Stripping And Bluing Project - CHECK IT OUT!

Stripping And Bluing Project - CHECK IT OUT! - 07/31/11 09:05 PM

I found this thread a couple of weeks ago and thought it would be fun to try.
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showth...ht=junglas+mods

I thought it would be best to try it on a couple of small blades first, and I'm very happy with the results.

One thing that didn't quite turn out the way I had hoped was the Rodent Solution. It started life with a Moss Green coating with Black Paper scales. The Moss Green has dimples like a golf ball, and some of the dimples are deep enough to come VERY close to the steel. I thought this might be an issue, but I was too lazy to trim the painters tape around the Swamp Rat logo before I painted the blade so the etching solution found the dimples and etched the dimples right into the steel. I don't think it looks too bad though.

Something I didn't expect, the INFI on the SS4 wouldn't take the Perma Blue. The decarb layer where the flats are soaked it right up though, and gave it an accidental two tone finish. I'm really happy with it

On with the pics. Forgot to take WIP pics, but the steps are the same as in the thread above.

Comments welcome.

I saw that on the original post with the junglas and loved Look. Yours are fantastic.
Great job!

Thanks!

I forgot to mention that since the logos on the RS and SS4 are so much more intricate than the Junglas, I didn't let them soak in the etching solution for nearly as long. Only about 12 hours.

Looks great, gives me ideas and makes me want to do more work to my blades. Nice job!

While that SS4 is really striking the way the blue just took to the flats.

Those look great. Is that a patina around the handle on the SS4?

Nice job on the blades. Although I've never tried it myself, I've always heard that INFI doesn't take to bluing like Carbon steel will.

good idea by the way i recommend stripping and blue to all blades <<<<<<<seriously hate the powder coat it drags really bad on everything. just sucks that the blades have those stupid imperfections on them. makes me wonder if they are drop forged or something.

Hey, it wouldn't bother me if they just ground them out and sharpened them! Maybe put a coating under the Res-c, or not. The tight fit of the Res-C will probably keep any liquids from getting under the grips.

Hey that's a thought. Just grind em sharpen em slip on the handles and ship em out.

DAN, You should do a poll!

Nice job, Spider-Pig. And thanks for posting the thread from BF. I missed it since I spend very little time there. BryFry's Junglas is stunning.

Great job, knives look awesome...

I done stacks of Stainless Steel engraving, has anyone tried using 'Pickling Paste' on their knives?

Pickling Paste?

Re: Stripping And Bluing Project - CHECK IT OUT! - 08/01/11 08:00 AM

Is that like a thick paste you make out of pickling salt?
Posted By: zuluXtreme

Re: Stripping And Bluing Project - CHECK IT OUT! - 08/01/11 08:03 AM

YA! It's thickish wellowish stuff, almost like melting jelly... You buy it ready made, the welding specialists normally sell it...

The stuff is highly corrosive, the longer you leave it on the steel the deeper it 'eats'. Of course the fumes given off are extremely harsh.

Re: Stripping And Bluing Project - CHECK IT OUT! - 08/01/11 08:06 AM

Ok, I thought you were talking about pickling salt for canning foods!

That stuff is a sort of a cleaning solution, right?

I mean it is acidic?

Re: Stripping And Bluing Project - CHECK IT OUT! - 08/01/11 08:07 AM

Ok, NOW I know the stuff you're talking about. Yeah I bet that would work out nice.

YUP! In a big way... I've been able to etch Stainless Steel down a few mm's a time...

Re: Stripping And Bluing Project - CHECK IT OUT! - 08/01/11 08:12 AM

I'm still thinking about the hot bleach thing for my spare cupidvore. Or my main one once I get some more finish wore off it. Once I get the entire pry bar tip scratched an scraped free of a finish I will probably grind down the top edge just a tad to make it just a little bit rounded.

Re: Stripping And Bluing Project - CHECK IT OUT! - 08/01/11 08:13 AM

I use to cut stencils out of vinyl, stick them onto the Stainless, reverse weed them and then drip the paste and then leave it on the stencil for a few minutes. You won't belive how nice it looks once you've removed the stencil and buffed the Stainless, stunning to say the least...

Of course if you want it deeper then just do it again until you have the desired depth.

Re: Stripping And Bluing Project - CHECK IT OUT! - 08/01/11 08:17 AM

Reverse Weed? Does that mean you remove the letters but leave the rest of the stencil in place?

Re: Stripping And Bluing Project - CHECK IT OUT! - 08/01/11 09:29 AM

Very nice. I have thought about stripping the DDF that has some serious finish gone and doing a bluing job. Just got to get the nads to do it.

Re: Stripping And Bluing Project - CHECK IT OUT! - 08/01/11 10:28 AM

YUP! That's it, as long as you aren't in a rush and don't leave the paste on too long the process can be repeated numerous times without the integrity of the vinyl being compromised...

You could custom design the surface of the steel to anything you wanted...

I've also just dipped Stainless into the paste and left it for a while just to see what the outcome would be. And looking at some of the finishes here, it would compare favourably...
