Steri-pen opinions.

I added a couple of these to my Survival Kits. They're mainly a back up to my Miox.


Anyone have good experiences with them?

No experience,but been thinking about getting a couple.

I've got one. Haven't used it that much, but the times I've used it, it seems to
work pretty well.
Works off of ultraviolet and seems to kill all the nasty little critters.

The only problem that I can see with it over other methods is that you need
4 AA batteries to use it. If you take it, you had better take along spare
batteries for it.

Usually, I'll boil the water either over a fire or on a stove. That way, I
know that the little critters are dead.

2 ways to charge <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> or use disposables.They say the solar charger takes 2-5 days to charge the batts. maybe longer depending on conditions.The wall charger takes 4-6 hrs.You can purify apprx.30 ltrs. on one charge.You can charge your other single cell rechargeable batts also.2 at a time.

Batts. go in the end.The slot in the cap is large enough for a coin,but was easy to unscrew with my thumb nail.The adventurer uses 2 cr123 batts.

The tapered end is the protective cap for the UV light wand that goes into the water & kills the bugs.The chrome oval near the light wand is the water sensor.(one on each side)They have to be in the water to turn the UV on.Press the on button,when the green LED light flashes put the pen in the water up to the sensors & the UV comes on automatically.Stir the wand in the water to insure all water is exposed to the germicidal UV light.The UV light goes out & the green LED light comes on to show the dose is complete.

The solar panel is built into the hard case with a clear plastic layer to protect it.The hard case has a belt clip on the back.You can attach it to the outside of your pack to charge the extra batts while hiking.

Does it work? YES!
I went to the mountains yesterday to play with some knives & Mini 14.I took along the SteriPen to test it on some creek water.

I treated & drank the water yesterday.No ill effects since.
I love this thing & it's going into the Bob,& I'll get one for my hunting pack too.
It's a great 1 or 2 person purifier as it only does 32Ozs. at a time.Because it is an electronic device & runs on batteries I'll carry purification tabs also.
It does not filter particulates & it's not for use with cloudy water,clear only.but you can get a prefilter for particulates.
This is a great little survival tool that only takes 90 seconds to treat 32 Ozs.& 45 secs.for 16 Ozs.of water.Quick & easy.2 thumbs up from me.

Thanks for the read and report. I guess, or assume, that you could pre-filter cludy or dirty water like normal then use the steri-pen?

Yes,& its recomended.The UV doesn't work in cloudy water.

I would like to check out the Lifestraw or others like it as well. Anyone else use one of these?

I carried a straw that had a carbon filter in it. I think I used it once.

I have used a bottle with a filter in it. That worked well.

You didn't like the straw K?

I like it because it was so light. But, I did not really get a chance to use it all that much. It was a back-up to my back-up. I think I only used it to make sure that it worked.

No problem.

The yard has been good to me. So, I'm just returning the favor.

I plan to use it as back up as well. Architect has reinforced the need for redundancies in hiking/BOB/GHB gear.

He has changed my approach as well.

I have his thread printed. It's now a sort of 'bible' for me. It's cool that I was able to pass the info on to 3 friends as well. They were very impressed with the logic he uses.
