New year's Eve, the high desert and a feral dog. - 01/02/12 06:07 AM

I have been in a couple deserts camping the last few days. Here are the images.

Yours truly in Dixie National Forest New Year's Eve. Got my fireworks already going.

Got there early enough to do some bicycling and saw some pretty sweet stuff.

Decided to play with some slow shutter speeds at Leeds Creek.

Took some water from Leeds.

Somewhere in the Mojave.

The 6.5 Reg. isn't the best chopper, but it got the job done. It was 60F when I go to the campsite, but I knew the high desert gets cold quick, so I gathered a lot of wood for the night so I could enjoy the clear skies in comfort. It ended up hitting 12F that night.

P.S. Dan. I have copy written the name "Feral Dog." You are welcome to use it for a future knife design's name, but I require a royalty of one of said knives.

Looks like you had a peaceful relaxing quiet place to camp JJ. How many nights did you spend camping out before you got to 29 palms?

I have two places in mind for the trip home. Opposite direction, so I can pick just one. Grand Canyon or the Sequoia Forest. Both are a little out of the way in either direction, but both are worth it.

Maybe try and find out which one has the LEAST amount of visitors this time of the year and go here for some peace and quite after the "Big city".

I am thinking both will have empty areas this time of year. I have been to the Canyons before, but the Redwoods I haven't seen yet.

That Platypus/Katadyn Filter combo works great. Set it up and forget. Next to effortless.

That is a Katadyn filter? I thought it was the Frontier Pro.

Great pics mate. I spent some time in Joshua Tree NP there near 29 Palms about 10 years ago. Really liked it out there...!!! I have also been to the Sequoias, you will need something bigger than the Reg to trim one of them...

Awesome pics! I have been to both the Grand Canyon and Sequoia Natl Park. Nice places, especially in the winter. I would have too say that if you have not yet been to Sequoia, it is deffinately worth the trip.

Feral Dog, I like it, I think it would be a great name for that big regulator I keep asking for. I hope Dan uses it on something.

Very nice pics JJ. I really like the water and slower shutter speeds

Let me second that. If you had never seen either the Grand Canyon or the Redwoods, it would be a tough call. Well, maybe not; there are few things on earth as awe-inspiring as the Grand Canyon. But, the Redwoods are awe-inspiring in a different way, and I absolutely love them, love walking the trails through them. Have not been to Sequoia, but have seen them a few times in Northern California. You won't be disappointed. On another note, and to your original post, you make me miss the desert! Lived briefly in Prescott,
AZ, a number of years ago, and came to appreciate the desert in a way no green-loving, ocean-loving person would expect to; it's got its own special magic, too.
