Watches... - 10/22/09 02:26 AM

Hey dawgs, I'm looking for a new watch and was wondering what others here wear as well as what you would like to have if you were to purchase a new watch...

I am looking at some Seiko's and this one for now:
http://www.nitewatchesusa.com/viewdetails.asp?ID=122

Recommendations welcome...

It needs to have a metal band, date and time, luminescent for seeing time in the dark, less than $800 and have a decent warranty. No cheap knockoffs or walmart specials. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Thanks!

Hmmm...didn't we have a similar discussion?

Anyway, mine IS a Walmart special - $30.

I was gonna say get a rolex submariner (I've had mine since 1988 and it was a used 4 year old then). STILL works great, but then I say your price cap. BTW I HATE electric watches! Would much rather have a self winder or a manual (like the Rolex date just I bought for $50.00!!! No, it's not a knock off, it's real. Got it off an Old retired Air Force Msgt who bought it new in Panama back in 1955! And it still works great

Similar Andy but different. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> That person was asking about a good everyday watch for under $150.

I'm asking what watches people like at any price and for recommendations if they have any that are under $800.

Thanks.

MK II Blackwater. It does not meet your requirements as there is no metal band. If I were buying a watch, this would be it....when it can be had.

Re: Watches... - 10/24/09 03:07 PM

I just love this watch. I have had it for 3 years now and it takes everything I can throw at it. You can get them with an all black bezel as well if you want. Best of all this one has a TANK of a movement for an automatic. Its really tough to beat this watch up. Only complaint is the mineral crystal, however there are tons of places that will up grade you to sapphire crystal for less than 50 bucks.

Nice watch Justin...I had several Seikos that I was considering...But last night i went ahead and purchased the Nite. Sportsman's Guide became an authorized dealer for them, literally yesterday, and I had a nice coupon to use, so i pulled the trigger and got it.

Thanks for all the recommendations...I like watches and plan to buy a couple more once the holidays are past. I'll still be considering the seikos and a couple others that have been mentioned here.

I am another person that can not get used to wearing a watch. I have a couple different ones that the wife has picked me up over the years but I could not tell you the name of them. Now, I would love to have a Rolex someday but I don't think it would look right on a educators wrist.

That is another good looking watch. My only issue I take with this particular invicta is that the black parts of the band shows wear really easily. It tries to look like ceramic in other similar styled watches, but the ceramic holds up better. Now if this was being worn as a dress watch only I would get one in a heartbeat.

Re: Watches... - 10/27/09 06:51 AM

How much does the Invicta go for ?

Re: Watches... - 10/27/09 07:47 AM

Mineral vs Sapphire (stolen from watchuseek)

The yield strength of sapphire is in the neighborhood of 2.25 GPa.
The yield strength of mineral glass is around 75 GPa.

The modulus of elasticity (how easily the material deforms) for the two: sapphire - 250 GPa, and mineral glass - 82.5 GPa.

What does all this mean? It means, for the same diameter and thickness of watch crystal, it takes about 35 times more force to fail a piece of glass than a piece of sapphire, but sapphire will deform about three time more than glass before failing.

Plastics have a yield stength of around 67 GPa, and a modulus of elasticity of 2585 GPa, which means they are about as strong as glass but able to deform about ten times more than glass before failing.

Also, sapphire and mineral glass is tested by dropping a 2.25 ounce steel ball-bearing on a representative crystal from varying heights until the crystal breaks and the total amount of energy needed to break the glass can be calculated. According to ISO 14368, Part 3, mineral glass must absorb 1600 to 2100x10^-4 Newton-Meters, sapphire is only required to 800 to 1800x10^-4 NM.

Not sure of the price on that Invicta- It is a limited edition that is no longer available. I would guess retail is well over $1000 and most likely over $2000...That's just a guess and going by other similar Invicta watches.

Re: Watches... - 11/19/09 05:09 AM

Well guys...I'm afraid my watch budget has increased...While I can find many watches for <$500 (I bought the Nite Watch already & a few others) that are nice, I've decided that I have to have a Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon Spacemaster. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I have fallen in love with this watch and decided that it will be my one expensive time piece. My brother bought a Rolex and has never regretted it so I'm thinking I'll really like this watch and not regret the purchase. I'll post the link here and you can see it and read about the technology that goes into it.
The price tag is $2700 - I know - Ouch! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Here's the link: Ball Watches

If you go under collections, then into the Engineer hydrocarbon collection, then look at the Spacemaster <-- that's the one. Also check out the technologies section. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Re: Watches... - 11/20/09 12:38 AM

Hmm, back before I was married and had a house payment etc etc I was able to buy and then sell a few high end watches...

Anyway, if you like that watch go for it, enough said. But, tritium will die out. I think if you are going to drop some dough on a watch it should be able to be passed down to your childern and your childrens childern etc. I just don't see that happening with a tritium watch. That is why I sold my Marathon and it ran like a top.

If I am ever blessed enough financially I would love to one day pick up a Rolex or something. The Rolex movement is super tough btw.

Your brother has done something cool, how fun will it be to 25 years from now look down at your wrist and see something that has been with you that long.

I don't own any knife that will ever last 25 years...but knives do wear, if you use them, a good watch is a lifetime investment.

I bought a Rolex submariner back in 1988 (it was bought by an AF Colonel I worked with new in 1984. Still runs real good. Oh I also (posted this a while back somewheres) have a Oyster date just built in either 1945 or 1955. Paid $50.00. Yes, Fifty dollars. Then spend another 450 to have it "refurbished". Runs like a brand new watch, but it is one you need to wind everyday. BTW, the submariner has been to over 100 feet 3 times and beat up on sunken ships, coral, etc. I love it!

i have an invicta. be sure you send out that warranty info. i neglected that and now when i use the stop watch, the hand goes directly to six seconds instead of 12:00. guess i can live with that, but it's only a few months old and i shouldn't have to "live with" anything.

otherwise, i like it.

i wonder where invicta stands in the eyes of watch collectors. something like we look at cold steel?
Posted By: KnotSlip

Re: Watches... - 11/23/09 10:23 PM

The Invicta Reserve watches have a 5 year warranty and there is no need to do anything. For the non-reserve Invictas you are supposed to fill out the warranty card and send it in or do so online at their web site. If you have your receipt or proof of purchase, I think they would honor the warranty. Many collectors like Invicta...They are considered a good bang for the buck watch. You get a Swiss made watch, with sapphire or Flame Fusion crystals, good warranty, etc. for a pretty good price compared to other brands. They are by no means a Tag, Rolex, Omega or Ball but they are a good watch for the money. I would rank them with the mid-grade Citizens and Seikos, Crotons, Androids, etc. I now own 5 Invictas, 1 Croton, 1 Fossil, 1 Wittnauer and 1 Ball. Slowly becoming a collector <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> Like I need something else to spend my money on. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif" alt="" />

10 Watches More Expensive Than A Ferrari

Let’s be realistic here, the economy is in the crapper and your 401k looks about as arousing as you do after a cold shower. What’s a Burgundy drinking, ’stache rocking, web surfing Internet denizen like you to do? Diversify your skill set by ogling watches you’ll never be able to afford and learning what makes them tick.

Most of these watches are more complicated than college calculus and have more history than you could learn in a lifetime. You might even need an engineering degree and an instructional tome to figure out how they work. Regardless, all these watches (for one reason or another) are ridiculously cool and absurdly expensive. Sell the Ferrari, liquidate the stocks, and pick up one of these bad-a$$ timekeeping devices.

[Linked Image from coolmaterial.com]

The Patek Caliber 89 - $5,120,000

Buying this watch would require selling 3.5 Bugatti Veyrons, which happens to be 70% of the total number they sold in 2005. The closest most of us will ever get to a Veyron is drooling over it on Top Gear. It’s all about perspective here people. Three Veyrons. Say it out loud – Three. Veyrons. So what makes this watch worth $5.12mil? For starters, it is the most complicated watch on the planet with 33 complications. Essentially, it requires a degree in mechanical engineering to understand, but suffice it to say it has everything but the kitchen sink. It also took more time to design than you spent in college (including those extra years “studying” chemistry).

[Linked Image from coolmaterial.com]

Split Seconds Patek Philippe Reference 1436 By Tiffany & Co. – $214,000

It’s emblazoned with the Tiffany & Co. name, so you know it’s gonna be expensive. Compared to the rest of the watches on this list though, it’s actually pretty cheap. Well, you know, if two-hundred grand can ever be considered cheap. You’re getting the Patek and the Tiffany names, what else could you want? The ability to time two events that start simultaneously but end at different times – you didn’t think those fancy blue hands were just for show did you?

[Linked Image from coolmaterial.com]

Patek Philippe Ref 5016P – $762,000

Rounding out the Patek trinity is the Ref 5016P (The P stands for platinum, duh). This watch is the second most complicated wristwatch (the first one was a pocket watch so it doesn’t count) that Patek has produced. The problem with watches of this caliber the need for adjustments, but Patek has an app for that. If you keep this moon-phase, perpetual calendar, retrograde behemoth running continuously it won’t need adjusting until 2100. The Breguet Marie Antoinette – $XX,000,000

This watch was originally designed by Breguet himself and has more pieces (823) than an iPhone. It’s self winding, has a minute repeater, perpetual calendar, equation of time, jumping hour, power reserve indicator, and a bimetallic thermometer – everything but MMS messaging. It took forty-four years for the original to be constructed and Breguet and Marie Antoinette both died before it was completed. Ultimately, the original watch disappeared, never to be seen again. When Swatch acquired Breguet, an Indiana Jones style quest for the watch began. When they came up short they reproduced the watch using only the images of the original. Breguet has received offers in the eight digit range, but still refuse to sell.

[Linked Image from coolmaterial.com]

Jaeger-LeCoultre Gyrotourbillon 1 – $400,000

This watch is clearly complicated, but it has a feature some of the others don’t, a tourbillon. What’s a tourbillon? A wrist-mounted anti-gravity device. Tourbillons (in the most basic terms) prevent gravity from adversely affecting accuracy. Normal tourbillons only rock one-axis anti-gravity, this tourbillon rocks two. No word yet on when the third and fourth axis will be integrated.

[Linked Image from coolmaterial.com]

Rolex Submariner – $234,000

At some point in time, everyone has held, worn, or owned a Rolex Submariner. This one is special because it was held, worn, and owned by the one and only Steve McQueen. That’s right, the “King of Cool” owned this particular submersible, self-winding, stainless steel oyster bracelet Rolex. You’re getting time, Rolex, and bona fide badassery.

[Linked Image from coolmaterial.com]

Vacheron Tour de l’Ile – $1,250,000

Vacheron is the oldest watch manufacturer still in existence since its inception in 1755. 250+ years of history allows them to make watches that eclipse most others. The Tour de l’Ile has tourbillon, two faces, and more complications and parts than even the Breguet Marie Antoinette (hopefully without the beheading) making it the most complicated serial wrist watch ever made. It’s worth JUST shy of a Veyron… unless you buy used.

[Linked Image from coolmaterial.com]

AP Royal Oak Grande Complication – $560,000

Audemars Piquet (that’s where the AP comes from obviously) does it again with the Royal Oak Grande Complication. The Grande Complication is another watch that has a perpetual calendar accurate until long after you will no longer be alive. It has a lot of the same complications as the other watches (minute repeater, split seconds chronograph, aforementioned perpetual calendar) but presents them in a way that doesn’t require a thousand page instruction manual just to read. Real men don’t use instruction manuals.

[Linked Image from coolmaterial.com]

Richard Mille Tourbillon – $525,000

Look at it. It looks like a Rube Goldberg machine had sex with the Gugenheim and the offspring was skeletonized. Quite a few of these watches have modern elements, but none of them have the modern design that this watch does. Made of aluminum, titanium, and awesome it would be the perfect compliment for the new clear hood you just put on the Ferrari.

[Linked Image from coolmaterial.com]

Ulysse Nardin Triplejack Minute Repeater – $340,000

It may be crazy, but this watch seems like holds some deep, dark, historical secret that only Nicolas Cage can uncover. But that may just be the three Jacks “hammering the bells to separate the quarters from the minutes.” Sure, it’s more expensive than a Ferrari, but something about this watch just seems a lot less complicated. Since when did you just want to tell time with your watch?

This is the point in the movie after the credits roll where you get that wicked cameo that’s sole purpose is to say thanks to an underappreciated celebrity. In this case, the star is none other than Ben Clymer of
[img]http://coolmaterial.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/Hodinkee1.jpg[/img]
In case you haven’t heard of Hodinkee (for shame!), it’s a daily collection of the most interesting and rare watches around the world. Think Cool Material specifically geared towards vintage and interesting time pieces.

I got a Pathfinder a few months ago at Costco. It's not the newest like yours is. It keeps time accurately measured against a Casio that has Atomic Timekeeping. The solar battery on the previously mentioned watch works very well, I've had it for a couple of years and it's never stopped even when it's been in the drawer for months at a time. The barometer on the Pathfinder is accurate , I check it against the weather channel when I get up

Back in the late '80s I was destroying Casio G-shocks to the tune of at least 1, sometimes 2 a year. Finally was able to get a Rolex Submariner used at less than half price. That was in 1988. Been using it since then with no problems. Now my $50.00 oyster (yes it IS real) was built in 1954 or 1955 and still keeps excellent time. Wouldn't go to another brand for nothing.

