" Rotel for "Hot" Rotel PLUS add one small can of "Green Chillies".

DIRECTIONS

1) Pour all canned goods into a Crock Pot (complete with the can's liquid UNLESS it says to drain or drain & rinse).

2) Stir in Ranch dip powder.

3) Stir in Taco powder.

4) Boil chicken and shred it thoroughly.

5) Add chicken to Crock Pot,

6) Stir everything together and cook on high for several hours.

My First RS Review....

I used the RS to shred the boiled chicken and trim out the fat.

1) The knife is not a "parring knife" because of the blade thickness. It is, however, outstandingly sized for typical "other" kitchen chores.

2) The handle is COMFORTABLE to use. In the past, while shredding the two to three pounds of chicken for this recipe my hands have grown tired. The RS did not fatigue me at all.

HOWEVER...one edge of the canvas scales was a little sharp (see picture below). This area "dug into" the fatty portion of my palm, 15 seconds with fine sandpaper knocked the edge off and its no longer an issue.

3) The edge retention is superb - like all SR101!

After thoroughly washing the knife with soap and water I coated the blade with Organic Olive Oil. This is another test as I fully intend to EDC this blade. As a result it will be used to cut up fruit (etc) at work on a daily basis.

This will be interesting, because it is a "safe to eat" lubricant.

The Rodent Solution easily passed this first test. It will continue to be used and reported upon. Hopefully the testing severity will increase soon.....

NOTE: My hands are wet in the pic showing the "sharp spot" on the scales. I did this to wet the area so it would show up better for the pic.

Here she is cleaned, lube'd and ready for EDC....

I wanted to reiterate the "spicy" warning. This soup is SPICY if you use the "Hot" Rotel. If you're sensitive to "fire engine hot" <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" /> soup then please substitute regular Rotel.

Hehe...Awesome...Though I find my Shun set far superior to any Bussekin for most kitchen-oriented tasks...

Someone at the Swamp advised against using Olive Oil as a coating/lubricant. I need to find something "edible" to use.

Veggie oil maybe? How about mineral oil?

Hey Arch, you should post your recipe on the cook book thread!

I say mineral oil.

Great review, Gary!

Just out of curiosity and because I don't know, WHY not Olive Oil?

Unlike saturated fats, olive oil will go rancid over time is likely why.

Yep, use mineral oil. Use it on your cutting board also <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Nice review Arch! I'm looking forward to my tan handled RS....and a sheath.

Some nice sheaths over on the SwampRat section of BF. Armorall Leather will be having some at the company store soon. Nice looking sheaths too if you like leather.

I'd rather have leather than kydex myself, so I'm going with one of those when they get posted.

Thank You for the pics. The soup looks great <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Mineral oil is best, from what I have read. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Arch, that looks like an awesome pot of food. Now me, I like spicey, but the ulcer doesn't so I would have to go with the unleaded fuel version.

I will be doing the same mod to my RS as soon as I get some good sandpaper. Been meaning to to it for a while now.

Thanks for the review.

Thanks everyone. This batch turned out well, but it is HOT <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" />.

The Olive Oil was advised against as adamlau said, because it will go rancid. I googled "food grade mineral oil" and read a lot of conflicting information. I'm not sure what to do at this point - I may just leave the blade "nekkid" and check it daily.

Ish - you're going to love your RS. Both of mine have tan handles (one black blade and one sage blade...which will be safe queened). I like the RS enough that I'm considering adding a third.

Al - Out of the 15+/- sheaths I have of yours, this one is my favorite. The seaming and fit are perfect <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Jeff - you DEFINITELY want the unleaded version if you have an ulcer! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />
