Price of second hand dogs! I feel like griping,

Price of second hand dogs! I feel like griping, - 08/04/11 07:55 AM

So this is part me being jealous and part me whining. I really want a DogFather but the exchange prices are out of control. I want a user I don't care about having a safe queen. I want a chopper I can go beat on. I swore to myself that I would make a DF my next buy. But I have'nt seen one for less than 250 in months and even a user that has been beat on a little. I did see one for 100 or 150 that would have been perfect but a dealer who was selling one in the post below it for 200 or so bought it then relisted it a week later for 50 bucks more.
Now I'm not upset that that guy is making money cause if thats how he pays the bills well thats awesome. But it kinda sucks that these things are getting so pricey. I just saw a DFle that sold for $425 today. How are us pound pupies supposed to play?

Well this is just me being angry. Thanks for listening. -Jason

Yeah, I want a DF as well (would be my first sy)....They sure have increased in price.... Don't really wanna have to fork over $250 for a knife that sold for what 140/150?

Jason
Sometimes you just get lucky and are at the right place at the right time.
My very first purchase was from a fellow dog on the exchange. He actually
sold me the knife at his cost. I was grateful and will someday pass on the
favor.
From what I understand, people won't part with 'em because they are so well
liked. This leaves the dealers free to demand higher prices.
Keep your chin up, your DF will show his wet nose to you soon.

Re: Price of second hand dogs! I feel like griping, - 08/04/11 02:26 PM

Yeah. I have the same gripes. I would love to go back in time and get a DFLE and a Scrapmuk at cost, but that's not going to happen.

I'm sure there are collectors out there with 20 Dog Fathers in a box. That's animal cruelty!

I have to keep reminding myself that there are some good people out there that aren't in it for the money and are willing to sell an extra blade at cost just to spread SY goodness.

Hopefully you and I will someday get our SY grails at a decent price.

When I went to Blade last year, there were 4 Dogfathers laying on the table when I got to the booth. I had one in my hand and decided not to buy it for $140. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" /> I ended up paying $200 for the one I have now and count myself lucky to have found it for that.

I hear yah man. I have been wanting a Son of Dogfather for quite sometime. But when they show up for $200 I just cant pay that knowing what they went for originally. Hopefully the 11 line will satisfy alot of wants seeing as there are choppers and all. I just hope there are more colors than black.

It is hard to pay over retail for any item but it is also good to know these quality Bussekin hold value so well.

Re: Price of second hand dogs! I feel like griping - 08/04/11 04:53 PM

The problem is not that you would be buying a $160 knife for $240. The problem is that you can (eventually) buy a $240 knife for $160.

Basically you are buying direct from the factory thanks to the Busse business structure. If you consider what the markup would be for the same knives if they went retail then you would be paying just about same as the secondary prices. Maybe a little less...

If you knew what WalMart paid for the the stuff they sold you'd probably be sick. As it is you know what most of the guys in the exchange probably paid for the knives. IMHO the knives are worth those exchange prices for the most part and that's why the markup exists. I'm actually happy that Busse Kin knives can maintain such a high value and it also means they will be doing business until the warranty runs out.

Re: Price of second hand dogs! I feel like griping - 08/04/11 04:55 PM

People will sell things for what people will pay. Many are selling them to make some $ and they aren't going to sell them for what they paid for them...unless they are truly just looking to get their money back. If no one paid $400 for a DF then no one would sell them for that but people are willing to pay higher prices to get these blades that are no longer available. I've only sold one knife on BF but I do plan to sell more eventually, and the plan is to make some money. Just keep an eye out and you can eventually find a good deal. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Re: Price of second hand dogs! I feel like griping - 08/04/11 04:59 PM

Paying more than retail is common for many things like rare cars, knives, guns, etc. But retail goes out the window when your talking about something that is no longer made. Who cares what a 57 Chevy retailed for? You ain't going to pay that now for one unless its a complete rust bucket. Anyway- You have to put things in perspective. And the truth of it is...if there are lots of folks out there that want to pay $300 for DF's then thats what they will sell for and those that hate to pay over what they originally sold for will be out of luck. I know it sucks but that's how it works. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Re: Price of second hand dogs! I feel like griping - 08/04/11 09:50 PM

Best thing to do is wait until the next big show (it'll be tough waiting but it really is the best thing to do) and get a proxy. There are a handful of dogs here that that always seem more than happy to proxy for the other dogs here. If you ever get really tempted to spend a bunch of money on an overpriced secondary market Bussekin then go to the knifemakers part of the exchange at BF and get yourself something handmade, my personal favorite is G L Drew. That's what I do and I've always been glad I did it.

