1911 . 22lr conversions

1911 . 22lr conversions - 10/25/11 08:38 PM

I have this idea that a my 1911 with a 22lr conversion addition will be my BOB pistol. From the information I've picked up, it seems the Marvel Unit 1 is the way to go. "Very accurate" is what I keep hearing.
Small game hunting requires well placed head shots so accuracy is paramount.

Do any of you Dogs have any first hand experience with these or any other conversions?
If so, I need recommendations for a hunter not a plinker.

Thanks, Fred

Great idea and depending on funds and local laws you could add a can and do your small game hunting in more places with less attention.

Edit: Looks like everybody likes the Kimber but there are others too.

No experiences with actual conversions but from what I have read and heard the Marvel is the one to go with. Evidently they have a better track record than the Kimber or the old Colt conversions. They cost more, but their customer service seems to be top notch from the one time I talked to them.

I like the idea of conversion kits so I can fire a hundred or so rounds of cheap ammo through the platform I plan on training with before firing much more expensive rounds for the real training.

But, I assume you are carrying a 45 ACP in a BOB is because you want some stopping power for protection. Where is that protection when you have a 22 conversion kit on your weapon?

I think a better idea for a BOB is a Ruger Mark III. You can pick one up for about the same price as a good conversion kit and be able to hunt small game and still be able to deploy you 1911 if you get in trouble. Plus, time has proven the Ruger line of 22 pistols to be second to none in reliability and accuracy which is something a conversion kit will not have.

You will be adding weight but I am guessing you would keep the kit in a box or something when not in use, so it would take up just as much or more space than the Ruger.

I'm sorry for not addressing your question, but I don't have much experience with 1911 conversion kits and I just wanted to give me input.

What you say makes since and was considered long and hard for my application.
I'm looking to keep the weight down to a minimum. I do own a Ruger MKII Gov't
that is the most accurate 22 pistol I've owned. The problem is it's a tank.
Finding something that is very light and accurate is hard to find (haven't found
it yet).
Having a tac. shotgun would be with me at all times anyway, so being under gunned
wouldn't be an issue. I've also thought about said shotgun having bird shot as
the first round down the pipe as a small game getter. Shotgun shells are heavy
and bulky to carry around.
S&W 317 3.5" maybe???

Kel-tec PMR30? It's less than a pound and packs a bigger punch.

Check this out.
Anybody living in California feels my pain.
If it's not on the "list" you can't buy new.
Exceptions are: If someone happens to move here from
another state and wants to sell a hand gun that is not
on the list, they can do a face to face transfer only.
An FFL holder cannot even sell inside this state, they must
be exported.

Just thinking about it makes me sweat blood!

This is insane, but I am not shocked. California has always been one of the biggest violators of the constitution.

That's why they call it Kalifornia!

That PMR30 would sell like crazy (even with the 10 shot magazine)
in California. All my buddies are drooling over that thing.
It pays to have relatives in other states <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Can one not take a weekend trip to Nevada and stock up on goodies?

I am still waiting to find a PMR30 for a good price, not something that is 200 over MSRP.