This is my favorite watch for the price.

[Linked Image from thumbnail.image.rakuten.co.jp]

It is solar powered, gets a signal from an atomic clock everyday and stays within thousandths of a second of dead on in all but the most obscure regions of the earth. Even when it isn't getting a signal, it is as accurate as any other watch you can find. Plus, it is G-Shock and I can personally attest that they are as tough as nails. This is what a watch would be if Scrap Yard was in that business.

Too bad I'm not willing to part with $2,500 to buy one. However, if I was going to spend that kind of dime on a watch, it would be this one. It's as nice looking as any Rolex and I would bet it is 100 times more dependable. Too bad the name Casio is regarded by most of Americans as a "low end" watch. They actually put the same technology into a brand Casio calls Oceanus, just so Americans will consider paying top dollar for their watches.

I did not see it listed here, check out the Tissot T-Touch. I have the titanium and like it for hiking. It has a compass, altimeter, etc...

Re: Watches... - 08/14/10 12:15 AM

The T-touch is pretty sweet. I really like the one my buddy has. The only thing that bugged me about it was the water resistant depth of 30 meters. I don't do anything besides the occasional snorkeling; but I just found all the watches I have had that weren't rated to at least 100 meters seemed to leak. I have never owned a Tissot though!

I actually managed to ruin a pretty nice Tag just taking a dip while fishing one day. Lol, my "nice" watch days are over!

Ideally I guess I'd have something under 40mm with a sapphire crystal. If it had 24mm lugs and a 2824 movement I'd be thrilled. But I'm plenty happy with whats on my wrist for now.

Six band atomic signal automatic reception. I think Africa is the only continent it won't be automatically set to within 1000s of a second to perfect time.

G-shock tough.

Re: Watches... - 06/28/11 10:24 AM

Got this watch recently, not being someone who has ever owned or worn a watch I wanted something that would be more useful to me than just 'telling the time', got it from Amazon for $30. I spend most of my time on the water Kayak fishing/camping so for me this watch is more a tool than anything else. As for getting the fishing times right, well it hasn't been wrong yet. What I really like is the vibration alarm, silent but it definitely gets your attention. That's something I haven't seen on any other watch. Nobody needs to hear when it's time for me to get up, very cool. It's also got a nifty backlight that will activate if you hold your arm a certain way, great for when your hands are full. This function is switchable to save battery life.

Got this off a website... "The Casio Forester moon phase fishing watch is the perfect timepiece for avid anglers, with a stylish design well suited for both land and sea wear. In addition to the automatic time, day, month and date displays, this convenient digital watch also indicates the best times to fish based on the moon's phase, latitude and longitude. The watch displays the moon's age, phase and time, as well as sunrise and sunset information, for the current or designated day. A handy vibration alert can be used with the daily alarm, hourly time signal, or fishing timer so as not to disturb the quiet on the water. The watch also offers and five daily alarm settings. An automatic electro-luminescent backlight with afterglow makes the display easy to read at any time, and the water-ready nylon band comes with a buckle clasp, the watch is water resistant up to 330 feet (100 meters)".

It is the Invicta Sea Hunter Mid-size. It is 50mm -- its big brother is 65mm. I never thought I would see a 50mm watch called mid-size. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> It is light however because the case is all titanium. It is 300m water resistant and an automatic movement- all Swiss made. very nice and to be my next watch. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Invicta does make smaller watches - everything from 38mm up to 65mm. 38-40 is considered classic. I prefer 42-47mm.

Yes, sir, it is. I have been wearing it to the office and during casual outings for a few weeks and love the thing. The illumination on the glow-in-the-dark hands leaves a lot to be desired, but for the settings I wear it in, it hasn't been an issue. Have gotten a few compliments on it. My new sergeant major actually said "Nice watch, but I only wear G-shocks. They can take a beating and I want a watch I can trust." It blew his mind when I let him look a little closer.

For field/outdoorsy outings, I wear my AWG100. It has the same basic functions, minus having all analog display, in a lighter watch and an LED light that can actually work as a tiny flashlight in a pinch. EDIT: It doesn't receive an atomic signal in China.

Time to dig this thread out of the ground.

I acquired a few watches recently.

First my new daily beater. I always wanted my dad's Vietnam era Army issue selfwinding job, but he won't come off it and I wouldn't wear it anyway. So, I got this Citizen Eco-Drive and gave it a satin finish to hide the scratches it is bound to get when I work in my warehouse. I replaced the factory band with a Maratac band.

Wouldn't call them cheap, because they're pretty good pieces. Just not expensive.

