New WAR Dog Offering - 05/27/11 05:24 PM

Dogs:

I had to drink a lot of Blue with Boss Hog to get my hands on this scrap INFI steel but the hangovers were worth it. This knife is willing and ready since it sports a newly designed Resiprene C handle. The ScrapYard War Dog has a .235" thick full height flat ground INFI steel blade. The hand applied satin finished blade features a blended convex zero-edge for excellent cutting power and strength. This combination provides an incredible feel that you will not want to put down. It is priced at $179.95 plus shipping and handling. There is a limited number so when they are gone they are gone.

Here are the specs for the War Dog

Overall Length: 9 3/4"
Blade Length: 5"
Steel: INFI
Hardness: 58-60 RC
Grind: Full Height Flat Grind
Weight: 6.2 ounces

Expect this to go up on the site today or worst case tomorrow. Best of luck getting in on this one

All those pages of excitement and it seems like everyone just left for an early Memorial Day vacation without seeing the release.

I think the War Dog is a fitting tribute to all men in uniform that made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

I think they would like some pics also.

YES INDEEDY IT DOES! Now I can order two or three I assume a PMO will work? Can a dog be cut a little slack time to get the money in the mail? I'll probably be hitting the road for a week or so for work shortly after Blade ends, which will be right about the time these things ship. Will need to get to the Post Office after I get back.

OH BOY I AM SALIVATING!

I Like the shallow sweep of the belly, for me, it makes it a whole lot easier to sharpen on a strop. It maybe that i'm not that great on a strop, but i always have trouble where the edge starts to curve on deeper bellied convex blades.

Re: New WAR Dog Offering - 05/28/11 12:04 AM

Sand paper/mouse pad works too. I just reprofiled my first blade that way. A Gerber Freeman in S30V that had an insanely dull edge and a wickedly squirrely secondary bevel. The mouse pad worked well--reprofiled as I sat through one sitcom. Now I'm trying to get it sharp. Probably could've taken it down to a much finer grit paper but I'm trying to strong arm it on a strop with the aggressive abrasive May go back to paper for a bit. S30V is some hard stuff to work with!

All this is tangential of course since the WAR DOG has a CONVEX SECONDARY BEVEL! Woo Hoo!

Re: New WAR Dog Offering - 05/28/11 01:31 AM

I had a DMDC and have a S5LE. I loved the full flat grind on the DM and the S5 is sweat but a saber grind. I think the War Dog will be the perfect combo of the two. Plus I have been debating hard about giving up the S5LE and I think this bad boy maybe more my taste.
Posted By: D-Math

Re: New WAR Dog Offering - 05/28/11 01:35 AM

I EDC The DMDC, and Feel like I could use it as a prybar. With the 1 inch narrowness of the war dog, i dunno about it being a prybar. I think i could edc the war dog, and use the DMDC as a camp, hiking knife. or a work knife, If only they let us carry knives at work (>_<)

Re: New WAR Dog Offering - 05/28/11 01:58 AM

I really like the new grip shape and realized I've seen something similar and that is the SRK by cold steel. I've always been drawn to that knife but never got one, now with Dan's infi and Res-c I think this could be one of the hottest releases. It's a shame it will be a limited run, I hope all of us that want one can get one.

Tobo, you just put it in the cart from the store page, unless this is different from all the rest. If you need to pay with a PMO, I believe you send an email to that effect.

I can wear a scrapizashi on my belt in public in Cali.

Or a 12" folder concealed in my pocket or bag(or any size folder in my pocket for that matter, as long as the pocket or bag is big enough)

Yeah thats the one,CS SRK.
I always wanted one until I found Bussekins.
This'll be even better,infi & res c.
Glad I never pulled the trigger on one.
I'll surley pull the trigger on the War Dog though.
I even sold my S5 & BogDog just to make sure I can get one or two.
Dan really suprised me with this one.
I'm already thinking of shortening the finger guard a bit.Just a little bit.
I'm not saying I don't like the finger guard, just wondering what it would look like a little shorter.
I wonder if there is metal under the res c in the guard.Hmmmmm, probably not.

