Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 11/25/12 07:07 AM

I just accidentally bought one of these rifles(long story) and I'm wondering about what scope to get for it. Any suggestions? I have no real purpose other than it's a cool bolt action in .308 with a ten round mag. Zombies maybe?

I'm looking at this one Scout Scope

Thoughts?

I like the idea, would love to see a review of what you think. Id put an aimpoint or eotech on it.

You can get a rail to mount a normal scope! How much does one run and how much does it weigh? I'm looking for a varmet rifle. I love 1-4 power scopes

Poor eye relief. I like the one by four. Almost a red dot but still a scope

Yeah I have used and a buddy has two. Awesome but not sure I want one on a three O eight

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 11/25/12 12:23 PM

I currently have a Leu[old Pig Plex 1-4x that is regular and a red dot that turns itself on when grabbed and turns itself off at 5 min if it sits still---I love this scope. I also have a Redfield Varmint 4-12x on a hb Howa 1500 bolt action that is nice. The old Savage wears a Simmons AETEC 2.5-10x but they are no longer made IIRC. I would suggest looking at a 2-7x optic by Leupold, Redfield, or Nikon. The 2-7x offers the best for a scout. Have fun with the new rifle.

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 11/25/12 04:27 PM

Wouldnt you have to have a pistol scope? Or do they make rifle scopes just for scout rifles?
Posted By: lazi

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 11/25/12 05:22 PM

called "long eye relief" or ler scopes. something like pistol scopes but from what I have read eye relief can vary a few inches when holding a pistol versus a scout rifle setup.

I have been looking at a lesser expensive scout option for my m1a scout. there's a guy on YouTube running a leatherwood ler scope on a m1a and from what I have read on the web it seems to be a good option if you aren't looking to spend a lot.

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 11/25/12 11:43 PM

Get an Aimpoint.

Anyone tested these for accuracy? I'm skeptical of sub-moa performance out of the box....and this is why I'd lean towards Aimpoint / RDS over magnification.

A small review from Chucky...http://www.chuckhawks.com/ruger_gunsite_scout_rifle.htm Average group @ 50 YDS!!! = 1.83"

I love the concept (which is why I own an 18" 308 w/ DBM). I don't like Ruger....or the poor implementation of the system. I think you'd be better off getting a savage like their scout model, or their "precision carbine" model (or Rem 700, or anything other than ruger), cutting the barrel back to 18", and installing a new bottom metal from CDI Precision that accepts AI/AW mags. Install peep sights to your hearts content. Get a better stock down the road. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

I'd take an AK over these scouts, especially with that type of accuracy. And, I'd take an AR over the AK :P

Apologies for the ruger bashing. I just think this could've been done so much better for the consumer.

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 11/26/12 12:00 AM

I've seen other reviews where they are getting MOA accuracy. Since I already have the rifle it's no use in telling me to buy something else. ;-)

Those groups were with iron sights as well. They admitted the accuracy would be better with a scope.

Completely understand...again, I didn't mean to bash the rifle. After reading it...my post was a bit out of line, so my apologies. I think they serve a highly effective purpose.

I still highly recommend an Aimpoint T-1. Lightweight, rugged, and you could mount it very low on your picatinny rail. If you want accuracy, however, the Aimpoint (and any RDS) is probably out of consideration.

If you plan on keeping her...I would bed the action.

Let us know how she shoots, once you get her all outfitted and into the field!

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 11/26/12 06:10 AM

My brother bought one for his oldest son last Christmas.
My parents bought him a regular eye relief Leupold 3x9 vari-x II scope for it, with bases to use on the rifle.
My nephew not only uses for target practice, but also for hunting deer and moose.
The rifle is accurate and so far very reliable, the only thing he wants to do to it is change the 10 round mag with a 5 round one while hunting.
He loves the rifle, and when hunting he may be carrying it or it may be riding on his quad.
I know that putting on a regular relief scope defeats the scout rifle concept, but my nephew wanted a hunting rifle/quad gun and this one works perfectly.

