What bags do you use?

What bags do you use? - 12/26/12 06:05 AM

My girlfriend just gifted me this one from Tasmanian Tiger. Along with a 1st aid kit of the same brand. I really dig it a lot, and can't wait to try it out, and get it all stuffed with great gear

Along with my 511 and Rainwalker sheath, fittet with 9 feet of paracord.

I use a USMC ILBE for longer treks and winter. Not my pic.

[Linked Image from armygear.net]

And, a Maxpedition Condor II for summer and shorter winter treks.

I have a specops THE pack that I have had for about eight years and it is still like new, dispite hard use. But for a bug out bag I've been eyeing both the eberlystock V69 and the wildthingstactical tactical adonista in black.

I've not really "Tried out" the pack like you guys do/have. I've just thrown some stuff in it and carried it a couple three miles at at time max. But it does feel good, definitely the best pack I've ever had. My only other experience with packs was with 1960's era backpacks.

Nice bags there, guys.

Great gear is always nice to have.
Now I just have to make some choices of what to put in it, and find out which knife will accompany it.

My current pack is a Badlands whitetail hybrid

been using an old Blackhawk patrol pack (pretty close copy of the Eagle Becker patrol pack) and a Duluth Pack Wanderer for day trips/overnighters.
recently traded into a Duluth Pack Rambler - haven't had a chance to try it on a loadout. maybe this weekend.

Kifaru Pointman and a HSGI Armadillo.

I'm looking for a smaller pack currently. Thinking about a Becker Patrol.

Re: What bags do you use? - 12/31/12 05:07 AM

My go to pack for the past 20 years has been an Arktis Patrol Pack. It has traveled the world with me and never ever let me down. Age and abuse have caught up a little and I am moving to an Eagle Becker (MOLLE version) for my hunting pack, a Kelty Falcon for my 3+ day pack and a Plat-a-Tac MEOPS pack for packing everything and the kitchen sink up in...

Re: What bags do you use? - 12/31/12 05:35 AM

Andy, found any good sources for the Becker?
Posted By: Andy the Aussie

Re: What bags do you use? - 12/31/12 06:11 AM

Nope... e-whore generally have a couple but the prices range from bloody good to stoopid..!!!

Been trying to buy one of the frames for the Becker but Eagle don't make 'em anymore and I can find one online at this point...

OK Andy, tell me about that rifle. That is unique. I am intrigued.

Re: What bags do you use? - 12/31/12 07:37 AM

MB, I think he said he has had it for 30+years and many many years ago something happened to the original stock and he put the barreled action in the McMillan stock you see. I don't know what happened to the post he said that in.

Re: What bags do you use? - 12/31/12 11:00 AM

Andy is that an SSG-69?
Posted By: Andy the Aussie

Re: What bags do you use? - 12/31/12 11:36 AM

Yep.... an original 1970s SSG. As Skunk said the original stock had a "mishap" and I dropped it in the McMillian you see about 20 years ago. It will still put them in one hole if I do my part.

That one looks pretty cool! Kind of oldschool.
How does the straps feel on the shoulders? They look like they may cut when packing heavy.

im really liking the duluth pack. would like some attachment places and the price is a bit steep. but the dimensions and layout looks good. price is a bit steep bit if it lasts then it would be worth it.

Straps are wide and no cutting, if you need them they have some wider straps with padding and I have thought about buying. I use the pack on all my trips and love it.

This pack is built extremely well and will last a couple of life times.

On the deluth bag,you could get some surplus strap pads and add them. The pads I speak of are WW II and Korean War vintage. If you like the deluth there are some European surplus bags that would fit the bill for a lot less.

I have become a fan of GORUCK bags. Expensive, but they hold up when put trough the ringer. Made in the USA.

Badlands!!!!!!! Made in the USA with a Busse style warranty

Re: What bags do you use? - 01/12/13 09:11 AM

i also use a usmc ilbe main pack and the matching 3 day assault pack.

i have a maxpedition fatboy style pack (knockoff) by a company called red rock for my car/edc pack. usually just take that along for day hikes. 3 day pack for overnights and the ilbe for anything longer.

Re: What bags do you use? - 01/13/13 09:17 AM

BOB is in a mil-surplus frame pack set up...too tired to remember it.

Hunting pack is a UTG multi-purpose tactical messenger bag (maxped knockoff). I have two smaller maxpeds and actually like this one better than the fatboy.

Night hunting, I keep my gear in a Opsmod bag I picked up from Optics Planet--just got it so nothing yet to report.

I keep my hiking/personal survival kit in a small maxped bag that straps to my hip/thigh. Too tired to go look at what it is, but it's perfect for my needs.

Oh, and I can vouch for SF's Dulluth--it's a NICE bag. He's let me fondle it a couple times. His pack....not...never mind....

That bag you got from optics planet looks just like a copy (cept for the color) of my 511 push pack. I like it, its a nice size for a couple folks who are just out on an easy afternoons stroll.

That one is the UTG (regular hunting pack), not the Optics Planet. The Opmod looks like this:

Optics planet has some good prices on stuff. And they have a lot of stuff you wouldn't think about. I have dealt with them several times and never had any problems.

I have gotten reloading stuff from them before and as long as you can wait they are a great place to shop.

I really like Tacitcal Tailor (TT) products. In 2005 I met a guy at a course with a TT backpack that he'd taken to Baghdad and back. It was still in great shape. I bought myself one, which I also took to Baghdad (coincidentally) and have had it since 2006. It's a great pack still in great shape, and has reinforced my belief that it pays to buy quality. I bought my son a TT backpack for school - he'd been thrashing them and needed a new one every year. It's been two years now since he's had it and it has held up very well. I told him it's his backpack for life - he can finish high school with it and use it in college.

It's importatnt to note that TT has a Busse-like warranty. Well, maybe not that good, but they do stand by their products. "Should one of our products fail due to a defect in materials or workmanship, we will repair or replace it, free of charge, for the lifetime of the product."