Brother and Sister Dogs,

I ask you.

How do you fix the wear and tear on your finger? It is the same if you push the F5 key or the refresh button with your mouse.

Sadly all of this damage to the paws of many dogs out there could have been avoided!

So Mr. Dan I plead with you to post this blade to the sales page so we can stop the destruction and we can all comiserate together with our bretheren as we bask in the infi and res-c goodness.

Remember the faithful and if that doesn't work. Do it for the children.

Noticed that one the Knives page the specs list cutting edge as 3". Must be a carry over from Scrapivore specs.

Specs at a glance:

Overall Length: 9.75"
Blade Length: 5.0"
Cutting Edge Length: 3"
Blade Width: 1 1/8"
Thickness: Approx: .235"

They are not going to make 50-60 if they invested in the mold for a new handle. The cost for that is pretty high so they will have to put out a few knives to recoup that expenditure. Will they all be INFI? I doubt it, I think we'll see this new style handle for awhile on new models.

I think that the handle is too slender for the offered blade. Put a slim blade on it and it would be hot. Make it out of SR101 and sell a zillion of them. The price point would fit my budget better, also. Oh, and some gimping on the spine would be cool. Thank you.

Hey dogs, new guy here, the war dog is going to be my first INFI blade, is the rust resistance going to be better then 1095 or even sr-101?

Welcome! Infi is way less rust prone than sr-101. It's almost stainless but not quite.

If this were a busses knife it would be at least $250.

I'm also curious as to how many are going to be made just because I want to. I thought about getting a tan one also but I don't really need two and I'm not about ordering extras to resale, I notice that seems to go on alot with busse knives over on the blade forum.

I never said that it was priced badly or that I didn't want it; on the contrary, it is a bargain and very, very nice. It is still a lot of money to some of us. I was merely dreaming about a less expensive version in my price range. Sorry to have offended you.

New poster here and new Scrap Yard/Swamp Rat fan! Bought a Ratmandu last week and love it! Now I see this INFI offering and just had to grab it.

I just placed an order and got an invoice, so I hope they ship quickly because I can't wait to try this one out. If INFI is a great as everyone says, I am sure I'll be pleased. I prefer my fixed blades in the 4 - 5 inch range so this is perfect.

Too many what if's if one is going to wait for a CG, not saying that Dan might make one. The S5 is a good example as it was a SR101 blade with coating and handle options while the S5LE is Infi and black handle. Who knows, Dan does but none of us do.

the cg was just a speculation, nobody take it as truth! dont trust me! XD

i *really* dont need one now as someone offered me a trade for my microtech i never use for a custom mike irie ts-5..

so now i have two 5" blades already XD

its definitely a need vs want scenario and i want it but dont need the knife.

now i need a chopper as my largest blade is the dumpster mutt (well the mark irie is gonna be .5" longer so now that will be).. and eric at the swamp said theyre coming with something "bigger"

Re: New WAR Dog Offering - 05/31/11 03:22 AM

Pretty sure they stop taking orders when they run out. Never heard of anyone getting an order confirmation and no blade.

My guess is to honor the warranty there is always the ability to make a few more than they sell.

Re: New WAR Dog Offering - 05/31/11 04:09 AM

My credit card shows a pending charge for the amount of the WD.

I am somewhat new to knives, and have never owned a bussekin. I ordered the war dog somewhat blindly, as I didn't want to miss out on the opportunity to obtain my first piece of infi.

After reading through some of the posts on the new knife, I saw the post that stated the knife was 1" from spine to edge. Based on my experience with the knives that I own, 1" is very short. My knives (including folders,) range from 1 3/8" to 1 3/4" at their thickest.