Just try and be patient.

Isn't there a 911 coming out this year? I assume that's going to be similar to the 511 but bigger, presumably Dogfather size? I'm guessing it'll be a big chopper that will stand up to anything short of driving into a brick wall and using it as a ladder rung. I'd just wait for that if I wanted a big chopper.

In the meantime get a 511 and beat on that to your heart's content. Any of these Busse knives are probably way ahead of knives people depending on for thousands of years with much harder use than any of us will ever put them to.

Re: Price of second hand dogs! I feel like griping, - 08/05/11 12:06 AM

Getting out our frustrations is good. And who better to "Gripe" to than those who understand what you're talking about.

I've been there as well Jason, as a buyer and a seller. But the more times a "Secondary market" blade has been sold the more it's gonna cost. Just like below.

ORIGINAL BUYER
Original cost 100.00
S&H 12.00
TOTAL 112.00
---------------------
SECOND BUYER
above prices 112.00
plus ten bucks 10.00
anything else 25.00
plus S&H 12.00
TOTAL 159.00
---------------------
THIRD BUYER
All the above 159.00
cost or ten 10.00
anything else .00
S&H 12.00
TOTAL 181.00

It all adds up in a hurry. I went to buy something once and realized it went just about like my example. And I said I ain't gonna pay half as much again as the original cost, that's to much of a markup! (it wasn't a knife) All I was looking at was the ORIGINAL cost and how much it was gonna cost me to get it to me. I didn't take into account all the other charges, that the seller has every right to recoup.

Like I said, I've griped and complained and will do it again, but we (YUP ME) sometimes forget how many hands it has passed through before it lands in ours.

Maybe this will help you out some, I know it has me just by typing it!

Now don't get me wrong, there are some scalpers out there and personally I think they should be avoided like the plague! But most of the folks are not trying to take anyone.

AND I don't think any dog here will, at least intentionally, take advantage of another dog.

I hope this doesn't sound like a sermon because it wasn't meant to be, just an
explanation.

Oh, one last thing. It doesn't matter what something cost, IF YOU are satisfied with the price you paid, then that is all that matters. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

+1 to Lazi....well said sir.

+1 to Aimless as well...wait on the SYKCO 911, or get a Basic 10 from Busse when they release.

Takeaway from your whining: Buy more than one SYKCO 511 now <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Re: Price of second hand dogs! I feel like griping, - 08/05/11 03:13 AM

I just try to be patient. I suspect that Bussekin will be producing knives for many more years to come. Who knows what wonderfullness they will release?
I had to realize that as much as I want a Dogfather, I could buy a 911 and something else for the same money. Who knows that the "something else" won't be something totally radical from Bussekin?

Re: Price of second hand dogs! I feel like griping, - 08/05/11 03:27 AM

The same thing! I have looked for the dog father for over six monthes, all with the same bad price. I was going to go out side of the yard and get a Esee Junglas
then I heard of the 911. SOOO now I have to wait and see what comes out of the dog house this time. I have hard time getting online and only can make it to the library or McD's a couple times a week to check the sites. I have missed a few Dog fathers by hours and a few by days:( It sucks but lets see what happens with the 911.

I've been very lucky with some of the prices I've found on blades, but I also refresh the exchange about 30 times a day. Keep at it until your number comes up, or something else comes along. Just remember that today's $250 may be tomorrows $270.

Re: Price of second hand dogs! I feel like griping, - 08/05/11 05:13 AM

I totally understand what you all are talking about.

When I first came to the yard I wanted a S6 baaaad! I had to wait 6 months (I kept missing the offers <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" /> )

but I got one, and more blade-models and more and more! They are really great blades to have and it was waaay worth it.

The S6 and Dogfather are Scrapyard flagships, and they came out often, and I hope they still will.

I suggest (and no promises here! not from me and of course the people who make them) keep asking, keep talking about it in threads and on your Santa-lists!

One great thing about Dan is he listens to us, he really really does, and I think he appreciates us (the Yard, the Dawgs) too!

