Spring Hiking / Fishing / Camping - 03/21/09 04:39 AM

Well folks,
It's that time of year again.
Spring has sprung, the grass has riz...well sorta...at least I think that
there's grass under the snow...somewhere... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Anyway, that's not the reason for this post.
I've got camping and fishing on the brain after being cooped up for so long.
Thought that winter would never end. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
To say that I've got "get-out-itus is a definite understatement. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" />

Curiosity has gotten the better of me, so I'd like to know if any of you
other Dawgs have Spring Camping / Hiking / Fishing plans?
If you do, maybe you could share your plans with us other Dawgs?

Are you planning Family Car Camping, a solo trip for a month,
something in between, deep sea fishing maybe??? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" />
Anything goes...well almost anything...remember, this IS a FAMILY type forum <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Pictures from past trips are more than welcome... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Help me get into the groove for this year fellow Dawgs!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

I am looking for a canoe so that I can hit the local lakes and do some fishing.
It will mostly be to lakes that I can drive to.

I have had a couple walk-abouts this week and it did me good. I need to get my fishing lic. so I can pack the rod with me and do some fishing while I am out and about. The spring is here!

Re: Spring Hiking / Fishing / Camping - 03/21/09 10:01 AM

its was 30 degrees here today and even colder at night but all the snow has melted,100%.

the change of seasons is something you feel in your bones.more than just the feel of temperature changes.

Re: Spring Hiking / Fishing / Camping - 03/21/09 01:13 PM

well hawaii doesnt really have intense seasons like most of you but ive been planning a sea to summit on the big island. i just need to save some money to not be able to work for a week and a half to cover bills. it would be solo...right now there is too much volcano VOG to hike successfully.

0 to 13,700 sounds like a great challenge.

if anything ill fly back over to kauai and do the kalalau again and cruise with the naked hippies! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

MCJ - that's why they call it Paradise! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Most of my outdoor adventures will be centered around my pond. My son and family will be visiting us - during the week of Blade! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" /> - and we will spend most of the time fishing, grilling, playing pool or foosball.

Looks like I have a nice flock of turkeys hanging around, so I will probably do a little turkey hunting as well. I love the fact that I can fish and hunt and never have to leave my property!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

0-13,700 is something that sounds interesting for sure.

As to turkey hunting, I have been thinking about trying that but never see turkey unless they are out of season--I guess they make me look like a turkey too LOL.

Re: Spring Hiking / Fishing / Camping - 03/21/09 11:57 PM

When I do see turkeys at our place there are about 50 at a time. Lol, and of course generally out of season. I'd rather shoot a whitetail anyway.

Re: Spring Hiking / Fishing / Camping - 03/22/09 04:04 PM

I am also getting the fever to get out. I have been doing some short day hikes around this area. I am close enough to Yellowstone NP to do some weekend trips there. I am going to try and make it there once a season starting with this spring. Mostly it will be car camping and hiking for the spring.

Re: Spring Hiking / Fishing / Camping - 03/22/09 07:15 PM

yellowstone is the only park my ol lady keeps talking about. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> shes upset that we couldnt check it out since it was still way to early in spring.

klink id be at my pond fishing with my son too! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

NM has some high peaks if you are going to bother to be all the way over LGM. Maybe you should walk up a few.

Re: Spring Hiking / Fishing / Camping - 03/24/09 08:32 PM

We have an area called Margaret Falls Canyon in a provincial park about an hour
away from us, so I'm going to try go get in there for a hike within the next
couple of weeks.
In the summer when it's 90 to 100+ degrees F, you walk into the canyon and the
temperature drops by a good 10 - 15 degrees. The closer you get to the falls,
the more the temperature drop.
I'll be taking pictures when I do the walk and post them on here.

I'm hoping to go to Kodiak, AK for some salmon and halibut fishing this summer. A very good friend of mine lives there and has offered me a place to stay.

Friends of my wife and I were talking about doing that too.
They invited us to come along and I'm thinking of it if I can
get the time off of work.
Right now, my wife is on the phone with her mother and they are
talking about taking a cruise. Wonder if they'd let me fish
off the side of one of those cruise ships? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

When I was about 15? I went on an Alaskan cruise. It was pretty fun.

Re: Spring Hiking / Fishing / Camping - 03/25/09 01:04 PM

snotpig - go for it!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> Having a place to stay for free really helps take the sting out of travel expenses, and makes the trip more enjoyable. When my wife and I went to Alaska in 90' we stayed at her uncle's place when in Anchorage. He let us use his truck with cap for camping and fishing around the Kenai peninsula - a really great time! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> I hope you make the trip!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crossfingers.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Re: Spring Hiking / Fishing / Camping - 03/25/09 05:53 PM

The last week in April I'm off to Big Hill Lake in Kansas for a week of camping, boating and fishing. My best friend lives 2 1/2 hours north of me. My birthday is the end of April and his is the end of May. We try to plan a trip some time between the two each year.

Last year the DMDC was the primary knife for the trip. So which one I should take this year <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

I have an SOD but I passed on the ScrapMuk. What is your second choice?
Posted By: sumoj275

Re: Spring Hiking / Fishing / Camping - 03/26/09 03:41 PM

Man for me it would be the SOD and MUK too. I still would like to get a Bird Dog for the outing trips, but have to wait and see what comes along.

Before I got the MUK I used to take a Green River cheapy buffalo skinner and it did pretty well.

I have a Bird Dog. I can do the SOD and Bird Dog.

I can't wait until it warms up a bit, I've been wanting to go down to Turkey Run state park down in central Indiana. I hear it has some good trails.

Re: Spring Hiking / Fishing / Camping - 03/28/09 01:03 AM

You guys with the fish are making me jealous. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" />
The ice just came off the river in the last couple of weeks,
but is still on the lakes. Man, I can't wait! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

Sumo,
I live in the west, so a trip to the coast is special, but not a trip of a
lifetime. The wife and I are taking a trip to Newfoundland on the east coast,
and that will be a trip of a lifetime for me. I've always wanted to go there
(since I was a little kid), so I'm not going to waste any time while there.
Plenty of time to sleep at work when I get back. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Re: Spring Hiking / Fishing / Camping - 03/28/09 03:00 AM

Dotd, I understand about time to worry and work when at home--and sure do understand the relaxation of being away.

That sure is a nice bass there, and as a kid I was called the perch (that is what they call them in my family)king because I could catch them anywhere and on anything. I really think it had to do with me making my own corks that mimicked dead wood instead of colored floats. Who knows, I do know I would not go hungry as long as there is a pond, lake or stream!

These bluegill do taste good, especially this time of year when the water is colder. If I wasn't raining so hard today I would be out trying to catch some, maybe tomorrow.

I don't have a SS4 either PK <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />. I did just get off the phone with my fishing buddy. He wanted to plan the food for the week. I asked why? No matter how we plan we both bring enough food to feed 4 people for two weeks <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

My knives to take out with me would be a DFLE and the SS4. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Don't have a DFLE, <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> so will substitute that with my Camp Tramp <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> or SOD <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Oh, and since I've gotten the Muk, I'll have to fit that in there somewhere too <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