I suppose my question to the more seasoned knife users is what a thinner blade like this will be useful for? What applications do you intend on using your WD for?

It seems to me like it is a mix between a stealthy killer and a bushcraft knife.
Posted By: Jroden5446

Re: New WAR Dog Offering - 05/31/11 04:15 AM

It's seems to be alot like a basic 5, which is an awesome knife( kind of a small handle on the b5) it seems to be a general use/ hiking knife that will take any abuse/ use you can throw at it
Posted By: Pilot

Re: New WAR Dog Offering - 05/31/11 05:29 AM

I am going to use my WD for an all purpose woods knife. My CC got dinged too which is fine, as that means its going to ship soon. I am glad to know its on the way as I can't wait!

Will we be getting a shipping notice with a tracking number? Thanks!

This is the reason why I haven't jumped on this knife, the blade shape and handles look great, but in my opinion the dimensions are off. The blade is too thick for its width (too short). I think in many applications the spine would hit the edge before the cut is complete. But I know this knife wasn't designed for the kitchen or bush, it was designed as an all around beater! I'd jump on this so quick if it was 1-2 years ago, but I have enough indestructible SY knives, and I'm more into thinner knives these days. But dogs are loyal and I'm still a SY guy at heart, so I'll wait patiently for thinner knife, hopefully with SS4 style blade and new handles. If it came in 154CM, it'd be my official kitchen/bush/bbq/beater knife!

Re: New WAR Dog Offering - 05/31/11 09:16 AM

I think this knife will serve best as a combat knife, hence the name. Soldiers and Marines are pretty hard on their knives in the field and a knife like the War Dog would be right up their alley.

Re: New WAR Dog Offering - 05/31/11 09:32 AM

Finnish puukko usually has < 1" wide blade. In the old days puukko was an all around tool, kitchen knife and a negotiator in complex social confrontations.

Nowadays puukko is used as a woods/hunting/fishing knife and is wery good in wood carving. Puukko has quite thin blade and it's often about 4" -5"long.

My first impression when I saw the WD was it's a puukko. Well American made puukko. WD has also details of a fighting knife. Drop point, thick blade, finger guard and a gap between cutting edge and finger guard.

Because I wasn't here for the Muk I think the WD is a brilliant knife to be my first SY!

I got my credit card dinged already! I thought these would be a ways out.

It takes about 4 days for charges to show up on my card. Was it a charge or a hold?

Any word from Renee? While I will be excited to get this sooner, I had been budgeting for late June. No big deal if either happens.

You and I are in the same boat, my friend. My wife's gonna kill me when she sees this charge on our check card this morning. Oh well, I'll die happy.

You will need to pay at the time of shippment...when the credit cards are charged. I suspect we will ship shortly after Blade Show if everything goes right....does this help?

yes and no, this is not a complaint as I can't wait to get the blade but it people are planning on being charged after blade show and the charges come early it could screw people's finances up, this has happened to me in the past. Again not a complaint just an observation

I would like SY to offer Kydex sheaths for the War Dog like those for the Scrapivore at a similar price.

I have many Mashed Cat sheaths and have been very happy with each.....

as well as those I've purchased from Rainwalker and Buy Brown.

I think this knife will serve best as a combat knife, hence the name. Soldiers and Marines are pretty hard on their knives in the field and a knife like the War Dog would be right up their alley.

I think your right, but I also think it will be used for some bushcraft duties. This is exactly the blade I was hoping for.

The war dog is a awesome looking knife. Is the cutting edge 3" or is it longer?
Posted By: KENKEN

Re: New WAR Dog Offering - 06/01/11 02:46 AM

I think it was a typo. The cutting edge should be a bit over 4" taking the blade is 5".

Re: New WAR Dog Offering - 06/01/11 06:56 AM

I agree that this is exactly the knife I was hoping for also.