And maybe, just maybe he will treat all you newer Dawgs to some good ole Yard Cooking and bring them back again.

you can only try and beg! lol

so Good Luck Dawgs and keep talking about it! (salute)

The way that the Busse Kin stuff is done is a process that works for them. And for the most part it works for those who are diligent. It's not perfect, but you get used to it. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> I'm always glad to know that the knives I have increase in value, instead of decrease like so many other things I own... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/sad.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I know he doesn't mean me; even including my DFLEs, I'm still a couple shy of that. Although who knows, it could be me after the next Knob Creek. I'm holding onto what I have, but it's been several months since any secondary market prices have tempted me. The markup on many of those knives would have you thinking the economy was booming -- I saw a Rat Daddy up for over $500 today; it's priced at nearly what I spent for my KZ2 (after tax).

I understand your griping. I have overpaid for for Busse kin knives in the past because I wanted it bad enough and I had the money at the time. I will not be doing that any more since I got laid off a few months ago after working for a company for 20 years and had to accept another job at a much lower pay rate. From now on I will have to save my spare change and wait for the production releases.

Re: Price of second hand dogs! I feel like griping, - 08/05/11 02:55 PM

I wasn't talking about anyone in particular. Just like the OP, I'm just griping.

People are entitled to own whatever they want, and if you have close to 20 DogFathers you're one lucky dog. My comment, though somewhat facetious, is that I think it's sad that awesome blades are sitting somewhere when they could be out in the woods doing what they were made to do. That being said, I understand why you would want to collect something that has so much value. I definitely don't have a gripe against collectors. I also agree with everyone that it's pretty awesome that Dan's blades increase in value so much over time. It's a free market and people can pay/charge whatever they wish.

Sure I'd love to go back in time and snag a DogFather and a scrap Muk, but that's not going to happen.

I still keep the faith though. Afterall, this is a community and I've seen firsthand that there are good people in here that will pass on an extra blade at their cost for the sake of brotherhood.

I actually bought a DogFather a few weeks ago for $250 and quickly had to sell it at a small loss because I was cash-low and had to pay off a medical bill. It totally sucks, but such is life. In the meantime I'll just wait patiently for another one to come along at a fair price.

Re: Price of second hand dogs! I feel like griping, - 08/05/11 04:33 PM

Agreed, I think I have paid extra for maybe three Bussekin knives in my collection. However, due to the uniqueness of the knife it was worth it to me as tight as I am. Though it is frustrating, never quit trying. And though I don't collect many multiples of identical blades, just remember that dealers and other multiple collectors have money the same color as yours, only perhaps a little more of it. They pay for them up front, just like anyone else. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

We could apply Obama's Distribution of Wealth policy here and force those who can afford many of the more expensive blades (we'll call them the Have's) to give some of their collection to those who can't afford them (the have-nots). Because everyone deserves to have a nice blade, right? What say you? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

There are occasional good deals out there - right now someone on bladeforums has a regulator 7.5" blade, black on blask for $130 tahts almost the price from the shop.
I bought a Scrapper 5 for $110 shipped form a forum.

Patience is the key.

I for one have my fingers crossed, hoping that the Scrapper 6 will be offered again someday! Even though I am sure the slightly bigger 711 will be up that alley, the S6 is still on my wishlist.

Distribution of Wealth? Tell me more! I definately consider myself more of a "Have Not" than a "Have". I'm a lot closer to poor than I am to rich, just like most of the rest of us here are.

If that's really the case, sounds to me like he might need to change his name to "Robin Hood"! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> All I've been able to call him lately though is "Jellyfish". <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

Re: Price of second hand dogs! I feel like griping, - 08/06/11 07:26 AM

you know there are some people who will sell a reasonably priced dogfather i put one up for 180 on ebay i only asked for what i had into the knife itself 140 for the knife and then 40 for the custom work i had done which was a real sharpening and blueing job on the blade after it had been stripped. boom watch the sucker go on ebay went up to 317 if the guy pays his bill by next week ill be sending it off to Cali. The thing that amazed me the most is that i offered it at 180 to someone to buy free and clear and they passed after i wouldnt budge on my price which i thought was more than fair. i guess the moral of the story is when you see them for less than 200 you should get em while the gettin is good. eventually these will become so rare they will be just impossible to find but i find comfort in the fact that i can buy one of these knives and use it to my hearts content and either keep it if i love it or sell if i dont like it for the amount of money i have into them and then some for the purchase of a new knife that i have found to be better. The only other thing i can say is you gotta hit the blade shows and gun shows they are still floating around. the knife store i work at purchased 5 dogfathers at knob for like 150-200 a piece from individuals last fall.

People will pay what they are willing. I did sale quite a few blades of late, mostly Bussekin as I was not using them, there was others that were close in design and I like them more, etc. Do I regret it, kinda as I will miss have them but then again I feel pretty good because many went to fellow Dogs.