Thanks for the well wishes. Dawn's surgery was successful and she should be home tomorrow. Then we wait to see if they got all the cancer and in two weeks she has knee surgery. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> Teresa has fibromuscular dysplaysia of the carotid artery. Pretty rare condition, but better than the aneurism they thought it was. I'm actually wondering if that might be my issue with my kidneys. It seems to be undiagnosed in many cases and the symptoms match a lot of mine.

On the negative side mom's other cat has cancer and will have to be put down also. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

What kind of advantage do the offer over a traditional scope or red dot type optic?
Posted By: Endeavour Morse

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 12/18/12 06:34 PM

Advantages over:

Traditional = speed.

Red Dot = magnification while maintaining the "both eyes open" method. Also, no batteries.

Scout scopes aren't for everyone. They're a "love them or hate them" proposition for most shooters. I love them (and have traditional scopes, an EoTech and a Trijicon TR21 Accupoint 1-4x optics on other guns).

The only two complaints I have about the GSR:

1) The factory STEEL magazines "wobble" in the magazine well.
2) The barrel isn't chrome lined, and I think many people will use their GSR's as "hard use / survival guns" that would benefit from chrome lining.

A stainless steel version would solve #2, and I've been told the newer plastic mags solve #1. I would not, however, want the plastic mags since they're completed exposed below the rifle and thus subject to impact (for example: going prone hard and fast).

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 01/22/13 06:12 AM

Yesterday my brother and I hit the local gun store/range before we headed to an outdoor range. It was like a barren wasteland for HD shotguns, AR's, AK/AKM's, M1A's, or anything that took a detachable mag. There was a Ruger Scout but I did not look at the price. Handgun wise, .40 S&W was still stocked in the case but everything else was near sold out.

I figured there would not be many people at the outdoor range and was I wrong, there was the most I had seen in a long time. I am not sure if it was because we had nice weather, the election, the EO's or what but there was plenty of people shooting AR's, bolt rifles, M1A's, M1 Garands, SKS rifles, and all kinds of pistols. It did my heart good to see several kids and women out there too.

Ted, in time the ammo will come back. Not as cheap as we want or fast enough but hopefully the ammo producers will have an ample supply of 5.56mm and 7.62x51mm real soon--I mean the POTUS said we are leaving so why not.

Ha, my rifle was featured in the big battle scene in the tv show Revolution this week. The character, Nora, was using it to fend off the helicopter attack. I thought it was cool that they used a bolt action rifle for that.

BTW, it wasn't MY actual rifle, but it was set up as a scout rifle should be with the forward mounted scope and ten round magazine.

I don't think that will have an impact. The civilian market doesn't compete much. With the military since the rounds are different. 22 ammo is hard to find and I can't remember the last time I fired a 22 on duty.

I believe the ammo shortage is due to panic buying. If we all stopped buying every round we see ...

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 07/22/13 08:25 PM

I ended up selling my GSR.

I like the scout scope concept, but prefer semi-auto rifles. The Colt LE901, SCAR-17 and XCR-M are all 7.62x51mm semi-autos with the ability to "forward mount" a scout scope (on their monolithic upper receivers). This, in my option, negates all of the merits of the GSR.

The GSR's non-chrome lined barrel was a huge factor for me. These rifles are designed for "do everything" use, and as such need the corrosion resistance and ease of cleaning that chrome affords. It'd probably cost Ruger $20 a rifle to add it...or at least make the stainless version available.

Anyway, my GSR is long gone but I have a Colt LE901 and XCR-M to replace it.

The Colt is more accurate, and the XCR-M could be just as reliable.

exactly you have to start somewhere, that leupold scope aught to last you for life.

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 07/24/13 01:29 PM

My first gun was an AR15 my uncle and I assembled from on a SGW stop-sign lower with a gun-show A1 poly-bag parts kit. That was 1984, and I was 10 years old. Since then my collection and grown and then contracted many many times. I've owned outright JUNK and guns too pretty to touch without gloves on. Now I'm content having a pretty small battery of trusted guns with a couple of "range toys" thrown in. The range toys never stick around long, but I do enjoy trading them out for something different to experience.