I read on another forum that the 3 inch cutting edge was a typo and it should be more like 4 3/4 cutting edge - if I remember right it was posted either by Jerry Busse on a Busse forum maybe on Bladeforums.com or in Swamp Rat knifes forum by Eric - its been a long weekend if you know what I mean.

To me the thickness isn't an issue - .235 is only about 3/64ths thicker than 3/16th or .1875 and most people like 3/16ths for a blade thickness.

The real plus is its a nice thick infi knife in a great size - sort of a Super Pukko or Super Mora.

Re: New WAR Dog Offering - 06/01/11 06:59 AM

The blade dimensions remind me a bit of a fallkniven s1. If memory serves me correctly the S1 has a 5" blade, .20" spine and is approximately 1" from edge to spine (maybe a bit taller.) The S1 is marketed as an all around survival/woods knife, and I'm thinking the war dog will be equally suitable for such tasks, granted the war dog sports better steel and potentially a better/more ergonomic handle.

I thought the same thing about the likeness to the Fallkniven S1 when I saw it. I have an F1 and have been thinking of getting an S1, but this will satisfy that nitch for a while (along with my recently acquired RMD).

This is my first post. I'm new here and have yet to get a bussekin blade. I've been lurking for about a year but just got an account. I was tempted to get the deregulator but wanted to hold out for something different. The war dog looks really good and infi would be awesome to get, but I want to continue waiting for the blade that really sings to me. I was hoping for a chopper. The price doesn't help my situation either (graduated from college two years ago and have a truck-load of student loans). Anyway, thought I would stop "lurking" in the shadows and say hi.

Re: New WAR Dog Offering - 06/01/11 09:58 PM

Hello all, I saw this posted in the knives thread in the off-topic section of another forum I frequent. Known about Bussekin and Infi for a while but never actually caught a knife I liked while it was for sale.

I have owned an Uncle Mojo, but only long enough to trade it for an M4 AFCK folder. Anyway, just bought 2 of these with black handles.

I have to say, I didn't like it at first glance, but the Infi drew me in. Always wanted to try it. Then the more I looked at it and read about it, the more I realized that this was a pretty perfect configuration.
The two fixed blades on my list to purchase are a Bravo 1 and an ESEE 5 and this seems like a combo between the two of them. Shaped similarly to the Bravo 1 and beefy like the ESSE. Part of me wishes it was bigger, but the Mojo was too big for me to actually use/carry for anything so I talked myself into this one and I'm sure I won't regret it.

I may try to trade one of these away towards a Camp Tramp or Scrapper 6 though.

Glad to finally get my first SY though!

My brother Dan has many plans for this handle and many of those will be much thinner. Not INFI, but MUCH thinner SR-101 designs at a much lower price. I am sure that some of those designs will fill the need for those who desire a thinner blade.

I wonder if SR-77 is done as the flagship of Scrapyard. It seems most of the new blades are SR-101, 154 CM, or INFI. Only the Scrapizashi has been SR-77 lately. Maybe it'll be just for the larger blades and the smaller ones will be SR-101 or 154 CM.

That's what people say, but honestly, who is going to be able to really tell the performance difference unless doing a scientific test? All materials perform very well as knives when treated correctly.

I feel that the rust resistance of INFI is the biggest consideration for me as I prefer naked steel.

Honestly, the war dog is more exciting to me than the Busse Muk I just got.

Dan

The number of knives left is very small and will run out in the very near future.

Congrats to all the Dog's who got in on this one.

It is a great blade guys, the zero convex edge helps to combat the stock thickness while still feeling indestructible, if you are on the fence, jump before they are gone and you are kicking yourself and paying jacked up aftermarket prices

The number of knives left is very small and will run out in the very near future.

Congrats to all the Dog's who got in on this one.

Enjoy

Dan

thanks for the headsup, Dan, that was VERY cool of you. I only wish I had popped my head in here Friday night, as this surely would have spawned a 2nd order from me.

I love the WD. You're right, it is a classic!
