Congrats! Mossberg's 500/590s will serve you well.
Shoot Everything in it.. OO, slugs, birdshot.. to get a feel for how the different loads perform, pattern at different ranges, and how recoil feels with each.

It *is* hard to count rounds!
I usually stick a handful of FMJs at the bottom of my spare mags.. if I don't tag all the baddies within 15-rounds.. i figure the survivors have probably taken cover by then <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
or by then.. i woulda fought my way to my rifle.. so's i can tag 'em behind walls too. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

How is self defense defined in the US. Here in South Africa it is fairly strict .. this excludes shooting through a door just because a perp is on the other side .. somebody loading your tv onto your truck is not considered self defense unless he/she shots at you at the same time..

Depends on the state.. some require you to "retreat", some don't, some say you simply need to "fear for your life".. blah blah.
