Exercised some Busse Kin

Exercised some Busse Kin - 07/26/11 06:47 AM

Went up to mom’s cabin to do some chores and spend some time with her. Figured that I might as well bring some steel and stock up on kindling. I had just received an Ontario RD-7 to go in the new Get Home Bag. This time, it will be secured a little better in the camper, but not too expensive if some creep gets it again. There was no time to convex it like the others, but it was pretty sharp as is. The RD-7 did everything asked of it, but the 3/16 1075 required some work to baton it through the thicker wood. The handle feels like a 1x2 board with a few sharp edges at each end.
The B11 was the star of the project, powering through any reasonable log, great ergonomics. It will be the first choice in camp. All of the Busse Kin, with their ¼ thick blades, batoned through the pine and juniper with relative ease. The NMSFNO has the better feeling handle over the Ratweiler, But for some reason I just enjoyed using the Rat more. All the blades held their edges well with no apparent dulling but there was one casualty with the NMSFNO. On a particularly tough knot, the edge chipped out . I suppose I may have thinned it out a bit much, but I was surprised and bummed to say the least. It was a pleasant weekend with mom and got to play with my knives to.

When I first read the title I thought you had been banishing evil spirits from your knives.

Great pics, looks like you had a fun time!

You sure you didn't hit an old nail or staple in that wood?

I'm sure it's possible, I just remember one particular piece of juniper with a knot and thinking what have I got myself into!

Very nice pics. I would not have expected NMSFNO to chip out like that. Bummer.

Nice pics and nice set of blades. I am surprised at the nmsfno but it is possible you hit a nail or something...or the edge may have been too thin...Stuff happens. It'll take some grinding to get that edge back.
