Looking around and noticing weapons at hand....... - 12/22/08 06:23 PM

I wonder how many people look around and notice all the weapons at hand, not including the obvious like firearms, knives, etc? I am always amused when at a sporting event or the airport when security checks are being done that some of the most common items can be used as a weapon. I am a true believer that neccessity is the mother of all inventions and Darwin's Survival of the Fittest and when combined it can make a good combo.

Just a thought.

No kidding......... first time I figured this out was in a grade school fight. Back in those days it was " supposed" to be just fist fighting. This dude kicked- bit me- hit me with a trash can- jabbed me with a stick and threw something like a brick at me !! In other words- many weapons. My buddies wife is like that- when they get into it you best duck cause she uses EVERYTHING. Yes- many weapons and airport security takes a pair of nail clippers from you - Go figure

When I was taking Jiujitsu, improvised weapons were always part of my gradings,
and were stressed in almost every class that was taught. My instructor was an
unarmed combat and small weapons instructor in the Canadian Armed Forces, and
also a 7th degree BB in Jiujitsu.
It's surprising what damage a hot cup of coffee or the edge of a credit card
can do. In fact, a guy here was just charged with aggravated assault for throwing
a cup of coffee into someone's face. Saw it in the newspaper the other day.

My favorite demonstration was when he would take a large naval orange and slice
it up with a bank card.

Cheers?

Those bank and credit cards can be very sharp. You could probably cut skin easliy with one with enough pressure.

Yep. Have foolishly done that

I can remember sitting at a small table, with a credit card, a 6 inch piece of
string, a pen, a cup of water and a rubber eraser. The test was to produce and
demonstrate on a "willing" partner, as many improvised weapons as possible within
a one minute time limit.

I was able to come up with and demonstrate 8 improvised tools.

I've always been bad at that, I've always figured nothing could be worse than a double eye gouge or head stomping, or both.

I had a little carbiner confiscated but the same kid let me through with a glass bottle. He even tried to take my photons, and even worse, let me tell him he wasn't getting them.

Obviously, the guy didn't know what he was doing. I can see a carbiner being
used like you would use brass knuckles, but I think that you'd probably do
more damage to your fingers than the person you hit. It's possible that you
might be able to use it as a thrusting type of weapon I suppose.
Now, that glass bottle would have been a must remove item. There's just soooo
many possibilities for that one. I guess that the photons could be used to
flash into someone's eyes to temporarily blind them.

I'm surprised that he let you push him around like that. Was he like a security
guard or something like that?

Cheers

glass bottles are wicked. when i used to play music we'd have some fights with bottles. VERY good weapon.

that bourne fight sequence was rather good.

Yeah, bottle do the job. Whe I was in hs a friend got cut up pretty bad by a guy that craked a bottle then went to town on Dustin's face as he set on a curb--Dustin never saw it coming.

Best post in the thread!

OP - good topic by the way... I enjoy these talks..

Ice picks? a weapon or tool? perhaps this is indicative of the state in which you live.. I think TN defines an ice pick as a weapon... too bad i cant carry my busse pick out to camp with...legally.. but i do it anyways. i dont think its a big deal, as in im going camping. not to bust ice though. I have used my picks (RIP & NIP) to split wood and they work pretty well actually.

but the brain is truly the best weapon of all. the knowledge of how to build weapons, etc (this can pertain to explosives, etc as well) is what makes one a machine of war. Not the tangible weapons/tools he carries. they can only allow said warrior to be more lethal, in many situations. thats why i carry the best - Busse Combat/Scrap Yard - when it comes to steel!!!

I am amazed to see metal knitting needles allowed on planes. A small blade is confiscated, but go ahead and take the big metal spike.

Exactly right. You can have all the tools you need within arms reach, but if
you don't know how to apply them, then they are just potential weapons for your
opponent to use.

Great read on that Reconseed

the most commonly carried improvised weapon, keys. Put a short lanyard on them and you have a pretty wicked mace type weapon, especially if you carry fifty million keys. After that I'd say a pen. For women hair pins, knitting needles, keys, pens, the whole purse, hairspray

Hi gruntinhusaybah,

You bring up a good point about the keys. This is a common thing to tell
people, but I don't think that it would be very effective. Unless you were
able to hit the attacker in the eyes, I doubt that it would do much other
than to tick them off. I had a friend do that to someone in the bar one time.
I wasn't there, so I don't know the entire circumstances, but he did say that
he swung the keys at the guys face. Scratched the guy up a bit, completely
ticked him off and he proceeded to beat the crap out of my friend until the
bouncers hauled the guy off my friend. I saw the aftermath of my friends face,
and although he wasn't seriously hurt, he didn't look to "purty"

Better I think to hold the keys between your fingers and use them as a thrusting
aid when you punch. Unless it was a life threatening situation though, it would
probably end you up in jail.

Dodge keys make a good thrusting tool--at least my truck key does.

I carry a folder clipped to the inside of my pocket almost every day, and I
use it for all sorts of tasks. One thing that I've never thought of using
it for is self defense.
The reason for that is, is that I could never get it out of my pocket and
open fast enough for it to be effective.
A case can be made for taking it out in advance, but then you would have a
very hard time convincing cops, judge or jury that it was a self defense
situation.
Nope, even though I carry the knife, it would probably be my last choice
for self defense.
Don't forget though, that I live in Canada. Handguns are restricted weapons
here, so you can pretty much rule out carry, or having someone pull one
on you in a robbery...etc...

Cheers

Re: Looking around and noticing weapons at hand... - 01/08/09 08:47 PM

One thing most people overlook as a weapon: glasses.

I remember a fight back when I was in high school.

This guy had another in a headlock, holding him in place while his buddy laid the punches to the poor guy. The "victim" managed to maneuver a hand to grab the shades off the face of the guy headlocking him, and snapped an arm of them off, and used it to jab and poke him in the face. The guy let him go in pure shock and pain, and the guy immediately swung around to plant a punch to the guys' throat and drop him. When attacker #2 pulled a knife, the guy leaped forward and jabbed the glass' arm right into the guys' stomach before he could even react.

Where theres' a will, there will always be a way.

Re: Looking around and noticing weapons at hand... - 01/09/09 12:54 AM

Imagine a 10 foot circle around you.
Now gradually collapse that circle in towards you until you feel that it's too
close and actually feels confining. For most people, it is about the length of
your arms. This is called your personal space. When anyone gets within that
space, the short hairs on the back of your head better be going up, and you'd
better be ready for anything
The more you train your senses, the more you become aware of how easy it is to
close the distance for an attack, the larger your circle gets.

You need to check out the Spyderco Waved Endura & Delica. They open as soon as it leaves your pocket, faster than a switchblade, & legal too. Only needs one hand to deploy it. There are vids demonstrating on YouTube. I have a waved Delica & I love it. I want to get a waved Endura now too.

I think that the Wave opening system is not allowed in Canada Andy, but I
could be wrong though and will check it out to make sure.

My Lapulapu on the top right (green handle) is legal to carry, and very easy to
pull from the pocket. You open it by brushing the flattened top part of the
thumb ramp, when closed, on your opponent's body. It has the effect of opening
and cutting in one move, and it works.
I stupidly tried it on my arm one day. Luckily I was wearing a thick leather
jacket at the time, but it sliced right through the sleeve.

It's a Spyderco / Bram Franks collaboration. This is the 2nd generation
design. When I was down in Eugene at the knife show last year, Bram
was there and was showing me the third generation. I didn't have any
money left, otherwise I would have grabbed one. Was also concerned about
taking it across the border back into Canada, so I let it slide.
The new model has a longer, less upswept blade.
