I've never seen them in the store. I thought at that price it would be good to stock up on them, might make good gifts too.

Seriously though, there's not much to these...raw material wise, can't be more than $.10-$.15, can it??
I don't have a magnesium mine or a way to process magnesium nodes, I'll just pay the $3

I gotta get there too. In the NRA mag is a 10% off coupon. But waiting to use it on something a little more spendy.

I stopped by my local harbor freight after work and they don't carry these. Was thinking about ordering a few online, after shipping its still a pretty decent deal.

Thats a great deal. I found some exactly like that for $4.99 each, so I got one, I guess its cheaper because of shipping fee's.

FYI, the easiest way to get shavings from magnesium isn't to scrape it with a sharp edge, but to use the metal file on your multi-tool.

Yep - took me a very dull edge on a spyderco endura before I learned that lesson the first time

Thats kinda of how I feel about it. I gotten nothing since the email confirmation and they didn't provide any way to track the order or check the status.

Like what? Lighters? They have moving parts & can break. They're pressurized and can also be affected by altitude. They can also explode in too high temps, or not work if it's too cold and the butane turns to liquid rather than gas. Ever dunk a lighter in water and try to light it? Flint and/or mag bars work when wet, aren't affected by wind, temperature, altitude, have no moving parts, & work even if dropped or broken. That's why...

Someone who wants a fire starter that will work in all the conditions where lighters won't?
I rarely carry a lighter - moving parts can break, it can leak fluid, and it's easy enough to use other fire starting methods that it's not really needed.
What I do carry is a tube of waterproof matches, a magnesium firestarter, and usually another, larger fire steel. The matches get used for convenience, but the magnesium and firesteel get used a lot, simply so I stay in practice with them. If I get stranded far from civilization, your lighter will get used up a lot faster than my firesteel.

for anyone who ordered these online, don't hold your breath. Apparently they are on back order and their company policy is that if an order is less than $9.99 and it's back ordered they cancel the order.

I tried to get 2@ 2.99 each but shipping is another $5.99 so it comes out to be around the same as my local camping store. Thanks for the link nonetheless Andy .

Wonder if they got any instock?
I can get them for $4.99 out the door. I guess with shipping they come out to about that much...still a good price.

Re: Magnesium Firestarters for $3 @ Harbor Freight - 12/21/09 01:10 AM
worst conditions i ever successfully started a fire in, i used a mag block. don't need cotton balls, vaseline, fire sticks, or whatever else have you. they're enough on their own. they're more fun than a lighter, too. you don't leave civilization to take it with you.

Re: Magnesium Firestarters for $3 @ Harbor Freight - 12/21/09 03:56 AM
I hated the mag blocks the first time I used them - I was trying to shave off the metal with a Spyderco Endura.
Later, I went back and tried again with the file on my Gerber Legend multitool. and what a difference. Great, easy way to start a fire first time.

HF just had those same blocks on sale this past weekend at the local outlet. 5 for 5 bucks. I bought $20.00 worth for gifts but I noticed on the one I kept for myself that they weren't made quite the same as the ones you get from Bass Pro or Wal-Mart.
Still, for the price you can't go wrong.