People often ask me what they "need" in their "gun battery". I don't offer blanket statements often, but unless I know the person well I say this: A person who is concerned enough to ask about a "gun battery" not just a self defense or hunting gun should have the following:

1) Marlin 795 Stainless or Ruger 10/22 Stainless with Tech Sights

1) CZ452 or Marlin 880/881/980/981 22LR Bolt Action with a Leupold 3-9x40mm scope

1) Ruger Mk3 6" Stainless Model

1) Ultra Small CCW Handgun in 38Spl or 380Acp (I usually recommend a S&W 642 Airweight or Ruger LCP)

1) Glock 19 with Night Sights

1) 5.56x45mm Carbine (I usually recommend one of the following: Arsenal SLR-106FR, Colt 6520 or BCM MidLength Lightweight).

1) 7.62x51mm Rifle (I recommend an 18" or 21" barreled FAL from ARS, DSA, FN, or Springfield Armory with DSA being the least favorable due to not offering chrome lined bores). I recommend adding a DSA Extreme Duty scope mount even if they don't want to (currently) scope the rifle. It allows for the mounting of Leupold's excellent VX3 1.75-6 scope for medium range shooting and hunting.

1) Remington 870 Police (these have no MIM parts, metal trigger groups and are finished to higher standards than the Express line but still feature "durable" parkerized finishes) with two barrels: 18" IC Fixed Choke with Rifle Sights and a Special Purpose Model 26" Vent-Rib with (removable) Rem-Chokes and Bead Sight. A Wingmaster with an add-on 20" IC Rifle Sighted barrel is also an option, but the high polished blue finish and wood stock are more maintenance than parkerization and synthetic.

There really isn't anything a normal person in North America couldn't do with this battery of guns.

There are a few "special add-ons" depending on the person's location or interests. Some specialized hunting requires more specialized tools, and some locations require different defensive guns. For example, if I lived in Alaska I'd have a S&W 629-3 with a 6" barrel and a Winchester 70 Extreme Weather in 300 Win Mag with a Leupold VX3 scope on the list.

Most of this lists I read include a "long range bolt action". The fact is, most people cannot out-shoot their Ruger 10/22 let alone a 30 caliber centerfire with wind correction, etc. Its just another case of people vomiting up what they've read and think they need while sitting comfortably in Fort Living Room. The fact is, most people cannot out-shoot a FAL, G3 or M14...so why not go semi-auto.

ETA: let the bickering begin.
Posted By: Endeavour Morse

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 07/24/13 01:46 PM

Everyone has "pet" guns and designs. The fact is, the above listed guns are not my "pet" choices, but the overwhelming choice of the shooting community.

An example of the bickering that happens when this lists come out is the FAL. Somebody reading this is thinking the M1A is a better rifle. Facts are clear: the M14 was adopted by the US and then given to one other country. 90 nations adopted the FAL. Even if this is an endorsement of the more advanced design (remember the M14 is a 1936 M1 Garand with a modified gas system, shortened 1906 vintage 30-06 and detachable magazine) it speaks volumes about the parts availability in the future. Also, SA, Inc uses investment cast receivers, and is now out of USGI forged parts. SA, Inc actually IMPORTS CAST PARTS FROM KOREA now. Research this for yourself.

Pet choices are just that - personal pets. If you have something you like - then great! However, don't think that because you've shot 750 rounds through your XYZ that it's "proven" and will remain serviceable when you need it. The above list of guns (with the exception of the Ultra Small CCW handguns) are re-searchable choices. They have been vetted, tested, abused and otherwise wrung-out and found to provide service in the harshest conditions. They have omni-present parts availability and shoot the most common rounds in America:

22LR
9mm Luger/Parabellum (9x19mm NATO used by our troops)
223 Remington (5.56x45mm NATO used by our troops)
308 Remington (7.62x51mm NATO used by our troops)
12 Gauge

ETA: Again I want to reiterate that the S&W 642 and Ruger LCP aren't bombproof and the 38Spl and 380Acp aren't overly common anymore. However, a person needs a small hyper concealable handgun in a caliber potent enough to get the job done if shot placement is taken care of by the user.
Posted By: Endeavour Morse

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 07/24/13 01:56 PM

Recommending an ultra-concealable gun is problematic, because they tend to be cheaply made and aren't as durable as larger designs.