I will be thinning my Busse-made herd next week. I will not list them here, but keep an eye on the BF Exchange.

You wifes getting the chest of drawers isn't she? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

PS I want a big sharp choppa!

Yes, she gets ONE of them. Choppers? Oh, yeah, there will be choppers. I will start posting them around Thursday, one at a time as I make these difficult choices. I like them ALL! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

I hope all the good ones are Thursday <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> cause I will be off the net all day Friday and totally off Sat-Mon. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> But camping in the mountains will be pretty awesome too. I'm gonna work out the RMD next weekend!.

Yes resale costs are too high, so why did I just push 'em higher? Just spent $165 (+sh) for a Deregulator. AAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH. Couldn't resist. Ok. Addicted. And I haven't handled a Bussekin blade yet. I better start selling the rest. Wait for the 511, I can do this, wait for the 511... Sigh

Oh the pain of choosing. My choices have been made and photographed. Most are users and have seen their share of reviews and chop offs, so I'll be selling them at near cost. I have a few mint ones. Susan gets back late tonight or early tomorrow and I need to make room for her stuff and get cash to make my monthly wife payments. She's worth it.

It is in my pocket right now. That's the one I use every day. I mean, how often in daily life do I need a Killa Zilla? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I have a scrapper 6 that horn dog sold me and it is my favorite fixed blade of all time and everytime I see it I think of his kindness in the transaction. I'm sorry to hear you are selling some of your collection off but anyone lucky enough to get any will be very pleased and as mentioned earlier they will have a bit of an edge. It will be very cool to have one and see it in a post from one of his famous knife tests. I be looking forward to see if there is a yard keeper involved in the sell. Good luck to everyone. By the way I forgot to mention anytime I've ever had to sell one of mine it has been at my cost plus shipping.

I sold so many S6s, I forgot which one you got. They would appear at knife shows, and I would buy them and sell them at cost. The S6 has to be one of the best Scrappers ever made. Thanks for the kind words. These new scrappers look great too. I parted with my small handled Scrappers some time ago, so no YKs or DMs. I'll start posting some more tomorrow on the exchange. Already put a few up. Precious metals (INFI, SR101, SR77, 154CM) have proven to be a pretty good inflation hedge for me, and a lot more fun than playing with gold coins. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Re: Price of second hand dogs! I feel like griping, - 08/11/11 06:11 AM

Hey Vic the one I got from you was stripped, crazy sharp and it had an orange lanyard and like you I truely believe they are the best all around blade anywhere. To be honest the precious metals aren't high on my list, like you I just like a good tough blade. I saw your sale started and it looks like it's off to a great start, good luck.

Whew. Just got back from the post office shipping blades all over the USA. My gal there packs them and figures the best rates for me. I feel like Amy 0 after a ganza. My head is spinning. Oh well, I'll be shipping more tomorrow. I guess my used prices were attractive. As soon as I would post some of them, they were gone. But then some others that I thought would go fast are still there. But not many. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Knives aren't actually going up, the dollar is going down. Considering what gas and groceries are going for now, some things are a bargain even if you pay $50 more than retail.

Would be nice to see some of the more popular models come around again.....

Perhaps we could have a knife lottery. 20 tickets available for $10 each. For a ten spot, you get a good shot at winning a nice knife.

You said a mouthful brother! The sheeple listen to the news and think that Gold just keeps going up not realizing that what that really means is the dollar is losing buying power! Because of the fed printing money!

You can bet that STEEL is going up relative to the dollar just like gold and silver. Money based on nothing is bound to fail one day.

Speaking of Steel. I am sure glad I started this thread we wouldn't ahve known about the sell off. Horn Dog I really glad your new wife wanted a dresser. Congrats on the marriage HD, I got married three months ago. Speaking of wives how am I going to tell my wife about certain recent aquisitions?

Maybe DT's 12 step program can help! Crap!

Re: Price of second hand dogs! I feel like griping - 08/12/11 04:16 PM

I am glad the dogs and others got to score some good used Scrappers, Rats, and Busses at fair prices. Unfortunately, I missed reading rule 15 in section 3 of the posting rules over at the exhange. I was supposed to post them all in one monster thread rather than one at a time. Rattled a few cages over there by dominating the whole first page, so they had a legitimate complaint. Oh well, the Horn Dog ganza was fun while it lasted, and I got the two grand I needed.
