New MREs - 11/01/11 06:46 PM

Apparently the army came up with new MREs:

They include "caffeinated beef jerky" and "zapple sauce"

I just got a few tons of the newest menus delivered last week. I haven't run into any zapple sauce yet though.

They actually update the menus every year. Around this time every year the troops get a chance to vote on which menus to keep and which should be done away with. In the survey we take, there is also a section to make suggestions.

A few years back a lot of troops asked for breakfast menus. Then came the omelette, which was quickly voted off the island. I have yet to meet a person who liked it.

Cool "insider information" JJ

It seems this is more of a general overhaul to make every item in the MRE more palatable? I think a lot of guys throw out certain items, though an ex-marine I know says you can make any MRE taste really good if you just have a little time to mess with it.

A friend asked me what MRE's taste like. I told him "Tabasco Sauce. All of them." That was when I first joined, they are a lot better now and don't require the heavy dousing of sauce.

The barter system is still going strong, if you don't like it, chances are some one in your platoon does and will trade something for it. I am lucky since I don't like candy. So, I can get just about anything with a bag of Skittles or M&M's. I'm keeping my Reece's Pieces though.

There used to be a section in Marines Magazine called MRE Cookbook. It is a monthly magazine an each issue had different concoctions to make them better. Usually they used ingredients from one MRE, but sometimes you had to do some bartering to get all the right fixin's.

My favorite is the MRE chili. It only took one MRE, the beef steak menu. Chop the beef steak up into small pieces and mix it into the bag of beans that came with it as a side. Pour in the pack of cayenne pepper and empty that tiny little bottle of Tabasco sauce, and you are set. The menu even have wheat crackers included as a snack. The only thing you needed to barter for was some jalapeno cheese, but it was fine with out it and all you have left to barter is your candy anyway.

I've only been out of the Justice League for 9 years, but the MRE's have definately come a long way. The best I ever had was the chili macaroni. The ham slice was by far the worst.

I can't agree with Skunk since it would be disrespect to my Commander and Chief, So I vote for 1.

Re: New MREs - 11/21/11 11:55 PM

MREs still cause me to shudder.

I remember my father bringing home cases of CRats when we lived in Germany....and I remembering LIKING those.

MRE's....that's another story.

In the early 1990's I always kept 3 or 4 cases of MRE's at my college apartment for "emergency provisions". I never actually ATE them though.

When Y2K started to be discussed I decided to put in a good supply of MRE's. After Y2K came and went I eventually decided to rotate the MRE's into my regular diet.

Re: New MREs - 11/21/11 11:58 PM

All I can say is....

Freeze-Dried food is infinitely lighter and tastes really good. I know you have to have water to rehydrate it, but you're carrying the water weight INSIDE MRE products anyway...so just carry more water for FD rehydration.

They came up with the chemical MRE heaters so I'm sure the egg heads could invent something to boil water for FD prep as well.

Obama will still be our CiC. Fact. But being here in Afghanistan, i can tell you, MREs, in any capacity, are horrid. Also - ANOTHER fact. Why any civilian would EVER try to wanna-be cool and buy these for $8 a pop is beyond me!!!!!