However, the trade off is they don't get shot a lot so the wear isn't as much of an issue.

I tend to prefer ulta lightweight and small guns for this "role" because if I'm going to carry something any larger I'll just dress differently and carry a Glock 19 sized handgun.

Therefore, I've narrowed my recommendations down to a "pre-lock" S&W 642 Airweight or Ruger LCP. My wife and I have owned several of each, and have never experienced any sort of malfunction (even after prolonged pocket carry).

The 642 sucks to shoot. Its painful with +P ammo so we sold them in favor of the easier to conceal and shoot LCP. The trade off is more routine maintenance. The Smith required none, but the Ruger's semi-auto action has to be "de linted" often.

Whatever a person chooses for this use, it needs to be at minimum a 380Acp or 38 Special. A tiny 9mm would be better, but they tend to be too large framed for this role. I just sold my Kahr CM9 for this reason. To conceal it required clothes that allowed me to carry a Glock 26 so...why not a Glock with night sights and 11 rounds instead of a Kahr with regular sights and seven rounds?

The gun chosen has to work. These aren't romantic guns. They are in-your-face no-other-choice but to shoot guns.

ETA: once again .... let the bickering begin.

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 07/24/13 02:02 PM

Thanks Arch. THIS is the kind of posts that we can all use and ponder on, use as a basis for our own weapons choice.

I have

Browning buckmark W/8 inch barrel
10-22 standard
both 380 and 32 semi "Hideout" pistols
couple 9mm
40 S&W
S&W 357 revolver, 3inch SS
410 bolt action
20 gauge 870
Colt AR15
Oh and 308 (two actually)
And a couple others. I used to have a 12 guage, but Dad sold it when they had their auction (I forgot to get it).

With this I should be able do about anything I want/need to do. BUT I still want to get a pistol grip 12ga. Pistol grip because I like them.

Randy,

That's a great list.

As a side:
I logged back in hoping to make the following statement before anyone else posted, because I didnt' want to make it sound like I was directing the comment toward anyone in particular.

I've done the hard part here. I've spent three decades and an UNTOLD FORTUNATE making that list. Don't ask me about "xyz" or "what about this or that". Don't be lazy. Do your own research. Use my list vs your idea and spend some time reading.

Randy, obviously this was NOT directed at you in any way. Your list is actually outstanding. Its larger than the "minimum" but that's completely acceptable.

My collection is larger than my minimal list, and I'm actually trying to down size it. I'm past the "collector" point in life and am now just a "user / accumulator", LOL.

As a shooting hobbyist I like having extra guns, but wrote the post for Gun Dog because of his comment about being able to afford things now. I figured it would be useful for people to profit from my years of testing and wasting money.

Well, actually time and money. I could not begin to tell you how many nights I've stayed up until 4 or 5am working on resolving the ultimate question:

What is the best gear.

ETA: there is no correct answer to the above question. It is very situational.

IF I was limited to just a couple three weapons I think It might be...
22 rifle
(Maybe) 22 handgun
AR15
12ga. Shotgun
.308
9mm handgun

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 07/24/13 04:35 PM

I am bummed about the cm9 i really can't get behind the 380 it just doesn't hit hard enough (I know, no one would volunteer to get shot with it) I was really leaning towards one of the 9mm ultra compacts but you are right they are another size larger than the 380s and if you can't conceal it your not going to carry it. So I guess in the scheme of things carrying a 380 is better than not carrying your 9mm.
Posted By: Endeavour Morse

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 07/24/13 04:56 PM

Randy,
You are right about this place. I forgot since I hadn't been around much lately.

greaser,
I had a pair of CM9's (I bought them as "his and hers"). My wife never once touched her copy and I sold it about two weeks ago. I sold mine earlier after only about 250 rounds. It functioned fine, but was just too big for "ultra ccw". I'm allowed to carry open, but choose not to do so. As such, depending on what I'm wearing I either super conceal a dinky gun or carry a standard sized sidearm with or without a BUG.