Rolex Submariner is my every day wear watch. It's an '84 model that I bought in '88. My back up is a 59 year old Rolex Oyster date just. It's a manual wind and I only wear it for a week or two a year, sometimes a month.

Very Nice, I bet you could add a zero to the end of that number for it now pretty easily.

The Invicta I am wearing today is pretty much a copy of the submariner, they are a little smaller than I like but I see they make a bigger size now.

Re: Watches... - 12/31/13 01:11 AM

I Paid a grand for the submariner from a Lt Col I worked with in Japan. The other one I bought from a retired C130 loadmaster. He bought it new in Panama in 1955. He had a plastic crystal in it and a twist o flex band. He knew I would do it justice and sold it to me about 6 months before I left for Japan.

Tag Heuer does make automatic watches but I don't believe that they make the the movements in-house. I bought a TAG 6000 series years ago as my first luxury watch. I still own it but alas, the company was sold a few years back and I just don't care much for the current styles.

i'm not a watch wearer at all but ever since coyotebc mentioned he unsually wears a watch for hunting. since then every time i've been out hunting or fishing i've realized i really should have a watch on me. other than that i really don't care to have on on.

with that in mind i'm thinking i will get something fairly cheap but i prefer to buy something with a little quality or a desirable feature or two.

so any recommendations for a hunting/fishing watch?

One of the mid end casios are hard to beat for value and ruggedness.

Re: Watches... - 01/22/14 09:50 PM

Greaser is right about Casio for a tough watch.

Depending on preference Casio, Timex, and Citizen probably all have models that would work. I like the eco-drive Citizen because they don't need batteries (solar), but they are more costly and maybe not as tough as a Casio G-shock. The higher end g-shocks sync to the atomic clock and have solar charging, but then you are in the $100+ range.

A while back, while waiting for a scheduled office meeting room to clear out, a friend of mine says, "They've gone over their scheduled time. It's 10:05 already."

Another manager that was waiting in the hall for the meeting then said, "No they haven't. It's exactly 10 am."

My friend says, "That's a really nice watch you have there. Is it one of those new Casios?"

Other manager says, "Yes it is. My wife bought it for me."

My friend says, "Tell her to take it back because my Rolex says that it's five minutes slow."

I don't like electric watches. They are dependent on batteries that can be hard to find. AND they usually aren't that easy to replace.

Thanks for the recommendation. Without researching them I can tell you they're too rich for my blood. They hold their value like Busse knives. I would definitely love to have one though.

Right now I have a Marathon TSAR. It cost me $425 4 years ago and that killed me. They make an automatic version, but it's nearly double the price.

Both of mine are. The Submariner (water proof) specially, to 300M!

The Oyster I don't think lists a depth but I've been told it is HIGHLY water resistant, maybe even waterproof to at least 100ft, but I don't want to find out. I DO know the Submariner is waterproof to at least 112ft.

Re: Watches... - 04/02/15 09:18 AM

I recently had a birthday and my dad offered a trade ... My Black Monster Gen. 2 on a Super Engineer 2 bracelet for his Speedmaster Pro. Easy decision for me. I love that Seiko. It had accompanied me to many countries the Corps has sent me to, but I can still remember asking dad if I could wear his watch when I was about seven years old, more than three decades ago. Every once and a while he would give in and I would press the buttons and time everything ... How long commercials were, how long my sister would talk without taking a breath, etc.

When we swapped watches, he told me where he got it. His war story was about down time in Vietnam. He was a helicopter pilot for the Army and won it off a Marine in a poker game. The Marine was out of cash but still wanted to bet his hand, so we offered up his Speedy. My dad said OK and called with $300. The Marine laughed as this didn't cover the value of the watch. Yet, he was confident and let it play. Dad beat his full house with a bigger full house.

The only things I know for certain is dad was a helicopter pilot in the Army, served in Vietnam and I have his watch. I'm thinking the poker game may be true, but he probably changed a soldier into a Marine to take a stab at his jarhead son.

Re: Watches... - 04/20/15 06:49 PM

I just can't bring myself to spend a whole lot on a watch. I am fairly practical. Quality and durability trump the cool factor for me.

If I can find Quality, durability and cool factor that's a bonus.

That was around my threshold for comfort(money wise) on a watch. I wouldn't have spent it if my wife didn't force me to buy my own birthday gifts.

The only problem that I have with an Eco Drive is that the nonmetallic bands don't last as long as the watch does. So I took out my wife's sewing machine (she NEVER uses it) and mad a few custom straps from nylon webbing. Great solution to that problem!