The CM9 was too thick to be truly highly concealable. It was short enough (slide and frame), but blocky and thick.

I really was a choice between the LCP or nothing for some circumstances.

Like you, I'm not a fan of 380Acp. Heck, I don't even really like 9mm. I prefer to carry a 40SW or 45Acp. However, in our "civilized world" carrying a 380 is better than pepper spray.

I'd pass on the CM9 if I were you. It is, by far, my favorite Kahr design. (I've had several). I really like the gun, and would recommend it to someone who doesn't want to carry something the size of a Glock 26. However, it can't be viewed as an "ultra concealment" sidearm.

I almost kept the new CM9 for the above reason (not wanting to carry something "larger" in some circumstances), but in the end I just decided to stick with "ultra small" and "standard". I've had a carry license since 1992 so over the past 21 years I've adapted my dress accordingly.

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 07/24/13 04:59 PM

The LCP with a KelTec clip is so light and small you literally forget you have it on you. It is a gun that you won't be able to find an excuse to leave at home (or in the car).

My daily carry guns are either a HK USP 40 Compact or HK45 Compact Tactical. I wish I could just carry the HK45CT everywhere all the time, but we can't scare the brainwashed masses...so...alas I have the LCP.
Posted By: greaser

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 07/24/13 05:20 PM

I do the same my normal carry is my XD45 but in the summer it is hard to conceal so I end up only carrying a knife and I just don't feel comfortable doing that. I'll look into a LCP for sure my mom has the LC9 and she enjoys it I have shot it a few times and liked the small size.
Posted By: Endeavour Morse

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 07/24/13 06:15 PM

The two LCP's we have are 100% reliable, but we did a 200rd break in on each before I trusted them enough to carry.

200rds isn't a lot of "break in", but you'll understand why we stopped at that round count after you shoot the little guy. The narrow frame width can make your hand sore.

They don't match the quality of other guns I own, but since my favored brands don't make micro-autos I'm stuck choosing between what's available.

As a side, if you find 380 ammo - BUY IT ALL. Its been nearly impossible to find since before the latest ban scare. Its also insanely expensive.

As long as you approach this from a "its a throw away quality gun" standpoint you'll be just fine. Honestly, as I think back on this, they really aren't "low quality" guns. They just "feel cheaper" than some of my larger (and significantly more expensive) guns. However, they've never rusted or malfunctioned so what's not to like?

If you're familiar with the LC9 you'll be amazed at how much smaller the LCP is.

Last note on the LCP:

DO NOT RIDE THE SLIDE. You really need to let it run fully from the rear most position to chamber a round when the gun is new. If you 'ride' the slide at all it might not go fully into battery. This won't be an issue after you break the gun in.

Posted By: Endeavour Morse

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 07/24/13 06:18 PM

One last comment:

Don't carry the LCP in your back pocket. I had a KelTec P3AT that I sold to my uncle. He carried in his back pocket for about a year. He went to the range and it wouldn't function (he'd fired it before carrying it and it was fine). His weight had deformed the frame enough to create problems. KelTec fixed the gun for free, but he never trusted it again.

He's 5'-11" and weighs about 180 pounds.

I got a metal mag in the mail today from. http://www.alphaindmfg.com/store/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=51

The review made it sound great.

But I'm calling the company tomorrow.
First you can't insert the mag with the bolt closed
Second to feed a round you have to SLAM THE BOLT CLOSED!!!!
Third when you pull the bolt back to extract the round the round comes back but the bottom of the case hits the top of the next one in the mag and it just sits there not finishing the extraction. The mag feels like quality and the finish is good but the function sucks for a $62 mag!!!
Posted By: greaser

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 07/26/13 03:42 PM

Ouch yes a bad mag can ruin a decent weapon and if I am paying 60 plus dollars for a mag it better be flawless.

PS it sounds like it is locking into place to high in the mag well causing the function issues and the inability to lock in with the bolt closed.

I have several Alpha mags and they work flawlessly. Just to be sure you did get the one specifically for the Gunsite rifle. They have a couple versions and that is the only one that works with the Gunsite. I've found him to be very easy to work with when calling him to check on orders, etc.

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 07/27/13 09:22 PM

The review on their website said get the type 2 which I did.
Which mags are you running?
Posted By: tedwca

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 07/29/13 12:44 AM

Hmm, type 2 doesn't ring a bell. This is the model I got is the Alpha 308 Magazine / Ruger GSR - Item# ALPH-GSR308

It was specifically called the GSR model and both mags work like a charm(I haven't used the third one yet). Better than the factory steel mag btw. They also hold 11 rounds.
Posted By: tedwca

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 07/29/13 12:48 AM

Weird, that is no longer an option at their store. I wonder if they just renamed it or something. It's also possible that you got a type 1 by mistake.

I just double checked mine and I can easily insert the mag when the bolt is closed and no need to slam the bolt to load the next round. I bet they sent you the wrong magazine. They were very responsive to my calls and he even called to check and see if they arrived OK.

I also noticed that on the metal factory mags that if the round sits all the way back against the rear the bolt won't strip the round out of the mag.

I'd add a 9mm, but the 40SW is the most popular police cartridge in the United States so you're still doing very well.

I've commented somewhere on here about the GSR magazine fit issues.

The "play" in the magazine well is too great to ensure reliable feeding. I believe this is a result of poor tolerances and the AI type magazine.

I wouldn't trust your rifle until you completely 100% resolve this issue. I'd rather have a reliable fixed 4rd bolt gun than an unreliable 10rd bolt gun.

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 07/29/13 11:03 PM

Talked with the owner of alpha today. He said sees this with the ruger rifles. He said out of 200 mags sent out 12 may not work well. He said that the ruger rifles tolerances are not as strictly maintained as other bolt guns.
He said he will send out a tweaked mag for me to try and if it works then any other mags I order he will make to those specs.
He was awesome to talk to and knew his info.
I wonder if I can install a different magwell in the rifle. The poly mags have no issues but they are not a quality product.

I'm starting to wonder about ruger products quality.
I expected more I guess.

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 07/30/13 01:55 AM

I like the idea behind the GSR but someday I believe that a semi auto .308 would be a better scout rifle.
Posted By: gun dog

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 08/08/13 12:35 PM

The ruger is heading back to the factory today. It will not consistently feed. There is a small metal lip in the top rear of the mag well that is catching the rim of the case and not allowing it to feed up enough for the bolt to catch and strip the rounds out. With plastic mags The back wall is thick enough that the rounds pass infront of this lip. But I find the plastic mags are to flimsy to be counted on in a High risk scenario.

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 08/08/13 04:45 PM

sorry it had to go back. had to send my rifle back and I was so bummed about it took me two years.

if you have tracking call to confirm that they got the rifle when it shows it's delivered. tell them you want hands and eyeballs on your rifle. then you can also ask to speak to anybody so you can explain in detail the problems. hopefully somebody that may know more about other issues with the rifle. if you get somebody the this would the time to get them to look for and iron out any other kinks that may exist or that you may have noticed. you can always ask them to work on the trigger, polish up feed ramps, get you a better magazine etc... hopefully you will talk to a guy who knows of all the more common issues and will go ahead and iron out any potential wrinkles.

i should've gotten them to smooth out the safety and polish up the trigger on my rifle since they had it but all they did was it was sent in for. i was just happy to get my issue taken care of but now i have to ship the trigger group back to them and have a non functioning rifle for a couple weeks. they did send me a good mag though...

Yes but it really is ups that is causing you problems with your pick up

A few years ago I bought a rifle and it was sent via purolator or Loomis, I can't remember which.

Here in Canada firearms can only be shipped by certain couriers and this was one of them.

No the sender did all his documentation correctly

I get home from work one day, and my neighbors sees me walking up my driveway
He said to me hey I got the new rifle that you ordered

He said when the courier was walking back to his truck from my front door he saw Dave and asked him if he knew me

When Dave said yes he gave him the box and said here can you give this to him when he gets home

Dave did not know what was in the box until he took it inside
When he saw that it was marked firearm he got nervous as he had a court ordered firearms ban (recovering drug addict)

Miraculously when I phoned customer service, they claimed that the driver had my signature on his paperwork

Let's just say that they were not very happy with me by the time I was done with them

But they didn't refinish the rifle so now there is raw unprotected steel in the back top portion of the mag well.... Somebody wasn't thinking. The alpha industries mags still aren't running 100% I called to see about returning but the owner said to keep then and tweak then and find out what needs done to make them work. sorry to hear about your gsr. saw a used one at the gun show and talked to the guy about it. i couldn't put my finger on it but i thought maybe he had bubba'd on it some and was pawning it off on somebody. now i get the feeling he had one with issues and was getting rid of it. that sucks because they look like good riles when you hold them. probably just some lemons out there but issues with a new rifle sure do spoil the whole experience.

there's a rifle out there for you.

gd I have learned to treat dealing with customer service like a job. if you aren't happy with the rifle and have a record of your attempts to get things right then you should be able to request a new rifle. it seems like a pain to deal with but really it is in the realm of possibilities.

while i would probably contact the dealer who sold you the rifle and see if they can return the rifle for a new. no ex change in funds but being a dealer they would have a little more pull.

if you want me to we can make a couple calls to ruger to work on getting you some options.we may can get you a credit towards another product or even just a new rifle unremaufactured rigfle to resell. I think you should really consider this. it's not asking too much for a company to stand by their product. the customer is always right and of you aren't happy ruger should at the very least consider ways to make it right other than the ones they have exhausted.

Maybe they can take the money you spent and put it towards the purchase price of that SR762 you were looking at.

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 10/29/13 11:24 PM

that's what i was thinking. a refund would be better but you can fall back to a credit. at the very least you should request a replacement rifle. there is no harm in asking and sometimes it takes a little bit of wrangling. i would treat it like i'm earning $800 when I talk to them. anybody saying "we can't help you" is unacceptable since you have already given them multiple opportunities to resolve the issues and they did not. you have every right to talk to them about the issue and you arrnt wasting anybodies time since they clocked in and are answering the phones. if the person you are talking to can't help you then move up the management/pay scale. if they aren't in the office and it's business hours you call right back and get somebody on the phone. don't just leave a message. if they can't help call back another day or try another department or et somebody who will help you with other options. it may seem like a lot but the hours you put in earning the money you spent were most likely much longer and harder than talking on the phone for a couple hours. you may even recover some faith in ruger as a brand.

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 11/01/13 07:28 PM

Thanks guys. I tried the whole exchange or credit deal when the rifle went back for a 2nd time and ruger would have no part of it!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm going to keep and and use it while I save for an auto .308 plus I have two 70% complete AR billet lowers to complete and build off of.
If I have another problem I may just drive to the factory and walk through the door and say here is your stinking gun lol.
The ruger sr762 is nice but because if my GSR problems I doubt I will ever buy another ruger product. Plus I got the dealer to let me pull out the BCG and the quality of machining was really rough. I've only done machining for a couple months and I can chamfer a heck of a lot better than they did.
Also they used roll pins to connect the top rail of the quad rail for end.
That was a cheap shortcut at best.

Also the mags from alpha industries that almost worked but I had to send back to be modified. It's been a few months and I haven't gotten more than a text from Chris the owner and I have no mags back. Also no refund. Getting pretty ticked off.

The excuse from ruger was because I purchased a rifle with xxxxxx serial number they can't give me another with oooooo serial number.

I've been wanting a GSR....not so sure now.

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 12/04/13 01:29 PM

Unless your positive it would fill your needs 100% I'd buy a FAL now that I went down this road. Plus the GSR with a wood stock full mag and optics is in the same weight range. Also optics are a bit tricky. Scout scopes suck

Re: Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle - 12/05/13 12:31 AM

That's some bad luck you had with the GSR. Unusual for a bolt gun to have so many problems.

I'm sure Ruger could work with an FFL or file the proper paperwork with ATF to replace the rifle. That's a dumb excuse.

They sent a couple free mags but I'm still not convinced. I will just use it till I have a semi .308
